7 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to get started with your phone by installing and ch arging the battery, installing the SIM card and optional memor y card, and setting up your voice m ail. Before using your phone for the first time , you’ll need to inst all and charge t he battery and install the SIM card.
Getting Started 8 Batt er y Before using your phone for the fi rst time, install the ba ttery a nd charge it fully. Important!: Before removing or replacing the battery, make sure the phone is switched off; hold down the key until the power - off image displays, then press Pow er of f .
9 Char ging t he Batter y Y our phone is powered by a rechargeable Li-ion batter y . A wall charger , whic h is used for charging th e battery , is included with your phone. Use only a pproved batteries and chargers. Ask your local Samsung de aler for further details.
Getting Started 10 3. When charging is finished, first unplug the charger’ s po wer plug from the AC wall outlet, the n disconnect the charger’ s connector from the phone. Important!: If your handset has a touch screen display , please note that a touch screen responds best to a light touch from the pad of your finger or a non-metallic stylus.
11 1. To install the SIM card , carefully slide the SI M card in to the SIM card socket unt il the card clicks into place. Make sure that the card’ s g old contacts face into the phone an d that the upper -left angled corne r of the card is positioned as shown.
Getting Started 12 2. Gently lift t he edge of t he memory card cover up (as shown) (2). Instal l the memo ry c ard by sliding it into the the slot (3), being sure to alig n the gold contact pins on the ca rd with the phone’s contacts. 3. Gently push the memory card cover (4) down to close, and slide the cover back into the lock position.
13 Switching the Phon e On or Of f 1. Press and hold the key until the pho ne switches on. 2. If the phone as ks you to enter the phone password, use the keypad to enter this password and press OK . 3. If the phone as ks for a PIN, use the keypad to enter t he PIN and press OK .
Getting Started 14 Phone Options Phone options is a shortcut met hod for putting the phone in Silent mode, Ai rplane mode, or turn ing the phone power off. 1. Press and hold the key until the Ph one options sc reen displays on the Home page. 2. T ouch one of the follo wing options: • Silent mode : turns off al l the phone soun ds.
15 Locking and Unloc king the Phone By default, the phone lo cks when the backlight turns off. Wh en the device is locked, press the Lock button (on the right side of the ph one) to unlock the phone. Y ou can choo se to configure lock settings to preven t unauthorized use of your phone.

If you misplac e or for get your Google Account password, follow these i nstructions to retrieve it: 1. From your computer , use an Internet browse r to navi gate to http ://go ogle.

19 4. Volu me key allows you to a djust the rin ger volume in st andby mode (w ith the phone open) or ad just the voic e volume during a ca ll. When receiving an inco ming call, pressi ng the volume key mutes the ring tone. 5. Menu key displays a list of options availabl e for the cu rrent screen.
Understanding Y our Phone 20 Back View of Y our Phone The following illustra tion shows the external elem ents of your phone: 1. External speaker allows you to hear ringe rs, music, and other sou nds offered by your phone. 2. Cover Release indicator is used to remove th e cover from the phone.
21 Display Y our phone’ s display provi des informatio n about the phon e’ s status, and is the interfac e to the features of your phone. The display indicates your conne ction status, signal strength, battery status an d time. It also displays notifications, the Widge t bar and a Quick List (or shortcut) bar .

23 Press and Hold Some buttons and keys require you to press and hold them to activ ate a feature, for exam ple, you press the Lock key to lock and unl ock the phone.

F or example: press and hold on a Home screen to acce ss a menu of customization options. Note: When you touch and hold the widget it transfers and to the Home screen and launches the application.
Understanding Y our Phone 26 Slide Slide means to quickly d rag your finger verti cally or hor izontally on the scree n to move the area of foc us or to scrol l through a list. F or example: slide your finger left or right on the Home scre en to scroll among the three screens.
27 Display settings In this menu, you can change vari ous settings for the for the wallpaper , cube, br ightness or backlight. 䊳 From Idle mode, touch Quick List ➔ Settings ➔ Display settings . For more information, refer to “Display Settings” on page 167.

Each panel can have a different wallpaper . 4. T ouch Photos or Samsung W allpaper Gallery and select a wallpaper image.

33 Quick List The Quick List provides access t o commonly used items, such as Dialer (for making a phone call), Cont acts (accessing the Contacts list), Web (o pening a bro wser via web2 go), and Qui ck List (for application ac cess). Some items on the Quick Li st are context -sensitive.
Understanding Y our Phone 34 Status B ar The Status Bar shows informat ion about the connection stat us, signal strength, phone ba ttery level, and time, and displays notif ications about incoming messages and calls and other actions. This list identifies the icons you’ll see on your phone’ s display screen: Displays the signal strength.

37 Clearing Notifications T o clear all notifica tions from t he Notifica tion panel: 1. From t he Home screen, to uch the Noti fication Bar until the pul l-down displays, then drag down vertically . 2. T ouch Clear notifications . The notifications are cl eared from the panel.
Understanding Y our Phone 38 3D Cube Naviga tion The 3D Cube navigation is another way to quickly navigate a few of th e most visited menu s or applications. When you first launch the Cube (by pr essing the key) both a 3D cube and a quick launch menu d isplay .
39 Applications offere d on the Cube are: Tips Tips was designed to work with the web to show you some of the unique fe atures of your phone. Tips contains user help ab out the following subjects: 1. Open the Widget bar and tap the Tip s widget. Note: Tips displays in landscape mode only .
Memory Card 40 Section 3: Memor y Car d Y our device lets you use a mic roSD ™ (SD) card to expand avai lable memory space . This secure digi tal card enables you to exchange images, music, and data between SD-compatibl e devices. This section addresses th e featu res and options of your device’ s SD functionality .
41 3. Connect the US B cable to the phone a nd con nect the cable to the computer . As soon as the connection is e stablished a drive letter is assigned t o the flash storage and the “ USB connected ” message displays at the top of the phone. 4. From the Home screen, pull down the Notification window.
Memory Card 42 Erasi ng Fil es fr om the SD ca rd Y ou can erase files from the SD card using th e phone. 1. Ensure the SD card is mounted. Fo r more in format ion, refer to “Mounting the SD Card” on page 40. 2. From the Home scr een, touch Quick List ➔ Settings ➔ Memory settings ➔ Memory card de tails .
43 Section 4: Call Functions and Contac ts List This section describes features and functionality associated with making or answering calls, and the Co ntacts list, which is used to store conta ct information. For mor e informat ion, refer to “Call settings” on page 178.

45 Using the V oice Dialer Voice dialer is a voice recogniti on software used to activate a wide variety of functions on your phone. 1. From the Home screen, open the Widget bar and touch the Voice D ialer widget.

47 From the Home screen, you can also ad just the ring volu me using these keys. T ur ni ng the Speakerp hone on a nd of f While on a ca ll, you can use your Sp eakerphone by fol lowing these steps: 1. T ouch t he Speaker icon to turn the speakerphone on.
Call Functions and Contac ts List 48 T o make a new call whil e a call is in progress: 1. Enter the new phone number that you wish to dial or look it up in Ca ll history. 2. T ouch Hold to pl ace the first caller on hold. 3. T ouch New call to dial the second call.
49 Amplify voice 䊳 Press ➔ Amplify voice . Y our voice amplifies during the call. Web During a call if you se lect this option you connect to the Web. 䊳 Press ➔ Web . Automatic screen lock If you configured your phone with the Automatic scre en lock option, during a call your scre en locks to prevent accidental screen presses.

The two calls are now jo ined into a multi-party call and di splay in the order in which they were called. Important!: A maximum of two callers can be joined to a single multi-party line.
51 T o answer a ne w call while you have a call in progress: 1. Press the k ey to answer the incoming call. The first call is a utomatically put on hold. 2. T o switch between t he two calls, touch either the In call tab or the On hold call tab, then touch the sw ap icon.
Call Functions and Contac ts List 52 T o view a missed call immedia tely: 1. If the display is o ff, press the lock key to turn the display on. The miss ed calls display on the screen on t he Missed Calls tab. 2. T ouch the key to call the displayed number .
53 1. From the Home screen, touch Contacts . 2. T ouch Create contact . 3. T ouch t he Name field, enter a name for this co ntact using the displa yed keypad and touch Next . 4. T ouch t he Mobile numb er field and enter a number using th e displayed keypad then touch OK .
Call Functions and Contac ts List 54 Storing a Num ber on the SIM Card The default storage location for saving phone numbers to yo ur Contacts list is your phone’ s built-in memory . T o save a number to your SIM ca rd, you need to change the Save new contacts to option first.
55 2. When you locate the entry , press the key to dial th e number . My Profile My Profile contains your contac t information, and can be se nt to recipients as a Vir t ual Business Card (V-card) attachment. My Profi le is the first Contact li sted in the Contacts list.
Call Functions and Contac ts List 56 Delet ing Co ntacts Important!: Once contact entries are deleted, they cannot be recovered. This option allows you to delete your co ntacts. For more info rmation, refer to “Delete” on page 52. Y ou can delete all your entries f rom your phone’ s memory , your SIM card, FDN, or All.

59 Speed Dialing Once you have stored phone numbers from your Contacts Li st, you can set up to 8 speed dial entries and then dial them easily whenever you want, simply by touching the a ssociated num eric key . Fr om the Home screen , to speed dial the numbers assigned to keys (2 to 9), touch and hold t he ap pr opri ate key .
Entering T ext 60 Section 5: Entering T e xt This section outlines how to se lect the desired text inp ut mode when enteri ng characters into yo ur phone. This section also describes how to use the T9 predicti ve text entry system to reduce the nu mber of key stroke s associated with entering text.
61 Changing the T ext Input Mode When using you r phone, you ofte n need to en ter text, such as when storin g a name in your Contacts List, creating your personal greeting or scheduling ev ents on your calendar . Y ou can enter alphanumeric characters by using your phone’ s keypad.
Entering T ext 62 toggle between Symbol/N umeric, or ABC mode. Using T9 Mode T9 is a predictive text input mode th at allows you to key in any character us ing single keystrokes. This text input mode is based on a built-in dictionary . T o enter a word in T9 mode: 1.
63 If the word doesn’t display correctly , other word choices display on th e screen from whic h to choose. If these choices do not incl ude the word you want to use, add a new word to the T9 dictionary . 4. Insert a space by touching Space and start entering the next word.
Entering T ext 64 The 123 mode enables you to ente r numbers into a text message. 䊳 T ouch SYM/123 then press the numeric keys you want to enter . Using ABC Mode T o use ABC mode: 1. T ouch ABC until the keypad displays. 2. T ouch the key labeled with the letter yo u want.
65 Section 6: Messages This section describes how to send or receive different types of messages . It also explains the feature s and function ality associa t ed with messaging.
Messages 66 T ext Messages Short Message S ervice (SMS) a llows yo u to send and receive short text me ssages to and from other mobile phones. The Message icon ( ) displays when yo u receive a new text message. When th e memory is fu ll, the message icon flashes on your phone and you cannot receive any new messages.
67 Tip: Tilting the phone to a horizontal position displays a QWERTY keybo ard . Note: For further details about entering characters, see “Using T9 Mode” on page 62. T ext messages are one page long with a total of 640 characters. When your message exceeds 640 characters, the message type automatically changes to Picture message.
Messages 68 Saving a Message as a Draft 1. From the Home screen, open the Widget t ray and tap the Messaging widget, then tap New message . – or – From the Home scr een, touch Quick List ➔ Messaging ➔ New message .
69 Picture Messa ges This menu allows you to use the Mu ltime dia Message Service (MMS). Picture messaging is a messaging service that provides delivery of personal multimedia me ssages from phone t o phone or from phone to email.
Messages 70 Tip: Tilting the phone to a horizontal position displays the QWERTY keyboard, while holding the phone in the vertical position displ ays the numeric keypad. T ouch Writing language, then select the language to change the input langua ge. Note: For further details about entering characters, see “Using T9 Mode” on page 62.
71 •P r e v i e w : allows you to pr eview the mess age prior to sending. •P a g e t i m i n g : allows you to set the du ration in seco nds that th e page displ ays on the r ecipient's scr een. Selecti ons are: 2 seconds, 5 seconds, 10 seconds, or a cu stom number of seconds (up to 999).

73 2. From the Home screen, touch the Widget tray , and tap the Audio Postcard widget. The screen displays a default postcard in landscape mode. Import ant!: Y ou must insert an SD card in order to activate the camera for the Audio Postcard application.
Messages 74 – ISO : allows you to adjust the ISO sensitiv ity of the cam era imaging senso r . Selectio ns are: ISO Aut o, ISO 50 , ISO 100, IS O 200, ISO 400, or ISO 800 spe ed. – Image Qu ality : allows you to set the image qualit y to: Normal, Fine, or Super Fine.
75 When you enter the folde r , the list of messages displays with the se nder’ s phone numbers, or names, if available in your Contacts list as well as th e time the messa ge was received. If the folder is full when a new message is received or se nt, or the SIM card is full, the message saves to the phone.
Messages 76 •M e m o : allows you to attach a memo to thi s message. Note: When your message exceeds 160 characters, a page is automatically added. If you add a page using the ➔ Add Page feature, or you Attach an item or modify the message in any way using the key , then the message type automatically changes to Picture message.
77 Email Email enables yo u to review and create email using AI M ® , AOL ® , Y ahoo! ® Mail, Comcast, Compuserve, Earthlink, Gmail, HotPOP , Juno, Mac, NetZero, S BC Y ahoo!, Verizon and several other emai l services. Y ou can also rece ive text message alerts when you receive an important email.

79 Creat ing a Gmai l Messa ge 1. From th e Gmail Inbox, pres s ➔ Compose . 2. Enter the recipie nts email addres s in the To field. Separate multiple rec ipient email addresses with a comma. 3. Press and select Add Cc/Bcc to add a carbon or blind copy .

81 Star ting yo ur Instant Messen ger 1. From the Home screen, open the Widget tray and ta p the IM widget . The IM communities display . 2. T ouch the messenger s ervice to which you are subscribed. 3. Enter the required sign in information such as Screen name, AIM, Window s Live Messenger , Y ahoo! Messenger ID and Password, then touch Sign In .

Messages 84 Picture message settings Use the following options to set Send and Receive settings for Pictu re messages: Sending options •P r i o r i t y : you can select the priority leve l of your messages. • Expiration : set the le ngth of time you r messages are stored in the message cent er while th e network att empts to deli ver them.
85 Managing SIM card mes sa ges When you access this menu all of the SMS me ssages stored on the SIM card displa y on the screen . From he re you can copy the messages to the pho ne, or delete the messa ges. 1. From the Home screen, touch Quick List ➔ Messaging .
Time Management 86 Section 7: Time Management This section descri bes how you can manage time using time-related applications such as the Calendar , Alarm Clock, Analog or Digital clock, an d the World cl ock. Calendar With the Calend ar feature, you ca n: • Consult the calendar by day , week, or month.
87 • Settings : allows you to select the Sta rting day for this calendar as well as wh ether you view the calendar by Month, Week, or day . • My calendars : displays the created calendars in a list. • Missed alarm events : displays a list of missed a larm events.
Time Management 88 Press the key to access th e following options: • V iew by week : displays the calendar in w eek view . • V iew by month : displays the calend ar in month view .
89 Miss ed Alar m Ev en ts Y ou can view all o f the alarmed events. 1. From the Home screen, touch Quick List ➔ Calendar . 2. Press ➔ Missed Alarm Events . The missed alarm events display . Alarm Clock This feature allows you to: • Set up multiple alarms to ring a t specified times.
Time Management 90 Customizing the Alar m Cl ock Y ou can chang e the alarm c lock type that displays. 1. T ouch the Alarm clock di splayed on the screen. 2. Slide left or ri ght to view the al arm clock choice s. 3. T ouch an alarm clock display . The screen displays the ne wly selected alarm clock.
91 Section 8: Connections Y our phone is equippe d with features that allow you to qui ckly connect to the web. Google T alk Google T alk is a free Windows and we b-based application for instant messag ing offered by Google. Conversation logs are automatica lly saved to a Chats area in your Gmai l account.

93 Go to a web page 1. From the Browser , press , then touch Go . 2. Enter the web page URL using the keyboard. 3. T ouch t he URL in whic h to conne ct. 4. T ouch Go . Entering T ext in the Web Y ou can enter alphanumeric characters by using your phone’s keyp ad.
Connections 94 Viewing w eb pa ges Zoom In or Out 1. On a web page, touch and hold a section of the screen until the page sizing tool displays 2. T ouch the minus symbol to reduce the size of th e pa ge, or touch the plus symb ol to increase the size of the page.
95 Switching between multiple browser windows 䊳 From the Browser , press , then touch Window . The new window opens and th e other window is hidden behind the new window . Note: If more than two windows are open, you will see thumbnails of the multiple windows open and are able to select which window to view.
Connections 96 How Wi-Fi Works Wi-Fi provides wireless Internet access ov er distances of up to 300 feet. T o use Wi-F i you need access to a wireless access po int (hotspot). What T h is Means to Y ou When you are not in range of a Wi -Fi connec tion, your normal cellular networ k takes over and k eeps you connected.
97 Note: The next time the phone connects to a previously accessed secured wireless network, you are not prompted to enter the security key again, unless you reset your phone to the factory default settings.
Connections 98 T -Mobile HotSpot Connections With the T -Mobil e HotSpot Network you have unlimited Wi -Fi access on the T -Mobile HotSpot N etwork in the U.S. When you install this application you have thousands of locatio ns around the cou ntr y - and around the world - in coffeehouses, restaurants, hotels, airports, and more.
