Getting star ted 10 Installing the SIM or USIM card and batt er y Inser t the SIM or USIM card provided b y the mobile telephone ser vice provider , and the included battery . Getting star ted 11 2 Inser t the SIM or USIM card with the gold- colour ed contac ts facing down wards. Getting star ted 14 Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. A computer can be also used to charge the devic e by connecting them via the USB cable. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables.
Getting star ted 15 Connecting the charger improperly ma y cause serious damage to the device . Any damage caused by misuse is not co ver ed by the warranty . • The device can be used while it is char ging , but it may take longer to fully char ge the battery .

Getting star ted 17 Inser ting a memor y card Y our device accepts memor y cards with maximum capacities of 64 GB . D epending on the memor y card manufacturer and type, some memory cards may not be compatible with y our device . • Some memor y cards may not be fully compa tible with the device .
Getting star ted 18 Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val. On the Home scr een, tap Apps → Settings → Stor age → Unmount SD card . 1 Remove the back c over . 2 Pull out the memory card. 3 Replace the back cov er .
Getting star ted 19 T urning the devic e on and off When turning on the device f or the first time, f ollow the on-screen instructions to set up your device .
Getting star ted 20 L ock ing and unlock ing the devic e When not in use, lock the devic e to prevent un wanted operation. P ressing the P ower button turns off the screen and puts the device int o lock mode. The device automa tically gets locked if it is not used for a specified period .
Getting star ted 21 S witching bet w een net w orks When you insert t wo SIM or USIM car ds, you can use two diff erent subscriptions on the same network without the need to carr y two devices at the same time . Activate two car ds and switch between them when making calls or sending messages.
22 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.
Basics 23 Icon Meaning Error occurr ed or caution required Battery power level U sing the touch scr een Use only fingers to use the t ouch screen. • Do not allow the touch scr een to come int o contact with other electr ical devices . Electrostatic discharges can cause the touch scr een to malfunc tion.
Basics 24 Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 25 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 26 C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device. Befor e using motions, make sur e the motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → Motion , and then drag the Motion switch to the right. Exc essive shaking or impac t to the device ma y result in unintended inputs.
Basics 27 Picking up When you pick up the devic e after it has been idle for some time or when the scr een has turned off , it vibrates if you ha ve missed calls or new messages. T urning o ver T ur n ov er the device to mut e ringtone, pause media pla yback, or mute the FM radio (when using the speaker).
Basics 28 Shaking • Shake the device to sear ch for Bluetooth devices . • Shake the device to updat e the list of emails or information from Y ahoo News, Y ahoo F inance, or Ac cuWea ther . Updates will not w ork for widgets on the Home scr een.
Basics 29 • Bluetooth : Activate or deactivate the Bluet ooth featur e. • Mobile data : Activate or deactivate the da ta connection. • Blocking mode : Activate or deactivate blocking mode. In block ing mode , the device will block notifications.
Basics 30 Moving an item T ap and hold an item and drag it t o a new location. T o move it to another panel , drag it to the side of the screen. Removing an item T ap and hold an item, and drag it t o the rubbish bin that appears at the top of the Home screen.
Basics 31 U sing applications This device can run man y different types of applications , ranging fr om media to Internet applications. Opening an application On the Home screen or the Applications scr een, selec t an application icon to open it .
Basics 32 Organising with f olders Put r elated applications together in a f older for con venience . T ap → Edit , tap and hold an application, and then drag it to Crea te folder . Enter a f older name and then tap OK . Put applica tions into the new f older by dragg ing, and then tap S ave to sav e the ar rangement.
Basics 33 Ent ering te x t Use the Samsung Indian keyboard, the Samsung keyboar d, or the v oice input fea ture to en ter text. T ext entr y is not suppor ted in some languages . T o ent er text, you must change the input language to one of the suppor ted languages .
Basics 34 Using the Samsung ke yboard Changing the ke yboard la yout T ap → P or trait keyboard types , and then tap Qwer ty keyboard or 3x4 keyboar d . On the 3x4 keyboard , a key has three or f our charac ters. T o enter a char acter , tap repeat edly the key corresponding to the char ac ter .
Basics 35 Handwriting T ap and hold → tap , and then write a wor d with a finger . Suggested wor ds appear as characters are ent ered. Select a suggested wor d. Use handwriting gestures t o per form actions, such as editing or deleting characters and inser ting spaces.

Basics 37 Setting up acc ounts Google applications, such as Play St ore , requir e a Google account, and Samsung Apps requir es a Samsung account. C reate Google and Samsung acc ounts to ha ve the best experience with the device .
Basics 38 C onnec ting with S amsung Kies Samsung Kies is a computer application that manages media libraries , contacts, and calendars, and syncs them with Samsung devices . D ownload the lat est S amsung Kies from the Samsung website . 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable.
Basics 39 Securing the device Pr event others from using or acc essing personal data and information stored in the devic e by using the security features . The device requir es an unlock code whenever unlocking it. Setting a face unlock On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Lock scr een → Screen lock → F ace unlock .
Basics 40 Setting a passwor d On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P asswor d . Enter at least f our charac ters including numbers and symbols , and then enter the passw ord again to verify it.
41 C ommunication Phone Use this application to make or answ er a call. T ap Phone on the Applications screen. Mak ing calls Mak ing a call Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Keypad : Enter the number using the keypad , and then tap or . • Logs : Make a call from the history of incoming and outgoing calls and messages.
Communication 42 F inding contacts Enter a name , phone number , or email address to find a c ontact in the contacts list. As characters are ent ered, pr edic ted contacts appear . Selec t one to place a call to it . Mak ing an interna tional call T ap and hold 0 until the + sig n appears.
Communication 43 Adding c ontac ts T o add a phone number to the c ontac ts list from the keypad , enter the number and tap Add to C ontac ts . V iewing call logs T ap Logs to view the history of incoming and outgoing calls. T o filter a call log , tap → V iew by , and then select an option.
Communication 44 Receiving calls Answ ering a call When a call comes in, drag outside the circle , or press the headset button. If the call waiting ser vice is active, another call can be made . When the second call is answer ed, the first call is put on hold .
Communication 45 Ending a call T ap End call to end a call. Or pr ess the headset button. V ideo calls Mak ing a video call Enter the number or select a contact from the contacts list, and then tap to make a video call. During a video call The f ollowing actions are available: • Swit ch camera : Switch between the fr ont and rear camera.
Communication 46 Sw apping images Drag an image of either par ty onto the other par ty ’ s image to swap the images . C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontac ts, including phone numbers , email addresses , and others. T ap Con tacts on the Applications screen.
Communication 47 Editing a con tac t Selec t a contact to edit, and then tap . Deleting a contact T ap → Delete . Setting a speed dial number T ap → Speed dial setting , select a speed dial number , and then select a contact for it. T o remov e a speed dial number , tap and hold it, and then tap Remov e .
Communication 48 Impor ting and expor ting contacts Syncing with Google C ontac ts T ap → Merge with Google . Contacts synced with Google Con tacts appear with in the contacts list. If a contact is added or deleted on the device, it is also added to or delet ed from Google Contacts, and vic e versa.
Communication 49 F av ourite con tac ts T ap , and then take one of the follo wing actions: • Search : Search for c ontac ts. • Add t o F av ourites : Add c ontacts to favourites . • Remov e from F avourites : Remove c ontacts from favourit es.
Communication 50 Messaging Use this application to send t ex t messages (SMS) or multimedia messages (MMS). T ap Messaging on the Applications screen. Y ou may incur additional charges for sending or r eceiving messages while you are outside your home service area.
Communication 51 V iewing incoming messages Incoming messages are gr ouped into message threads by con tact. Selec t a contact to view the person ’ s message . Listening to a v oice message T ap and hold 1 on the keypad , and then follow the instructions from your service provider .
Communication 52 Reading messages Selec t an email accoun t to use , and new messages are retriev ed. T o manually retriev e new messages, tap . T ap a message to r ead. Open attachments. Reply to the message. Add this email addr ess to the contacts list.
Communication 53 Sending messages In any mailbox, tap , enter r ecipients, a subject, and a message, and then tap . T ap → Attach picture to attach images . T ap → Attach video to attach videos . T ap → Add C c/Bcc to add more r ecipients. T ap → Save dr af t to sav e the message for later deliv er y .
Communication 54 T alk Use this application to cha t with others via Google T alk. T ap T alk on the Applications screen. W eb & network 58 Searching the w eb by voic e T ap the address field , tap , speak a keywor d, and then select one of the suggested key wor ds that appear . Syncing with other de vices Sync open tabs and bookmarks to use with Chrome on another device , when you ar e logged in with the same Google account.
W eb & network 59 P airing with other Bluetooth devices On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Bluetooth → Scan , and detected devices are listed. Select the device you wan t to pair with, and then acc ept the auto- generated passkey on both devices to c onfirm.
W eb & network 60 Sharing files Selec t a device or w eb storage , selec t a file, tap , and then use the f ollowing options: • Group Pla y : Share scr eens with multiple other devices that ar e connected to the same Wi-F i network. • F acebook / T witter / F lickr / Picasa : Upload files to a social network site .
W eb & network 61 Group Pla y Use this application to shar e images, documents, and music with other devic es that are connected to the same W i-F i net work. T ap Group Pla y on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider .

Media 63 Setting a song as ringtone T o use the curren tly-playing song as ringtone , tap → Set as → Phone ringtone . Crea ting playlists Make an own selection of songs. T ap Playlists , and then tap → Crea te playlist . Enter a title and tap OK .
Media 64 T ak ing photos T ak ing a photo T ap the image on the preview scr een where the camera should focus . When the subject is in focus , the focus frame turns green. T ap to take the photo . Indicates which storage is in use . Switch between still and video mode.
Media 65 • Autumn c olour : Use this setting f or red-shifted backgr ound scener y . • Te x t : Use this setting f or books or posters. • Candlelight : Use this setting f or images of bright light against a dark background . • F irework : Use this setting f or high- contr ast scenes.
Media 66 T ak ing videos T ak ing a video Slide the still-video switch to the video ic on, and then tap to take a video . T o stop recor ding, tap . • Manual focus is not av ailable in video mode. • The zoom function may not be av ailable when recor ding at the highest resolution.
Media 67 T ap to change rec ording mode. • Normal : Use this mode f or normal quality . • Limit for MMS : Use this mode to lo wer quality for sending via messag ing. Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Use the V olume button to zoom in or out .
Media 68 C onfiguring settings for Camer a T ap t o configure settings for C amera. Not all of the follo wing options are available in both still camera and video camera modes . The av ailable options var y depending on the mode used. • Edit shor tcuts : Reorganise shor tcuts to fr equently-used options.

Media 71 Editing images When viewing an image, tap and use the following functions: • Slideshow : Star t a slideshow with the images in the curren t folder . • F ace tag : Register the faces in the image as fac e tags. • T ag buddy : Set the camera to display c ontextual tags.
Media 72 Sharing images Use one of the f ollowing methods: • In a folder , tap → Selec t item , select images, and then tap t o send them to others. • When viewing an image, tap to send it to others or share it via social network services.
Media 73 Deleting videos T ap → Delete , select videos by tick ing, and then tap Delete . Sharing videos T ap → Share via , select videos by tick ing, tap Done , and then select a sharing method. Y ou T ube Use this application to w atch videos fr om the Y ou T ube website .

90 Settings About Settings Use this application to c onfigure the device, set application options , and add accounts. T ap Settings on the Applications screen. Wi - Fi Activate the Wi-F i featur e to connect to a Wi-F i network and access the Internet or other network devices.
Settings 91 Setting Net w ork notification The device can det ect open Wi-F i networks and display an icon on the sta tus bar to notify when available . On the Settings screen, tap Wi - Fi → → Adv anced and tick Network notification to activate this fea ture .
Settings 92 More settings Cust omise settings to contr ol connec tions with other devices or networks. F light mode This disables all wireless functions on your devic e. Y ou can use only non-network services. Mobile networks • Mobile data : Use to allo w packet switching data networks f or network ser vices.
Settings 93 Home screen mode Selec t a Home screen mode (basic or easy). Block ing mode Selec t which notifications will be blocked or set to allo w notifications for calls from specified contacts in block ing mode. SIM card manager Activate y our SIM or USIM cards and customise the SIM card settings .

Settings 95 St orage View memory information for y our device and memor y card, or f ormat a memor y card. F ormatting a memor y card permanently deletes all data fr om it. The actual available capacity of the internal memor y is less than the specified capacity because the operating system and default applications oc cupy par t of the memor y .
Settings 96 L ocation ser vices Change settings for location inf ormation permissions. • Use wir eless networks : Set the device to use W i-F i and/or mobile net works f or finding the current location. • Use GPS sat ellites : Set the device to use the GPS satellit e for finding the current location.
Settings 97 Securit y Change settings for securing the device and the SIM or USIM car d. • Encr ypt device : Set a password t o encr ypt data sav ed on the device. Y ou must enter the passwor d each time you turn on the device . Charge the batt er y befor e enabling this setting because it may take more than an hour to encr ypt your da ta.

106 T r oubleshooting When y ou turn on your devic e or while you ar e using the device , it prompts y ou to enter one of the f ollowing codes: • P assword: When the device lock f eature is enabled, y ou must enter the password y ou set for the devic e.
T roubleshooting 107 Y our device fr eezes or has fatal errors If your device freez es or hangs, you may need t o close progr ams or reset the device t o regain functionalit y . If your device is fr ozen and unr esponsive , press and hold the P ower butt on for 8-10 seconds.
T roubleshooting 108 A udio quality is poor • Ensure that y ou are not block ing the device ’ s internal ant enna. • When you ar e in areas with weak signals or poor r eception, you may lose rec eption. M ov e to another area and try again.
T roubleshooting 109 Error messages appear when launching the camer a Y our S amsung device must ha ve sufficient a vailable memor y and battery power to opera te the camera application.
