Getting Started 7 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to get started with your phone by installing and chargin g the ba ttery , installing the micro SIM card and optional memor y card, and setting up your voice mail.
8 Special T ext Throughout this manual, you’ll fi nd text that is set a part from the rest. These are intended to point out important information, shar e quick methods for activating fea tures, to define terms, and more.
Getting Started 9 T o replace the battery cover: Position the battery cover o ver the batter y compartment and press do wn until you hear a click. SIM Car d Over view Import ant! Before removing or replaci ng the micro SIM card, make sure the device is switched off.
10 Installing and R emo ving the SIM card This device uses a different type of SIM card called a “ micro SIM”. Other larger SIM cards will not function or fit within this slot. T o install t he SIM card: 1. Carefully slide the micro SIM card into the SI M card socket until it clicks into place.
Getting Started 11 Installing the microSD Memory Card Y our device supports an optional (external) m icroSD™ memory cards for storage of media such as music, pictures, video and o ther files. The S D card is designed for use with this mobile device and other devices.
12 Bat ter y Before using your devi ce for the first ti me, install the batt ery and charg e it fully . Important! Before removing or replacing the batter y , make sure the device is switched off. T o turn the device off, hold down the key until the power-off image displays, then ta p Powe r of f .
Getting Started 13 Charging the Batter y Y our device is powered by a re chargeable Li-ion battery . A wall charger , which is used for charging t he batter y , is included with your device. Use only approved batteries and chargers. Ask your local Samsung dealer for further de tails.

While the device is charging , if the touch screen does not function due to an unstable power supply unplug the USB p ower adapter from the power outlet or unplug the USB cable from the device. Note: This illustration displays both the correct and incorrect orientation f or connecti ng the charger .
Getting Started 15 Low Ba tter y Indicator When the batt ery level is lo w and only a few minutes of talk time remain (~15% charg e), a warning tone sounds and the “Batter y low” mess age repea ts at regular inter vals on the display . In this condition, your device conserves its remaining battery power , by dimming the backlight.
16 • Use the T ask Manage r feature to end/sh utdown backgr ound appli cations tha t are still running. These m inimized a pplicat ions can, over time, cause your device to “sl ow down” . • T urn off any streaming ser vices after use (see Running Ser vices).
Getting Started 17 6. At the Got Google? screen, choose either Ye s to log into your existing Google account or No to continue. • If you selected Ye s , on the Sign in screen, enter you r current Google Email and P assword information and tap ( ) Next .
18 13. Accept the current device name. – or – Ta p t h e Device name field and use the on-screen keyboard to rename your device. Important! The device name is also used to provide an identifica tion for your de vice’ s Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Direct names.

Getting Started 21 Confir ming the Default Image and Video Stor age Location Although the device is configur ed to store new pictures and videos to the Memor y card, it is a very good idea to confirm this location before using your device. Important! T oo many us ers can overlook this stor age destination until something goes wrong.

26 Google Now Google Now ® recognizes a users’ repeated actio ns performed on the device (i ncluding access of common locations, repeated calenda r appointments, search queries, etc.). This information is t hen used to display more relevant information to the user in the form of “cards”.

Understanding Y our Device 29 2. Light (RGB ) Sensor lets you use the ambient light level to adjust the screen brig ht ness/contrast. This sensor decreases screen brightness in dim light. • In a bright light condition (outdo ors), the sensors cause the device to increase the brightne ss and contrast for better viewing.
30 5. Microphones are used during phone calls and allo w other callers to hear you clearly when you are speaking to them. There are two micropho nes on the device: • Bottom microphone: used d uring handset mode.

32 De vice Display Y our display provide s information about the device’s status, and is the interface to manage features. The display indicates your connection stat us, signal strength, battery status and time.
Understanding Y our Device 33 Indicates there is no signal available. Displays when there is no SIM card in the phone. Displays when there is a system error or a lert. Displays to indica te a security warning. Y ou are prompted to set a screen lock password.
34 Displays your current batter y charge level is low (Charge: ~28% - 15%). Displays your current batter y charge level is very lo w (Charge: ~15% - 5%). Shows your current ba ttery only has up to 4% power remaining and will soon shutdo wn. (Charge: ~4% - 1%).

42 • Primary Shortcuts : are four shortcuts present throughout all of the available scr eens and can be us ed to both navigate within the device or la unch any of the following functions: – Phone ( ) launches the phone-rel ated screen functi ons (Keypad, Logs, Favorites, and Contacts).

48 Using the Multi W indow This feature allows you to run multiple applications on the current screen at the s ame time. Note: Only applications found within the Multi win dow panel can be active atop another current a pplication on the screen.

54 Using Sub-Men us Sub-menus are available from within most screen and applications. 1. Press . A sub-menu displays at the bottom of the screen. 2. T ap an available on-scre en option. Using Context Men us Context menus (also called po p-up menus) contain options that apply to a specific ite m on the screen.

56 Adding and Deleting Screens Y our phone comes with seven screens . Y ou can delete these screens and then add them back la ter . Note: These screens can be deleted and re-arran ged. Important! Y our phone can only con tain at most seven screens and at least one screen.

58 4. Scroll across the pa ges and in a single motion, touch and hold an application to place a copy on the cur rent screen. T o delete a sho rtcut: 1. From the Home screen, touch and hold the desired shortcut. This unlocks it from its location on the current screen.
Understanding Y our Device 59 Adding and R emo ving Widgets Widgets are self-contained app lica tions that can be placed on any screen. Unlike short c uts, widgets appear as applica tions. T o add a Widget: 1. From the Home screen, tap ( Apps ) ➔ Widgets tab.
60 Managing Wallpapers Wallpapers consist of either Galle ry im ages (user taken), Live wallpapers (anima ted backgrounds), or Wallpaper gallery (default phone wallpaper s). Note: Selecting animated Live wallpa pers will require additional battery po wer .

Call Functions and Contacts List 63 Quick Dialing a Num ber from the Contacts List 1. From the Home screen, tap ( Contacts ). 2. Locate a contact from the list. 3. In a single motion, touch and dr ag your finger over the number by going to the right. This action plac es a call to the recipient .
64 Making Emergency Calls If you do not have a SIM card installed the first time you turn on the phone, the Insert SIM card to make calls message displays and an animated tutorial show s you how to install the SIM card. Without a SIM card, you can only make an emergency call with the phone; normal cell phone se rvice is not a vailable.
Call Functions and Contacts List 65 Dialing Options When you enter numbers on the Keypad, you will see three on-screen options. From the keypad screen, use one of the following options: • Voic email ( ) to access your Voicemail service. • Call ( ) to call the entered number .
66 If the incoming call is from a number stored in your Contacts, the entry’ s name is displayed. Y ou may also see the caller’ s phone number , if available. Answ ering a call with Air Gesture 1. Verify the Air Gestures feature is on and Air call-accept is active.

68 Pause Dialing Y ou can dial o r save phone numb ers with pauses for use with automated systems, such as voice mail or financial phone numbers. • 2-Second Pause automatically sends th e next set of numbers after a two-second pau se. This is indica ted in the number st ring as a comma ( , ).
Call Functions and Contacts List 69 Redialing the Last Number The device stores the numbers of the calls you’ve dialed, received, or missed if the caller i s identified. T o recal l any of these numbers: 1. From the Home screen, tap . 2. Ta p t h e ( Logs tab) to display th e list of recent calls.
70 Changing a Speed Dial Entr y Or der 1. From the Home screen, tap ➔ Keypad tab. 2. Press and then tap Speed dial setting . Important! The number 1 is reser ved for Voicemail and another number cannot be assigned to this sl ot. 3. Press and then tap Change order .
Call Functions and Contacts List 71 W i-Fi Calling Wi-Fi Calling is a free fea ture for T -Mobile customers using this device with the new SIM card. Wi-Fi Calling is an excellent solution for coverage issues in and around the home or wherever cellular co verage is limited.
72 Note: With certain rate p lans, mi nutes used while connected to the Wi-Fi network count against a vailable rate plan minutes . Important! If you are not using a new ISIM card, you will receive an Error: ERxx Inv alid SIM message. Y ou must be using a new ISIM card to use t his feature.

Ta p Wi-Fi Cal ling slider to toggle off the fea ture, then tap it again to reactiva te the feature and re-regis ter your device wi th the T -Mobile Network.
74 In Call Options Y our device provides a number of fea tures that are a vailable for use during a call. Note: Noise reduction and Extra volume fea tures are disabled while using Wi-Fi Calling. Adjusting the Call V olume During a call, use the Volume ke ys on the left side of the device, to adjust the earpiece volume.
Call Functions and Contacts List 75 Adjusting Noise Reduction During a call it may be ne cessary t o adjust the noise reduction feature. Activating this feature can improve t he quality of your conversation by reducing ambient n oise. 1. Ta p ( Noise reduct ion off ) to toggle the status and activate the feature.
76 T ur ning the Speake r phone on and off While on a call, you ca n use your Speakerphone by following these steps: 1. Ta p ( Speaker off ) to toggle the speakerphone on. 2. Ta p ( Speaker on ) to toggle the speakerphone off. Tip : When the speaker is turned On , the color of the speaker is green.
Call Functions and Contacts List 77 Creating a Messa ge During a Call During a call you can crea te a message. 1. Press and then tap Message ➔ ( Compose ). 2. Address and create the messa ge. 3. Review your message and tap ( Send ). Creating a Memo During a Call During a call it may be nece ssary to recor d information (a Note).
78 Important! Multiple callers can be joined to a single multi-party line. Additional callers participa te in a new Multiparty session and are held in conjunction with the previous multiparty call. Y ou can s wap or place each multi-pa rty ca ll on hold.

The participant is discon ne cted and you can contin ue the call with th e other participant. 2. T ap to en d your conve rsation with the remaining caller .
80 Using S V oice This is a voice recognition a pplicati on used to activate a wide variety of functions on your device. This is a na tural language recognition applica tion. This goes beyond the Google Search Voice Actions feature that simply recognizes Google commands and sear ch terms.
Call Functions and Contacts List 81 Logs T ab The Logs tab is a list of the phone numbers (or Contacts entries) for calls you placed, accepte d, or missed.
82 Accessing Call log from T he Notifications Area 1. Locate from the Notifications area o f the Status bar . 2. T ap the Status bar to reveal the Notifi cations tab, and then drag the tab to the bottom of the screen to open the Notificat ions panel. 3.

84 Call Duration 1. From the Home screen, tap ➔ Logs tab. 2. Press and then tap Call duration . 3. The following times a re displayed for Voice and Data: •L a s t c a l l : shows the length of time for the last call. • Diale d cal ls : shows the total length o f time for all calls made.
Entering T ext 85 Section 4: Entering T e xt This section describes ho w to select the desi red text input method when entering characte rs into your device. This section also describes the predic tive text entr y system tha t reduces the amount of key strokes associa ted with entering text.
86 Entering T ext Using Swype Swype™ is the defa ult text input method th at allows you to enter a word by sliding y our fing er or stylus from letter to letter , lifting your finger between words. Sw ype uses error correcting algorithms and a la nguage model to predict the next word.
Entering T ext 87 Selecting a T ext Input Mode in Swype 1. From a screen where you can enter text, tap the text input field to reveal the on-screen keyboard. 2. With Swype as your text en try method, select one of the following text mode option s: •A B C to use Swype w ith alphanumeric char acters from the on-scr een keyboar d.
88 Using 123ABC Mode in SW YPE In 123ABC mode, you can enter only letters and a few common punctuation marks from the on-screen keyboard. The text mode key shows . 1. From a screen where you can enter text, tap the text input field to reveal the on-screen keyboard.
Entering T ext 89 By default, the first letter of an entr y is capitalized and the following lette rs are lower case. Aft er a word is entered and you lift your fing er , the cursor automatically adds a s pace after the w ord.
90 Using the Samsung K eyboard This QWERTY keyboard can be used to enter text in either a Portrait or landscape orienta tion. The only difference between the two orientations are the sizes of the keys. From a screen where you ente r text, rotate yo ur phone counterclockwise to a landscape orienta tion.
Entering T ext 91 Entering T ext using Differ ent Input Options Although the default text input method with the Samsung keyboard is to use the on-screen keys you have other options . Note: T o access settings, touch and hold the Input Methods button , then tap ( Settings ) then select it from the available options.
92 Note: After typing an initial uppercase characte r , tap to toggle capitalization. By default, the first letter of a new entry is ca pitalized and the following letter s are lowercased . After a character is entered, the cursor automatically advances to the next space.
Entering T ext 93 Using Symbol/Numeric Mode Use the Symbol/Numeric Mode to add numbe rs, symbols, or emoticons. While in this mode, the tex t mode key displays . 1. From a screen where you can enter text, tap the text input field to reveal the on-screen keyboard.

From a screen where you can enter text, in a single motion, touch and drag the Status bar down to the bottom of the screen , then select ( Select input method ) ➔ Google voice ty ping . The virtual keyboard is then removed and all subseque nt input to done via the microphone as text to speech.
Contacts 95 Section 5: Contacts This section explains how to use and manage your Contacts List. Y ou can save phone numbers to your phone’ s memor y . Accounts From the Acc ounts menu you decide if you want applications to synchronize, send, and receive data a t any given time, o r if you want the a pplications to sy nchronize automa tically.
96 Note: If the phone is ever reset to its facto ry default parameters, contacts stored on the phone can be lost. • SIM contacts are stored within the micro SIM Card .
