Getting Started 5 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to start using your phone by first configuring your hardware, activa ting your service, and then setting up your voice mail. Setting Up Y our Phone Prior to use it is necessar y to install both the ba tter y and SIM into their corresponding internal co mpartments.
6 Note: If the card is not inserted correctly , the phone does not detect the SIM card. Re-orient the card back into the slot if the SIM is not detected. Installing the Mem or y Card Y our phone also supports the use of a memory card (microSD™) for data storage of such things as data, music, pictures, and video files.
Getting Started 7 3. Place the ba ttery cover onto the back o f the phone and press down (1). 4. Press down on the bottom of the phone (2) until you hear a light cli ck. Note: Make sure the battery is properly installed before s witching on the phone.
8 Important!: Verify that the handset battery is installed prior to connection. If the battery is not properly installed and the wall charger is connected, the handset may power off and on continuously , preventing proper operation.
Getting Started 9 Switching the Phon e On or Of f 1. Press and hold or until the phone switches on. The phone launches the activati on splash screen and then proceeds to search for the network. Once the network has been found, you can ma ke or receive calls.

16 Using the Multitasking Menu This key ( ) launches the Multitask menu tha t can be activated f rom within any a ctive window or page on the phone. There is no need to st op what you are doing, if you quickly want to jump out and activate another common feature.
Understanding Y our Phone 17 When any Java application, such as a game, is paused, suspended, or minimized, the Mult itask screen is modified to include t he Java application. In the example below , the bowling game has been paused. To u c h t h e Up or Down arrows to scroll up or down.
18 Section 3: Menu Naviga tion This section explains the menu na vigation for your phone. The a897 has done away with the n eed for navigation wheels or keypads. The a897 is complete ly navigable by either an on-screen touch or scroll. • T ouching an on-scr een option activates th e feature.
Menu Navigation 19 Navigating T hroug h the Ma in Menus The a897 originally has three main menus but you can add two more main m enus for a total of five . Some icons can be dele ted and replaced with new icons. 1. From the Idle screen, touch . Main menu 1 is displayed.
20 The Menu Items scre en is displayed. 4. T ouch one of t he Menu Items to have the ic on for that feature or applica tion added to your menu. Default items that already have icons on a menu will be grayed out. 5. Continue to add Icons that you want on a main menu.

22 Note: Scrolling requires that you press firmly on the screen then drag. When scrolling through a list make sure not to touch or press individual entries on the list as this will open the list entry.

T o uch t he Alarm Time field and then adjust the hour a nd minutes values by entering ma nually (Keypad tab) or using either the +/- butt ons or by quickly sliding your fingertip over the numbers (Jog tab). W idgets The Widget bar provides quick access to mini-programs (widgets).
24 Addi ng and De let ing Widget s T o select which item s are displayed or hi dden within the Widget bar: 1. From Idle mode, open the Widget bar and touch . 2. T ouch the c heck box to place a chec k mark next to the Widget you want to display . – or – T ouch the c heck box again to re move the check mark and hide the Widget.

26 Sound Profile : allows you to qui ckly modify your current sound Profil e. For more informat ion, refer to “Sound Profiles” on page 52. Bluetooth : From this a pplication you can activate Bluetooth and configure it so other Bluetooth devices can see your device by name.
Menu Navigation 27 Widget Bar Navigation Y ou can drag the widgets to the desktop (Idle Screen) to use the application or feature, then drag it back to the Widget Bar when you are finished. There are thr ee different widg et desktops you can use. Y ou can have different widgets on all three desktops.
28 Undocking W idgets Y ou can easily customize t he Widget bar by either keep ing these mini-apps docked within the ba r itself or undocking them by dragging anywhere onto yo ur Main disp lay screen.
Menu Navigation 29 Tip: Flick the screen in an upward motion to quickly scroll through the list. Accessing Mu l tiple Widget Deskto ps 1. Drag your finger along the thre e bars at the top of the Main menu to scroll through the th ree widget desktops. Y o u can scroll in either direction.
30 Note: After the Event Widget appears on the Main Display, it will remain there until you drag it back to the Widget bar . Displays withi n the Event Widget as a tab when a new message is rece ived. Displays withi n the Event Widget as a tab when a new chat message is received.
Call Functions 31 Section 4: Call Functions This section describes how to make or answer a c all. It also includes the features and functional ity associated with ma king or answering a call . For more informat ion, refer to “Call Settings” on page 67.
32 Corr ecting an Entered N umber Use the following st eps to correct a mis-typed entr y when dialing. 1. After entering a number using the keypad. • If you make a mist ake, touch to erase a sing le character . • Press and hold to erase the entire st ring of nu mbers.
Call Functions 33 2. The Speed Dial screen displays showing the numbers 1 through 9. The number 1 is reserved for Voice Mail. 3. T ouch an unused number and the Contacts screen displays. 4. Select a conta ct to assign to the number . Y o u can also tap on the search box and enter the first few l etters of the name you are searching for .
34 Other Ans we ring Options When receiving an incoming cal l: • Briefly press down either volume key ( ) to mute the ring tone. – or – T o mute the ring tone when the phone is facing upwards, flip the phone over so tha t it is facing down.
Call Functions 35 Import ant!: When establishing a Video Share session, only the sender of the video clip can save the file. 5. The recipient will receive a Video Share pop-up to either Accept or Reject th e Video Share call. They should press the Accept soft key to continue or Reject soft key to rej ect the invitatio n.
36 Play a Video Sh are Recording During a call (while not in a Liv e Video Sh are session) you can share a recorded vide o for the re cipient. 1. T ouch More ➔ Vid eo S ha re ➔ Recorded and then select from the availa ble files in your Vi d eo folder .
Call Functions 37 Note: If there is a voicemail sent by the same number , associa ted icons are displayed and can then be selected. 2. Scroll through the li st of missed calls. 3. T o move to another call type, touch the call drop-down list (upper right of Calls page) and make your selection.
38 6. T o add additional recipients , touch the yellow rec ipients field. Insert new recipients by: • Pressing the y ellow fi eld and t hen enteri ng the numbe r manuall y . • Selecting from Recent Contacts to choose yo ur recipient. • Select an entr y f rom your Contacts list.
Call Functions 39 5. Enter the user-defined password and touch OK to reset all counters. For more in formation, refer to “Change Phone Password” on page 65. • Press or to cancel this o peration. Dat a Counter Data Counter refers to the amount of data (volume) to and from the phone.
40 • Speaker On/Off routes the phone’ s audio through either the speaker or through the earpiece. – Slide Speaker to On to route the audio th rough the speaker .
Call Functions 41 Switching Be tween Calls When you have an ac tive call and a call on hold , you may switch between the two calls, changi ng the one on hold to acti ve and placing the other on hold.
42 Example: Y ou wish to say something to person in the room, but do not want the person on the phone to hear you. Note: If you are already in Video Share or you ha ve a call on hold, you need to select Mute/Unmute. T o switc h the micr ophone of f tempor arily during a call 1.
Call Functions 43 This feature joins all of the calls you have established with your phone (both active and on ho ld) into a multi-party call. 1. Press to answer the first incoming call. 2. Press or Accept to answer the next incoming call. The first call is auto matically put on hold.
44 Section 5: Entering T e xt This section outlines ho w to select the desi red text entry mode when entering characters usin g the Q WERTY keyboard-sty le keypad. This section also describe s how to use the T 9 predictive text entry system to reduce the number of key strokes needed to enter text.
Entering T ext 45 Changing the T ext Input Mode - K eypad There are three ma in keypad layout keys that will chang e the on- screen keys within the QWERTY keypa d. The available T ext Input modes are: T9 , 123Sym , and Abc . Refer to the T ext Input mode in the up per right hand corner to identify which mode you are currently in.
46 2. T ouch the T ext Input Mode button at the bottom of the screen and touch . The T9 letters will turn green and will appear in the upper right corner of the screen. 3. Begin typing a word. A list of word op tions displays and incl udes a number indicating the words avai lable to chose from.

48 Using Numeric in P or trait Mode The Numeric mode enables you to enter numbers into a text message. 䊳 T ouch the T ext Input Mode button at the bo ttom of the screen and select Numeric ( ) , then touch the keys corresponding to the digits you want to enter .
Entering T ext 49 3. Use your finger tip to write ou t each character . T ouch the Shift key to use uppercase letters. T ouch the Space key ( ) to create a space between letters, numbers, or symbols. Note: T o properly recognize the written characters and to prevent scratching of the LCD, do not use script.
50 The following buttons can also be used in Handwriting mode: Handwriting Mode-Entering Character s 1. T ouch the T ext Input Mode button at the bottom of the screen and select Abc . The input mode indicator then changes to which activates the Initial uppercase function.

T ouch the Message Alert Repetition pull-down and select one of the following options and touch Save : •O n c e : repeats the mess a ge alert once.
Changing Y our Settings 59 Display and Light Settings In this menu, you can change va rious settings for the display or backlight. 1. From Idle mode, touch ➔ Settings ➔ Display and Light .
60 2. T ouch and hold to eras e the current greeting message. 3. Use the on-screen keypad to enter a new gre eting. 4. T ouch . T ransition Effect Allows you to acti vate/deactiva te the default transition ef fect (wipe) during transitions between menu/options pages.

62 Langua ge This menu allows you to select a display language for T ext language and T ext Input mode. Cho ose from Automatic, English, Français, and Español.
Changing Y our Settings 63 Motion Detection The Motion Detec tion feature can be used for muting an incoming call or a larm, setting Snooze on an alarm, and starting and restarting a timer . 1. From Idle mode, touch ➔ Settings ➔ Phone ➔ Motion Detection .
64 unlock the SIM so you can use a different SIM card. Once you have entered the loc k code, you are asked t o confirm your password. 䊳 T ouch On or Off from the Lock SIM Card field. Note: This lock code is typically the last four digits of the current phone number or can be obtained from an A T&T customer service representative.
Changing Y our Settings 65 1. T o uch On or Off from the Fixed Dialing Mode field. •O n : you can onl y call phone numbers st ored in the Fixed Dial Contacts. Y ou must enter your PIN2 to continue this co nfiguration. Y ou can obta in your PIN2 from AT&T’ s customer se rvice department.

Ensure that you remove your MicroSD card if applicable as it will be erased with the Restore Phone option. Air pl ane Mo de Airplane Mode allows you to use many of your phone’ s features, such as Games, Voice no te, etc.
68 Adjusting the Gene r al Call Settings 1. T ouch General and select from the fol lowing options: • Show My Number : allows you to select how your caller I D is handle d when an outgoing c all is initiat ed. This is w hat others see on their Caller ID screen.

70 4. T ouch . Phone’s Visibility 1. From Idle mode, touch ➔ Settings ➔ Connectivity ➔ Bluetooth ➔ Vis ib l e . 2. T ouch Ye s or No to enable or disable the visibility (discoverability) of your phone. • Y our phone becomes vi sible to ot her devices when you transmit your devi ce’ s name to others i n your area.
Changing Y our Settings 71 Blueto oth Ser vic es The Bluetooth specificati on is a protocol that describes how the short-range wireless te chnology works, whereas se rvices describe the individual devi ces that are supported. These services reduce t he chance that incompat ible devices are allowed to connect to your phone.
