Getting Started 4 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to star t using your SCH-R880 phone by activating your service, setting up your Voicemail, or getting an understanding of how this manual is put together .
5 Charging the Batter y Y our phone is powered by a rechar geable standard Li-Ion batter y . Only use Samsung-approved char ging devices and batteries. Samsung accessories are designed to maximize battery life. Use of other accessories may invalid ate your warranty and may cause damage.
Getting Started 6 Low batter y indic ator The battery indicator ( ) in the upper-right side of th e display indicates power level. Monitor the battery strength and ensure your battery is adequately charged. • Five ba rs ( ) indicate a full charge. • An low battery icon ( ) indicates a near empty battery.

Understanding Y our Phone 14 Landscape Mod e With the QWERTY keypad open, the display rotates automat ically from Portrait mode (as shown above) to Landscape mode (as shown here). Note: Y ou can also rotate many of the screens that appear in the display from Portrait mode to Landscape mode, without opening the QWERTY keypad, by rotating the phone.
15 Changing the Scr een Ori entati on The R880 can automatically cha nge the orientation of some screens. The R880’ s built-in accele rometer senses movement and changes a screen’ s orientatio n from portrait to landscape. Note: Some screens, especially those for applications and games, do not respond to the accelerometer .
Understanding Y our Phone 16 Home Scre en Panels The Home screen has three pane ls. The Center panel appears when you press th e Home key ( ). T o acce ss the Left panel, s wipe across the Home screen, left to right. T o access the Right panel, swip e across the Home screen, right to left.
17 • Speech-to-T ext — Lets you enter words and c haracters by speaking them into your phone’ s microphone. • Smiley — Lets you enter “smiley” characters (emoticons) by touching shortcut buttons. • AL T — Lets you enter mathematic, currency , and other special symbols.

Understanding Y our Phone 20 Menu Naviga tion There are two ways to navigate through a menu: • Using your finger . • Using the T ouchpad. Selecting Me nu Items Using y our Fing ers As you navigate through the menu, you activate menu o ptions by touching the onscreen entry .
21 Main Menu Y ou access the Main Menu from the Home screen. Just touch . The Main Menu slides up from the bo ttom of the screen. Add to Home scr een Menu Lets you add Shortcuts , Widgets , and/or Folders to a Home screen panel. Tip: Y ou can also launch the Add to Home Screen menu by touching and holding an empty place on a Home screen panel.
Understanding Y our Phone 22 Notifications Menu Shows you the network status and explains any n otification icons appearing in the top lef t corner of the Home screen. Setting s Menu Lets yo u enable/ disable communications features (such as, voice, Wi-F i, and Bluetooth communications).

Call Functions 24 V oice Digit Dialing Y our phone includes a voice reco gnition system th at you can use to place call s. 1. T o uch ➔ ➔ Voice Control ( ). Tip: For easier access to V oice Control, you can place a Shortcut to it on a Home screen panel.
25 Call Log Dialing Y our phone stores records of your calls (incoming and outgoing). Y ou can use these records to place calls. 1. From the Home screen, touch ➔ Call log . The Call log screen appears in the displa y . 2. Scroll through the Call Log and locate the desired call.
Call Functions 26 Tip: Voice Dialing Tips: Wait for the beep before speaking. Speak clearly at a normal volume, as if you were talking to someone on the phone. When saying a name, say the first name then the last name. Speak cl early and say the na me of a person in the Con tacts list, first name foll owed by last name.
27 Answ ering a Call Y our phone noti fies you of a call in the fol lowing ways: • A ring tone sounds and/or your phone vibrates (Y our phone provides eight ring volume settings , and/or different ring types to distinguish callers.
Call Functions 28 Thr ee Way Calling Three Way Ca lling lets you add a thrid party to yo ur current call. 1. During a call, touch ➔ Add call . The Dialer screen ap pears in the display , and your existing call is plac ed on hold. 2. Enter a number or select a Contact and touch .

Call Functions 30 How Ro aming W orks Roam Option lets you set roaming p references if you mo ve in and out of your home netw ork. The following roaming opt ions are availa ble: • Home Onl y — Y our phone is available for normal operation only in the designated coverage area.
31 Section 4: Contacts List This section explains how to ma nage your daily contacts by storing their name and number in your Contacts. C ontacts entries are sorted by name. Y our Contacts List Y our Contacts list can store more than 2000 entries, with each contact having up to five associated phone numbers, an Email address , and a picture ID.
Contacts List 32 Adding a New Contact 1. From t he Contacts list, touch ➔ New contact . The Edit contact screen ap pears in the display . 2. T o uch the Given name field. With the phone closed and upright, a virtual QWER TY keypad appears a t the bottom of the screen.

Playing Music and Vid eos 52 Section 7: Playing Music and Videos Loading Media Files Y ou can lo ad media files (MP3 or WMA music and/or MP4 or 3GP video) to your phone over the air or using a P ersonal Computer . Down loading Over the Air 䊳 Save music obtained using the Browser or from the Market to the microSD or microSDHC Memory Card.

Apps (Applications) 54 Section 8: Apps (A pplicat ions) Y our R880 phone includes a number of useful Apps and offers access to the Android Market, where you can pu rchase and download still more Apps. Network-Dependent Apps T o launch many of the Apps loaded on your R880, such as the Maps , your phone must ha ve network access.
55 Launching an App 1. From the Home screen, touch . The Apps menu appears in the display . 2. Swipe up or down across the screen to scroll the menu and find a particular App. 3. T o launch the desired App, touch the related icon. Note: Some applications, such as Market, require you have a Google account and a network connection.

Connections 58 Section 9: Connections This section explains ho w to setup your pho nes network, Wi-F i (Wireless F idelity), Bluetooth, a nd VPN (Virtual Private Network ) connections. Note: Use of these Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and/or VPN wireless connections can increase the drain on your R880’ s battery, shortening your usage time.
