[ 3 ] Welcome 1. W elcome Congratulations on your purchase of a Nokia 7 160 mobile phone. Y ou are now on your way to usin g a new and exciting tool. However , before you use your ph one, read this chapter . It provides information that you need to know about how to use this man ual and how to contact Nokia.
[ 4 ] • Contacting your service provid er Some service providers have pr e-programmed their customer support number into the phone . Pressing and holding the key (or the key that your service provider instructed you to u se) for 2 seconds will automatically dial their customer support number .
[ 5 ] Before you begin 2. Before you begin • Attach your battery Prior to usi ng your phone, the battery m ust be installed and charged. Grasp the phone near the display (rather than on the slide mechanis m). Place the battery in the grooves on the back of your ph one.
[ 6 ] • If the battery is totally empty , it may take a few minutes before you can make and receive calls, and before the charging indicat ion appears on the display .

[ 8 ] • Switch the phone on (or off) To switch the phone on or off, press and h old for 2 seconds. Warn ing ! Do not switch on th e phone when wireless phone use is prohibi ted or whe n it may cause interf erence or danger . As with any other radio tran smitting device, do not touch the antenna unnecessarily when the phone is switched on.
[ 9 ] About your phone Heade r and scr oll bar A header line appears at the top o f your screen when in the phone book or while navigating the menus, providing you wi th a reminder o f the phone book entry you are wor king with, or funct ions as a reminde r of the me nu or sub-menu with which you are working.
[ 1 0 ] Any characters you enter will be lowe r-case letters or numbers . Press the key to switch letter case. Indicates se ntence case. Y ou will not need to s witch between upper case an d lower case for the first word in a sentence. Available when entering cale ndar notes, to-do list events, or writi ng text messages.
[ 1 1 ] About your phone •U s i n g t h e k e y s The following tabl e contains information on u sing the various keys found on your phone: Using the selection keys Two selection keys are located below the display . T heir functions can be identified by the text shown above the keys in the display .
[ 12 ] In this manual, the selection keys are referred to by the texts th at appear above them, and appear in bold (for example, Men u or Names ). Left selec tion ke y The left selection key will frequently displa y one of the most commonly used sub-menus when scrolli ng through the phone’s menu.
[ 13 ] About your phone • Using the sliding cover The sliding cover protects your ph one’s keypad, and can be used to answer , end or reject a call. (See page 2 1 for details.) To open the sliding cover , slide it down. To close the cover , slide it up until it locks into place.
[ 14 ] 3. Rotate the plastic slide cover onto the metal slide frame. Make sure the middle snap is secured properly (turn the ph one over to check). 4. Press the left side of the plastic slide cover onto the metal slide frame until it snaps into place.
[ 15 ] Y our phone’s m enus 4. Y our phone’s menus The phone’ s menus allo w you to tailor the ph one to you r needs. Each menu can contain several levels of submenus. The menus and s u bmenus can be a ccessed by rolling the roller or using the appropriate shortcut n umber (see page 16).
[ 16 ] • Y ou can r eturn to the previous menu level by pressing Back , or exit the menu b y pressi ng Exit (if displayed). • Y ou can exit the menu by pr e ssing and holding Back (including when the slide is closed). • Y ou can always ex it the menu by pressing without changing the menu settings.

[ 23 ] Letters and numbers 6. Letters and numbers When working with the phone book, calendar , or to-do list, you can enter letters and numbers either via the phone’s keypad (1 to 9), or using the roller . When working with text messages or the to- do list, an additional option, call ed "predicti ve text input" is also available.
[ 24 ] Alpha mode has 4 sub-modes: ABC (upper case) and abc (lower case), title case, and sentence case (both indicated by Ab c ). N umeric mode is indicated by 12 3 in the upper left corner of th e display .
[ 25 ] Phone book 7. Phone book Y ou can save up to 1 000 en tries (n ames and associated numbers) in your phone’s phone book. In addition, your phone book is capable o f storing multiple numbers for e ach name (fax, business, mobile, etc.), as well as text inf ormat ion (pos tal address, e-mail address, etc.

[ 28 ] Erasing a phone boo k entry Y ou can remove a phone book entry (name and phone number(s)) from the phone book one by on e or erase the e ntire contents of your phone book. Erasing a phone book entry 1. Press the roller , scroll to the phone book ent ry to erase, and pres s Options .
[ 29 ] Call log 8. Call log Y our phone keeps a log (record) of call-related information including the phone numb er of the ot her p arty . Ca lls are classif ied as misse d (unanswered), received (answered), or dialed (either via the phone book or numbers entered from the keypad).
[ 30 ] Note: If the call log is empty , No numbers is displayed. T IP : Y ou can also access the last 1 0 dialed numbers by pressing then use the roller to scroll through the list. Press and hold the roller to redial the number , or press Opti ons to work with the en try .
[ 3 1 ] Call log Note: When the Dialed calls list is clear ed, it includes the shortcut to this list accessed when you pr ess and roll with the roller . • Other call log options Call timers This menu feature is u sed to display the call duration of the L ast call placed, and All calls made since the phone was r eset by the user .
[ 32 ] 9. V oice messages V oice Mail is a feature th at enables those who call you to leave a voice message, in the event you are unable to answer your phone. Using your phone in conjunction with you r service provider’s voice mail sy stem, you can retrieve your message s at any time.
[ 33 ] Profiles 1 0. Profiles Y our phone has various ways of notifying you of incoming calls, voice and text messages, reminders and warnings. The various settings relating to the audible, visible and vibrating alerts are stored as "profiles" i n your phone.
[ 34 ] 1 1 . Advanced calling features Once you have familiarized yourself with the basic f eatures of your phone, you ma y wan t to cons ider the foll owing featu res to increas e your p roductivit y and enhance you r calling experience.
[ 35 ] Advanced calling features To se nd a series of touch-tones to the wir e less syste m: 1. While in a call, press Options . 2. Select Send touch tones .
[ 36 ] Muting /unmuting t he microphone Y ou can mute and unmute your phone’s microphone while a call is in progress. When your microphone is muted, you can still hear the other caller . 1. P ress Option s . 2. Scroll to Mute , t hen pres s Select .
[ 37 ] Advanced calling features • Call forwarding This network service allows you to forward your incomin g calls to another number (for example, your home or office phone number). Contact your service provider for mor e details, and for the pr ope r activation codes.
[ 38 ] To rejec t a wa itin g cal l Either let the phone ring, or press the Quit selection key . T o switch betw een the 2 calls •P r e s s . T o end the active call Simply allow the other party to hang up; the call on hold then becomes the active call.
[ 39 ] Advanced calling features 3. Press again to connect both parties. 4. To end the call, press . This will discon nect both parties. If you only wish to disconnect with one party , have the other party terminate the call on his/her end. T IP : Y ou can also dial the third party from th e phone book.
[ 40 ] Saving ca lling card information 1. P ress Menu 4- 2-4 . 2. Scroll to the calling card you want to edit, th en press Option s . 3. Scroll to Edit , then pre ss OK . 4. Enter your secu rity code (see page 58), then press OK . 5. At Di aling seque nce , press Select .
[ 4 1 ] Advanced calling features Choosing a call ing card to use Use Me nu 4-2-4 to select a calling card to us e. Y ou will be required to enter your security code. Making calling card calls After you have saved your calling car d in formation in your phone, you can make a call using you r calling card.
[ 42 ] 3. Scroll to Add voi ce tag and press Select . (The phone displays Press Star t, th en spea k af ter the t one ). 4. P ress Start , and after the tone , speak the voice ta g clearly into the phone’s microphone. Note: If recording is not successful, your phone asks if you want to try again.
[ 43 ] Advanced calling features Dialing a number us ing voice dialing 1. At the Start s creen, press and hold th e Names selection key for 2 seconds. A tone is he ard and P lease speak now is displayed. 2. After the tone, c learly speak the voice tag that you recorde d previously into the microphone.
[ 44 ] • 1-touch dialing When a phone number is assigned to one of the number keys (2 to 9), you can call the phone number in either of the following ways: • Press the corresponding number key (2 to 9 ) and press .
[ 45 ] Advanced calling features • Phone book enhancements Multiple numbers per pho ne book entry The phone’ s internal phon e book allow s you to store multiple phone numbers p er name, as well as an e-mail address, street address, an d text notes.
[ 46 ] 4. P ress OK to confirm your choice. War n i ng ! Once an entry is erased, it cannot be recovered. Primary number The first numbe r stored wit h a name is designate d as the "primary n umber ," and is the nu mber dialed when pressing and holding the r oller on the selected name/phone book entry .
[ 47 ] Advanced calling features Saving text informat ion Y ou can store text infor mation (such as E-mail address, postal address, or a personal note) with each phone book entry . Adding a te xt item to a name 1. From the Start screen, press the roller .
[ 48 ] 3. Select Ph one book view . 4. Scroll to select the desired view and press the r oller . • Caller groups Y ou can set the phone to sound a specific ringing tone and flash a graphic (picture) on the display when you receive a call f rom a particular name and phone number .
[ 49 ] Advanced calling features • Group gr aphic Scroll to On , Of f , View , Send grap hic (sen t via SMS) , and press Select . • Group Me mbers Press Select to view group memb ers. To add or remove a member , press Optio ns , then select Add name or Remove name .
[ 50 ] 12. Customize your phone • Customizin g the Navi ro ller Pressing the roller at the Start screen activates the Roller menu . As a default, the Roller menu prov ides access to your ph on e book.
[ 5 1 ] Customize your phone 4. Scroll to th e setting you want to customize (for example, Ri nging tone ) and press the r oller . 5. Scroll to the option you want and press OK . Settings you can customize Ringing optio n Defines how the phon e notifies you of an incoming voice call.
[ 52 ] Vibrat ing aler t If you are using the optional vibrating battery , you can set your phone to vibrate on an incoming voice call. Note: The vibr ating alert does not work when the ph one is connected to a charger or desktop stand.
[ 53 ] Customize your phone Display contrast To adjust the contrast of the phone’s LCD display , pr ess Menu 4-3-5 ( Setting s-Phone settings -Display contras t ), and use the roller to adjust the contrast.
[ 54 ] 3. Enter the current time, then press OK (time will appear in hh:mm ). 4. Select am or pm and press OK . Selecting a time format 1. P ress Menu 4- 1-2 ( Settings - Ti me setting s - Clock ), and press Select (or wait 3 seconds) . 2. Scroll to Time for mat , and press the roller .
[ 55 ] Customize your phone • Disable/enable the active slide Y ou can disable the active slide f eature in the event you don ’t wish to answer or end calls u sing the slide. 1. P ress Menu 4- 3-6 ( Settings - Ph one se ttings - Slid e set tin g ).
[ 56 ] 13. Security settings • K eypad lock (K eyguard) With keypad loc k (keyguard ) you can tempo rarily lock your ph one’s keypad to prevent the keys from be ing accidentally pressed (for ex ample, when the phone is in your pocket or in your purse).
[ 57 ] Security settings Activating and deactivating phone lock Press Menu 4- 4-2-1 ( Settings - S ecurity setti ngs - Access c odes - Phone l ock ). Enter the lock code then press OK . T hen scroll to On or Off , and press OK . Complete the phone lock activation or deactiva tion by turning your phone off and back on.
[ 58 ] • Acces s codes These codes may only include the characters 0 t o 9. The phone prompts you to enter the cu rrent code and the ne w code. It also prompts you t o verify the new code. Note: Avoid using access codes similar to the emergency numbers, such as 9 1 1, to pr event accidental dialling of the em ergency number .
[ 59 ] Security settings Lock code Y ou’ll need the lock code to act ivate and deactivate Phone Lock, or to change your lock code. The def ault lock code is 1234 . If you en ter an incorrect lock code f ive times in a r ow , your p hone will pr ompt you for the security code (see page 58).
[ 60 ] Once you have accessed Add restric tion and have added at least one restriction, the following option s will be added to the menu for that option: • Edit allows you to edit an existin g outgoing call restriction. • Erase will erase any existing outgoing c all restrictions.
[ 6 1 ] Security settings Selecting call restrictions 1. P ress Menu 4- 4-1 ( Settings - Secur ity setting s - Call restri ctions ). 2. Scroll to Restri ct outg oing cal ls or Re strict incoming calls and press Select . 3. Enter the security code and press OK .
[ 62 ] 14. T ext messages Using the Messag es menu (Menu 1) and Sh ort Message Service (SMS), you can read, write and send text messages to another phone or to an e-mail address (if supported by you r network). Note: Text messaging is a network-depend ent feature.
[ 63 ] Text messages •T h e Use number option captures a phone number that appears in t he text message (or from the phone sending the SMS message) and provides you with options to Save the number to your phone book, Add to name (add to existing phone book entry), Se nd message (to the n umber ) or Cal l .
[ 64 ] Erasing messages in th e message folder s 1. At the Start screen , press Menu 1-5 ( Mes sag es - Erase messages ). 2. Highlight the folder whose contents you wish erased and press OK . 3. Enter your security code and press OK to complete the erase process.
[ 65 ] Text messages 2. If the displayed w ord is correct, press to ge t a space, then start writing the next word. If the displayed wor d is not correct, pr ess to view other word options. T o re turn to the pr e vious match, press Previo us . T IP : T o view the list of matches, press Options, scroll t o Ne xt match, then press the roller .
[ 66 ] Adding a new w ord to th e dict ionary Y ou will be prompted to add a new word to the dictionary (via traditional text input) if you t r y to write a w ord that does not already exist. 1. P ress Spell . Note: Y ou can also acce ss the traditional text input screen by pressing Opti ons , then selecting Edit word .
[ 67 ] Text messages • Writin g and sendin g text mess ages Y ou can us e the Messages menu to create and send text messages to another mobile phone, or to an e -mail addr e ss. Y ou can also save a dr aft of your message in the Ar chi ves folder for later use.

[ 72 ] Day list Press Me nu , scroll to Calendar , and press the roller to access the day list. Use the Day list to scroll through your cale ndar day by day . For each day , the day list shows the date and the icon for each type of appoi ntment you have s et for the day .

[ 75 ] Y our personal assistant • Alarm clock The Alarm cl ock function of your phone’s clock (Menu 4-1-1) can be set to soun d an ala rm at a ti me you sp eci fy . The alarm clock u ses the time format set for the phone clock (12-hour or 24-hour format).
[ 76 ] •C a l c u l a t o r Y ou can use your p hone’s calculator to add, subtract, multiply or divide numbers a nd convert curr encies. R EMEMBER ! Do not switch on the phone when wire less phone use is prohibited or when it may cause interference or danger .
[ 77 ] Y our personal assistant 3. Scroll to How many foreign units to a home unit or How many home units to a foreign unit (depending on how you wish to convert the currency), a nd press Se l ect . 4. Enter the appropriate exchange rate and press OK (use the key for decimals).
[ 78 ] 16. Infrared connections Use the Infrare d menu (Menu 1 1) to activate communicat ions betwee n your ph one and other devices throug h its infrared (IR ) port. T o connect via IR, the device with which you want to connect must be IrDA compliant.
[ 79 ] Infrared connections Checking the status of an IR connection The status of an IR connection is indicated by . • When is shown continuously , the re is an IR connection between your phone and the oth er device. • When is not shown, no IR connect ion exists .
[ 80 ] Sending a business card t o another p hone or other dev ice Note: Make sure that the other phone or device is set to receive data via its IR port. Please refer to th e user guide for the receiving device for more in formation on e nabling IR com munications an d receivin g data o ver IR.
[ 8 1 ] DLR-3P co nnections 17. DLR-3P connections Y ou can e stablish a 2-way connection between you r PC or laptop c omputer and your phone via t h e DLR-3P serial cable. With th is type of con nection, your phone can: • function as an external modem connected via the DLR-3P .
[ 82 ] 18. W AP services Note: This menu may not be visible if WAP services are unavailable in your area. WAP ( sh ort for Wireless Application Protocol) is to mobile devices what WWW (world wide web) is to computers. Th e mobile community began developing WAP in 1997 to give mobile device users acce ss to the inte rnet.
[ 83 ] WAP services • About your service provider Because the WAP content is s pecifically designed to be viewed from your mobile phone, your wireless service provider now a lso becomes your "wireless Internet ser vice provider .
[ 84 ] Because your service provider (as well as WAP services providers around the world) are free to employ a variety of programming techniques, each "card" viewed could contain a variety of elements.
[ 85 ] WAP services 1. Highlight the data entry field and press the roller . 2. Enter the text requested by th e data entry field (example: Miami ) and press OK . Note: The text you en tered on the previous screen is displayed between the brackets. 3.

[ 88 ] Othe r optio ns The Bookmarks options menu pr ovides you with several options for using or manipulatin g existin g bookmarks. From this menu , the follow ing options are available: • Add a bookma rk - used to add a bookmark m anually (while off-line or while browsing).
[ 89 ] Games 19. Games Not only can you use you r phone for communication but also for some serious fun. Y ou r phone offers you four gam es from which to choose. •I n Snake II , you are to feed the snake wi th as many goodies as possible. The longer the s nake’s tail grows, the higher you r score.

Network settings The System and Setting s menu are used to change a n umber of settin gs related to how the phone sea rches for service, and to modify th e phone’s functions and security settings. • Network selection Use the Sy st em men u ( Menu 5 ) to change how your phone searches for service.
[ 9 1 ] Network settings Network feature setting This menu allows you to enable or disable various network services (Call Forwarding, Call W a iting, Send Own Caller ID) through the use of special feature codes pr ovided to you by you r service provider .
