GETTING STARTED 3 En INTRODUCTION Check that you recei ved all of the follo wing parts. 1 T ake off the battery compar tment cover . 2 Insert the two supplied batteries (AA, R6, UM-3) accord ing to the polarity markings (+ and –) on the insi de of the battery compar tment.
CONTROLS AND FUNCTIONS 4 En 1 MASTER ON/OFF T urns on or of f this unit (see page 28). 2 MAIN ZONE ON/OFF T urns on the main zone or sets it to the standby mode (see page 28). • In the standby mode, this unit cons umes a small amount of power in order to recei ve infr ared signals from the remote control.

CONTROLS AND FUNCTIONS 7 En INTRODUCTION 0 TRANSMIT indicato r Flashes while the remote control is sending infrared signals. A ST ANDBY Sets this unit to the st andby mode (see page 28). This button is operational onl y when MASTER ON/OFF on the front panel is pressed inward to the ON po sition.
CONTROLS AND FUNCTIONS 8 En ■ Controlling the TUNER (FM/AM and D AB) functions Set the component selector sw itch to SOURCE and then press TUNER to select “T UNER” as the input source . Press B AND repeatedly to switch the reception band between FM, AM and D AB.

CONNECTIONS 12 En The speaker layout belo w sho ws the standard ITU-R * speaker setting. Y ou can use it to enjoy CINEMA DSP and multi-channel audio sources. * ITU-R is the radio communication sector of the ITU (International T elecommunication Union).
13 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION Be sure to connec t the left cha nnel (L), right ch annel (R), “+” (red) and “–” ( black) properly . If the connections are f aulty , no sound will be heard from th e speakers, and if the polarity of the speake r connections is incorrect, the sound will be unnatural and lack bass.
14 En CONNECTIONS FRONT terminals Connect one or two sets of fr ont speak ers (1, 2) to th ese terminals. If you use only one front speaker system, connect it to the FR ONT A or B terminal. CENTER terminals Connect a center speaker (3) to these terminals.
15 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION ■ A udio jac ks This unit has three types of audio jacks. Connection depends on the av ailability of audio jacks on your other components. A UDIO jacks For con ventional analo g audio signals transmitted via left and right analog audio cables .
16 En CONNECTIONS ■ Audio signal flow for A U DIO OUT ( REC) This unit handles digital and analog signa ls independently . Thus, audio signals in put at the analog jacks are output only at th e analog A UDIO OUT (REC) jacks.
17 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION Connect your TV to the VIDEO MONITOR OUT jack, the S VIDEO MONITOR OUT jack or the COMPONENT VIDEO MONITOR OUT jacks of this unit. Do not connect this u nit or other components to the A C power suppl y until al l connections between componen ts are com plete.
18 En CONNECTIONS Connect your D VD player , DVD recor der , VCR or STB (set-top box) using the same type of video c onnections as those made for your TV (see page 17).

20 En CONNECTIONS Connect your CD player , MD player or tape deck via analog and/or digital connections. Do not connect this unit or othe r components to the A C power supply until all connections between components are complete .
21 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION This unit is equipped with the DOCK terminal on the rear panel that allows you to connect a Y AMAHA iPod uni versal dock (such as YDS-10 sold separately) where you can sta tion your iPod and control playback of your iPod using the supplied remote control.
22 En CONNECTIONS T o connect this unit to your network, pl ug one end of a network cable (CA T -5 or higher straight cable) into the LAN port of this unit, and plug the other end into one of the LAN ports on your router that supports the DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server function.
23 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION This unit is equipped with 6 additional input jacks (FR ONT L/R, CENTER, SURR OUND L/R and SUBWOOFER) for discrete mu lti-channel input from a multi-format player , e xternal decoder or sound processor .
24 En CONNECTIONS Both FM and AM indoor ante nnas are supplied with this unit. In general, these ante nnas should pr ovide suf ficient signal strength. Connect ea ch antenna correctly to the designated terminals. • The AM loop antenna should be placed away from this unit.
25 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION Connect the supplied indoor D AB antenna to the D AB antenna terminal on the rear panel and attach the indoor D AB antenna vertically on the wall. y It is recommended that you use the tunin g aid function (see page 66) when you se t up the indo or DAB antenna in order to maximize DAB reception capability .
26 En CONNECTIONS Once all connections are co mplete, plug the power cabl e into the A C wall outlet. ■ A C OUTLET (SWITCHED) Use this outlet to supply po wer to any connected components. Connect the po wer cable o f another component to this out let.
27 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION If you are to use 6 ohm speakers, set “SP IMP .” to “6 Ω MIN” as follo ws BEFORE using this unit. 4 ohm speakers can be also used as the fr ont speakers. 1 Make sure this uni t is turned off. See page 28 for details about turning on or off this unit.
28 En CONNECTIONS When all connections are complete, turn on this un it. ■ T urning on this unit Press MASTER ON/OFF on the fr ont panel inward to the ON position to tu rn on this unit. • Press MAIN ZONE ON/OFF on the front panel (or ST ANDBY on the remote control) to set the main zone to the standb y mode.
BASIC SETUP 29 En PREP ARA TION The “B ASIC SETUP” feature is a useful way to set up your system quickly and with minimal effort. • Make sure you disconnect your headp hones from this unit. • If you wish to configur e this unit manually using more pr ecise adjustments, use the detaile d parameters in “SOUND MENU” (see page 82).
30 En BASIC SETUP 6 Press d to select “SUBWOOFER” and then j / i to select the desired setting. Choices: YES , NONE • Select “YES” if you hav e a subwoofer in your system. • Select “NONE” if you do not hav e a subwoofer in your system.
31 En BASIC SETUP PREP ARA TION 10 Press j / i to select the desired setting. Choices: YES , NO • Select “YES” to complete the setup procedure if the test tone le v els from each speaker were satisfactory . • Select “NO” to proc eed to the speak er le vel adjustment menu in step 12 to balance the output lev el of each speaker .
PLAYBACK 32 En Extreme caution should be exer cised when y ou play bac k CDs encoded in DTS. If y ou pla y bac k a CD encoded in DTS on a DTS-in compatible CD player , you will onl y hear some unwanted noise that ma y damage your speakers. Check whether your CD pla y er supports CDs encoded in DTS.
33 En PLAYBACK BAS I C OPERA TION 5 Rotate V OLUME on the front panel (or press V OLUME +/– on the remote control) to adjust the v olume to the de sired output level. 6 Press T ONE CONTROL on the front panel repeatedly to select “TREBLE” or “B ASS” and then r otate the PROGRAM selector to adjust the corresponding frequency response level.
USING AUDIO FEATURES 34 En SILENT CINEMA allows you to enjo y multi-channel music or movie sound, includ ing Dolby Digital and DTS sources, through ordinary headphones.
35 En USING AUDIO FEATURES BAS I C OPERA TION y “NIGHT :CINEMA” and “NIGHT :MUSIC” adjustments are stored independently . • Y ou cannot use the night liste ning modes in the following cases: – when the “DIRECT STEREO” mode (see page 39) is selected.
36 En USING AUDIO FEATURES 3 Press SLEEP on the remote control repeatedly to set the amount of time. Each time you press SLEEP, the front panel display changes as shown belo w . The SLEEP indicator flashe s while you are switchi ng the amount of time for the sleep timer .
37 En USING AUDIO FEATURES BAS I C OPERA TION 2 Press j / i on the remote control to adjust the speaker output level. • Press i to increase the value. • Press j to decr ease the v alue. Control range: –10 dB to +10 dB y This operation can also be performed using the control b uttons on the front panel.
38 En USING AUDIO FEATURES 1 Set the component selector switch to AMP and then press ENHANCER on the remote control repeatedl y to select the desired Compressed Music Enhancer mode. The following display appear s in the OSD and the ENHANCER indicator lights up in the front panel display .
39 En USING AUDIO FEATURES BAS I C OPERA TION Y ou can mix do wn multi-cha nnel sources to 2 channels and enjoy playback in 2-channel stereo. Set the component selector switc h to AMP and then press STEREO on the remote contr ol repeatedly to select “2ch Stereo”.
USING VIDEO FEATURES 40 En Y ou can display the format, samp ling frequenc y , channel, bit rate and flag data of the current input signal. 1 Set the component selector switch to AMP and then press SET MENU on the remote contr ol. The top “SET MENU” displa y appears in t he OSD.
41 En USING VIDEO FEATURES BAS I C OPERA TION Y ou can display the operating in formation of this unit on a video monitor . If you display the “SET MENU” and sound field pro gram parameter settings on a video monitor , it is much easier to see the available options and parameters than it is to read the inform ation in the front panel display .
ENJOYING SURROUND SOUND 42 En If you connected a surround back speaker , use this feature to enjoy 6.1-channel playback for multi-channel sources using the Dolby Pro Logic IIx, Dolby Digital EX or DTS-ES decoders. 1 Set the component selector switch to AMP and then press EXTD SUR.
43 En ENJOYING SURROUND SOUND BAS I C OPERA TION Signals input from 2-channel sources can also be played back on multi-channels. 1 Set the compon ent selector switch to AMP and then press ST ANDARD on the remote control repeatedl y to switch between the “SUR.
44 En ENJOYING SURROUND SOUND V irtual CINEMA DSP allows you to enjoy the CINEMA DSP programs without surround speak ers. It creates virtual speakers to reproduc e the natural sound fi eld.
RECORDING 45 En BAS I C OPERA TION Recording adjustments and other operati ons are performed fr om the recordi ng components. Refer to the operating instructions for those components. The DTS signal is a digital bitstrea m. Attempting to digi tally record the DTS bitstream will result in noise being rec orded.
FM/AM TUNING 46 En There are 2 tuning methods: automatic a nd manual. Automatic tuning is ef fecti ve when st ation signals are strong and there is no interference.
47 En FM/AM TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION If the signal recei ved from the station you w ant to select is weak, tune into it manually . Manually tuning into an FM st ation automa tically switches the tuner to monaural reception to increase the signal quality .
48 En FM/AM TUNING Y ou can use t he automati c pres et tuning feature to store FM stations with strong signals up to 40 (A1 to E8: 8 preset station numbers in ea ch of the 5 preset station groups) of those stations in order . Y ou can then recall any preset statio n easily by sele cting the preset station number .
49 En FM/AM TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION ■ A utomatic preset tu ning options Y ou can specify the preset number from which this unit stores FM stations and/or be gins tuning to ward lo wer frequencies. First carry out steps 1 through 3 in “ Automatic preset tuning” on page 48.
50 En FM/AM TUNING 4 Press PRESET/TUNING l / h to select a preset station number (1 to 8) while the MEMOR Y indicato r is flashing. • Press h to select a higher preset station number . • Press l to select a lower preset station numb er . 5 Press MEMOR Y (MAN’L/A UT O FM) while the MEMOR Y indicato r is flashing.
51 En FM/AM TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION 2 Press PRESET/TUNING l / h on the fr ont panel (or PRESET/CH u / d on the remote control) to select the desired preset station number (1 to 8). The preset station group a nd number appear in the front panel display along w ith the station band and frequency .
52 En FM/AM TUNING 3 Select preset station “A5” using A/B/C/D/E and PRESET/TUNING l / h . “A5” and the MEMOR Y indi cator flash i n the front panel display . See “Selecti ng preset stations” on page 50. 4 Press EDIT again. “EDIT E1–A5” appears in the front panel display and the assignments of the two preset stations are exchanged.
RADIO DATA SYSTEM TUNING 53 En BAS I C OPERA TION Radio Data System (Europe mode l only) is a data tran smission system used by FM stati ons in man y countries.
54 En RADIO DATA SYSTEM TUNING 4 Press PTY SEEK ST ART on the remote control to start searching f or all the av ailable Radio Data System pr eset stations. The name of th e selecte d program type flashes and the PTY HOLD indicator lights up in the front panel display while this unit is searching for stations.
55 En RADIO DATA SYSTEM TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION 3 Press EON on the remote control repeatedly to select one of the 4 Radio Data System prog ram types (NEWS, AFF AIRS, INFO or SPORT). The name of the selected program type appears in the front panel display .
56 En RADIO DATA SYSTEM TUNING 2 Press FREQ/TEXT on the remote c ontrol repeatedly to select the desired Radio Data System display mode. • Select “PS” to dis play th e name of the Radio Data System program currently being recei v ed. • Select “PT Y” to displa y th e type of the Radio Data System program currently being recei v ed.
DAB (DIGITAL AUDIO BROADCASTING) TUNING 57 En BAS I C OPERA TION D AB (Digital Audio Broadc asting), also kno wn as digital radio, is a ne w wa y of radio broadcasting. D AB is broadcast using digital signals instead of analog signals, resulting in near CD-qua lity sound.
58 En DAB (DIGITAL AUDIO BRO ADCASTING) TUNING Before tuning into D AB serv ices, you must perform the initial scan. 1 Rotate the INPU T selector on the fro nt panel (or set the component selector switch to SOURCE, and then press TUNER on the remote control) to select “TUNER” as the input source.
59 En DAB (DIGITAL AUDIO BROADCASTING) TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION There are fi ve D AB tuning methods: “ALPHANUMERIC”, “A CTIVE”, “ENSEMBLE”, “F A VOURITE”, and “PRESET”. Y ou can select the desired services wit h the cha nnel labels displayed in the front panel display .

62 En DAB (DIGITAL AUDIO BRO ADCASTING) TUNING Y ou can tune into an y desi red D AB servic e simply by entering the corresponding pr eset service number under which it was stored. 1 Select “D AB” as the reception band and the n select “PRESET” as th e D AB tuning method.

64 En DAB (DIGITAL AUDIO BRO ADCASTING) TUNING There are 5 operations in D AB MENU: “INIT SCAN”, “TUNE AID”, “DRC MODE”, “PR UNE LIST”, and “PRESET DEL”.
65 En DAB (DIGITAL AUDIO BROADCASTING) TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION ■ Initial scan A)INIT SCAN Use this feature to locate all of the D AB ensembl es and services in your area.
66 En DAB (DIGITAL AUDIO BRO ADCASTING) TUNING If the initial scan operation was not successful, “Not A vailable” appears in the front panel display . In such cases, press A/B/C/D/E on the front panel (or u / d on the remote control) to start “INI T SCAN” automatically .
67 En DAB (DIGITAL AUDIO BROADCASTING) TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION ■ DRC mode C)DRC MODE Some D AB broadcasters tran smit a wide dynamic range enabling high quality sound, accompanied by DRC (Dynamic Range Control) data. Use this feature to compress the dynamic range of the D AB broadcast.
68 En DAB (DIGITAL AUDIO BRO ADCASTING) TUNING ■ Prune list D)PRUNE LIST Use this feature to delete a group o f inactiv e D AB ensembles and servic es from the DAB re gistry list. 1 Press u / d to select “PR UNE LIST” in “D AB MENU”, and then press ENTER.
69 En DAB (DIGITAL AUDIO BROADCASTING) TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION 4 Press ENTER to delete the selected preset D AB service fr om the D AB registry list. Once this operation is has been complet ed, “DELETE OK” appears in the front panel display , and then this unit returns to the “PRESET DEL” menu.
SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS 70 En What really crea tes the rich, full tones of a live instrument are the multiple reflections from the walls o f the room. In addition to making the sound liv e, these reflec tions enable us to tell where the player is situated as we ll as the size and shape of the room in which we are sitting.
71 En SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS This unit is equipped with a variety of precise digital de coders that allo w you to enjoy multi-channel playback from almost any stereo or multi-channel sound source.
72 En SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS ■ For music source s Y ou can select from the following sound f i elds when playing music sources, like CD, FM/AM broadcasting, tapes, etc.
73 En SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS Y ou can enjoy good quality sound with the initial f actory settings. Although you do not ha v e to change the initial factory settings, you can change some of the parameters to better suit the input source or your listening room.
74 En SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS ■ Sound field parame ter descriptions Y ou can adjust the v alues of certain digi tal sound f ield parameters so that the sound f ields are recreated accurately in your listening room. Not all of the follo wing parameters are found in e v ery program.
75 En SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS ROOM SIZE P.ROOM SIZE S.ROOM SIZE SB ROOM SIZE Room size. Presence, su rround, and su rround back room sizes. Adjusts the apparent size of the surround sound f ield. The lar ger the v alue, the larger the su rround sound f ield becomes.
76 En SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS REV.TIME Re verberation time. Adjusts the amount of time taken for the dense, subsequent re verberation sound to decay by 60 dB at 1 kHz. This chan ges the apparent size of the acoustic environment over an e xtremely wide range.
77 En SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS REV.LEVEL Re verberation le vel. Adjusts the volume of the rev erberation so und. The larger the v alue, the stronger the rev erberation becomes. Control range: 0 to 100% 2ch Stereo DIRECT 2-channel stereo direct.
78 En SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS y The “PR O LOGIC IIx Music”, “PRO LOGIC II Music”, and “DTS Neo:6 Mu sic” parameters can be set o nly when “SUR. ST AND ARD” is selected. Set the component selector swit ch to AM P and then press ST ANDARD on the remote control repeatedly to select “SUR.
SET MENU 79 En AD V AN CED OPERA TION Y ou can use the following para meters in “SET MENU” to a djust a variety of system settings and customize th e way this unit operates. Change the initial settings (indicated in bold under each parameter) to reflect the needs of your listenin g en vironment.
80 En SET MENU D AB menu 3 DAB MENU Use this menu to manually perform the DAB opera tions. For details, see “Using D AB MENU” on page 64. Network and USB menu 4 NET/USB MENU Use this menu to manually adj ust the network and USB system parameters. Option menu 5 OPTION MENU Use this menu to manually adjus t the optional system parameters.
81 En SET MENU AD V AN CED OPERA TION Use the remote control to acce ss and adjust each parameter . y • Y ou can change the “SET MENU” parameters while this unit is reproducing sound. • If you press one of the so und field program selector b uttons during the “SET MENU” operation, the “SET MEN U” operation is canceled.
82 En SET MENU 5 Press u / d repeatedly and then press ENTER to select and enter the desired submenu. The following display is an example where “SPEAKER LEVEL” is selected. 6 Press u / d to select the desired parameter and then j / i to change the parameter settings.

84 En SET MENU Crosso ver CROSSOVER Use this feature to select a crossov er frequency of all the speakers set to “SML” (or “SMALL”) or to “NONE” in “SPEAKER SET” (see pages 82 and 83).
85 En SET MENU AD V AN CED OPERA TION ■ Speaker dista nce C)SP DISTANCE Use this feature to manually adj ust the distance of each speaker and the delay applied to the respective channel. Ideally , each speaker should be the same di stance from the main listening position.
86 En SET MENU ■ Dynamic range F)DYNAMIC RANGE Use this feat ure to select the amount of dynamic range compression to be applied to your speakers or headphones. This sett ing is ef fecti ve only when this unit is decoding Dolby Digital and DTS signals.
87 En SET MENU AD V AN CED OPERA TION Use this menu to reassign the i nput/output jacks, select the input mode or rename the input source. ■ Input/output assignme nt A)I/O ASSIGNMENT Use this feature to assign th e input/output jacks according to the component to be used if the initial settings of this unit do not correspond to your needs.
88 En SET MENU ■ Input mode B)INPUT MODE Use this feature to set this unit to reset “I NPUT MODE” back to “A UTO” (see page 35) regardless of the previous setting or to recall the last input mode (“A UT O”, “DTS”, or “AN ALOG”) used for that source whene ver you turn on this unit.
