22 2 Preparations Pr eparing the Power Supply Y ou can power the camcorder using a battery pack or dir ectly using the compact power a dapter . If you connect the compact power adapter to the camcor der while a battery pack is attached, th e camcorder will draw power from the power outlet.

Date, Time and Language Settings 26 Date, Time and Language Settings Setting the Date and Time Y ou will need to set the date and time of the camcor der befor e you can start using i t. When the camcor der’ s clock is not set, the [Date/Time] scr een will appear automaticall y with the month selected.

Using the Menus 28 Using the Menus In mode, many of the cam corder ’ s functions can be adjusted fr om the menu for general settings, which opens after pressing the MENU button. In mode, pr ess the MENU button to open the menu for general settings or SET to open the cl ip me nu for clip operations.

31 Preparing the Camcorde r Using the LCD Panel Open the LCD panel 90 degr ees. • Y ou can r otate the panel 90 degr ees downwar d or 180 deg rees towar d the lens. NOTES • By default, the viewfinder scr een is turned off while you use the LCD screen.

35 Preparing Re cording Media Pr eparing Record ing Media The camcor der recor ds clips to CompactFlash (CF) car ds and photos* to SD and SDHC memory cards. The cam corder is equipped with two CF car d slots. Initialize r ecordin g media ( 0 37) when you us e them with this camcorder for the first time.

Recordin g Video 42 Recording in Full Au to Mode Move the CAMERA switch to FU LL AU TO to change the camco rder to full auto mode. In full auto m ode, the camcor der automatically sets the iris, gain, sh utter speed, and white balance. The camcord er will continuously adjust the brightness an d white balance automatically*.
43 Recording V ideo Onsc reen Displa ys Refer to this section for an explanat ion of the vari ous screen display s that appear in mode. Y ou can use the custom display function ( 0 108) to displ ay or hide most of the scr e en displays. Such screen displ ays are denoted with an asterisk (*).

Video Configuration: Bit Rate, Resoluti on and Frame Rate 46 Video Configuration: Bit Rate, Resolution and Frame Rate Before you r ecor d, select the bit rate, r esolution (frame size) a nd frame rate that best match your cr eative needs. 1 Open the [Bit Rate/Resolution] submenu to set the bit rate and res ol uti on .
47 Custom Button and Dial Custom Button and Dial Y ou can assign to the CUSTOM button and dial o ne of several fr equently used functions. Y ou can then adjust the selected function using the CUSTOM button and dial, without having to access the menu.
Adjusting the Focus 48 Adjusting the Focus This camcor der features the follo wing two meth ods for adjusting th e focus. Manual focus (MF): Use the manual ring to adjust th e focus. Y ou can use the peaki ng and magnification functions to hel p you focus more ac curately .
49 Adjusting the Focus NOTES • Using the subject dista nce display on th e scr een: - When the camcorder switches out of autofocus mode o r when you adjust the focus with the manual ring, the appro ximate subject distance is displayed on the scre en for approximately 3 seconds.

51 Adjusting the Focus Options NOTES • When recording in bright surroundings, the cam corder closes down the apertur e. This may cause the picture to appear blurr ed and is mo r e noticeable towar d the wide -angle end of the zoom rang e. In such c ase, set the [ l Camera Setup] [ND Filter] setting ( 0 145) to [Automatic].
Adjusting the Focus 52 Options NOTES • The camcorder may mistakenly detect the faces of non- human subjects. In such ca se, turn face detection off. • In certain cases, faces may not be detect ed correc tly . T ypical examples include: - Faces extrem ely small, large, dar k or bright in r elation to the overall picture.
53 Image Stabilizer Image Stabilizer Use the image stabilizer to compensate fo r camcorder shake in or der to achieve steadier shots. Ther e are 3 me thods of ima ge stabilization; select the method that best suits your needs.
Gain 54 Gain The gain con trol adjusts t he level of th e video signal gener ated depending on the lighting a nd shooting conditions. Y ou can select auto matic or manual gain contr ol. Automa tic Gain Contr ol ( AGC) The camcor der automatically adjusts th e gain based on th e subject’ s brightness.
55 Gain Manual Gain Control Y ou can manually adjust the gai n of the 3 pr eset gain level s (L: low , M: middle, H: high). Each l evel can be set independently . Y ou can also fine-tun e the gain in 0.5 dB incr ements. Assign ing Ga in V alues Y ou can assign sepa rate gain values to the L, M and H preset levels.
Shutter Sp eed 56 Shutter Speed Set the shutter speed based on the reco rding conditions . For example, yo u may want to set slow er shutter speeds in darker envir onments. The cam cor der offers the follow ing 6 modes. Off: The c amcorde r uses a standard s hutter speed based on the frame rate.
57 Shutter Speed Changing the Shutter Speed Mode 1 Open the [Shutter] submenu. [ l Came ra Setup ] [Shutte r] 2 Select the desired mode and th en press SET . 3 Close the menu and then press the SHUTTER button. • If you selected [Automatic], the shutter speed mode is set to automatic and you do not need to perform the r est of the pr ocedure.
Adjusting the Aperture 58 Adjusting the Aper ture Y ou can af fect the brightness o f your r ecor dings or chan ge the depth of field by ad justing the aperture. Increase the aperture value (F8) so that obje cts that are close and far away will be in focus.
59 Adjusting the Aperture • When you set the aperture va lue manually , it is not retained if you ac tivate automatic aperture control (excluding full auto mode). T he aperture value set auto matically by the camco rder wi ll be retained wh en you switch back to manual aper ture contr ol.
White Balance 60 Whit e B al an ce The camcorder uses an electr onic white balance process to calibr ate the pict ure for accurate color display under differ ent lighting conditions. Ther e ar e 4 methods of setting the white balan ce. Auto white balance: The ca mcorder autom atically adjusts the white balan ce to the o ptimal level.
61 White Balance 3 Close the menu and then press the WB button. • Press the button r epeatedly until the icon of the desir ed setting appears in the lower left of the screen. Options Fine-tuning th e Preset White Balance Y ou can fine-tune the [Dayl ight] and [T ungsten] settings within a range of -9 to 9 .
White Balance 62 Custom Wh ite Balance Y ou can store tw o custom white balance settings in the camcor der for futu re us e. 1 P r ess the WB button to select the F A o r F B custom setting . •T h e F A or F B appears next to the col or temperature o n the screen.
63 Zooming Zooming Y ou can operate the zoom (up to 10x) us ing the zoom rocker on the side grip o r the one on the handl e. Y ou can also use the manual ring o r the zoom buttons on the wir eless controll er . Fo r zoom s with a gradual start and/or stop, use soft zoom c ontrol ( 0 66).
Zooming 64 Using t he Grip Zoom Rocker Use the functions in the [ l Camera Setup] [Zoom] submenus to set the zoom speed. When you se lect a constant zoom speed, set one of 16 constant speeds (1 is the slow est, 16 the fastest). With a variable zoom speed, press g ently for a slow zo om; pr ess harder for fa ster zooms.
65 Zooming Using the Ha ndle Zoom Roc ker Use the functions in the [ l Camera Setup] [Zoom] submenus to set the zoom speed. Move the zoom r ocker towar d Q to z oom out (wid e-angle) and toward P to zoom in (telephoto). Setting the Zoom Speed Refer to the following table for a ppr oximate zoom speeds of the entir e zoom range (end to end).

Onscreen Ma rkers and Ze bra Pa tterns 68 Onscr een Markers and Zebra Patterns Using onscr een markers allows you to make sure your su bject is corr ectly framed an d is within the appropriate safe area. The z ebra patterns help you identify ar eas that are overexpo sed.

Displaying Zebra Patterns This camcor der has a zebra pattern featur e that shows black and white diagonal stripes ov er areas that are overexposed.
Setting the Time Code 70 Setting the Time Code The camcor der can generate a time co de signal and embe d it in y our recor dings. Y ou can have the camcorder output the time code signal from the HD/SD SDI terminal ( b only) or GENLOCK/TC term inal ( b only; 0 75).
71 Setting the Time Code 4 Change the r est of the fields (minutes, seconds, frame) in the same w ay . • Press the CANCEL button to close the screen without setting the time code. 5 Select [Set] to close the screen. • If the running mode is set to [Free Run], the time code will star t running from the value set in steps 2 to 4.

b S ynchronizing with an External Device 74 b Synchronizing with an External Device Using genlock syn chr onization, you can synchronize this cam corder's video signal to that of an external video device. Similarly , using an external time code signal, you can synchronize this camcor der's time code to the external signal.

77 Record ing Audio Recor ding Audio The camcor der featur es two-channel linear PCM audio r ecord ing and playb ack with a sam pling frequency o f 48 kHz. Y ou can record audio using the built-in microphone , optional external micropho ne (XLR or MIC term inal) or line input (XLR terminal).
Recording Audio 78 Activating t he Microphone Attenuator If the audio level is too hig h and the sound sounds distorted when recording with the built-in microphone or a microphone connected to the MIC terminal, activate the microphone attenuator (12 dB for the built-in microp hone, 20 dB for an external micr ophone).

81 Record ing Audio Manual Audio Level Adjustment Y ou can set the audio l evel for each channel manually from - f to 18 dB . 1 Set the audio level switch of the desired channel to M . 2 T urn the corresponding audio level dial to adjust the audio level.
Using Metadata 82 Using Metadata The camcor der automatically adds m etadata to clips while they are being r ecor ded. Metadata consists of the user -defined user memo* and reco rdin g data, such as shutter speed, exposu re and f ocus settings. Y ou can use the supplied Canon XF Utility so ftware to check and search for specif ic metadata.

Video Scopes 84 Video Scopes The camcor der can display a simplified w aveform monitor . It can also display an edge monitor* to help you focus. The video scopes appear only on the LCD scr een. They do not appear in the view finder or on an external monito r .
