If your ISP gives you DNS server addresses, enter them in the DNS Server fields in the LAN Setup screen.
P-660R/H-D Series User’s Guide 65 Chapter 5 LAN Setup 5.2.1.1 Private IP Addresses Every machine on the Internet must ha ve a unique address. If your ne tworks are isolate d from the Internet, for example, only between your two branch of fice s, you can assign any IP addresses to the hosts without problems.
P-660R/H-D Series User’s Guide Chapter 5 LAN Setup 66 5.2.3 Multicast T raditionally , IP packets are transmitted in one of either two ways - Unicast (1 sender - 1 recipient) or Broadcast (1 sender - everybody on the network). Multicast delivers IP packets to a group of ho sts on the n etwork - not everybo dy and not just 1.

P-660R/H-D Series User’s Guide 99 Chapter 10 Firewalls 10.2.2 Application-level Firewalls Application-level firewalls restrict access by serv ing as proxies for e xternal servers. Since they use programs written for specific Internet servic es, such as HTTP, FTP and tel net, they can evaluate network packets for valid applicatio n-sp ecific data.
P-660R/H-D Series User’s Guide Chapter 10 Firewalls 100 • The LAN (Local Area Network) port attaches to a network of computers, which ne eds security from the outside world. These computer s will have access to Internet services such as e-mail, FTP , and the W orld W ide W e b.
P-660R/H-D Series User’s Guide 101 Chapter 10 Firewalls 10.4.2 T ypes of DoS Attacks There are four types of DoS attacks: 1 Those that exploit bugs in a TCP/IP implementation. 2 Those that exploit weaknesses in the TCP/IP specification. 3 Brute-force attacks that flood a network with useless data.

P-660R/H-D Series User’s Guide 113 Chapter 11 Firewall Configuration Note: If you configure firewall rules wit hout a good underst anding of how they work, you might inadvertently introduce securi ty risks to the f irewall and to the protected network.
P-660R/H-D Series User’s Guide Chapter 11 Firewall Configuration 1 14 4 Does a rule that allows Internet users acces s to resources on the LAN create a security vulnerability? For example, if FTP ports (TCP 20, 21) are al lowed from the Internet to the LAN, Internet users may be able to connect to computers with running FTP servers.
P-660R/H-D Series User’s Guide 115 Chapter 11 Firewall Configuration The default rule for W AN to LAN traffic bloc ks all incoming connections (W AN to LAN). If you wish to allow certain W A N users to have access to your LAN, you will need to create custom rules to allow it.

P-660R/H-D Series User’s Guide 351 Appendix F IP Subnetting Since the first octet of a class “A” IP address must contain a “0”, the first octet of a class “A” address can have a value of 0 to 127.
P-660R/H-D Series User’s Guide Appendix F IP S ubnetting 352 Since the mask is always a continuous number of ones begin ning from the left, fo llowed by a continuous number of zeros for the remainder of the 32 bit mask, you can simply specify the number of ones instead of writing the value of each octet.
P-660R/H-D Series User’s Guide 353 Appendix F IP Subnetting Note: In the following chart s, shaded/bolded last octet bit values indicate host ID bit s “borrowed” to form network ID bits. The number of “borrowed” host ID bits determin es the number of subnets you can have.
P-660R/H-D Series User’s Guide Appendix F IP S ubnetting 354 Example: Four Subnet s The above exampl e illustrated using a 25-bit subne t mask to divide a class “C” address space into two subnets.
