Chapter 13 VPN LTE6100 User’s Guide 94 13.3.3 IKE Phases There are two phases to every IKE (Internet Ke y E xchange) negotiation – ph ase 1 (Authentication) and phase 2 (K ey Exchange). A phase 1 exchange establishes an IKE SA and the second one uses that SA to negotiate S As for IPSec.
Chapter 13 VPN LTE6100 User’s Guide 95 • Main Mode ensures the highest level of security when the communicating parties are negotiating authentication (phase 1). It uses 6 messages in three round trips: S A negotiation, Diffie-Hellman exchange and an ex change of nonc es (a nonce is a random number).
Chapter 13 VPN LTE6100 User’s Guide 96 NA T is not normally compatible with ESP in transport mode either , but the L TE Device’ s NAT Traversal feature provides a way to handle this. NA T traver s al allows you to set up an IKE SA when there are NA T routers between the two IPSec routers.
