8 Mounting options Mounting to the stand T o mount the wireless rout er into its stand: 1. Locat e the mounting holes at the bottom of the wireless rout er . 2. Align and insert the stand ’ s mounting hooks to the wireless r outer ’ s mounting holes.
9 Mounting on the wall T o mount the wireless rout er on the wall: 1. Locat e the two holes on the stand and secure the stand to the wall with screws . 2. Locat e the mounting holes at the back of the wireless rout er . 3. Align and insert the stand ’ s mounting hooks to the wireless r outer ’ s mounting holes.
10 2 Cr eating your network P ositioning your r outer F or the best wireless signal transmission between the wir eless router and the network devices c onnec ted to it, ensur e that you: • Place the wir eless router in a centraliz ed area for a maximum wireless co verage for the network devic es.
11 What y ou need T o set up your network, you need one or two computers that meet the following sy stem requiremen ts: • E thernet RJ-45 (LAN) por t (10Base - T/100Base - T X) • IEEE 802.
12 Setting up your wireless r outer Wir ed connection IMPORT ANT! • Use wired connection in setting up your wir eless router to avoid possible setup pr oblems due to wireless uncertainty . • Before setting up y our ASUS wireless router , do the following: • If you are replacing an existing r outer , disc onnec t it from your network.
13 2. Using the bundled network cable, c onnec t your computer t o your wireless r outer ’ s LAN por t. IMPORT ANT! Ensure that the LAN LED is blinking. 3 Using another network cable, c onnec t your modem to y our wireless rout er ’ s W AN por t. 4.
14 NO TES: • F or details on connecting to a wireless network, refer to the WLAN adapter ’ s user manual. • T o set up the securit y settings for y our network , refer t o the section Setting up the wireless security settings in this user manual.
15 3. F rom the L ocal Area Network (LAN) Settings screen, untick Use a pr oxy ser ver for y our LAN. 4. Click OK when done. MA C OS 1. F rom y our Safari brow ser , click Safari > Pr eferenc es > Advanced > Change Settings... 2. F rom the Network screen, deselect FTP Pr oxy and W eb Pr oxy (HT TP).
16 3. T o obtain the IPv4 IP settings automatically , tick Obtain an IP address automatically . T o obtain the IPv6 IP settings automatically , tick Obtain an IPv6 address automatically . 4. Click OK when done. B. Set the T CP/IP settings to automatically obtain an IP address .
17 MA C OS 1. Click the Apple icon located on the top left of your screen. 2. Click System P ref erences > Network > Congure ... 3. F rom the T CP/IP tab , select Using DHCP in the Congur e IPv4 dropdown list. 4. Cllick Apply Now when done.
18 3 Conguring via the w eb GUI Logg ing into the web GUI Y our ASUS Wir eless Router comes with an intuitive w eb graphics user interface (GUI) that allows y ou to easily congure its various featur es through a web br owser such as Internet Explorer , Fir efox, Safari, or Google Chrome.
19 3. The wireless r outer ’ s web GUI launches. Use the w eb GUI to congure various wir eless settings. Using the Network Map Network Map allows you to view the sta tus and congure the connection settings of the Internet, system, and clients in your network.
20 2. The wireless r outer automatically detects if your ISP connection type is D ynamic IP , PPP oE, PPTP , L2TP , and Static IP . Key in the nec essar y information for y our ISP connection type. IMPORT ANT! Obtain the necessary information about your Internet connection type from your ISP .
21 NO TES: • The auto-detec tion of your ISP connection type takes place when you congur e the wireless router f or the rst time or when your wireless r outer is reset to its default settings .
22 S elect your next preferred task fr om any of these options: 1. G oing to Internet: Click to start sur ng the Internet or do Internet-relat ed ac tivities such as chat, or read/ write e -mail messages. 2. Advanced Setting page: Click to go to the wireless router’ s Advanced Setting page and congure mor e advanced wireless settings .
23 2. F ollow the onscreen instructions to complete the wir eless network setup . T o use WPS: 1. In the WPS eld, click the red button t o launch the WPS Wizar d. NO TE: Y ou may also press the WPS button on y our wireless router to launch the WPS W izard.
24 Setting up the wireless security settings T o protect your wireless network fr om unauthorized access, y ou need to congur e its securit y settings. T o set up the wireless security settings: 1. Key in 192.168.1.1 on your web br owser . 2. On the login screen, key in the default user name (admin) and password (admin), then click OK.
25 5GHz securit y settings 4. On the Wir eless name (SSID) eld, key in a unique name for y our wireless network. 5. F rom the Security Level dropdo wn list, select the encr yption method for y our wireless network. IMPORT ANT! The IEEE 802.11n standard pr ohibits using High Throughput with WEP or WP A- TKIP as the unicast cipher .
26 Creating multiple SSID pr oles The wireless r outer allows y ou to create multiple SSID pr ole on 2.4GHz that meet various working scenarios. T o create an SSID pr ole: 1. Under System sta tus, click Add . 2. Congur e the prole settings, then click A dd.
27 Managing your network clients T o manage your network clients: 1. Launch the wireless rout er ’ s web GUI. 2. On the Network Map screen, select the Client Status icon to display the inf ormation about your network clients. 3. In the Priority eld under the Client List, you can set the priority packet for each client as Normal, High, or Low .
28 Managing EZ QoS Bandwidth EzQoS Bandwidth Management allows you to set the bandwidth priority and manage the net work trac. T o set up the bandwidth priority : 1. Click EzQoS Bandwidth Management from the navigation menu at the left side of your screen.
29 Conguring the A dvanced settings Advanc ed Setting allows you to congur e the advanced fea tures of your wireless r outer . Setting up the DHCP Ser ver Y ou may enable the DHCP Ser ver function in your wireless router so y our network clients can automatically obtain IP addresses from y our wireless rout er .

31 T o upgrade the rmwar e: 1. Click Advanc ed Setting from the navigation menu at the left side of your screen. 2. Under the Administra tion menu, click F irmware Upgr ade. 3. In the New Firm ware F ile eld, click Bro wse to locate the new rmwar e on your computer .
32 Restoring/Saving/Uploading settings T o restor e/save/upload the settings: 1. Click Advanc ed Setting from the navigation menu at the left side of your screen.
33 4 Using the utilities NO TES: • Install the wireless router's utilities fr om the bundled suppor t CD . • If Autorun is disabled, run setup .
34 F irmwar e Restoration F irmware Restor ation is used on an ASUS Wir eless Router that failed during its rmware upg rading process . I t uploads the rmwar e that you specify . T he process takes about three t o four minutes. T olaunchtherescuemodeandusetheFirmware Restoration utility: 1.
35 NO TE: This is not a rmwar e upgrade utility and cannot be used on a working ASUS Wireless Router . Normal rmware upgrades must be done through the w eb inter face. Ref er to Chapter 3: Conguring via the w eb GUI for more details. 5. Specify a rmwar e le, then click Upload.

39 ASUS DDNS Ser vice RT -N53 supports the ASUS DDNS ser vice. When ex changing devices at the service center , if you have r egistered the ASUS DDNS ser vice and want to keep the original domain name , data transf er is a must. Visit y our local ser vice center for mor e information.
40 3. I have r egistered a domain name bef ore and it has been working well until my friends told me tha t they could not access m y domain name. Check the following: 1. The internet is working well. 2. The DNS ser ver is working well. 3. The last time you updated the domain name .
