8 Chapter 1: Introduction Overview Thank you for choosing the A LLNET A LL6600 iSCSI IP Storage Server. The ALLNET ALL6600 iSCSI is an easy-to-use st orage server that allows a dedicated approach to storing and distri buting data on a network.
9 Multiple RAID ALL6600 iSCSI supports multiple RAID volumes on o ne system. So, you can create RAID 0 for your non-critical data , and create RAID 5 for mission-critical data.
10 Front Panel The ALLNET ALL6600 iSCSI’s front panel ha s the device’s controls, indicators, and hard disk trays: Front Panel Item Description 1. DOM LED • Solid orange: system is being upgraded 2. WAN LED • Solid green: network link • Blinking green: network activity 3.
11 Hard Disk Trays Each of the ALL6600 iSCSI’s hard disk trays has a lock, a latch, and two LED indicators: Hard Disk Trays Item Description Lock • Use the lock to physically secure the hard disk .
12 Chapter 2: Hardware Inst allation Overview Your ALL6600 iSCSI is designed for easy inst allation. To help you get start ed, the following chapter will help you quickly get your ALL6600 iSCSI up and running. Please read it carefully t o prevent damaging you r unit during in stallation.
13 Cable Connections To connect the ALL6600 iSCS I to your network, fo llow the steps below: 1. Connect an Ethernet cable from your network to the WAN port on the back panel of the ALL6600 iSCSI. 2. Connect the provided p ower cord into the universal power socket on the back panel.
14 Checking System Status After making connections on the ALL6600 iSCSI and powering up, check whether the system status is no rmal or has trou ble by observing indicators on the front panel and hard disk trays. System Status Normal The system status is normal if: 1.
15 Chapter 3: First T ime Setup Overview Once the hardware is installed, ph ysically connected to your network , and powered on, you can configure the ALL6600 iS CSI so that it is accessible to your network users. There are two ways to set up your ALL660 0 iSCSI: using the ALLNET Setup Wizard or the LCD display .
16 5. Login with the admini strato r account and pass word. Username: admin Password: admin 6. Name your ALL6600 iSCSI and configure the network I P address. If your switch or router is configured as a DHCP Server, configuring the ALL6600 iSCSI to automatically obt ain an IP address is recommended.
17 8. Finished! Access the ALL6600 iSCSI Web Administrator Interface by pressing the Start Browser button. You can also configure another ALL6600 iSCSI at this point by clicking the Setup Other Device button. Press Exit to ex it the wizard. LCD Operation The ALL6600 iSCSI is equipped with an LC D on the front for easy status display and setup.

USB Copy The USB Copy function enables you to copy files stored on USB devices such as USB disks and digital cameras to the ALL 6600 iSCSI with a press of a button.

21 Chapter 4: System Management Overview The ALL6600 iSCSI provides an easily accessible Web Administration Int erface . With it, you can configure and monito r the ALL6600 iSCSI anywhere on the network. Web Administration Interface Make sure your network is connected to the Internet.

24 System Fan Speed Displays the current status of the system fan. Memory Size Shows the system memory capacity. Up Time Shows how long the system has been running. Service Status Item Description AFP Status The status of Apple Filing Protocol server.
25 Printer Status Item Description Manufacturer Displays the name of the USB printer manufacturer. Model Displays t he mode l of the USB p rinter. Status Displays the status of the USB printer. Printer Queue Click to remove all documents from printer queue If a corrupt print job is sent to a printer, printing may su ddenly fail.
26 Storage Management The Storage Menu displays the status of storage dev ices installed in th e ALL6600 iSCSI, and includes storage config uration options such as R AID and disk settings, folder configuration, and Nsync settings. Disks Information From the Storage menu, choose the Disks item and the Dis ks Information screen appears.
27 Reallocated Sector Count Count of reallocated sectors. When the hard drive finds a read/w rite/ver ificatio n erro r, it mark s this s ector a s "reallo cated " and transfers data to a special reserved area (spare area). This process is also known as remappi ng and "reallocated" sectors are called remaps.
28 RAID Configuration On the RAID List screen, press the RAID Config button to go to the RAID Configuration screen. In addition to RAID disk information an d status, this screen lets you make RAID configuration settings. For more information on RAID, see Appendix C: RAID Basics .
29 RAID Settings Using RAID Settings , you can select stri pe size, choose which disks are RAID disks or the Spare Disk, as well as enter a name for each di sk. RAID Settings Item Description RAID Check the boxes of the hard drives you wish to add to the storage volume.
30 With a RAID 1, 5, 6, or 10 volume, you can also add a spare disk after the RAID is created. See Chapter 7: Tips and Tricks > Adding a Spare Disk for details. Expanding a RAID To expand a RAID 1, 5, 6, or 10 volume, f ollow the st eps below: 1. Replace one of the hard drives in t he RAID volume and allow it to automatically rebuild.

33 Folder Management From the Storage menu, choose Folder , and the Folder screen appears. This screen allows you to create and configure folders on the ALL6600 iSCSI volume. Folder Item Description Folder name Displays the name of the folder. Description Provides a description of the folder.
34 Add Folder Item Description RAID ID RAID volu me where the new folder will reside. Folder Name Enter the name of the folder. Descrip tion Provid e a desc ription the f older. Browseable Enable or disable users from browsing the folder contents. If Yes is selected, then the share folder will be browseable.
35 NFS Share To allow NFS access to the share folder, enable the NFS Service , a nd then set up hosts with access rights. NFS Share Item Description Hostname Enter the name of the Host or IP address Privilege Host has either read only or writeable access to the folder.
36 3. Continue selectin g groups and user s and assigning them access levels using the column buttons. 4. To remove a group or user from a n access level column, press the Remove button in that column. 5. When you are finished, press Sub mit to submit and confirm your ACL settings.
37 Network Management Use the Netwo rk menu to make network configuration settings as well as service support settings. WAN Configuration From the Netwo rk menu, choose WAN , and the WAN Configuration scree n appears. This screen displays the network parameters of the WAN connection.
38 LAN Configuration The ALL6600 iSCSI supports two Gigabit Ethernet ports for higher service availability. To configure these ports, choose LAN from the Networ k menu, and the LAN Configuration screen appears. Press Appl y to save your changes. LAN Configuration Item Description MAC Address Displays the MAC address of the LAN interface.
39 Web Services Configuration From the Netwo rk menu, choose the Service item, and the Web Servi ce screen appears. This screen displays the service support parameters of the system. You can change any of these items and press Apply to confirm your settings.
40 NFS Setup From the Netwo rk menu, choose the NFS item, and the NFS Server Set ting screen appears. The ALL6600 iSCSI can act as an NFS server, enabling users to download and upload files w ith the favorite NFS clients. Press A pply to confirm your settings.
41 User and Group Management The ALL6600 iSCSI has bu ilt-in user dat abase that allows admin istrators to manage user access using differe nt group policies. From the Accounts menu, you can create, modify, and delete users, and assign them to groups that you designate.
42 Modifying Users 1. Select an existing user from the Local User Configuration screen. 2. Click on the Modify bu tton, and Local User Setting screen appears. 3. From here, you can enter a new password and re-enter to confirm, or use the << or >> buttons to have this user join or le ave a group.
43 Adding Groups 1. On the Local Group Configuration screen, click on the Add button. 2. The Local Group Setting screen appears. 3. Enter a Group Name , and select users to be in this group from the Users List by adding them to the Members List using the << b utton.
44 ADS/NT Configuration If you have a Windows Active Directory Server (ADS) or Windows NT server to handle th e domain security in your network, you can si mply enable the ADS/NT support feature; the ALL6600 iSCSI will con nect with th e ADS/NT server and get all the info rmation of the domain users and groups auto matically.
45 System Settings The System menu give s you a wealth of set tings that you ca n use to configure your ALL6600 iSCSI’s system administrati on functions. You can set up sys tem notifications, view s ystem logs, and even upgrade firmware from this menu.
46 System Logs Item Description Trunc ate All Log F ile Clear a ll log files . |<< < > >>| Use the forward ( > >>| ) and backward ( |<< < ) buttons to browse the log pages. INFO Provides all log information incl uding warning messages and error messages.
47 System Configuration Backup and Restore From the System menu, choose the Config Mgmt item and the System Configuration Download/Upload screen appears. From here, you can download or upload stored system configurations. See the following table for a detailed description of each item.
48 Upgrading System Firmware From the System menu, choose the Firmware Upgrade item and the Firmware Upgrade screen appears. Follow the steps below to upgrade your firmware: 1. Use the Browse button to find the firmware file . 2. Press Apply . 3. The beeper beeps and the Busy LED blinks unt il the upgrade is complete.
49 Reboot and Shutdown System From the System menu, choose Reboot & Shut down item, and the Shutdown/Reboot System screen appears. Press Reboot to restart the system or Shutdown to turn the system off.
50 Scheduled Power On/Off You may also designate a schedule for the ALL6600 iSCSI to turn on and of f. To do this, first enable the feature by checking the Enable Timer checkbox. Then, simply choose an on and off ti me for each day of the week that you would like to designate a schedule by using the various dropdowns.
51 Chapter 5: Additional Feature Setup Overview The ALL6600 iSCSI can also act as an FT P Server, allowing employees and clients to transfer files using thei r favorite FT P programs. The integrated Print Server allows you to share a single USB printe r with all users on the network.
52 Media Server With the built-in Media Server capability, the ALL6600 iSCSI provides media streaming service to stand-alone networked home media adapters that support the UPnP AV protocol or are Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) standard compliant.
53 Connecting DMAs to the Media Server Next, it’s time to con nect your Dig ital Media Adapter (DMA) to the m edia server: 1. Connect your DMA to your Medi a Server a. Configure your DMA to use a Dynami c IP address. The IP address will be assigned by the router.
54 Printer Server You can configure the ALL6600 iSCSI to act as a printer server. That way, all PCs connected to the network can utilize the same printer.
55 Windows Vista To set up the Printer Server in Win dows Vista, follow th e steps below: 1. Open Printer Folder from the Control Panel . 2. Click the right mouse b utton in anywhere on t he Printers folder and then select Add Printer . 3. Select Add a network, wireless o r Bluetooth printer .
56 4. Select The printer that I want isn’t listed . You can press Th e printer that I want isn’t listed to go into nex t page without waiti ng for Searching for available printers to fi nish.
57 6. Select or install a printer and then press OK . If your printer model is not list ed, please contact your print er manufacturer for help. 7. Windows will attempt t o connect to th e printer. 8. You can choose to set this printer as the defaul t printer by checking the Set as the default printer box.
58 9. Done! Click Finish ..
59 Chapter 6: Using the ALL6600 iSCSI Overview Once the ALL6600 iSCSI is setup and op erating, users on the network may manage all varieties of digital music, photos, or f iles by simply using their w eb browsers.
60 7. To upload a fil e from your computer to the c urrent folder, press the Ne w file (upload) button. When the scree n appears, press Browse and locate the file to upload. P ress OK and the file is uploaded t o the current folder. 8. To delete a file or folde r, select t he file or folder’ s check box.
61 4. When MAC OS X has co nnected to the ALL6600 iSCSI successfully, an icon representing the f older will appear on th e MAC OS X desktop. You can access the folder by double clickin g on the icon. Mapping the ALL6600 iSCSI as an iSCSI Drive With the ALL6600 iSCSI, you are able to ma p it as an iSCSI drive.
62 4. Leave the default selection s and click Next . 5. Read the license agreement. To continue with the installation, click I Agree and then click Next . 6. The iSCSI Init iator will now in stall automat ically. Click Finish once completed. 7. Start the iSCSI Init iator by double-click ing its icon on the desktop.
63 8. Select the Discovery tab. Under Target Po rtal s , click Add . 9. Enter the IP address of the ALL660 0 iSCSI. Click OK . 10. On the iSCSI Initiator Properties window, s elect the Targets tab. With the iSCSI target highlighted, click Log On . The Log On to Target dialogue will appear.
64 11. If you have not enabled CHAP, click OK to continue. If you have enable d CHAP, click Advanced . Under Advanced Settings, check the CHAP lo gin inf ormat ion checkbox and enter your username and password. Click OK . 12. Right click My Computer on the desktop and select Manage .
65 13. Click on Disk Management and you will see a new hard disk listed. 14. Initialize t he new hard disk and you will th en be able to use the iSCSI target as a local drive. Windows Vista Because Windows Vista has th e Microsoft iSCSI Initiator pre- installed, you will not have to install th is piece of software.
66 Adding an Nsync Task From the Nsync Inform atio n screen, click Add to display the Add Nsync Task screen. Add Nsync Task Item Description Task Name The name of your Nsync ta sk. Manufacturer Select whether the target is an ALLNET Product (e.g. ALL6600 iSCSI) or FTP server.

68 Windows XP Data Backup If you use Windows XP Prof essional, you can also use the Window s Backup Utility (Ntbackup.exe) to backup your files. If you use Windows XP Home Ed ition, follow th ese steps to install th e utility: 1. Insert the Windows XP CD into a drive and dou ble-click the CD icon in My Computer .
69 Chapter 7: T ip s and T ricks USB and eSATA Storage Expansion The ALL6600 iSCSI supports external USB har d disks through its three USB ports. Once a USB hard disk has successfully mounted, the ent ire volume will be copied automatically to the default USB HDD fold er.
70 Remote Administration You can set up your ALL6600 iSCS I for remote administrati on. With remote administration, you can access your ALL 6600 iSCSI over the Inter net, even if your ALL6600 iSCSI is behind a router. Thi s is especially useful i f you are traveling and suddenly need a f ile from your ALL6600 iSCSI.

72 2. Unscrew the damaged hard disk and remove it from the tray. 3. Slide a new hard disk into the tray and fasten the screws. 4. Insert the hard disk tray back into the ALL6600 iSCS I until it snaps into place. You can also lo ck it with a ke y if desired.
73 Chapter 8: T roubleshooting Forgot My Password If you forget your pass word, you can re set the unit to use the default password. To do this, press the reset bu tton on the fro nt panel after system i s booted, and ALL6600 iSCSI will be reset. LAN IP address will become 192.
74 Restoring Factory Defaults From the System menu, choose the Factory Default item and the R ese t to Factory De fault screen appears. Press A pply to reset the ALL6600 iSCSI to factory default setti ngs. Problems with Time and Date Settings The administrator is able to select an NTP Server to keep the ALL6600 iSCSI’s time synchronized.

78 Appendix C: RAID Basics Overview A Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) is a n array of several hard di sks that provide data security and high perf ormance. A RAI D system accesses several hard disks simultaneously, which improves I/O performance over a single h ard disk.
