GETTING STARTE D 4 ■ Installing batteries 1 Press the par t and slide the battery compartment cover off. 2 Insert four supplied batteries (AAA, R03) accordin g to the polarity markings on the inside o f the battery compartment. 3 Slide the cover bac k until it snaps into place .
CONTROLS AND FUNCTIONS 5 INTRODUCTION The XM Satellite Radio controls (SEARCH MODE, CA TEGOR Y, PRESET /TUNING/CH l / h , MEMOR Y and DISPLA Y) are only applicable to the U.S.A. model and are operational only when XM is sele cted as the input source. For details, see “Front panel functions” o n page 51 .
CONTROLS AND FUNCTIONS 6 7 FM/AM Switches the reception band (F M or AM) when TUNER is selected as the input source (see page 44). The frequency of the pre viously r ecei ved station is automatically recalled. 8 A/B/C/D/E Selects one of the 5 preset station groups (A to E) when TUNER is sele cted as the input source (see page 48).

14 CONNECTIONS 1 Remove appro x imately 10 mm (3/8 in) of insulation from each of the speaker cables. 2 T wist the exposed wires of the cable together to prevent short circuits. 3 Loosen the knob usin g the supplied speaker terminal wrench. 4 Insert one bare wire into the hole on the side of each term inal.

17 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION Some of the speakers commercially available these days hav e speaker wire connections that allo w bi-wiring or bi- amplification to enhance the performance of the speaker system. This unit allo ws you to make bi-wire and bi-AMP connections to one speaker sy stem.
18 CONNECTIONS Do not connect this unit or other components to the main power until all connections between components are complete. ■ Cable indication s ■ Analog jacks Y ou can input analog signals from audio components by connecting audio pin cables to the analog jacks on this unit.

21 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION This unit has the HDMI IN 1 and HDMI IN 2 jacks for digita l audio and video signal i nput as well as the HDMI OUT jack for digital audio and video signal out put. Connect the HDMI IN 1 or HDMI IN 2 jack of this unit to the HDMI OUT jack of other HDMI components (such as a D VD player).

27 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION Both AM and FM indoor antennas are include d with this unit. In general, these an tenn as should provide suf ficient signal strength. Connect each antenna corr ectly to the designated terminals. ■ Connecting the AM loop antenna 1 Set up the AM loop antenna .
28 CONNECTIONS ■ Connecting the A C power cab le Plug the supplied A C power cable into the A C inlet after all other connections are complete, then plug the A C po wer cable to an A C wa ll outlet. Use the supplied A C cable. Do not use other A C power cables as doing so may result in f ire hazard or electrical sh ock.

AUTO SETUP 30 This receiv er employs Y AMAHA Parametric Room Acoustic Optimize r (YP A O) technology which lets you av oid troublesome listening-based speak er setup and achiev es highly accu rate sound adjustments. The supplied optimizer microphone collects and analyzes the sound your speakers produce in y our actual listening en vironment.
31 AUTO SETUP PREP ARA TION For best results, make sure th e room is as quiet as possible during the A UTO SETUP procedure (YP A O). If there is too much ambient noise, the results ma y not be satisfactory . y • Y ou can run A UT O SETUP using the system menu that appe ars in the OSD or in the front panel display .
32 AUTO SETUP 4 Press k / n repeatedly to select WIRING, DIST ANCE, SIZE, EQ or LEVEL. 5 When WIRING, DIST ANCE, SIZE or LEVEL is selected, press l / h to select: CHECK T o automatically che ck and adjust the selected item. SKIP T o skip the sele cted item and perform no adjustments.
33 AUTO SETUP PREP ARA TION • If you change speakers, speaker positions, or the layout of your listening en vironment, run A UTO SETUP again to re-calibrate your system. • In the DIST ANCE results, the distance displayed may be longer than the actual di stanc e depending on the characteristics of your subwo ofer .
PLAYBACK 34 Extreme caution should be exercised when you play back CDs encoded in D TS. If you play back a CD encoded in DTS on a D TS-incompatible CD player , you will only he a r some unwanted noise that may damage your speakers. Check whether your CD player suppor ts CDs encoded in DTS.
35 PLAYBACK BAS I C OPERA TION 6 Rotate V OLUME on the front panel (or press V OLUME +/– on the remote control) to adjust the v olume to the de sired output level. 7 Rotate the PR OGRAM se lector on the front panel (or press one of the sound field prog ram button s on the remote contro l) to select the desired sound field program.
36 PLAYBACK ■ Adjusting the tonal quality Use this feat ure to adjust the balance of bass and treble for the front L/R and cent er speaker channels. 1 Press T ONE CONTROL on the fr ont panel repeatedly to select TREBLE or B ASS. 2 Rotate the PROGRAM sel ector to adjust the high-frequ ency respon se (TREBLE) or the low-frequency response (B ASS).
37 PLAYBACK BAS I C OPERA TION ■ Selecting the MUL TI CH INPUT Press MUL TI CH INPUT on the front panel or MUL TI CH IN on the remote control so that M UL TI CH INPUT appear s in the fr ont panel displa y and on the video monitor . When MUL TI CH INPUT is shown in the front panel display and the video monitor , no other source can be played.

39 PLAYBACK BAS I C OPERA TION ■ Using PURE DIRECT PURE DIRECT bypasses the decoders and DSP processors of this unit as well as shuts down the video circuitry , allowing you to enjoy the highest possible sound fidelity from analog and PCM sources. • T o av oid unexpected no ise, do not play DTS-encoded CDs in the PURE DIRECT mode.
40 PLAYBACK ■ Using th e sleep ti mer Use this feature to automa tically set this unit in th e standby mode after a certain amount of time. The sleep timer is useful when you are goi ng to sleep while this unit is playing or recording a s ource. The sleep timer also automatically turns of f an y external components connected to the A C OUTLETS.
41 PLAYBACK BAS I C OPERA TION 2 Press STRAIGHT (EFF ECT) on the fr ont panel or on the remote contr ol ag ain to turn the sound effect back on. 42 PLAYBACK y • W e recommend using A UTO in mos t cases. • Y ou can designate the default in put mode to be selected when the power of this unit is turne d on (see page 84).
RECORDING 43 BAS I C OPERA TION Recording adjustments a nd other operations are performed from the recording components. Refer to the operation instructions for those components. 1 T urn on th e power o f this unit and all connected components. See page 28 for details.
FM/AM TUNING 44 Automatic tuning is ef fectiv e when station signals are strong and there is no interference. 1 Rotate the INPU T selector on the fro nt panel (or set AMP/SOURCE/TV to SOURCE and then press TUNER on th e remote control) to select TUNER as the input source.
45 FM/AM TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION Manual tuning is effective when stations signa ls are weak . Manually tuning into an FM station will automatic ally change the reception mode to monaural reception to increase the signal quality. 1 Repeat st eps 1 and 2 in “A utomati c tuning” to select TUNER and the reception band.
46 FM/AM TUNING 3 Press and hold MEMOR Y (MAN’L/A UT O FM) on the front panel for more than 3 seconds. The preset group and number as well as the MEMOR Y and A UTO indicators flash. After approximately 5 seconds, au tomatic presetting starts from the currently selected frequency and p roceeds to ward the higher freq uencies.
47 FM/AM TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION Y ou can also store up to 40 FM or AM stations (8 stations in each of the 5 groups, A1 to E8) man ually . Y ou must first set AMP/SOURCE/TV to SOURCE and then press TUNER on the remote control to select TU NER as the input source.
48 FM/AM TUNING 5 Press MEMOR Y (MAN’L/A UTO FM) on the front panel while the M EMOR Y indicator is flashing. The station band and frequenc y appear in th e front panel display with the preset group and nu mber you hav e selected. 6 Repeat step s 1 to 5 to store other sta tions.
49 FM/AM TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION 3 Press PRESET/TUNING/CH l / h (or PRESET k / n on the remot e contro l) to select a preset station number (1 through 8). The preset group and number appear in the front panel display along with th e station band, frequency and the TUNED indicator lights up.
XM SATELLITE RADIO TUNING 50 XM Satellite Radio is the satelli te radio service with millions of listene rs across the United States broadcasting li ve daily .
51 XM SATELLITE RADIO TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION This section describes the functions of each control used for XM Satellite Radio tuning. The following controls are only av ailable when XM is selected as the input source.
52 XM SATELLITE RADIO TUNING T o sign up for an account with the XM Satellite Radio service, an XM Sa tellite Ra dio ID number is required. Follo w the procedure belo w to check your ID number , and then access the website a t “http://acti vate.xmradi o.
