3 Preparing the phone To insert the SIM ca rd and batter y 1 Remove th e battery cover. S lide the SIM card into its hold er with the contac ts facing down. 2 Insert the battery w ith the labe l side up a nd the conne ctors facing each othe r. Replace the battery cover as shown in the picture.
4 To charge the battery 1 The phone batte ry is partly charg ed when you bu y it. Connect the charger to the phon e. It takes approxima tely 2.5 hours to fully charge th e battery. Press a ke y to illuminat e the screen. 2 To remove t he charger, tilt the plu g upwards.
5 To turn on the phone 1 Press and hold down . 2 Enter your PIN if reques ted. To correct mi stakes, press . 3 Select OK . 4 Select a language. 5 Enter the time and date and select Save .
6 SIM and PIN SIM card The SIM (Subscribe r Identity Module) card, which you get from your n etwork operator, contains informat ion about your subscription . Always tur n off your pho ne and detach the charger and remov e the battery before you insert or remove the SIM card.
7 Network coverage The network bars show the strength of the GSM ne twork in your area. Try moving to anothe r location if you have trouble calling and network coverage is poor.

15 Messaging Text messages (SMS) You must have a service centre number, which is supplied by your service provider and saved on the SIM card. You may have to enter the number yourself. To set a service centre number 1 From standby selec t Menu > Messaging > Settings > Text message > Service centre .
16 Picture messages (MMS) Picture messa ges can contain tex t, images and sounds. To create and send a pictu re message 1 From standby press . 2 Select Picture msg . 3 Press or to switch between writing text and adding items. Select Options to sele ct writ ing op tions.
17 Contacts You can save con tacts in t he phone memory or on th e SIM card. You can copy contacts from t he phone me mory to t he SIM card or from t he SIM ca rd to the p hone me mory. To add a contact 1 From standby press . 2 Scroll to New contact and select Add .

19 Radio To listen to the radio 1 Connect the hands free to the phone. 2 From standby selec t Menu > Entertainment > FM radio . To control the radio • Press or to search for channels manually.
20 Music player You can play music files saved in the phone memory. The music stops when you receive or mak e a call, and th e playing resu mes when the call has ended. To play a music track 1 From standby press . 2 Scroll to Tracks and select Open . 3 Scroll to the track and sele ct Play .
21 Camera Your phone has a digital camera to take pictures to save or send. Pictures tak en with th e camera a re saved in Menu > Organizer > File manager > Camera album . The format is JPEG. To start the came ra and take a picture 1 Open the slide.
22 More functions Ringtones and themes Themes are used to change the appearance of th e screen. To select volume, ringtone or vibrating alert 1 From standby selec t Menu > Settings > the Sounds & alerts tab.
23 Alarms You can se t a sound or t he radio as a n alarm si gnal. The alarm sounds even if the phone is tu rned off. To set an alarm 1 From standby selec t Menu > Organizer > Alarm s . 2 Scroll to an alar m and select Edit . 3 Scroll to Time: and select Edit .
24 TrackID™ TrackID™ is a music recognition service. Sear ch for song titles, artists and album names. You must have correct Inter net settings in yo ur phone. See Internet on page 29. To search for song in formation • When you hear a song through a loudspeaker, from standby select Menu > Entertainment > TrackID™ .
25 To enter text using predictive text input • For example, if you want to write the word “land”, press , , , . • If the wor d or punctu ation mark is the one you want, pre ss to accept and add a space. To ac cept a word without adding a sp ace, press .
26 Multiple calls When call waitin g is activ ated, you will he ar a beep when you receive a second c all. To activate call waiting • From standby selec t Menu > Settings > the Calls tab > Manage calls > Call waiting > Activate . To answer a sec ond call 1 When you he ar a beep during a ca ll, select Answer .
27 Voicemail Callers can leave a voicemai l message when you cannot answer. As k your operat or for your voicemail nu mber. To enter your voicemail number 1 From standby selec t Menu > Messaging > Settings > Voicemail no. 2 Enter the voicemail numbe r and select OK .
28 Time and date To set the time 1 From standby selec t Menu > Settings > the General tab > Time & date > Time . 2 Select Form at and choose a time format. 3 Enter the t ime and select Sa ve . To set the date 1 From standby selec t Menu > Settings > the General tab > Time & date > Date .
29 Internet To browse the Internet, you n eed the correc t settings in your phone. If settings are not in your phone, you ca n: • Get them in a text message (SMS) from your network operator. • On a computer, go to www.sonyericsson.com/support and reques t a text m essage wit h the set tings.
30 To move a file to a folder in the file manager 1 From standby selec t Menu > Organizer > File manager . 2 Find the file and select Opt ions > Manage file > Move . 3 Navigate to the folder and select Paste . To delete a file in the f ile manager 1 From standby selec t Menu > Organizer > File manager .
31 Bluetooth™ wireless technology Bluetooth™ wireless technology ena bles wireless connections to o ther Bluetooth devices, for ex ample, a Blue tooth handsfree.
32 To pair a dev ice with yo ur phone 1 Make sure the phone and the de vice are v isible and ready to paired. 2 From standby selec t Menu > Settings > the Connectivity tab > Bluetooth > My devices > New device to s earch for available dev ices.
33 Locks SIM card lock The SIM ca rd lock pro tects yo ur subscription, but not your phone itse lf, from unauthor ized use. If you ch ange SIM c ards, the phone still works with the new SIM card.
34 To edit your PIN 1 From standby selec t Menu > Settings > the General tab > Security > SI M lock > Change PIN . 2 Enter your PIN and select OK .
35 To edit your phone lock code 1 From standby selec t Menu > Settings > the General tab > Security > Phone lock > Change c ode . 2 Enter the current code and sele ct OK . 3 Enter a new code and select OK . 4 Re-enter t he new co de to conf irm and se lect OK .
36 Troubleshooting Some problems require that you call your service pro vider, but you can correc t most problems yourself. Remove the SIM card before handing your phone in for repair.
37 I cannot turn the phone on , what should I do? Try charging the phon e until it has finished chargin g. Connect the charger (make su re the power icon on the charger is facing upwards) and char ge the phone f or 2.5 hours. T he battery i con on the scr een may not appe ar until t he phone ha s charge d for 30 minutes.
