BASIC O PERA TION AND QUICK RE FERENCE The SD9 camera has many adv anced features. This section, describes ba sic camera operation . Y ou can find more details in following section s. Load the batteries (P .19) Be sure the batteries are orie nted correctly .

LOADING THE BA TTERIES The SD9 uses tw o set s of batteries. Make sure tha t both set s of batter ies are in place before using the camera. CHECKING THE BA TTER Y ST A TUS When “D”-dial i s set to driv e area (p.14), the battery icon, w hich shows the capaci ty of the battery , is shown on the top LCD p anel. The remain ing battery power of CR123A (DL123A) and CR-V3 (or AA type) is displayed sep arately .
USING A HOME POWER SUPPL Y Y ou can pow er the camera from a w all outlet using the prov ided AC Adapter - (SAC-1). When u s ing y our camera for an ex tended period of time o r reviewing the pictures o r connecting the camera to a computer , we recommend that y ou operate the camera from a hou sehold power outlet.
MOUNTING AND REMOVING THE LENS The SD9 camera use S A type inside and out side bayonet moun t (SA-IB and SA-OB) respec tively . 1 Make sure to turn the “D”- Dial to OFF position (Power Off position) 2 Remove the Camer a’s body cap and the lens’ rear cap.
MOUNTING A N D REMOVING THE LENS 4 T o remove the lens, press the lens l ock button and turn the lens c ounter–clock wise until it stops. Gently remove the l ens from the ca mera body . C A U TION !! · On the mount surface of the lens, t here are a number of electric contacts.
SETTING THE LANGUAGE Camera menus and messages appe aring on the color LCD monitor can be displayed in ei ther English, Jap anese, German or French. Y ou should recei ve the SD9 camera pre-se t to English, how ever , if necessary , you can ch ange the camera language y ourself.
SETTING THE TIME AND DA TE The SD9 camera r ecords the dat e and time when each image is ca ptured and sto res this information with t he image. T o e nsure that th e correct infor mation is recorde d.
INSERTING AND REMOVING THE CF CARD The SD9 camera use s CompactFlash™ (CF) card s to store images. The camera support s both T ype I and T ype II CF cards, includi ng Microdrives. TO INSER T THE CF C ARD 1 Set the “D”-Dial to th e OFF position .

FORMA TTI NG THE CF CARD New CF card s must be formatted befo re use. Additionally , cards with corru pt or incomp atible file systems may need to b e formatted before u se. T O FORM A T THE CF C A RD 1 Make sure the came ra is turned on . 2 Press the < MEN U > button on the back of the camera to displa y the Camera Set-up Menu.
FILE NUMBERING SYSTEM The images y ou take are automatically assigned file numbers fr om 00001 to 99999. When images are being review ed, the file number o f each image is displayed in the left co rner of the Info S trip (see P. 6 8 ). The file n umber is also incorporated in to the filename of the image.
FILE NUMBERING SYSTEM 4 Press < > arrow or < OK > to open sub-menu. 5 Use < / > arrows on the 4-way controll er to select numbering system. 6 Press < > arrow or < OK > to apply the setting or < > arrow or < CA NCEL > to close sub-menu without maki ng any chan ges.
FRAME NUMBER CO UNTER This display show s the number of images that can be r ecorded on the CF-Card. l The number of images that ca n be recorded on the CF card is depending on the settings you choose. For example, in t he illustration on t he left, 32 pictures can be store d on the CF card.
FRAME NUMBER C OUNTER l When the camera is occupied with image processing, the frame numbe r value blinks on th e top LCD panel. A cursor will be in motio n on the frame number value to show the progress. l The shutter will not release when the camera is busy with processing .
DIOPTER ADJUSTME NT Adjust the v iewfinder diopter so that you can see clearly through the v iewfinder . While looking t hrough the viewfinder , slide the Diopter Adjuster to th e left or to the right, until the image appears shar p on the focus scree n.
HOLDING THE CAMERA T o av oid the camera shake , which can result in b lurriness of your photograp h, hold the camera steady . Ɣ Firmly grasp the cam era’s grip with your right hand. Ɣ Hold the camer a stead y with your left hand an d support th e bottom of t he camera and the lens.
SETTING THE ELECTRONIC SOUND This camera will inform y ou with an Electronic Sound “Pi- Pi”, when the camera confirms fo cus. It is possibl e to cancel this electroni c sound, if y ou desire. 1 Press the “ FUNC ” button 2 time s (Press and hold the button at 2 nd time).
SELECTING THE EXPOSURE MODE The features an d the operation metho ds of four dif ferent exposure modes of the came ra are explained below . P PROGRAM AE T o make picture taking easier , the camera w ill automatically sele ct an appropriate combination of shutter speed and aperture v alue, according to brightness o f the subject.
PR O GR AM AE 㻃 When this mark blinks, shutter speed ma y become slow and picture can be bl urred. In this case, please p erform flash ph otography ( P. 6 1 ) or to prevent blurring, pl ease use a tripod e tc. PROGRAM SHI FT Y ou can ch ange the combinati on of shutter speed a nd aperture value, which were selected by the camera, if you desire.
A APERTURE PRIORITY AE After you set the apertur e value you desire, the camer a will determine th e appropriate shutter speed. If you select smaller aper tures, depth of field will be greater . The larger apertur es tend to blur the background, as depth o f field will be shallower .
S SHUTT ER SPEED PRIORITY AE When y ou set the desired sh utter speed, the camera will select the appropriate aperture v alue for correct ex posure. Y ou can achiev e stop action ef fect s by selecting a fast shutter speed, or express the feeling of motion speed for a moving subject by selecting a slow sh utter speed.
M MANUAL EXPOSURE Set both the shutte r speed and aper ture value acco rding to the indication of the exposure mete r . Y ou can change the exposure, a s you desire. 1 Set the “D”-Dial to th e “Drive-Area” ( P. 1 4 ). 2 Set the “Mode”-Sele ctor to the “ M ” position.
BULB SET TING When long time ex posures are require d (for shooting night scenes or very dark subject s) the use of the “Bulb” setting is recommended. Please use tripod when taking pictures with thi s setting. Bulb photograp hy can be performed only when ISO sensi tivity is set to ISO100.
Adjustment of auto focus and manual focus operation are e xplained below . HOW T O USE A UT OFOCUS It is possib le to use Auto focus function only with AF Lenses. Y our camera is equipped w ith highly preci se AF System and incorporates tw o differe nt aut ofo cus mod es.
HOW TO USE AUTOFOCUS In such cases, plea se use one of the followi ng focusing methods. 1. Use the Focus L ock function to focus on anot her subject, which has a simila r focusing distance as your sub ject. 2. Set the lens to MF m ode and focus man ually .
FOCUS LOCK If you w ant to ta ke the picture o f a su bject, which is out of the focu s detecting area, use fo cus lock function. Thi s function can be used only in (single AF mode) 1 Compose the de sired focusing subject in the center of viewfinder an d then press the shutter button “Half-way”.
OPERA TION OF THE DRIVE MODE Operation of the self-time r , and oth er functions of th e camera are explained by the following: DRIVE-AREA Some of the import ant operations and settings of the camera can be activate d by the driv e area of the “D”-dial.
CONTINUOUS SHOOTING In this mode, when y ou keep the shutter button fully depressed, the camera w ill take pi ctures continuously . At the time of continuous sh ooting the number of frames per sec. is g iven below . HI MED LOW Burst Rate 1.9fp s f or 6frames 2.
SELF TIMER ■ Y ou will hear the ele ctronic sound d uring “Self-time r” operation , even if y ou set the electronic sound op tion to OFF . ■ If you want to canc el the “Self-timer” opera tion, turn the “D”-dial to another position.
This sectio n explains the application of the more adv anced functions o f your camera, w hen composing the expressions of your pi cture. SETTING THE WHITE BALANCE 䟺 WB 䟻 The color of light reflected by an object can v ary depending on the color of the light source illuminating it.
SETTING THE WHIT E BALANCE WHITE BALANCE O PTIONS OPTION COLOR TEMP. DESCRIPTION Au t o (Default) ̛ Select this setting to allow t he camera to automatically determine the appropriate white balance adjustments. Sunlight Approx. 5400 K Select this setting when taking pictures in full sunlight.
SETTING THE WHIT E BALANCE SETTI NG A CUSTO M WHITE BALA NCE For more precise control of th e white bal ance setting or when photogra phing under unusual lighting conditions, the " Set Custom WB " option ca n be used t o capture a ample of neutral o bject in a scene to be used for color correct ion.
SETTING THE WHIT E BALANCE TI P · When a custom white bala nce setting is successfully capt ured, " Custo m " will automatically becom e the selected item i n the White Balanc e menu.

AE LOCK The camera will fix and memorize the exposure value, w hile you press the “ AE” Lock button. When you wish to lock the ex posure of a subject o ff-cente r , AE lock is very useful . Use of this function w ith Center Area Metering Mode is recommended.
EXPOSURE COMPENSA TION If you w ant to intentionally overexpose or underex pose the picture, u se this function. While pressing the Exposure Compe nsation button, turn the “C”-dial to s et the desire d compensation value. Then, release t he Exposure Compensation butt on.
AUT O BR ACKETING This function of the camera let s you take a sequence of picture s of the same subject at three different ex posure levels; Appropriate Ex posure, Under Exposure and Over Exposure. If it i s diffi c ult to determine the proper exposure, please use this fun ction.
A UTO BRA CKETI NG For the first frame, “ ” mark will be displayed contin uously on the LCD panel. For the second fram e, “ ” mark on the LCD panel, will blink sl owly , then it will blink quickly for the t hird frame. 䕋 When you set the self-timer mode, th e camera will a utomatically take three consecutive pictures .
REMOTE CONTROLL ER (RS-1 1 AND RS-21) This ac cessory perm its releasing the camera’ s shut ter from up to 16 feet ( 5m) away from in front of the camer a, or up to 9.8 feet (3m) away if y ou are 30 degrees to ei ther side. (Depending o n the lens, there may be some restricti ons when using it from the left side of the camera.
REMOTE CONTRO LLER (RS-1 1 AND RS-21) 7 After t a king the pictu re, please cancel the remote control mod e following the above procedure from num ber 3 to 4 , and then choo se “- -“ mark to canc el remote control function. MAGNIFYING IMAGES (ZOOMED-IN VIEW) T o v iew image detail or check focus, recorded images can be magnified up to 5 levels, depe nding on the re solution of the image. T O M A GNIFY IMAGE Press < > on the + / − Controller from Single-Image View .

IMAGE INFO SCREEN FO R MAGNIFIED IMAGES It is possible to obtain det ailed histo gram information for a p articular se ction of an image by opening the Image In fo Screen from Zoomed-In V iew . · For more informati on on the histogram see next section.
HIST OGRAM The histogram i s a graph depicting the distribution of brightness values in the image for ea ch of the three color channels (Red, Green, and Blue) . The horizont al axis show s the brightness l evel, with darker pixels tow ards the left side and brigh ter pixels tow ard the right.
OVER-EXPOSURE W ARNING Highlight areas of a n image where de tail may be lost due to o ver-exposure will be indicated by a solid red o verlay when Exposure Warning is set to On in the Camera Set-up Menu. T he over-exposure overlay will be visible in t he all views e xcept for Contact Sheet and Jump Mode.
VIEWING IMAGES ON A TV The SD9 camera can be conne cted to a television or a v ideocassette recorder using the provided v ideo cable, allowing the recorded images to be viewed on the telev ision monitor or recorded on videotape .
This sectio n describes how to delete the image( s) recorded on a CF card. Images recorded on the CF card ca n be deleted one at a time or several at once using the Delete Menu .
DELETING A SINGLE IMAGE T O DELETE A SINGLE IM A GE 1 Use the < / / / > arrows on the 4-way controller to select th e image to be deleted in Contact Sheet or Single-Image View . 2 Press < DEL > to displa y the Delete Menu. · “Current image” will be the default select ion.

RECOVERING A DELETED IMAGE One of the un ique feat ures of t he S D9 came ra is th e abil ity t o recove r accidentally deleted images. C A U TION !! · Image recovery mus t take place immediatel y after images ar e deleted, or they may be permanently lost.
Image modification s, such as locking, marking, and rot ating, as well a s automatic image play back, can be performed from the Modifi cation Menu. The Modification Menu contain s the Lock Menu, Mar k Menu, Rotate Menu, and Slideshow Menu. TO DISPLA Y THE MODIFICA TION MENU Press the < MOD > button on the back of the camera.
LOCKING IMAGES Locking protect s images from being a ccidentally deleted. Locked images must be unlocked befo re they ca n be deleted by the Delete Menu function s. LOCK MENU MENU ITEM DESCRIPTION Lock/Unlock Lock the currentl y selected image onl y. If the image is already locked, the menu item chan ges to “Unlock”.

MARKING IMAGES Images can be marked for v arious reason s, such a s to identify fav orites, to select images for a slideshow , or to select images to be deleted w ith the “All marked” menu item in the Delete Menu ( P. 7 9 ). ROT A TING IMAGES Images t aken with a v ertical (portrait) orientatio n can be r otated fo r more convenient v iewing on the color LCD monitor or on an a ttached telev ision. The images’ new orient ation w ill be used in all v iews as w ell as in the slideshow .
ROT A TING IM AGES 5 Press < OK > to rotate the image an d close the Modification Menu or < CA NCEL > to return to reviewing i mages without rotating. TI P · To rotate an image 1 80 degrees, rotate i t twice in t he same direction. · To get an image back into its original orienta tion, rotate i t in the opposite direction.
USING THE OK BUTT ON SHORTCUT The < OK > button can be used as a shortcut key for locking, marki ng, or rotatin g images. By setting the < OK > button to perform the most commonly used o peration, images can be ea sily locked, marked, or rot ated with a single b utton press.
TO USE THE < OK > SHORTCUT 1 Press < VIEW > to see recorded images. 2 Use the < / / / > arrows on the 4-way controller to s elect an image . 3 Press < OK > to lock, mark, or rotate the image or toggle exposure warning (depen ding on the shortcut setting) .

AUT O POWER OFF In order to conserve battery power , the SD9 camera goes into a low-power mode if not u sed for a prede termined amount of time. The Auto Power Off timeout can be set using the Camera Set-up Menu to 10 second s, 30 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes, or Off.
