Section 1A Setting Up Service In This Section Getting Started With PCS Service Setting Up V oicemail Getting Help T his section walks you through setting up ser vice for your PCS Phone, unlocking your phone, setting up your voicemail, and contacting Sprint for assistance with your PCS Ser vice.
Getting Started With PCS Service Determine if Y our Phone is Already Activated If you received your phone in the mail or purchased it at a Sprint Store, it probably has already been activated. All you need to do is unlock your phone. If your phone is not activated, please refer to the Start Here Guide included with your phone.
Setting Up Y our V oicemail All unanswer ed calls to your PCS Phone are automatically transferred to voicemail, even if your phone is in use or tur ned of f. Theref ore, you will want to set up your voicemail and per sonal greeting as soon as your PCS Phone is activated.

Y our PCS Vision Video Phone Key Functions 1. Sub LCD: Lets you monitor the phone’ s status and see who’s calling without opening the phone. 2. Speaker: Allows you hands-free conversation while in speakerphone mode. Lets you hear the dif fer ent r ingers and sounds.
9. Ready Link Button: Press to access the PCS Ready Link List (see “Using PCS Ready Link” on page 27). 10. LED/Flash: The LED shows your phone’s connection status at a glance. The f lash lets you take pictures clearly from about 1.5 feet in low light.
Viewing the Display Screen This list identifies the symbols you’ ll see on your display screen. shows your current signal strength. The more lines you have, the stronger your signal. means your phone cannot find a signal. tells you a call is in progress.

T urning Y our Phone ON and OFF T urning Y our Phone On Press to tur n your phone on. Once your phone is On, it displays “Looking for ser vice... ” which indicates that your phone is searching for a signal. When your phone finds a signal, it automatically enters standby mode – the phone’s idle state.
Using Y our Phone’ s Battery Battery Capacity Y our PCS Phone is equipped with a Lithium Ion (LiIon) batter y . It allows you to recharg e your batter y before it is fully drained. The batter y provides approximately 3.25 hours of continuous digital talk time (1.
Charging the Battery Y our PCS Phone comes with a recharg eable batter y . Y ou should charg e the batter y as soon as possible so you can begin using your phone.
Displaying Y our Phone Number Just in case you forget your phone number , your PCS Phone can remind you. T o display your phone number: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Contacts and press . 3. Select My Phone# and press . Note: T o access the phone’ s main menu, press from standby mode.
Important: T o maximize performance when using your PCS Phone, extend the antenna before a call and do not touch the antenna during a call (see page 217). T o place a call with the Flip Closed: 1. Make sure your phone is on. 2. Press and hold the Side Call ke y ( ) on the r ight side of the phone.
T o answ er a call with the Flip Closed: 1. Make sure your phone is on. (If your phone is of f, incoming calls go to voicemail.) 2. When your phone r ings or vibrates, press and hold the Side Call key ( ) on the r ight side of the phone. (The Call will be answ ered in speakerphone mode.
Answering a Roam Call With Call Guard Enabled T o answ er a call when you are roaming and Call Guard is enabled: 1. Press or . (The following message will appear: “Roaming rate applies.
Changing the Ringer V olume T o chang e the ringer volume, press the Side V olume key when the phone is in standby mode. Note: T o change the ringer volume from the main menu, see “Adjusting the Phone’ s Volume Settings” on page 49.
Missed Call Notification for Voice Calls When an incoming voice call is not answered, the Missed Call Notification is displayed on your screen. T o call the last Missed V oice Call: Simply press or while the Missed Call Notification is display ed.
Dialing Options Dialing options are display ed when you press after enter ing numbers in the phone’ s standby mode. T o select an option, highlight it and press . Call to dial the phone number . Call:Speaker On to dial the phone number in speakerphone mode.
In-Call Options During a call, your phone displays menu options when you press . T o select an option, highlight it and press . Flash to answer an incoming Call W aiting call or to connect a third party during Three-W ay Calling. Mute or Unmute Select Mute to mute your phone’ s microphone.
End-of-Call Options T o display the following options, press within 10 seconds after disconnecting a call. T o select an option, highlight it and press . Call Again to dial the phone number . Call:Speaker On to dial the phone number in speakerphone mode.
Finding a Phone Number Y ou can search Contacts entries for phone numbers that contain a specific string of number s. T o find a phone number: 1. Enter the last four or more dig its of the number and press . The more number s you enter , the more specific the search becomes.
Abbreviated Dialing When you enter four digits of a phone number , the screen displays “ Abbrev . Dial. ” Y our phone dials the phone number in your Contacts list that ends with the four digits you entered. T o make a call using Abbreviated Dialing: 1.
Using Speed Dialing With this featur e, you can dial your favorite entr ies using one key press for locations 2-9 (see page 64 for setting Speed Dialing). T o use speed dial for voice calls: From standb y mode, press and hold the appropr iate ke y for approximately two seconds.
Using PCS Ready Link PCS Ready Link allows you to connect with your fr iends, famil y and co-wor kers with just one push of a button. Y ou can make 1-to-1 or 1-to-many calls instantly like a two-way radio. This feature provides a rang e of solutions to meet your communications needs.
Ready Link Call Alerts There are several ways your PCS Phone aler ts you during PCS Ready Link calls. When you make or receive a PCS Ready Link call: The phone beeps. The backlight illuminates. The screen displays a PCS Ready Link call message.
Incoming Calls sho ws the last 10 different PCS Ready Link calls you accepted. Missed Calls sho ws the last 10 PCS Ready Link calls you missed. T ip: Y ou can also select Enter R-Link# from Go to option to enter a PCS Ready Link number directly.
5. When you are finished, press . Note: When neither party has the floor during a PCS Ready Link call, “ Floor is open. ” appears on the display. If no one takes the floor for 20 seconds, the PCS Ready Link call ends automatically. T ip: If you press or during step 3 on the previous page, you can make a standard voice call.
Making a PCS Ready Link Call by Entering a Number T o place a PCS Ready Link Call b y entering a number: 1. From standb y mode, enter the PCS Ready Link number you want to dial. 2. Press to place the PCS Ready Link call. Continue holding to take the f loor and speak.
Receiving a PCS Ready Link Call (1-to-1 Call) 1. Make sure your phone’ s PCS Ready Link mode is enabled (see “Setting PCS Ready Link Mode” on pa g e 27). 2. When you receive a PCS Ready Link call from a contact, “R-Link Call, ” the contact’s name, and the PCS Ready Link number appear on the display .
Redialing a PCS Ready Link Call Y ou can redial to the last PCS Ready Link call that you dialed or received (whichever was more recent). T o redial a PCS Ready Link call: 1. From the PCS Ready Link List, highlight Redial , and press and hold . Y ou will see R-Link redialing.
PCS Ready Link Options When you use PCS Ready Link, several user options are available b y pressing Options (right softkey). T o select an option, highlight it and press . Edit to edit a PCS Ready Link number and/or name. See page 39. Erase to erase a contact.
Copying an Entry to Personal List or Personal Group List Y ou can copy an entr y to your Personal List/Per . Groups. If the selected entr y is already stored in the Personal List/Per . Groups, the “copy” option does not appear . T o copy an entr y from the last PCS Ready Link call: 1.
T o copy an entr y from the Company Group List: 1. From step 4 on the previous page, highlight Co. Groups and press . 2. Highlight a group you want to cop y and press Options (right softkey). T o select an option, highlight it and press . Copy to Personal to copy the entr y to your Personal Group List.
Adding a New Contact to Y our Personal List Y ou can store the total of 200 entries in the Personal List/Per . Groups. T o add a new PCS Ready Link contact: 1. Press R-Link (left softke y) or press to access the PCS Ready Link List. 2. Press Go to (left softke y), highlight Personal List , and press .
Adding a New Group to Y our Personal Group List Y ou can add new groups to the Personal Group List. Each group can include up to five member s. Y ou can enter a group member directly , or select the member from the Company List or Personal List. T o add a new PCS Ready Link group entr y: 1.
Editing a Contact in Y our Personal List T o edit a Personal List contact: 1. Follow steps 1-2 in “ Adding a New Contact to Y our Personal List” on page 37. 2. Highlight the entr y you want to edit and press Options (right softkey). Options: Edit to edit your desired contact.
3. Highlight Edit and press . 4. Edit the group name and press or OK (left softkey). If you don’t need to edit the group name, press Next (left softkey) dur ing step 4 above and skip step 5. 5. Press Save (left softke y) to save your changes. 6.
Erasing an Entry in Y our Personal List or Personal Group List T o erase a contact or a group: 1. From the PCS Ready Link List, press Go to (left softke y), highlight Personal List or Per . Groups , and press . 2. Highlight the entr y you want to erase and press Options (r ight softkey).
Erasing a PCS Ready Link List Y ou can erase all entr ies saved in the PCS Ready Link List (except Company List/Co. Groups). T o erase a PCS Ready Link List: 1. From the PCS Ready Link List, press Options (right softkey). 2. Highlight Erase R-Link List and press .

Setting a Start-up/Power-off T one 1. Follow steps 1-4 in “Selecting a T one Length. ” 2. Select the menu under Start-up T one or Power-off T one and press . 3. Select Get New and press to star t up the browser so you can select an item to download (see page 116).
Adjusting the Phone’ s Volume Settings T o adjust the Ringer/K ey v olume: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Sounds and press . 4. Select Ringer/Key Vol. and press . 5. Select the item you wish to change and press .
Alert Notification Y our phone comes with several dif fer ent options to keep you aw are of what’ s going on by sounding an aler t or a r inger . Service sets aler t On or Off for networ k ser vices parameter chang es. V oicemail sets an alert to notify you of voice messages.
Silence All There may be times when you need to silence your phone entirely . The phone’ s Silence All option allows you to mute all sounds without turning your phone of f . T o activate Silence All: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press .
Display Settings Changing the T ext Greeting The text greeting can be up to 15 characters and is displayed on your phone’ s screen in standby mode. Y ou may choose to display a custom greeting or default greeting. T o display or change your custom greeting: 1.
6. Select Always On , Always Off , or your defined time length and press . Always Off alw ays turns the backlight of f. Always On keeps the backlight on indefinitely . Note: The Always On setting returns to the previous value the next time you turn on the phone.
Changing the Display for Incoming Calls Y ou can set the color or downloaded image (screen saver) to be shown on the Incoming Calls display . Follow these steps: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Display and press .
Changing the Display for Standby Mode This feature ena bles you to select a variety of items to display in standby mode. T o set your standb y display: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Display and press . 4. Select Standby Display and press .
Changing the Screen Saver Y our new PCS Phone of fers you the option of displaying a screen saver while in standb y mode. T o assign a screen saver: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Display and press . 4. Select Standby Display and press .
Changing the LED Indicator Color T o chang e the phone’ s LED indicator color: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Display and press . 4. Select LED and press . 5. Select During call , Incoming Calls , Voicemail , Messaging ,o r Calendar and press .
Changing the Font Size There are four font size settings for the message notification and browser . T o chang e the font size: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Display and press . 4. Select Font Size and press .
Airplane Mode When your phone is in Airplane Mode, it cannot send or receive any calls (except for 911 dialing) or access online information. Y ou may still use the phone’ s other featur es, such as Games, V oice Memos, Calendar , etc., while you are in Airplane Mode.
T o turn TTY Mode On or Of f: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Others and press . 4. Select TTY and press . 5. Y ou will see a message on the display . Press OK (left softkey) to continue. 6. Select Enable or Disable and press .
Phone Setup Options Shortcut Y our phone offers you the option of assigning a shor tcut key to a fav orite or often-used function. Pressing on the Navigation key in standby mode will launch your user-defined shortcut. T o assign your shor tcut ke y: 1.
Setting the Open/Close Flip Option This feature ena bles you to answ er an incoming call by opening the f lip or to end a call b y closing the f lip. T o activate the Open Flip feature: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3.
Setting Any Key Answer This feature allows you to answer incoming calls b y pressing any key (e xcept , , , , , , the Side Camera key , or the Navigation key). T o activate this feature: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press .
Setting Speed Dialing With this featur e you can dial Contacts Director y entries with one key press for locations 2-9. Save your memor y locations 2-9 for speed dialing your most commonly used phone number s. Speed Dial numbers must be stored in your Contacts to use this feature.
Setting Abbreviated Dialing Abbr eviated Dialing is another form of speed dialing. It allows you to dial a number by entering just the last four digits of any number in your Contacts Director y .
With the headset: V oice Call: Pr ess the T urbo Button to activate V oice dial. Press twice to redial the last call. Press and hold the button to record a V oice Memo. Ready Link: Pr ess and hold the T urbo Button to redial the last PCS Ready Link call.
Editing Canned Messages Y our phone can store pre-set (canned) messa g es for use with text messaging and Picture Mail. Y ou can edit your phone’s default canned messages through the Settings menu. (For more information on using canned messages, see pages 141 and 184.
Changing the Menu Language When you fir st turn your phone on, the menus are displayed in English. T o chang e the menu language to Spanish: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Others and press . 4. Select Language and press .

T o insert pauses into a special number: 1. From step 4 on the previous page, enter the phone number and press Options (right softkey) for the options. 2. Highlight Hard Pause , 2-Sec. Pause , or Hyphen and press . 3. Finish enter ing the rest of the numbers and press .
Resetting and Locking Y our Phone Through SMS When your phone is lost or stolen, you can erase your impor tant personal information (such as Contacts entr ies, call histor y , and messages) and lock your phone by sending a special formatted SMS message to your phone.
Security Features for PCS Vision SM Signing In and Out of PCS Vision Services Y ou can sign out of PCS Vision ser vices without turning off your phone; howev er you will not have access to all PCS Vision ser vices, including W eb and messag ing. Signing out will avoid any charges associated with PCS Vision ser vices.

Understanding Roaming Recognizing Icons on the Display Screen Y our phone’ s display screen always lets you know when you’ re off the Spr int Nationwide PCS Network and whether your phone is operating in analog or digital mode. The following chart indicates what you’ ll see depending on where you’ re using your phone.
Roaming on Analog Networks When you roam on analog networks, y ou will experience a similar quality provided b y other analog carr iers today . Although some featur es, such as PCS Vision, PCS V oice Command, and PCS Ready Link, will be unavailable, you can still make and receive calls and access voicemail.
Setting Y our Phone’ s Roam Mode Y our PCS Phone allows you to control your ability to roam. By using the Roaming menu option, you can determine which signals your phone accepts. Set Mode Choose from three dif ferent settings on your dual-band/tr i-mode phone to control your roaming experience.
Controlling Roaming Charges Using Call Guard In addition to the roaming icon, Call Guard aler ts you when roaming charg es apply . This featur e makes it easy to mana g e your roaming charg es b y reminding you when you make or receive roaming calls. It also requires you to take an additional step before placing or answ ering a roaming call.

Every function and feature can be accessed through an onscreen menu. T ake a few moments to lear n your way around and you’ ll find your phone easier to use.
Menu Navigation The Navigation ke y on your PCS Phone allows you to scroll through menus quickly and easily . The scroll bar at the r ight of the menu keeps track of your position in the menu at all times. T o navigate through a menu, simply press / on the Navigation ke y .

Making a Call From Call History T o place a call from Call Histor y: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Call History and press . 3. Select Outgoing Calls , Incoming Calls or Missed Calls . 4. Press . 5. Highlight the entr y you want to call b y scrolling through the list.
Prepending a Phone Number From Call History If you need to make a call from Call Histor y and you happen to be outside your local area code, you can add the appropriate prefix by following these steps: 1. Highlight a call histor y entr y and press Options (right softkey).

Entering Characters Using T9 T ext Input T9 T ext Input lets you enter text in your PCS Phone by pressing keys just once per letter . (T o select the T9 Word mode when entering text, see “Selecting a Character Input Mode” on the previous page.
Entering Characters by T apping the Keypad T o enter characters by tapping the ke ypad, select the Alphabet mode (see “Selecting a Character Input Mode” on page 91). Press the corresponding ke y until the desired character appears. By default, the first letter of a word is capitalized and following letters are lowercase.
