Getting Started 5 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to get started with your phone by installing and charging the battery , installing the SIM card and optional memory card, and setting up your voic e mail. Before using your phone for the first time, you’ll need to install and charge the battery and install the SIM card.

Getting Started 7 T o replace the battery cover : 1. Align the cover tabs into their respective slots along the top of the battery compartment (1). 2. Carefully slide the cover into the top of the phone (2). 3. Press down on the back of the battery cover until you hear a click (3).
8 Instal ling and Remo vin g the SIM ca rd T o i nstall the SIM card: 1. Carefully slide the SIM card in to the SIM c ard socket until the card clicks into place. 2. Make sure that the card’s gold contacts face into the phone and that the upper-left angled co rner of the card is positioned as shown.
Getting Started 9 Inst alli ng the micr oSD Memory Card Y our phone supports an optional (external) microSD™ or microSDHC™ memory card for storage of media such as music, pictures, video and other files. T he SD card is designed for use with this mobile phone and other devices.
10 Batter y Before using your phone for the first time, install the battery and charge it fully . Important! : Before remov ing or replacin g the battery , make sure th e phone is switche d off. T o turn the phone off, hold do wn the key until the power- off imag e displays, then t ap Power off .
Getting Started 1 1 Char ging t he Batter y Y our phone is powered by a rechargeable Li-ion battery . A wall charger , which is used for charging the battery , is included with your phone. Use only approved batteries and chargers. Ask your local Samsung dealer for further details.
12 4. When charging is finished, first unpl ug the charger’s power plug from the AC wall outlet, then disconnect the charger’s connector from the phone. Important! : If your handset has a t ouch screen displa y, please note that a touch screen res pon ds best to a light to uch from the pad of your finger or a non-metallic st ylus.
Getting Started 13 The Power Savings application was designed to quickly activate (turn on), or deactivate (turn off) those functions or applications that use the most battery power. 1. From the Home screen, touch and hold an empty area until the Add to Home screen menu displays.
14 Important! : Before the initi al con figuration, you qu ic kly access emergency services by tapping Emerge ncy call and usin g t he o n-s c ree n di al er . 1. Press and hold until the phone switches on. The phone searches for your network and after finding it, you can make or receive calls.
Getting Started 15 Creating a New Google Account Y ou should create a Google ™ Account when you first use your device in order to fully utilize the functionality . This account provides access to several device features such as Gmail, Google Maps, Google Search, and the Android Ma rket applications.
16 Retrie ving your Goo gle Account Password A Google account password is required for Google applications. If you misplace or forget your Google Account p assword, follow these instructions to retrieve it: 1. From your computer , use an Internet browser and navigate to http://google.
Getting Started 17 T ask Manager Y our phone can run applications simultaneously , with some applications running in the background. Sometimes your device might seem to slow down over time, and the biggest reason for this are background applications.

20 6. Microphone - Is used during phone calls and allows other callers to hear you clearly when you are speaking to them. It is also used to make voice note recordings. 7. Quic k Searc h - Is used to search the device for applications, or contact information or to search the internet for information.
Understanding Y our Phone 21 Phone Display Y our phone’s display provides information about the phone’s status, and is the interface to the features of your phone. The display indicates your connection status, signal strength, battery status and time.
22 Indicates there is no signal available. Displays when there is no SIM card in the phone. Displays when there is a system error or alert. Displays when a call is in progress. Displays when a call is on hold. Displays when you have missed an incoming call.

32 • Rota te - Automaticall y change the screen o rientation fr om portrait to landscape by turning the device sideways. For example: rotate to landscape orientation when entering text, to provide a larger keyboard , or when viewing web content to minimize scroll ing.

34 Using Context Me nus Context menus (also called pop-up menus) contain options that apply to a specific item on the scr een. They function similarly to menu options that appear when you ri ght-click with your mouse on your desktop computer . 䊳 T ouch and hold an item on-screen to open its context menu.

42 Section 3: Memor y Car d Y our phone lets you use a microSD ™ (SD) or microSDHC ™ card (also referred to as a memory card) to expand available memory space. This secure digital card enables you to exchange images, music, and data between SD-com patible devices.
Memory Card 43 Importa nt!: DO NO T remove a microSD card whil e the device is accessin g or transferring files. Doing s o will result in loss or damag e of data. Make sure your batter y is fully charged b efore using the microSD card. Y our data may become damaged or lost if the battery runs out while you are using the micro SD card.
44 Erasing Files from the SD card Y ou can erase files from the SD card us ing the phone. 1. Ensure the SD card is mounted. For more information, refer to “Unmounting the SD ca r d” on page 43. 2. Press ➔ and then tap ( Settings ) ➔ Storage ➔ Unmount SD card .

46 Ending a Call from the Status Bar 1. T ap the Status Bar to reveal the Notifications tab, and then drag the tab to the bottom of the screen to open the Notifications panel (1).

48 • T ouch and drag the Reject call with message tab upward and tap a predefined rejection message or tap Create new message to create a new custom outgoing response. Pressing the V olume down button mutes the ringer . If the incoming call is from a nu mber stored in your Contacts, the entry’s name is displayed.

50 Wait Di alin g Inserting a Wait into your dialing sequence means that the phone waits until it hears a dial tone before proceeding with the next sequence of numbers. 1. From the Home screen, tap and use the on-screen keypad to enter the phone number.

52 Adjusting the Call V olume During a call, use the V olume ke ys on the left side of the phone, to adjust the earpiece volume. 䊳 Press the Up volume key to increase the volume level and the Down volume key to decrease the level. – or – From the screen during a call, press the Up Vo l u m e k e y.

54 Having a Priva te Conv ersation W ith One Par ticipant When you have two participants in a multi-party Manage Confere nce Call session, it might be necessary to place one of those participants on hold so that a private conversation can be held with a single caller .

Entering T ext 59 Section 5: Entering T ext This section describes how to se lect the desired text input method when entering characters into your phone. This section also describes the predictive text entr y system that reduces the amount of key strokes associat ed with entering text.

Using XT9 Predictive T ext XT9 is a predictive text system that has next-letter prediction and regional error correction, which compensates for users pressing the wrong keys on QWERTY keyboards.
68 • Word completion - T ells your device to at tempt to predict how to complete the word you have started. (A green check mark indicates the feature is enabled.) • Word completion point - Sets how many letters should be entered before a word prediction is made.

80 2. Determine which type of account information you want to synchronize with your Contact list. Selections are: Facebook, Tw itter, Linkedin, Mi crosoft Exchange ActiveSync, Google, or Samsung account . 3. T ap an account type to add. 4. Follow the prompts.

The following Messaging settings are available: Settings • Message font size - Enables the phone to cha nge the display size for the on-screen front.
90 – Free - Y ou may add any content t o the message. Push message settings • Push message - Allows you to receive push m essages from the network. • Service loading - Allows you to set the type of service loading notification. Choose from: Always , Prompt , or Never .

Messaging 93 • Add signature - Allows you to attach a customized signature to the bottom of all outgoing emails. • Signature - Allows you to create an email signature for yo ur outgoing Gmail email messages. • Email check frequency - Adjusts the time interval used by your device to check your email ac count for new email messages.
