Getting Started 5 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section allows you to quick ly start using your Samsung SCH-R830 phone by installing the SIM and microSD cards, installing and chargin g the batt ery , activating your service, and setting up you r voicemail account.
6 Setting Up Y our Phone Before using your phone, you need to install the SIM card, microSD™ card, and battery into their r espective internal slots and compartment. R emo ving the batter y co v er Pull up using the slot provided (1) , while lifting the cover off the phone (2).
Getting Started 7 Make sure the gold contacts of the SIM card face into the phone, then carefully slide the SIM card into the SIM card socket (as show n) until the card locks into place. Note: If the SIM card is not inserted correctly , the phone cannot make an L TE conne ction with the network.
8 Installing the Batter y 1. Remove the batter y cover . ( For more information, see “Removing the batter y cover” .) 2. Insert the batt ery into the ph one (1), a ligning the gold contacts on the battery w ith the gold contac ts in the phone. Push down on the bo ttom of the batter y (2) until it snaps into pla ce.
Getting Started 9 Charging the Batter y Y our phone comes with a Wall/USB Charger (Charging Head and USB cable) to rapidly charge your phone from any 120/ 220 V AC outlet. Note: The battery comes partially charged. Y ou must fully charge the ba ttery before usin g your phone for t he first time.
10 2. On the phone, slide the connector cover (1) to expos e the connector . 3. Insert the USB cable into t he port (2). 4. Plug the charging head into a standard AC power outlet. 5. When charging is complet e, unplug the charging head from the power outlet and remo ve the USB cable from the phone.
Getting Started 11 TTY Mode Y our phone is fully TTY -compatible, allowing you to connect a TTY device to the phone’ s headset jack. Before you can use your phone with a TTY device, you’ll nee d to enable TTY Mode. For mor e information, refer t o “Other call settings ” on page 43.

Getting Started 13 Y our Samsung Account A Samsung account is requ ired fo r you to access all features of such applications as Media Hub and Samsung Apps. When you turn on your phone for the first time, you should set up a connection with your existing Samsu ng account, or create a new Samsung account.

36 Ans wering Calls T o answer a n incoming call: On the Incoming call screen, touc h and drag to the right. Silencing an Incoming Call Ring tone When your phone alerts you to an incoming call, you can silence the ringtone for the call. (For more information, refer to “Ignoring a call” on page 36.

38 Sending Messages using Call Log 1. Press Home ➔ Phone ➔ Recent . 2. T o crea te a new messag e to a phone number in the Call log, do one of the following: • Swipe a call record to the le ft. • T ouch a call record, then touch . • T ouch the photo ID field on a Contact call reco rd, then touch beside the number to re ceive the message.

42 Increase volume in pock et When enabled, your phone uses its pr oximity sensor to detect when it is in a confin ed space (such as a pocket, a purse, or a protective carrier), y our phone alerts you to incoming calls with increased ring v olume. From the Call settings screen, touch Increase volum e in pocket to enable or disable th is option.

Entering T ext 45 Using the Samsung K eyboar d The Samsung Keyboard is a custom screen QWERTY keyboard, featuring predic tive text and handwriting recognition. Input characters b y touching the on-screen keys with your finger , or trace charac ters on the screen with your finger .
46 Changing the T ext Input Mode – Keyboard There are two main keybo ard layout keys that will change the on-screen keys within the QWERTY keyboard. The available T ext Input modes are: Sym and Abc . Note: When i n Abc mode, the 123 / Sym key appears.

52 Adding a Google account 1. Press Home ➔ Menu , then touch Settings ➔ Accounts and sync . 2. T ouch Add account ➔ Google . 3. At the Add a Google Account screen, touch an option: •E x i s t i n g : Enter your Google Username and Password , then touch Sign in .

54 Adding an Email account Select the Email acco unt option to add email accounts not added by other account options. (For more information, ref er to “Configuring Email Accounts” on page 76.) Press Home ➔ Menu , then touch Settings ➔ Accounts and sync ➔ Add account ➔ Email .

Types of Messages Y our phone s upports these types of messages : • T ext messages : Send and receive simp le messages contain ing text to other mobi le phones or email addr esses (also know n as SMS).

70 Managing Messages Thr eaded View Messages you send and receive to the same Co ntact, number , or address are grouped together as a “thr ead”. Threaded messages allo w you to see all the messa ges you exchanged with a Contact or othe r recipient, w ith the latest message displayed f irst.

T ouch Menu ➔ Settings to set: •D i s p l a y : – Bubble style : Choose the color and shape of the sent and received message bubbles. – Background style : Choose the type of background to appear behind the m essage bubbles.
72 • Multimedia message (MMS) settings : – Deliver y reports : When enabled, requests a report of delive ry date and time for each multimedia message sent. – Auto-retrieve : T ouch to enable or disable automatic retrieval of MMS messages. When enabled, MMS messages download automatically .
Messaging 73 Gmail Send and receive emails using Gmail, Google’s web-based email. Press Home ➔ Apps ➔ Gmail . Configuring Y our Gmail Account Set up your Google account to synchronize contacts, calendars, and allow access to Gmail. (For more informa tion, refer to “Adding a Google account” on page 52.

Connections 83 Section 7: Connection s W i-Fi Wi-Fi is a wireless networking technolog y that provides access to local area networks . Wi-Fi communication requires acces s to an existing Wi -Fi network. Wi-Fi networks can be Open (unsecured), or Secured (requiring you to provide login credentials).
84 Scanning and Connecting to a Wi-Fi Netw ork 1. T urn Wi-Fi on (see “T urning Wi-Fi On” on page 83). Y our phone s cans for available hotspots and pops -up a list of any it finds. 2. T o connect to a hotspot, touch it on t he pop-up list. • If the Wi-Fi network is o pen, you will be autom atically connected.
