Assembling 13 Charge the ba tter y Y our device has a built-in battery . Befor e using the device for the first time or when the batt er y has been unused for an extended period, you must char ge the batter y . Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers . Unauthorised chargers can cause batteries t o explode or damage your device.
Assembling 14 Connecting the USB cable improperly may cause serious damage to the device or USB pow er adapter . Any damage caused b y misuse is not cov ered by the warrant y . Plug the USB pow er adapter into a pow er outlet. 2 Y ou can use the device while it is charging , but it may ● take longer to fully charge the batt er y .
Assembling 15 T o save energy , unplug the USB power adapter when not in use. The USB power adapt er does not have a power swit ch, so you must unplug the USB pow er adapter from the electrical socket when not in use to avoid w asting power . The device should r emain close to the electrical socket while charging.
Assembling 16 Open the cov er of the memor y card slot. 1 Inser t a memor y card with the gold- coloured contacts 2 facing down. Push the memory card in the memor y card slot until it 3 locks in place. Close the memor y card cov er . 4 Remov e the memor y card › Before r emoving a memory card, first unmount it f or safe remov al.
Assembling 17 F ormat the memory card › F ormatting your memory card on a PC may cause incompatibilities with y our device. F or mat the memor y card only on the device. Open the application list and select Settings → S tor age → F ormat SD card → F ormat SD card → Er ase ev er ything .

23 Getting star ted Use the S P en and the touch screen Y our device ’ s touch screen lets you easily select items or per form functions. Learn basic actions for using the touch screen. Do not press the touch scr een with your fingertips, ● or use sharp tools on the touch screen.

25 Getting star ted Get to know the Home screen When the device is in Idle mode , you will see the Home screen. F r om the Home screen, you can view indicat or icons, widgets, shortcuts to applications, and other it ems. Scroll left or right to a panel of the Home screen.

27 Getting star ted Add a widget on the Home scr een › Widgets ar e small applications that pro vide conv enient functions and information on your Home scr een. 29 Getting star ted T o display two differ ent Multi W indow applications side ● by side in full screen, select Dual view . Y ou can switch the positions of the two applications by tapping and holding an application ’ s title bar , and then dragging it on the other application.

34 Getting star ted Adjust the brigh tness of the display › Y our device includes a light sensor , which can detect the level of ambient light and adjust the brightness of the displa y automatically . Y ou can also manually set the brightness of the display .
35 Getting star ted › Set a screen lock Y ou can lock your device by activating the scr een lock featur e. Once you set a scr een lock, your device will requir e ● an unlock code each time you turn it on or unlock the touch screen. If you for get your PIN or passwor d, bring your devic e ● to a Samsung Ser vice Centr e to reset it.
36 Getting star ted Set a face and v oice rec ognition unlock Open the application list and select 1 Settings → L o ck screen → Screen lock → F ace and v oice . Select 2 Nex t → Set it up → C ontinue . Adjust the device t o fit your face inside the figur e.
37 Getting star ted Set an unlock pattern Open the application list and select 1 Settings → L o ck screen → Screen lock → P att ern . See the on-screen instructions and example patterns and 2 select N ex t . Draw a patt ern by dragging y our finger to connect at least 3 4 dots and select Continue .
38 Getting star ted Enter t ext Y ou can enter text by selecting characters on the vir tual keypad, inputting handwriting on the screen, or speaking wor ds into the microphone . Y ou cannot enter text in some languages. T o enter text, you should change the writing language to one of the suppor ted languages.

Using special features 43 Learn motions Built-in motion rec ognition provides y ou with enhanced contr ols. Y ou can per form actions by moving your devic e or per forming gestures with your hands . T o use some of these func tions, you must first activate the motion recog nition featur e.

T o enter an address fr om your contact list or starred places, or poin t the location on the map , select → an option.

Communication 76 C ommunica tion Google Mail Y ou can retrieve new email messages fr om Google Mail ™ to your Inbo x. When you ac cess this application, the Inbox screen appears . The t otal number of unread messages displays in the title bar and unr ead messages display in bold.

84 Entertainment Play music › After transf erring music files to your device or memory card, Open the application list and select 1 Music Play er . Select a music categor y 2 → a music file. T ap the music player field. 3 Contr ol playback with the virtual keys.
85 Entertainment Crea te a playlist › Open the application list and select 1 Music Play er . Select 2 → Ne w playlist . Enter a title f or your new playlist and select 3 OK . T o add music files to the playlist, select 4 next to the music files. T o delete music files from the playlist, select next to the music files.

106 Entertainment Inser t a sound effec t to a video › Open the application list and select 1 V ideo Editor . Drag the thumbnail to place in the black dott ed line at the 2 desired point. Select 3 Sound effects → a sound option. Select 4 → Save .
