Getting Started 1 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section describes the firs t steps to operating your phone. SIM Card Infor mation When you subscribe for 3G cellular network services, you receive a plug-in SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card loaded with your subscription details, such as your PIN, and available optional services.

Getting Started 3 Installing the microSD™ Car d T o add additional memory to your phone, you can insert a microSD card into the memory card slot, lo c ated to the left of the SIM card, inside the phone. Use the following instructions and illustrations for proper insertion and removal.
4 Replaci ng the Batter y 1. T o reinstall the battery , with the battery cover open, align the battery tabs with the slots at the bo ttom of the phone (1). 2. Press the battery down until it clicks into place (2). Make sure the battery is properly installed before replacing the cover .
Getting Started 5 Char ging the Battery Y our phone is powered by a rechargeable Li-ion battery . Use the travel adapter to charge the battery , and use only Samsung approved batteries and chargers. Note: Y ou must fully charge the battery before using your phone for the first time.
6 T ur ning the Phone On or Off 1. Open the phone. 2. Press and hold the key until the phone power-on screen displays. Note: Do not turn on the phone when mobile phone use is prohib ited. 3. If the phone asks, enter the password and press the Confirm soft key or the key .

8 Section 2: Understanding Y our Phone This section outlines some key f eatures of your phone. It also displays the screen and the icons that are displayed when the phone is in use. F eatures of Y our Phone Y our phone is lightweight, easy-to-use and offers many significant features.
Understanding Y our Phone 9 Ke y s The following list correlates to the open and front view illustrations. 1. Main Display : This screen displays us eful information needed to operate your phone. 2. Navigation keys : This key allows you to scroll through phone menu options and provides a shortcut to pho ne functions from standby mode.
10 11 . Power On/Off/Menu Exit key : Ends a call. Press and hold this key for a few seconds to power your phone On or Off. While in the main menu, it returns the phone to standby mode and cancels your input. When you receive an incoming call, press to reject call.
Understanding Y our Phone 1 1 press and hold to toggle the display on or of f. If you are playing music and the backli ght goes out, press to re- display the music player screen. 3. Camera/Camcorder : Allows you to take pictures and videos with your phone.
12 Icons Shows the received signal strength. The greater the number of bars, the stronger the signal. Displays the level of your battery . The more bars you see, the more power you have remaining. Displays when the phone is accessing services in a GPRS network.
Understanding Y our Phone 13 Note: The default p hone profile is Normal. The p rofile is edit able and the displayed ic ons may vary according to th e setting. My Menu Y our phone offers a set of functi ons that can be customized for your ease and specific needs.

Understanding Y our Phone 15 Right Soft Key Some functions of the right soft key are as follows. • In the Idle screen, press the My Menu (right) soft key to open the My Menu screen.
16 Section 3: Menu Naviga tion This section explains the menu nav igation for your phone. It also includes an outline of all the available menus associated with your phone. Some menu options are controlled by the SIM provided by your service provider .
Menu Navigation 17 Using Shortcut Numbers Numbered menu items, such as menus, sub-menus, and options can be quickly accessed by using their shortcut numbers. In Menu mode, Main Menus can be accessed by pressing the number keys (1 to 0, * and #) corresponding to their location on the screen.
18 Section 4: Call Functions This section describes how to make or answer a call. It also includes the features and functionality associated wi th making or answering a call. Making a Call When the Idle screen displays, enter the area code and phone number , and press the key .
Call Functions 19 Manu al Paus e Dialing When you call automated systems, y ou are often required to enter a password or account number . Instead of manually entering the numbers each time, you can dial th e numbers along with special characters called pauses.
20 Answ ering a Call When you receive a call, the phone rings and displays the caller’s phone number , or name if stored in Contacts. 1. From the Idle Screen press the key .
Call Functions 21 • Send Message : allows you to send a T ext or Multi media message to the caller. • Delete : allows you to delete the Select ed call or All calls. • Add to Reject List : allows you to add the sending number to your Rej ect List.
22 3. At the Create Message screen, use the Alphanumeric keys to type a message or press the In sert soft key to add items such as Picture, Video, Sound, T emplates, Emoticon, T ake Picture, Record Video, Record Sound, Favourite s URL, or Contact Info.
Call Functions 23 – hh:mm:ss : shows the duration of the call in hours, minutes, and seconds. Call Back T o call back a missed call number: 1. Press the View soft key. The most recently missed call displays. 2. Scroll through the list of missed calls.
24 Press Options soft key , highlight New call and press the Select soft key or the key . Once connected, both calls display on the screen. Note: The caller curren tly on hold displ ays as greyed text on th e screen. When you are engaged in an active call and also have a call on hold, you may switch between the two calls.
Call Functions 25 – Calendar : T emporarily accesses your calendar while maintaining the active ca ll. – Memo : T emporarily accesses your memos while maintaining the active ca ll. – Whisper Mode On/Off : Increases the microphone sensitivity level.
26 T o switch the microphone off temporarily with a single active call: 1. Press the Mute soft key . 2. Press the Unmute soft key to switch the microphone back on. T o switch the microphone off temporarily with one active call and one on hold, or , one active call with Video Share enabled.
Call Functions 27 3-Way C alling (Multi-Party Calling) The 3-Way or Multi-Party feature allows you to answer a series of incoming calls and place them o n hol d. If this service is supported by the network, all calls can be joined together . Y ou are notified of an incoming call by a call waiting tone.
28 Section 5: Entering T e xt This section outlines how to select the desired text input mode when entering characters into your phone. It also describes how to use the T9 predictive text entry system to reduce the number of key strokes associated with entering text.
Entering T ex t 29 Changing the T ex t Input Mode When you are in a field that holds characters (such as in a text message), the text input mode indicator displays. Use the following steps to change the text input mode: 1. T o change the text input mode, press the key .
30 The word that you are typing displays on the screen. The word changes as you press additional keys. 3. Enter the whole word before editing or deleting the keystrokes. 4. When the word displays correctly , go to step 5. If the word doesn’t display correctly , press the key to display alternative word choices.
Entering T ex t 31 Note: The cursor moves to th e right when you press a different key . When entering the sa me letter twic e or a diffe rent letter on t he same key , just wait for a f ew seconds for the cur sor to move to the ri ght automati cally , and then se lect the ne xt letter.
32 Section 6: Contacts This section allows you to manage your contacts by storing their name and number in Contacts. Y ou can sort Address contact entries by name, entry , or group.

Contacts 35 Finding a Contacts E ntr y Y ou can store phone numbers and their corresponding names onto your SIM card and phone’s onboard memory . The two locations are physically separate but are used as a single entity , called Contacts.
36 Set FDN Mode . 2. Select On to enable fixed dialing or Off to disable the option and press Save . 3. Enter the PIN2 code if you selected On . Important! : With Fixed Dia l Mode enabled, you are NOT able to dial any number other tha n those created as FDN numbers.
Contacts 37 10. Press Back to return to Contacts. 11 . Press to return to Idle mode. Adding an Entr y to a Group 1. In Idle mode, press Contacts Groups . 2. Highlight a group entry and press the key . 3. Press Options Add Member , then press the key .
38 Using the Ser vice Dialing Numbers Y ou can view the list of Service Dialing Numbers ( SDN) assigned by your service provider . These numbers may include emergency numbers, customer service numbers, and directory inqui ries. 1. In Idle mode, press Contacts Service Numbers and press the key .
Contacts 39 3. Repeat Step 3 for each entry you want to copy to the Phone or highlight All and press the key to place a checkmark alongside all entries. 4. Press Copy . 5. Press to return to Idle mode. Deleti ng a Co ntact s Entr y Y ou can delete a Phone or SIM entry from your phone’s memory .
40 • Additional No. 2 : if you have added additional numbers to contacts saved on the SIM card, this is a counter of the number of SIM contacts with a third number sa ved on your SIM card. •E m a i l : tells you how many entries are in use. • FDN Contact s : tells you how many entries are in use on your FDN SIM memory .
My Account 41 Section 7: My Account My Account allows you to manage your account from your phone’s browser . Y ou can use it to view your airtime, data, messaging, and roaming usage. Y ou may also be able to see account balances, pay your bill, change services, and reset your voicemail password.
42 Section 8: Music Play er The Music Player is an application that can play music files. The music player supports files with extensions AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, MP3, WMA, 3GP , MPEG, MP4, and M4A. Launching Music Player allows you to navigate within your Music folders and select playback material.
Music Player 43 • Pause/Resume : pauses or resumes playing the song when pressed. • T ransfer to Bluetooth Headset : transfers the selected music file to a Bluetooth headset. • Hide Player : continues to play the musi c but hides the player in the background.

46 4. Highlight the track to delete, press the Options soft key , scroll to Remove and press the Select soft key or the key . 5. At the Remove <title of song>? prompt press the Ye s soft key to remove the song from the playlist, or press the No soft key to cancel.

From the Windows Media Play er application, in the upper-left corner of the screen, under Playlists, drag and drop the SGH-a847R playlist to the Sync list on the lower-right portion of the screen and press the Start Sync button. The playlist sync hronizes to the SGH-a847R handset.
48 T rans fer ring Mu sic us ing a Me dia Appl ication A USB cable, microSD card, and a current version of a media application (such as Windows Media Pla yer) are required for this procedure. Important! : For this p rocedure to work y ou must d isable B luetooth ( see “Activation” on page 104.
Internet 49 Section 9: Inter net Y our phone includes a W AP (Wireless Application Protocol) browser that allows wireless access and navigation of the Web using your phone. Acce ssing t he Br owser T o access the Web browser: When the Idle screen displays, press the Internet soft key (or Intern et ).
50 – History : Lists all recently viewed URLs. – Send URL via : sends the currently viewed URL to a recipient in a message or via Bluetooth. – Save : lets you save an Image or Web Page.
Internet 51 Editing Book marks 1. From the Bookmarks list, hig hlight the bookmark you want to change and press Options Edit . 2. Edit the Title and URL as required. 3. Press the Save soft key . Delet ing a Bookmar k 1. From the Bookmarks list, hig hlight the bookmark you want to change and press Options Delete Selected.
52 Section 10: Messages This section describes how to send or recei ve different types of messages. It also includes the features and functionality associated with messages.
Messages 53 • Sound : allows you to attach an audio clip to your message. • T emplates : allows you to attach a template to your message. •E m o t i c o n : allows you to add an em oticon (created by phone characters) to your message. An example would be:-) to signify a happy face.
54 9. Y ou can add additional recipients from Contacts by selecting one of the Empty fields and entering another number . – or – Select another Empty field and press Options Add Recipients and choose between Recent Contacts , Contacts , or Group and press the key .
Messages 55 • Favourites URL : allows you to temporarily exit the message, access your Favorites list then select those URLs you would like to add to the current message. • Contact Info : allows you to choose an existing Contacts entry , then add it to your message.
56 • Press Options Back to return to the message. 10. Press the Send soft key to send the message. Attach a Business Card to a Message T o attach your Business Card to an outgoing message, follow these steps: 1. Create a contact entry containi ng your own information (the information stored in the entry is used as a business card).
Messages 57 Retrieving a T e xt Messa ge fr om the I nbo x When a new T ext message comes in, the display (in Idle mode) shows a new Message notification icon ( ) along with the available sender’s information. 1. In Idle mode, press Messages Inbox and press the Select soft key or the key .
58 Using Message Options Message options at the Inbox level differ according to what action was taken with the message. While viewing the list of messages in the Inbox, press the Options soft key to access the following message options: Options for SMS Messages • Reply : allows you to reply to the message via T ext message.
Messages 59 In Idle mode, press Menu Messages Sent and press the Select soft key or the key. Outbo x This message box contains me ssages that will be sent. When you enter this menu, the li st of messages in the Outbox displays with the recipients’ phone numbers or names, if available in Contacts.
60 V oicemail This option allows you to access your voicemai l. Note: These steps may be different dep ending on your networ k. Accessing Y our V oicema il 1. In Idle mode, press Messages V oicemail and press the Select soft key or the key.

Media 65 Section 11: Media The Media menu is used to m anage your media files (audio, pictures, videos and other files). Media files are organized in a series of folders. Y ou can also create additional folders or sub-folders to further organi ze your files.
66 Pictures Folder O ptions If you enter the Pictures fol der using the menus, and press the Options soft key before selecting an existing graphic, the following options are available: • Download : allows you to download a graphic. • T a ke Photo : allows you t o take a photo with your camera.
Media 67 • Move : lets you move Selected or Multi ple files to a different storage location. • Copy : lets you copy Selected or Multiple files t o a different stor age location.
68 – Pictures: Shows amount of memory used t o store photos. – Videos: Shows amount of memory used to store video clips. 3. T o view the contents of a folder , use the Up and Down navigation keys to highlight a folder you wish to view, then press the Select soft key or the key.
Games & Applications 69 Section 12: Games & Applications Games The Games menu option allows you to access games that are on the phone and also shop for games. Y ou can download new games and then save them to the Games & Apps folder . 1. Press Games & Apps .
70 Section 13: T ools The T ools application provides access to and allows you to use the Camera, V oice Recognition, Record Audio, Alarms, Calendar T asks, Memo, Calculator , T ip Calculator , Converter (for Currency , Length, Weight, V olume, Area, and T emperature), World Clock, Timer , and Stopwatch.
T ools 71 Speak clearly when giving your command. There is no need for you to speak slowly or with added emphasis. The voice recognition software has been optimized to understand your speech in its natural form. If it does not re cognize your command after a few seconds, a voice prompt asks you to repeat the command.

74 Calendar The calendar feature allows you to view the calendar in Month, Week, and Day layout views. Y ou can also c reate Appointment, Anniversary , Holiday , Important, or Private entries. It also shows any Missed Alarm Events that have occurred. T o access the Calender menu, use th e following steps: 1.
T ools 75 • Start Time : enter a time for this appointme nt. Use the Right Navigation key to select AM or PM for the start time of the scheduled event. • End Date : enter a date for this appointment to end. • End Time : enter a time for this appointment to end.
76 • Repeat Every Y ear : allows you to set whether this entry is repeated on a yearly basis. Press the key to select this option. 4. Press the key to save this new anniversary entry . Note: The remaining Calendar en try types ( Holiday , Important , or Private entries) cont ain similar field s and use similar crea tion procedures .
T ools 77 View (one week at a time), Month V iew (one month at a time), or Day View (one day at a time). • Create : this option allows you to add an additional event to the selected day(s). • Send via : this option allows you to send a listing of the event via a Multimedia message or via Bluetooth.
78 Memo This option allows you to create and save memos. T o create a memo: 1. In Idle mode, press To o l s and press the Select soft key or the key . 2. Highlight Memo and press the Select soft key or the key . 3. Press the Options soft key . Highlight Create , and press the Select soft key or the key .

82 Section 14: Camera Using the Camera T aking Photos 1. In Idle mode, press and hold the Camera key on the left side of the phone – or – Press T ools Camera and press the Select soft key or the key .
Camera 83 Shooting mo de : allows you to set the shooting mode. Options are: • Sing le Shot : allows you to take a single photo and view it before returning to the shooting mode. • Mult i-Shot : allows you to take a series of photos in quick succession.
84 Camera Options afte r T aking a Photo After you have taken a photo, you can us e various options by pressing the Options soft key . Highlight an option and press the key . The following options are available: • Send : allows you to attach the photo to a message, send it to Online Album, or send it via Blueto oth.
Camera 85 • Delete : allows you to delete Selected or Mult iple files. • Rename : allows you to rename the select ed file. • Move : allows you to move e ither a Selected or Mul tiple files to a differ ent folder. • Copy : allows you to make a copy of the Selected or Mul tiple files.
86 – Print vi a : allows you to print the pho to using a USB or Blu etooth connection. – Properties : allows you to view the properties of a photo.
Camera 87 Following is a list of the Camcorder icons: Camcorder mode : allows you to switch from taking a photo to shooting a video clip usin g the camera’s camcorder mode. Shooting mo de : allows you to set the shooting mode. Options are: • Normal : records video clip in Normal mode.
88 Camcorder Options afte r a Video is T aken After you have shot a video, press the O ptions soft key to select various options. Highlight an option and press the key . The following options are available: • Send via : allows you to attach the video to a Multimedia Message, send it to Online Album, or send it to a Bluetooth device.
Camera 89 • Copy : allows you to copy a selected or multiple videos. • Record Video : allows you to shoot a video with your camcorder . • Create Folder : allows you to create a fol der within the Video folder.
90 Section 15: Changing Y our Settings This section includes procedures on how to use some of use some of your phone’s features, as well as how to change and customize the display settings, call handling, security settings, and other settings associated with your phone.
Changing Y our Settings 91 • Vibration and Melody : the phone vibrates and also plays the melody . • Mute : the phone neither vibrates nor plays a ringtone. The only indication of a message is an alert on the display . – Message Alert T one : allows you select the tone played on receipt of a message.
92 Note: The Silent prof ile can also be act ivated by pressing and holding the key or by reducing th e volume to 0. An on screen message notifies you that the Silen t profile is now ac tive. T o deactivat e this profile , press and hold the key again or increase the volume using the volume key.
Changing Y our Settings 93 Medium , or Small . Press the Save soft key or the key to confirm your selection. – Font Colour : allows you to select a colour f or the selected font . Press the Left or Right Navigation keys to make your selection. Choose from Monochrome , Gradation , or Basic .
94 Light Settings Note: Light settin gs can affect the lengt h of time before battery recharge is necessary . • Brightness : allows you to adjust the display br ightness for the LCD to see it better in different lig hting conditions. Press the Left or Right Navigation keys t o adjust the brightness.
Changing Y our Settings 95 • Date Format : allows you to change the date format. Use the Left or Right Navigation key to select between the different options. Press the Save soft key to confirm the selection. Note: Automatic up dates of time and date do n ot change th e time set for a larm settings or calendar m emos.
96 Shor tcuts The Shortcuts option allows you to change the applications assigned to your Navigation keys. 1. Press a Navigation key and press the Options soft key . 2. Highlight Change and press the . Select a new application to assign to the navigation key .
Changing Y our Settings 97 phone without your approval. The PIN is usually supplied wi th the SIM card. The following options are available: – On : you must enter the PIN each time the phone is switched on. – Off : the phone connects d irectly to the network when you switch it on.
98 Change Security Code This option allows you to change y our current Security Code to a new one. Once you enter a new code, you are asked to confirm it by entering it again. Change PIN Code This option allows you to change y our current PIN, provided that the PIN Check feature is enabled.
Changing Y our Settings 99 Re store Phone The Restore Phone option is similar to the Re set Phone option described above in that all settings are reset to factory defaults. However , with the Restore Phone option, all user data is deleted. War ni ng! : All User Data such as contacts, messages , pictures, videos , and music is deleted.
100 Calls This menu allows you to change the actions taken by the phone when dialing and receiving calls. In Idle mode, press Settings Calls and press the Select soft key or the key .
Changing Y our Settings 101 • Call End T one : allows you to activate an alert tone that sounds when a call is ended. 2. Press the Save soft key when finished. Aler ts On Call This feature allows you to activate an alert tone for new messages being received during an active call.
