7 INSTALL ATION IN S TAL LING THE BACKUP BAT TERY The T AD-1026’s answering system re- quires A C pow er to operate. Howe ver, if AC power fails or you unplu g the TAD, a 9V backup b attery (not sup plied) saves the messag es and the settings for the day, tim e, and security code.
8 wiring for y ou. T he USOC number of the jack to be installed is RJ1 1C, or RJ11W for a wall plate jack. Cautio n : The supplied adapter supplies 9 volts AC, delivers at least 400 milli- amps, and has a plug which properly fits the T AD ’ s DC 9V jack.
9 On a W all Plate 1. Plug one end of the suppli ed short modul ar cord into the TEL . LINE jack on t he top of the T AD. 2. Route the cord into th e groove on the phone’s base. 3. Position the phone’s bas e close to the wall plate and plug the other end of the short modu lar cord into the wall plate jack.
10 Direct ly on a W all For this mounting method, you need two flat-head wood sc rews (not supplied) with heads that fit into the k eyhole slots on the bottom of the TAD. 1. D rill tw o hole s 3 15 / 16 inches (100 mm) apart. Then thread a screw (not supplied) into each hole letti ng the h eads extend about 3 / 16 of an inch (5mm) from the wall.
11 1. Set T/P to T . 2. Lift the hands et and listen for a dial tone. 3. Press any number other than 0. Note: If your phone syst em requires that y ou dial an ac cess code ( 9 , for example ) before yo u dial an outs ide numbe r , do not press the access code either .
12 2. T o change the day of the week, re- peatedly press MEMO to mov e backward or CODE to mo ve f or- ward until the T A D announces the desired day of t h e week. 3. Press STOP/T- SET . The T AD a n- nounces the hour . 4. T o change the hour , repeatedly press MEMO to move backwar d or CODE to move forwa rd to t he desired hour .

17 Dialin g a St ored N umb er To di al a number s tored in m emory, lift the h andset and do o ne of the following: • For priority memory num bers, press M1 , M2 , or M3 for the number you want to dial. • For indirect mem ory numbers, press MEMORY .
18 ANSWE RIN G SY ST EM OP ERAT I ON RECORDING T HE OUTGOING MESSAGES Before you can set the TAD to answer calls and record messages, you must record the outgoing me ssage (OG M) the caller hears when the TAD a nswers a call.
19 Importa nt : Do no t tell caller s tha t you a r e not home. Instead, say that you can not come to t he phone righ t now . 3. W hen you f inish recording, pres s STOP/T-SET. The T AD automat ically plays back the outgoin g message. To pl ay back y our outgoing OGM1 mes- sage at an y time, pres s OGM1 .
20 SETTI NG T HE T AD TO ANSWER CALLS T o Answ er and Record To turn on the T AD-1026’s answering syste m and set it to answer cal ls and record mess ages, pr ess ANSW ER once. The T AD beeps, b rief ly d isplays On , and the ANSW ER indicator lights.
21 If the TAD’s me mor y is fu ll ( FL appears), the TAD answers the call after 8 rings and pl ays the a nnouncem ent-only mes- sage (OGM2 ). SCREENING CALLS To screen calls, let the TAD answer them , then list en to the caller’s message through the TAD’s speaker.
22 To play on ly new messages, hol d down PLAY for 2 seconds. (If there are n o new messages stored, t he TAD says, “You have no new messages.”) To adjust the volume , r otate VOLUME on the side of the TA D. After all messag es play, the TAD s ays, “End of m essage(s)” an d saves all the messag es.
23 To delete all messages, hold do wn DE- LETE while playback is stopped. The TAD soun ds a l o ng beep and dL ap- pears. T he TAD deletes all mes sages except t hose that hav e not been played . RECORDING A MEMO A m emo is a message you can record by spea k ing di rectly into the TAD, without having to call in on the phone.
24 To play back a recorded call, simpl y play back your messa ges. USING CALL BREAK - THR OU GH If you screen your calls but want to be sure to know when calls come in from certain peop le, give those p eople yo ur call breakthrou gh (CBT) code. Tell them to enter the code d uring the outgoing messag e.
25 CHA NGING THE REMOTE OP E RA TION SECURITY CODE The remote operation sec urity code is preset t o 784, but you can c hange it by following these steps. Note : Be sure to set each digi t wi t hin 8 second s. Otherwise, you must start over fr o m St ep 1.
26 REMOTE OPERATIO N You can operate the T AD-1026’s a n- swering system f rom almost any touch- tone phone , or from a rotary ph one using a pocket ton e-dial er (available at your lo- cal RadioShack store). Notes : • When the memory is f ull, the T AD answers the call after eight rings and plays the anno uncem ent-only messag e (OGM 2).
27 USIN G REMOT E COMMANDS To use t he remote c omm ands, you m ust enter the remote operation security code within 8 seconds af ter the TAD ans wers the call. After the TAD b eeps once to verify you entered the code correc t ly , enter the number(s) for the function(s) you want the TAD to perform.

RESETTI NG T HE T AD If your TAD stops working properl y, rem ove the AC ad apte r and the bat tery from the TAD, then reinstall t hem.
