Introduction 6 Exp anding your phone The KX-TG5871AL includes one handset and one ba se unit. Y ou can expand the system by adding up to 7 accessory handsets, sold separately . A maximum of 8 ha ndsets can be registered to a base unit. Any combination of the 2 available accessory handsets is possible.
Introduction 7 A vailable accessory h andsets 2 accessory handset models are available for the KX-TG5871AL. Operations and features of 2 different accessory handsets have certain differences as indicated in the table below .
Introduction 8 Import ant safety instructions When using this unit, basic safety precautions should always be followed to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, or personal injury . 1. Read and understand all instructions. 2. Follow all warnings and instru ctions marked on this unit.
Introduction 9 L Do not touch the plug with wet hands. L The AC adaptor is used as the main disconnect device. Ensure that the AC outlet is installed near the unit and is easily accessible. L T o p revent the electric shock, use only the included audio cable with the transformer when conne cting the unit to an audio device.

Preparation 11 Connections Note: L Use only the included Panasonic AC adaptor PQL V1AL. L The AC adaptor must rema in connected at all times. (It is normal for the adaptor to feel warm during use.) L The AC adaptor should be connected to a vertically ori ented or floo r-mounted AC outlet.
Preparation 12 If you subscribe to an ADSL service L Please attach a noise filter (contact your ADSL provider) to the telephone lin e between the base unit and the telepho ne line jack in the event of the fo llowing: – Noise is heard during conversations.
Preparation 13 Battery charge Place the handset on the base unit for 6 hours before initia l use. L The unit will beep once, the CHARGE indicator will lig ht, and “ Charging ” will be displayed. L “ Charge completed ” is displayed when the battery h as been fully charged.
Preparation 14 Battery replacement If battery performance diminishes, make sure you have cleane d the charge contacts and fully charged the battery . The battery needs to be replaced if any of the following are displayed after a few phone calls even when you have fully charged the battery .

Making/Answering Calls 22 Clarity booster This feature can improve sound clarity when the handset is used in an area where there may be interference. During an outside call, this feature will be turned on automatically when necessary . This feature will turn off when you hang up or put a call on hold.

Making/Answering Calls 24 Call share When another extension is on an outside call, this feature al lows you to join th at call. T o join a conversation, press { SP- PHONE } when another extension i s on an outside call. L A maximum of 4 parties including the outside party can join a conversation.
Making/Answering Calls 25 Answering calls using the base unit When a call is being received, the IN USE indicator flashes rapidly . 1 Press { SP-PHONE } . 2 Speak into the MIC. 3 When finished talking, press { SP- PHONE } . Adjusting the ringer volume 4 levels (high/medium/low/off) are available.
Phonebook 26 Handset phonebook The handset phonebook all ows you to make calls without havin g to dial manually . Y ou can add 50 names and phone numbers to the handset phone book and search for phonebook en tries by name. Important: L KX-TGA582AL only: Y ou can also create and edit phoneb ook items using your PC and send them to the handset.
Phonebook 27 Character table The dial keys can be used to enter characters. T o enter a character, press the appropriate dial key , repeatedly if necessary . T o enter anoth er character that is located on the same dial key , first push the joystick right to move the cursor to the next space.
Phonebook 28 Adding items/calling someone in the phonebook using the unit’ s menu P (Monochro me display models only) Important: L Only the KX-TG5871AL and KX- TGA580AL support this feature. Monochrom e display model users can also enter the phonebook from the handset’s main menu.
Phonebook 29 Chain dial feature This feat ure allows you to dial phone numbers from the phonebook while you are on a call. Example: Using a long distance calling card 1 Dial from the phonebook: 08000123456 (Calling card access number). 2 When prompted, dial from the phonebook: 1234 (Calling card PIN).
Phonebook 30 7 Press { OFF } . Copying all i tems 1 Press { C } (right soft key). 2 Press { COPY } . 3 Scroll to “ All items ”, then press { SELECT } . 4 Scroll to the d estination handset’ s number, then press { SEND } . L When all items h ave been copied, “ Complete ” will be displayed.
Speed Dialler 31 Base unit speed dialler The base unit speed dialler all ows you to make calls without havin g to dial manually . Y ou can assign one phone number to each of the 10 dial keys ( { 0 } to { 9 } ) on the base unit.
Caller ID Service 32 Using Caller ID service This unit is Caller ID compatible. T o use Caller ID features, you must subscribe to your telephone company’s Caller ID service. Caller I D features When an outside call is being receive d, the calling party’ s phone numb er will be displayed.
Caller ID Service 33 T alking Caller ID This featu re allows you to kno w who is calling without looking at the display . When a call comes in, the handset and b ase unit will announce the caller ’ s name displayed on the handset following every ring.
Caller ID Service 34 Ringer ID and light-up ID This feature can help you identify who is calling by using different ringers and rin ger indicator colours for different callers stored in the phonebook. Y ou can assign a different ringer and indicator colour to ea ch phonebook item.
Caller ID Service 35 1 Press { C } (right soft key). 2 Push the joystick up or down repeatedly to display the desired item. 3 Press { OPTION } . 4 Press { 3 } to select “ Picture ID ”. 5 To select a preset picture, scroll to “ Fixed data ”, then press { SELECT } .

Intercom Feature s 37 Intercom Intercom calls can be made betwe en the handset and the base unit, and between the included handset and a compatible Panasonic handset (page 5). Call the desired unit by selecting th e extension number ( ! to ) ), shown in the upper right of each ha ndset’s display .
Intercom Feature s 38 V oice p aging The base unit user can make a voice announcement that is heard through the speakers of all handsets. 1 Press { INTERCOM } , then press {*} ( A ). L Y ou will hear a ringb ack tone (2 short beeps) and the SP-PHONE indicator will flash.
Intercom Feature s 39 call will ring at your handset agai n. If you still do not answer the call within 4 minutes, the call will be disconnected . T ransferring a call from the base unit Important: L When you page all handsets, only the handset user who an swers first can take the transferred call.
Intercom Feature s 40 Conference calls A conference call allows the handset and the base unit or a compatible Panasonic handset (page 5) to speak together with an outside party . Using the handset 1 During an outsi de call, press { INTERCOM } . L The call will be put on hold.
Intercom Feature s 41 Room monitor This feature allows you to listen in on a room where the handset or base unit is located. The monitored exten sion will not ring, allowing you to easily monitor , for example, a baby’s room from different areas of the house.

Programmable Settings 59 Registering the handset If you want to use the handset with a different base unit of the same model, register it to that base unit. The handset will be given a new extension n umber of that base unit. Important: L Before registering, make sure the base unit and the other handsets are not being used.
Answering System Features 60 Answering system The unit contains an answering system which can answer and record calls for you when you are unava ilable to answer the phone. Erasing your greeting message Press { GREETING CHECK } , and then press { ERASE } while your greeting message is playing. Answering System Features 68 Ring count Y ou can change the number of times the phone rings before the uni t answers calls. Y ou can select 2 to 7 rings or “ Toll saver ”. “ Toll saver ”: The unit answers on the 2nd ring when new messages have been recorded, and on the 4th ring whe n there are no new messages.
