Insert the SIM ca rd and battery Note: Switch off the power and disconnect the charg er and any other dev ice before removing the cov ers. Avoid tou ching electronic com ponents while cha nging the covers. Always store and use the de vice with the covers attached.
3 Line up the battery con tacts, and insert the battery. Replace the back cover. Insert and remove the memory card Use only compatible microSD cards approved by Nokia for use with this device. Nokia uses approved industry st andards for memory cards, but some brands may not be fully compatible with this device.
Your device supports microSD cards with a ca p a c i t y o f u p t o 8 G B . T h e s i z e o f a s i n g l e file must not exceed 2 GB. Insert the memory card 1 Open the cover of the memory c ard slot. 2 Insert the card into the memory card slot wit h the contact surfa ce facing down, and press until it locks into place.
Charge the b attery Your battery has been partially charged at the factory. If the device indicates a low charge, do the following: 1 Connect the charge r to a wall outlet. 2 Connect the charger to the device. 3 When the device indicates a full charge, disconnect the charger from the device, then from the wall outlet.
GSM antenna Your device may have internal and ext ernal antennas. Avoid touching the antenna area unnecessarily while the anten na is transmitting or receiving. Contact with antennas affects t he communication qu ality and may cause a higher power level during operation and may reduce the battery life.
Open the cover of the USB connector, an d connect the USB cable to the device. Headset Warning: When you use the headset, your ability to hear outside sounds may be affected.

Network services To use the device you must have servic e from a wireless service provider. Some features are not availa ble on all networks; other feat ures may require that you make specific arrangements with your service provider to use them. Network services involve transmission of data .

Software updates using your PC Nokia Software Updater is a PC application that enables you t o update your device software. To update your device softwa re, you need a compatible PC, broadband internet access, and a compatible USB data cable to connect your device to th e PC.
Software upd ate settings This option may not be availa ble, depending on your phone. To allow or disallow automati c software update s, select Menu > Settings > Phone > Phone updates > Aut omatic SW upda te .
Basic settings Phone settings Select Menu > Settings and Phone . Select from the following: Language settings — To set the language of your device, select Phone language and a language. To set the lang uage of your device according to the information on the SIM card, select Phone language > Automatic .

Rename or deactivate a voice command Scroll to a function, and select Options > Edit or Remove . Activat e or deacti vate all vo ice comm ands Select Options > Add all or Remov e all . Connect Your phone provides several features to connect to other devices to transmit and receive data.
To make calls, you must fi rst leave the remote SIM mode. If the device has been locked, enter the lock code to unlock it first. Open a Bluetoot h connection 1 Select Menu > Sett ings > Connectivity > Blue tooth . 2 Select My phone's name , and enter a name for your device.
To define how to use the s ervice, select Menu > Settings > Connectivit y > Packet data > P acket data conn. and from the following: When nee ded — Establish a packet data connection when needed by an application. The connection is closed when the application is closed.
Create backup — Create a backup of selected d ata. Restore backup — Select a stored backup file, and restore it to the device. Select Options > Details for information about the selected backup file. Data transfer — Synchronise or copy selected data between your device and another device, PC, or network server (network service).

SIM services Your SIM card may provide additional servic es. Yo u can access t his menu only if it is supported by your SIM card. The name an d contents of the menu depend on the available services. Accessing these services may involve send ing messages or maki ng a phone call for which you m ay be charged.
SIM messages SIM messages are specific text messages that are saved to your SIM card. You can copy or move those messages from the SIM to the phone mem ory, but not vice versa. To read SIM mess ages, select Menu > Messaging > Options > SIM messag es .
Make calls Make a voice call Dial a number manuall y Enter the phone number, including the area code, and press the cal l key. For international calls, press * twice for the international prefix (the .
Adjust the volume in a call Use the volume keys. Dialling shortcuts Assign a phone number to on e of the number keys, 2-9. See "Assign dialling shortcuts" , p. 29 . Use a dialling shortcut to make a call in one of t h e following ways: • Press a number key, then the call key.
During a call, select Options an d from the available options. Some of the network options are Hold , New call , Add to conference , End all calls , and the following: Send DTMF — to send to ne stri.
Call divert — Di v er t y ou r in co m in g ca ll s ( n et w or k s er v ic e) . Yo u m ay no t be ab le to divert your calls if some ca ll barring functions are active. Anykey answer — A n s w e r a n i n c o m i n g c a l l b y b r iefly pressing any key, except the power key, the left and right selection keys, or the end key.
When you write text , press and hold Option s to switch between tradition al text input, indicated by , and predictive text input, indicated by . Not all languages are supported by predictive text input. The character cases are indicated by , , and . To change the ch aracter case, press # .
• If the ? character is displayed after th e word, the word you intended to write is not in the dictiona ry. To add the wo rd to the dicti onary, select Spell . Enter the word using traditional text input, and select Save . • To write compound words, enter the fi rst part of the word, and scroll right to confirm it.
The wireless net work may limit the size of MMS m essages. If th e inserted pictu re exceeds this limit, the device may make it smaller so that it can be sent by MMS. Important: Exercise caution when opening messages. Messages may contain malicious software or otherwise be harmful to your device or PC.
View messages in a conversation 1 Select Conversation s . 2 Scroll to a conversation, and select Op en . 3 Scroll to a message and select Op tions > Open . Switch betw een Conversati ons and Inbox views Select Options > Inbox view or Conversation view .
To save the sent messages in the Sent items folder, select Menu > Messaging > Message settings > General s etting s > Save sent messages . The phone saves received messages in the Inbox folder. Organise your messages in the Saved items folder.
Text messages — Allow delivery reports, set up m essage centres for S MS and SMS e-mail, select t he type of charac ter suppor t, and set up other preferences related to text messages.
Create a new Nokia account To create a Nokia account , which includes mail and IM services, using your PC, visit www.ovi.com. To create an account usi ng your device, do the following: 1 Select Menu > Messaging > E-mail message . 2 Follow the instructions on the display.
When a new message arrives from another community , it is indicated at the top or bottom corner. Scroll up, and select Switch or Select . Notificat ion settings Even when you are not using the applicati on , you are notifi ed of new messages.
Set up mail You can sign in to an existin g mail account or set up a new Ovi Mail account. Select Menu > Messaging > E-mail message . Sign in to your mail account 1 Select your mail service provider. 2 Enter your account ID and password. 3 Select Remember password to disable the passwor d query when you access your mail account.
View and save attachments Mails with attach ments, for example, pict ures, are marked with a paperclip icon. Some attachments may not be compatible with your device, and can not be displayed on your device. 1 Expand the attachment list. 2 Select an attachment and View .
Image and video Capture images Activate the camera Press the capture key; or, if in video mode, scroll left or right. Zoom in or out In image mode, scroll up and down, or use the volume keys. Capture an image Press the capture key. Images are saved in Gallery.
Alternatively, press the capture key. Stop recording Select Stop . Video clips are saved in Gallery. Camera and video setti ngs Select Menu > Media > Camera . In image or video mode, select Options and from the following: Self-timer — Use the self-timer.
All photos — View im ages in a thumbnail gr id. You can sort images by date, name, or size. Timeline — View images in the order they were captured. Albums — Sort images into albums. You ca n create, rename a nd remove albums. If you remove an alb um, the images inside th e album are not deleted from the memory.
Select from the following: Videos — List all available video clips. All songs — List all available songs. You can sort song s by artist, album, or genre, for example. Manage folders and files To manage folders and fi les in Gallery, select Menu > Gallery .
Some of the folders in Gallery that contain content used by your device (for example, Themes) can be stored on the memory card. If your memory card has not been pre-form atted, you need to format it. When you format a memory card, all data on the card is permanently deleted.
Media player To open the media player, select Menu > Media > Me dia player . Music menu Access your music and v ideo files stored in th e device memory or on the memory card, download music or video clips from th e web, or view compatible video streams from a network server (network service).
Play songs Operate the media player Press the music keys, or use the scroll keys according to the vi rtual keys on the display. Adjust the v olume Use the volume keys. Start or pause playing Press . Skip to the n ext song Press . Skip to the previous so ng Press twice.
Stop the med ia player Press and hold the end key. Change the media player look Your device provides several themes to change the look of the media player. Select Menu > Media > Media player and Go to Media player > Options > Settings > Media player theme and the desired theme.
• Use Windows Media Player. Connect a co mpatible USB data cable, and select Printing & media as the connection mode. Radio Select Menu > Radio . Your device supports Nokia XpressRadio, allowing you to li sten to radio stations with the built-in FM antenna.
Switch to anoth er saved statio n Scroll up or down. Alternatively, press the or music key. To access a station direct ly from the saved station list, press the number key that corresponds to the number of the station. Adjust the v olume Use the volume keys.
RDS — Display information from the radio data system, such as the name of the station. Auto-freque ncy — Allow the device to automatically switch to a frequency w ith better reception (available when RDS is activated). Play via — Listen using the headset or the loud speaker.
Equaliser Adjust the sound whe n using the media p layer. Select Menu > Media > Equaliser . Activate a pred efined equali ser set Scroll to a set, and select Activate . Create a new equaliser se t 1 Select one of the last two sets in the list and Optio ns > Edit .
To set up the service, select Menu > Internet > Web settings > Configurat ion sett. , a config uration, and a n account. Connect to a service To make a connection to th e service, select Menu > Internet > Home ; or in the standby mode, press and hold 0 .
Display — Select the font size, whether im ages are shown, and how the text is displayed. General — Select whether web addresses are sent as Unicode (UTF-8), the encoding type for the cont ents, and wh ether JavaScript™ is enabled. The available options may vary.

To use the Maps application, select Menu > Organiser > Maps and from the available options. Download maps Your device may contain pr e-installed maps on the memory card. You can download a new set of maps through the internet using the Nokia Map L oader PC software.
Maps and GPS Your device does not have an inte rnal GPS antenna . To use applications t hat require a GPS connection, use a compatible ex ternal GPS receiver (accessory sold separa tely). Pair the GPS rec eiver with your device using Blu etooth wireless technology.
To use this service, you need a compati ble external GPS receiv er that supports Bluetooth wireless technology. Purchase a navigation service Select Menu > Organise r > Maps and Extra servi ces > Purchase nav. licen ce , and follow the instructions.
1 Select Settings > Memory in use to select the SIM card, the device memory, or both for your contacts. 2 Select Phone and SIM to recall contacts from bo th memories. When you save contacts, they are saved in the device memory. Handle contacts Search for a contact Select Menu > Contacts > Names .
Copy all contacts Select Menu > Contacts > Copy contacts or Move contacts . Create a contact group Arrange contacts into caller groups with different ringing tones and group images. 1 Select Menu > Contact s > Groups . 2 Select Add or Optio ns > Add new group to create a ne w group.
