About your device The wireless device described in this guide is approved for use on the (E)GSM 850, 900, 1800,1900, and UMTS 900, 1900, 2100 networks.

Open the kickstand at the back of the device, and place the device on a level surface. When you open the kickst and, the Photos application is opened automatically. To modify the kickstand settings, select Menu > Tools > Settings and General > Personalisation > Kickstand .

To switch off the device, press the power ke y briefly, and selec t Switch off! . Charge the battery Your battery has been pa rtial ly char ged at the factory. There may not be a need to ch arge the battery in advance. If the devic e indicates a low charge, do the foll owing: Regular charging 1.
Headset You can connect a compatible headset or compatible headphones to your device. You may need to select th e cable mode. Some headsets come in two parts, a remote control unit and headphones . A remote control unit has a microphone and keys to an swer or end a phone call, adjust the volume, and play music or video files.
3 — Cellular antenna The FM transmitter ante nna is located in the back cover of yo ur device. If you chang e the back cover, check that the new cove r includes this antenna, otherwise this connection stops working. Bluetooth, WLAN, and GPS antennas are located at the back of your device.
Find help In-device help Your device contains instructi ons to help to use the applications in your device. To open help te xts from the main menu, select Menu > Applications > Help and the application for which you w ant to read instructions.

Your device Phone setup When you switch on y our device for the first time, the Phone setup application open s. To access the Phone setup applica tion later, select Menu > Tools > Phone setup . To set up the de vice connections, select Settings wizard .
Some earlier Nokia devices may not have the Switch application. In this case, the Switch application is sent to the o ther device as a message. To install the Sw itch application on the other device, open the message, and follow the instructions on the display.

Mobile Search Select Me nu > Search . You can also access Mobile Searc h directly from the active standby mode, if that has been activated in the settings. Use Mobile Search to acce ss intern et search engines and to f ind and connec t to local services, websites, images, and mobile conten t.
When the offline p rofile is active, you can use y our device without a SIM card. If the SIM card is not properly in place, the device starts in the offline profile. Important: In the Offline profile you cannot m a k e o r r e c e i v e a n y c a l l s , o r u s e o t h e r f e a t u r e s t h a t require cellular network coverage.

Camera About the camera Your Nokia N86 8MP has two cameras. The main, high-resolution camera, is on the back of the device. The secondary, lower resolu tion camera is on the front. You can use both cameras to capture images and record videos. Your device supports an image capture resolution of 3264x24 48 pixels (8 megapixels).

Adjust the exposure compensation (images only). Adjust sharpness (images only). Adjust contrast (images only). Adjust light sensitivity (images only). Activate panorama mode. The icons chang e to reflec t the current setting. Saving the captured image may take longer if you change the zoom, li ghting, or colour settings.
Select Menu > Applications > Camera . To add location inform ation to all captured material, select Options > Settings > Record location > On . The location information is available only for images captured with the main camera. It may take several minutes to obtain the coordinates of your locati on.
● If you do not want to keep the image, select Delete ( ). ● To send the image using a multimedia message, e-mail, or other connection methods, such as Bluetooth connectivi ty, press the call key, or select Send ( ). If you are in a call, select Send to ca ller ( ).
To make your own scene suitable for a certain environ ment, scrol l to User defined , and se lect Options > Change . In th e user defined scene you can adjust different lighti ng and colour settings. To copy the settings of another sc ene, select Based on scene mode and the desired scene.
Tip: In the active toolbar, select Self timer > 2 seconds to keep your hand steady when taking a picture . Tips on taking good photogra phs Picture quality Use the appropriate pi cture quality. The camera has several picture quality modes. Use the highest setting to make sure that the camera produ ces the best picture quality availa ble.

● To immediately play the video clip you just recorded, select Play ( ). ● If you do not want to keep the video, select Delete ( ). ● To send the video clip using a multimedia message, e-mail, or other connection methods, such as Bluetooth connect ivity, press the call key, or select Send ( ) .
to pause at the digital and extended digital step point, and Off allows a limited amount of z oom while retaining the image resol ution. Use the extended zoom only when getting closer to the subject is more important th an the final image quality. The overall quality of a digi tally zoomed image is always lower than that of an unzoomed image.
Video settings To change the main sett ings, in the video mode, select Options > Settin gs and from the following: ● Video quality — Set the quality of the video clip . Select Sharing , if you want to send the video clip using a multimedia message.
Photos About Photos Select Menu > Phot os and from the following: ● Captured — View all the images and video s you have captured . ● Months — View images and videos catego rised by the month the y where captured. ● Albums — View th e default albums and the ones you have created.
To move images to an album for later printing, select Options > Add to album > Print later . View and edit file details Select Me nu > Photos . Go to an item. To view and edit image or video properties, select Options > Details > View and edit and from the following: ● Tags — View the currently used t ags.
Play the video clip. Send the image or video clip. Upload the image or video clip to a compatible online album (only available if you have set up an account for a compatib le online album). Add the item to an album. Manage tags and other pr operties of the item.
To view your images as a slide show, select an image and Options > Slide show > Play forwards or Play backwards . The slide show starts from the selected file. To view only the selected images as a slide show, select Options > Mark/Unmark > Mark to mark images.
The images are shown in the image viewer, and the video clips are played in RealPlayer. All audio, including the active calls, stereo video clip sound, key tone, and ringing tone, is routed to the TV when the Nokia Video-Out Cable is conn ected to the device .
Reduce red-eye To reduce red-eye in an image, select Options > Add effect and ( Red-eye reduction ). Scroll the cross onto the eye, and press the scroll key. Scroll to resize the loop to fit the siz e of the eye. To reduce the redness, pr ess the scroll key.
Gallery About Gallery Select Menu > Applications > Gallery . Gallery is a storage place for your images, video and sound clips, songs, and streaming links. Main view Select Menu > Applications > Gallery . Select from the following: ● Images — View images and video clips in Photos.
Streaming links Select Me nu > Applications > Gallery and Streaming links . To open a streaming link, select the link from the list. To add a new streaming link, select Options > New link . Presentations Select Me nu > Applications > Gallery .
Connectivity Your device off ers several options to connect to the internet or to another co mpatible device or PC. Wireless LAN About WLAN To use a wireless LAN (WLAN) connection, it must be available in th e location, and your device must be connected to the WLAN.
When the device is in the Offline pro file, you can still use a WLAN, if available. Remember to comply with any appli cable sa fety requ irements w hen establishing and using a WLAN connecti on.
Connection manager Active data connections Select Menu > Tools > Connecti vity > Conn. mgr. . Select Active data connections . In the active data con nections view, you can see the open data .

To make calls, you must first leave the remote SIM mode. If the device has been locked, enter the loc k code to unlock it first. 1. Select Options > New paired device .
To unblock a devi ce, open the blocked devices tab, and select Options > Delete . To unblock all blocked devices, select Options > Delete all . If you reject a pairing re quest from another device, you are asked if you want to block all fu ture connection requests from this devi ce.

Browser About Browser Select Menu > Web . With the Browser applicatio n, you can view hypertext markup langua ge (HTML) web pages on the internet as original l y designed. You can also browse web pages that are designed specifically for mobile devices, and use exte nsible hypertext markup language (XHTML), or the wireless markup language (WML).
To view the shortcut key map, selec t Options > Keypad short cuts . To edit the sh ortcut keys, select Edit . Tip: To minimise th e browser without exiting the application or connection, press the end key once. Browser toolbar The browser toolbar helps you select frequent ly used functions of the browser.
The browser application au tomatically detects if a web page contains web feeds. If web feeds are available, to subscribe to a web feed, select Op tions > Subscribe to web feeds . To update a web feed , in the Web feeds view, select a feed and Options > We b feed option s > Refresh .

To delete the inf ormation the network server collects about your visits to various web pages, select Options > Cl ear privacy data > Cookies . Connection security If the security indicato r ( ) is displayed during a connection , the data transmission betwe en the device and the internet gateway or server is encrypted.
● Java/ECMA script — Enable or disable the use of scripts. ● Java/ECMA script errors — Sel ect whether you want to receive script notifications. ● Open while downloading — Select whether you want to be able to open a file while it is bein g downloaded.
Music Warning: Continuous exposure to high volume may damage your he aring. Listen to music at a moderate level, and do not hold the device near your ear when the lou dspeaker is in use . FM radio The FM radio depends on an ante nna other than the wireless device antenna.
To open the list of your saved stations, select Options > Statio ns . To listen to a saved station, select Options > Station > Listen . To change station details, select Options > Station > Edit . FM radio settings Select Me nu > Music > FM rad io .
To listen to a radio station on the internet, do the following: 1. Select a station from your favourites or the station directory, or sear ch for stations by name from the Nokia Internet Radio service. To add a station manually, select Options > Add station manually .
To make another search, select Options > Search again . Station d irect ory Select Me nu > Music > Internet radio and Station directory . The station directory is main tained by Nokia.
The recommended connection method is WLAN. Check with your service pr ovider for terms and data service fees before us ing different connection methods.
To subscribe to marked channels and add them to your list of subscrib ed podcasts, select Subscribe . You can also add a podcas t by selecting its ti tle. To start a new search, select Options > New search . To go the website of a podcast, tap the podcast, and select Options > Open web page (network service).
To see the podcasts you have subscribed to, select Podcasting > Podcasts . To see individual episode titles (an episode is a particular media file of a podcast), select the podcast title. To start a download, select the episode title. To download or to continue to download selected or marked episodes, selec t Options > Download .
Music player Music player supports files formats such as AAC, AAC +, eAAC+, MP3, and WMA. Music player does not necessarily support all fea tures of a file format or all the variations of file formats. You can also use Music player to listen to podcast episodes.
To adjust the volume, press the volume key. To modify the tone of the music playbac k, select Options > Equaliser . To modify the balance and stereo image or to enhance bass, select Optio ns > Setti ngs . To view a visualisation during playback, select Options > Show visualisation .
Podcast episodes h ave three states: never played, partially played, and completely played. If an episode is partially played, it plays from the last playback position the next time it is played. If an episode is never played or completely played, it plays from the beginning.

To activate the FM transmitter, select FM transmitter > On . To set a frequency manuall y, select Frequency and enter the desired value. To list the previously used frequencies, select Options > Last frequenc ies .
Positioning (GPS) You can use applications such as GPS data to determine your location, or measure distances and coordinates. These applications require a GPS connecti on. About GPS The coordinates in t he GPS are expressed in the degrees and decimal degr ees format using the international WGS-84 coordinate system.

Check satellite signal status To check how many satellit es your device has found, and whether your device is receiving satellite signals, select Menu > Ap plicatio ns > GPS data and Options > Satellite status .

Nokia Maps About Maps With Maps, y ou can see your current location on the m a p , b r o w s e m a p s o f d i f f e r e n t c i t i e s a n d c o u n t r i e s , search for places, plan ro utes from one location to another, save locations, and send them to compatible devices.
Compass Select Menu > Maps . Your device has an inte rnal compass. When the compass is enable d, the ci rcle around the compass is green, and the map view rotates automatically according to the direc tion to which the top of the device is pointing.
When you have an active data connection and browse the map on the display, a ne w map is automatically downloade d if you scroll to an area not covered by the maps that have already been downloaded. The maps are automatically saved in the device memory or on a compatible memory card, if inserted.
Plan a route To plan a route, scroll to your start point on t he map, press the scroll key, and select Add to route . To add the destination and m ore locations to th e route, select Add new route point . If you want to use your current position as the st arting point, add th e destination to the route.

The location of speed cameras c an be shown on your route during navigat ion and tracking, if this feature is enabled. Some jurisdictions prohibit or regulate the use of speed camera location data.

Update maps To update the maps and vo ice guidance files in your compatible device, downlo ad Nokia Ma ps Upda ter to your computer from www.nokia.com/map s. Connect yo ur device to th e computer, op en Nokia Maps Updater, and do the following: 1. Select your langua ge from the list.
Home network About home network Your device is co mpatible with Universa l Plug a nd Play (UPnP) and certified by the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA). You can use a wirel ess LAN (WLAN) access point device or router to create a home network. Then you can connect compatible WLAN-enabled UPnP devices to the network.

Nokia Video Centre With Nokia Video Centre (n etwork service), you can download and stream video clips over the air from compatible internet vide o services using a packet data or WLAN connection . You can also transfer video clips from a compatible PC to your device and view them in Video centre.

N-Gage About N-Gage N-Gage is a mobile gaming platform ava ilable for a range of compatible Nokia mobile devices. You can access N-Gage games, play ers, and content thro ugh the N-Gage appl ication on your device. You can also download games and access some features on your computer at www.
In My friends, you can invite other N-Gage players to your friends list, and see if they are online and available to play. You can also send messages to your N-Gage friends. In Showroom, you can find information about N-Gage games, including screenshots and player reviews.
Track your progress To view your current N-Gage points, go to Hom e, and select Track My Progress . Play with friends To connect with N-Ga ge pl ayers on your friends list and to invite them to a game, select Play With Friends .
Edit profile details To edit your public profile details, select Options > Edit Profi le , open the public tab, and selec t from the following: ● Icon — Add an image to repre sent you. When you change the icon, N-Gage shows a list of all the images in your device Gallery that can be used as the icon.
Sort the friends li st To sort your friends by availability, player name, or N-Gage points, select Options > Sort Friends By . Rate a player To rate a player, scroll to the player on your friends list, and select Opti ons > Rate Player . You can give a player a rating from one to five stars.
● Account Details — Select your purchase preferences. When you purch ase a game, you are asked if you want to save your billing details, including your credit card n umber, for faster purchasing in the futu re.
Messaging Only devices that have compatible features can receive and display multimedia messages. The appear ance of a message may var y depe nding on the receiving device. Messaging main view Select Menu > Messaging (network service). To create a new message, select New message .
Traditional text input Press a number key ( 1 – 9 ) repeatedly until the desired character appears. There are more characters available for a number key than are printed on th e key.

The wireless network may limit the size of MMS messages. If the inserted picture exceeds th is limit, the device m ay make it smaller so that it can be sent by MMS. Only device s that have compatible features can receive and display multimedia messages.
Messaging inbox Receive messages Select Menu > Messaging and Inbox . In the Inbox folder, indicates an unread text message, an unread multimedia message, an unread audio message, and data received through Bluet ooth connectivit y. When you receive a message, and 1 new message are displayed in the home screen .
To change the message re ading settings in the Speech application, select Options > Speech . See "Speech" , p. 153 . To listen to new messages or e-mail, in the standby mode, press and hold the left selection key until Message reader starts.
Bcc field is not visible, select Options > More > Show Bcc f ield . 3. In the Subject field, e nter the subject of the e- mail. 4. Enter your message in th e text area. 5. Select Options and from the following: ● Add attachment — Add an attach ment to the message.
