Register iPhone: 1 Download and install the latest version of iT unes from www .itunes.com/do wnload. 2 Connect iPhone to a USB 2.0 port on your Mac or PC using the cable that came with iPhone.
iT unes lets you s pecify the information and conten t on your computer that y ou want to sync with iPhone. B y default, i T unes syncs a utomatically with iPhone whenever you connect iPhone to your computer . Y ou can also set up iPhone to sync your MobileMe and Microsof t Exchange accoun ts, over the air .
Note: Y ou can also set up email accounts directly on iPhone. See “Mail, C ontacts, and Calendar Accoun ts.” Purchase s you make on iPhone in the iT unes Store or the A pp Store are synced back to your iT unes librar y .
Select “Sync only check ed songs and videos” if you want iT unes t o sk ip unchecked items in your iT unes librar y when syncing. Select “M anually manage music and videos” to turn o automa tic syncing in the Music and Video settings panes.
Notes • Sync notes in the Not es application on iPhone with notes in Mail on a Mac or with Microsoft Outlook 2003 or 2007 on a PC. (On a Mac, you must have Mac OS version 1 0.5.7 or later installed t o sync notes.) Adv anced • These options let you r eplace the information on iPhone with the information on your computer during the next sync.
Prev ent aut omatic syncing for all iPhones and iP ods: In iT unes choose iT unes > Pref erences (on a Mac) or Edit > P referenc es (on a PC), click Devices, and selec t “Disable automatic syncing f or all iPhones and iP ods.

Push A ccounts MobileMe, Microsoft Exchange , and Y ahoo! Mail are k nown as “push ” accounts. When new information is av ailable, such as the ar rival of an email message , the information is automatically deliv ered (pushed) to iPhone.

Home Screen Pre ss the Home button at an y time to go to the Home screen, which con tains your iPhone applications. Camera T ake photos , and r ecord videos (iPhone 3GS only). View them on iPhone, email them, send them in an MMS message (iPhone 3G or later), or upload them to your c omputer . T rim and save video clips. Upload videos direc tly to Y ouTube . T ake a friend’ s picture and set iPhone to display it when that person calls y ou.
Calculator Add , subtract, multiply , and divide. Rotate iPhone sideways to use expanded scien tic functions. Settings Set up accounts and adjust all iPhone settings in one conv enient place.
Y ou can also rearrange the Home screen icons and the order of the screens (in iT unes 9 or later) when iPhone is connected to your c omputer . Select iPhone in the iT unes sidebar , then click the A pplications tab. Create addition al Home screens: While arranging ic ons, drag an icon to the right edge of the screen until a new screen appears .
By default, if you don ’t touch the screen for a minute , iPhone locks automatically . Sleep/W ake button Lock iPhone Pre ss the Sleep/Wake button. Unlock iPhone Pre ss the Home button or the Sleep/Wake button, then drag the slider .
Ring/Silent Switch Flip the Ring/Silent switch t o change between ring and silent modes. Ring Silent When set to ring mode, iPhone plays all sounds. When set to silen t mode, iPhone doesn ’t ring or play alerts and other sound e ects.
Close an application and return to the Home scr een: P ress the Home button below the display . Scrolling Drag up or down to scroll. On some screens such as webpages, you can also scroll side to side. Dragging your nger to scroll w on ’t choose or activate anything on the scr een.
Lists Some lists have an index along the right side , which helps you naviga te quickly . Find it ems in an indexed list: T ap a letter t o jump to items starting with that letter . Drag your nger along the index to scr oll quick ly through the list.
Viewing in Landscape Many iPhone applications let you view the screen in either portrait or landscape orientation. Rotate iPhone and the dis play rotate s too, adjusting automatically to t the new screen orientation. Y ou may prefer landscape f or viewing webpages in Safari, or when entering text, for example.
T yping Depending on the application you ’ re using, the intelligent keyboard may aut omatically suggest corrections as you type to help prevent mistyped words . Enter te xt: 1 T ap a tex t eld , such as in a note or new contact, to bring up the keyboard .
Dictionar y F or many languages , iPhone has dictionaries to help you type. The appropriate dictionar y is activated automatically when y ou select a suppor ted keyboard. F or a list of suppor ted languages, see www.apple .com/iphone/specs.html. iPhone uses the active dictionar y to suggest corrections or complete the word y ou’ re typing.
P osition the insertion point: T ouch and hold to bring up the magnifying glass, then drag to position the insertion point. Select text: T ap the inser tion point to display the selection buttons. T ap S elect to select the adjacent word or tap Select All to select all text.
Intern ational Keyboar ds iPhone provides keyboards that allo w you to enter te xt in many di erent language s, including languages that read from right t o left. F or a complet e list of suppor ted keyboards, go to www .apple.com/iphone/specs.html.
Enter T radition al Chinese Zhuyin Use the keyboard to enter Zhuyin letters . As you type, suggested Chinese characters appear . T ap a character to choose it, or continue ent ering Zhuyin to see more character options. After y ou type an initial letter , the keyboard changes to show more letters.
Searching Y ou can search many applications on iPhone , including Mail, Calendar , iP od , Notes , and Contacts. Y ou can search an individual application, or search all the applications at once using Spotlight. Go to Spotlight: From the main page of the Home screen, ick lef t to right.
V oic e Contr ol V oice Con trol (available only on iPhone 3GS) lets y ou make phone calls and control iP od music playback using voice commands . Note: V oice Contr ol isn’ t available in all language s. Use V oice C ontrol: Pre ss and hold the Home button until the V oice C ontrol screen appears and you hear a beep .
Say only iPhone commands and names , and numbers. P ause slightly betw een • commands. Use full names. • By default, V oice C ontrol expects you to speak v oice commands in the language that’ s set for iPhone (the General > International > Language setting).
Rewind Pre ss the center button three-times quickly and hold. Adjust the volume (iPhone 3GS only) Pre ss the + or – button. Answer an incoming call Pre ss the center button once . End the current call Pre ss the center button once . Decline an incoming call Pre ss and hold the center button for about tw o seconds, then let go .
Many Wi-F i networks can be used free of charge including , in some regions, Wi-F i hotspots provided b y your iPhone carrier . Some Wi-F i networks require a fee . T o join a Wi-Fi network at a hots pot where charges apply , you can usually open Safari to see a webpage that allows y ou to sign up for service.
Internet A ccess on an Airplane Airplane mode turns o the i Phone radio transmitters to a void interfering with aircraft operation. In some regions , where allowed b y the aircraft operator and app.
• USB: C onnect your computer to iPhone , using the Dock Connector to USB Cable. In your computer’ s Net work services settings, choose iPhone. On a Mac, a pop-up window appears the rst time you c onnect, saying “ A new network interface has been detected.
Charge the batt er y and sync iPhone: Connect i Phone to your c omputer using the included Dock Connector to USB Cable. Or connect i Phone to your c omputer using the included cable and the Dock, available separa tely . Unless your keyboard has a high-pow ered USB 2.
Securit y F eature s Securit y feature s help protect the information on iPhone from being accessed b y others. Y ou can set up a passcode that you must enter each time y ou turn on or wake up iPhone. Set a passcode: Choose G eneral > P asscode Lock and en ter a 4-digit passcode, then enter the passcode again to v erify it.
Cleaning iPhone T o clean iPhone, unplug all cables and turn o iPhone (press and hold the Sleep/ W ake button, then slide the onscreen slider). Then use a soft, slightly damp, lint-fr ee cloth.
Phone 3 Phone Calls Making a call on i Phone is as simple as tapping a name and number in your con tacts, tapping one of your fav orites, or tapping a r ecent call to return it.
P aste a number to the keypad: T ap the screen abo ve the keyboard, then tap Paste . If the phone number you copied included letters , iPhone automatically con verts them to the appropriate digits . Jump to fav orites from an ywhere: Double-click the Home button.
Receiving Calls When you receiv e a call, tap Answer . If iPhone is locked , drag the slider . Y ou can also press the cen ter button on your iPhone headset or the equivalen t button on your Bluetooth headset to answer a call. Center button Silence a call: Press the Sleep/W ake button or either volume button.
Mute your line T ap Mute . Y ou can still hear the caller , but the caller can ’t hear you. Use the keypad to en ter information T ap Keypad . Use the speakerphone or a Bluetooth de vice T ap Speaker . The Button is labeled A udio Source when a Bluetooth device is av ailable, which lets you select the Bluetooth device, iPhone , or Speaker Phone.
4 Repeat steps two and three to add up t o ve calls. Drop one call T ap Conferenc e and tap next to a call. Then tap End Call. T alk priv ately with a call T ap C onference , then tap P rivate next to a call. T ap Merge Calls t o resume the conferenc e.
Setting Up V oic email The rst time you tap V oicemail, i Phone prompts you t o create a voicemail passw ord and record y our voicemail greeting . Change your greeting: 1 T ap V oicemail, tap Greeting, then tap Cust om. 2 T ap Record when you’ re ready to star t.
T ap V oicemail t o see a list of your messages. Skip to any point in a message: Drag the playhead. Unheard messages Play/Pause Contact info Scrubber bar Speakerphone (Audio, when a Bluetooth device is connected. T ap to choose audio output.) Return the call Listen to a message: T ap the message.
Con tacts F rom a contact’ s Inf o screen, a quick tap lets y ou make a phone call, create a new email message , nd the location of their address, and more. See “ Searching Contacts” on page 17 7 . F avorite s F av orites gives y ou quick access to your most-used phone numbers.
F or more information, see Chapter 19 , “ Settings,” on page 13 8 . Setting Ringtones Y ou can set the default ringtone for calls and Clock alarms and timers. Y ou can also assign individual ringtones to con tacts so you k now who ’ s calling. Set the default ringtone: In Settings, choose Sounds > Ringtone, then choose a ringtone.
Bluetooth Status The Bluetooth icon appears in the iPhone status bar at the t op of the screen: • (blue) or (white): B luetooth is on and a device is connected to iPhone . ( The color depends on the current color of the status bar .) • (gray): Bluetooth is on but no device is connected .
Set iPhone to add the correct prex when dialing from another coun tr y: In Settings, tap Phone, then turn International Assist on. This lets you make calls to y our home country using the numbers in your contacts and favorites , without having to add a prex or your coun tr y code.
Important: If Data Roaming is turned on, you may incur char ges when roaming outside your carrier ’ s network for the use of any of the fea tures listed abov e, as well as for delivery of visual voicemail. Check with y our carrier for information about roaming charges.
Mail 4 Mail works with MobileMe, Microsoft Exchange , and many of the most popular email systems—including Y ahoo! M ail, Google email, and AOL—as well as other industry- standard POP3 and IMAP email systems. Y ou can send and receive embedded photos and graphics, and view PDFs and other attachments.
4 Enter a subject, then your me ssage. Y ou can tap Return to move from one eld to another . 5 T ap S end. Send a photo or video (iPhone 3GS only) in an email message In Photos, choose a photo or video , tap , then tap Email Photo or Email Video. Y ou can also copy and paste photos and videos.
On each account screen, you can see the number of unread messages in each mailbox. Number of unread messages T ap to see all your email accounts T ap a mailbox to see its messages.
Follo w a link T ap the link. T ext links are typically underlined and blue. Many images are also links. A link can take you to a webpage, open a map, dial a phone number , or open a new preaddressed email message . W eb, phone, and map links open Safari, Phone , or Maps on iPhone.

Searching Email Y ou can search the T o, F rom, and Subject elds of email messages. M ail searches the downloaded messages in the curren tly open mailbox. F or MobileMe, Ex change, and some IMAP mail accounts , you can also search messages on the server .
Delete multiple messages: When viewing a list of messages, tap Edit, select the messages you w ant to delete , then tap Delete. Move a message t o another mailbox or folder: When viewing a message, tap , then choose a mailbox or folder .
Safari 5 Viewing W ebpages Safari lets you sur f the web and view webpages on iPhone in the same wa y as if you were on your c omputer . Y ou can create bookmarks on i Phone and sync bookmarks with your computer . Add web clips f or quick access to your fa vorite sites directly from the Home screen.
Zooming and Scrolling Zoom in or out: Double-tap a column on a webpage to expand the column. Double- tap again to zoom out. Y ou can also pinch to zoom in or out manually . Scroll around a webpage Drag up, down, or sideway s. When scrolling, you can touch and drag an ywhere on the page without activating any links.
Opening Multiple P ages Y ou can have up to eight pages open at a time . Some links automatically open a new page instead of replacing the current one . The number inside the pages icon at the bottom of the screen shows ho w many pages are open. If there ’ s no number inside, just one page is open.
Enable AutoF ill to help y ou ll out web forms: In Settings, choose Safari > AutoF ill, then do one of the following: • T o use information from contacts , turn Use C ontact Info on, then choose My Info and select the contact you want to use .
Edit a bookmark or bookmark folder: T ap , choose the folder that has the bookmark or folder you want to edit, then tap Edit. Then do one of the following: • T o make a new folder , tap New F older . • T o delete a bookmark or folder , tap , then tap D elete.

T ransferring Purchased C onten t to Another C omputer Y ou can transfer conten t on iPhone that was purchased using iT unes on one computer to an iT unes librar y on another authorized computer . The computer must be authorized to pla y content fr om your iT unes Stor e account.

Genius Mixes are created in iT unes. iT unes creat es di eren t mixes depending on the variety of music you have in y our iT unes library . F or example, you may have Genius Mixes that highlight R&B songs , or Alternative Rock songs. T o use G enius on iPhone, rst tur n on Genius in iT unes, then sync i Phone with iT unes.
Refresh a Genius playlist: In the playlist, tap Refresh. Refreshing a playlist crea tes a playlist of di erent songs that go great with the song you picked. Y ou can refresh any Genius playlist, whether it was cr eated in iT unes and synced to iPhone , or created directly on iPhone.
Playing V ideos Play a video: T ap Videos and tap the video. Display pla yback controls: T ap the screen to show the c ontrols. T ap again to hide them. Con trolling Video Playback Videos play in widescreen to take full advan tage of the display . The scrubber bar lets you skip to any point along the timeline .
Rewind or fast-forward T ouch and hold or . Skip to any point in a video Drag the playhead along the scrubber bar . Slide your nger down to adjust the scrub ra te. The scrub rate becomes slo wer the farther down you slide your nger . Stop watching a video bef ore it nishes playing T ap Done.
T ransf er rented mo vies to iPhone: Connect iPhone to your computer . Then select iPhone in the iT unes sidebar , click Movies, and selec t the rented movie s you want to transfer . Y our computer must be connected to the Internet. View a rented mo vie: On iPhone , choose iP od > Videos and selec t a movie.
Changing the Bro wse Buttons Y ou can replace the browse buttons at the bott om of the screen with buttons you use more frequently . For e xample, if you often listen t o podcasts, you can replac e the Songs button with P odcasts.
Messages 7 Sending and Receiving Messages W ARNING: F or impor tant information about driving saf ely , see the Important Product Information Guide at www .apple.com/support/manuals/iphone. Messages lets you ex change text messages with anyone using an SMS-capable phone .
Y our conversations ar e saved in the Messages list. Conversations tha t contain unread messages hav e a blue dot next to them. T ap a conversation in the list t o see that conv ersation or add to it. T ext messages you sent T ext messages from the other person iPhone displays the 50 most r ecent messages in the con versation.
T urn MMS messaging on or o : In Settings, tap Messages , then tap MMS Messaging to turn it on or o . Y ou may want to turn MMS Messaging o , for example, to prevent sending or receiving attachments when f ees apply . Note: The MMS Messaging setting doesn ’t appear if MMS isn ’t supported by your carrier .
Editing C onv ersations If you want to keep a con versation but not the entir e thread, you can delete the par ts you don ’t wan t. Y ou can also delete entire con versations from the Message s list.
Managing Pre views and Aler ts By default, iPhone displa ys a preview of new messages when iPhone is locked or you are using another application. Y ou can turn this preview on or o in Settings. Y ou can also enable aler ts for text messages . T urn preview s on or o: In S ettings, choose Messages and tap S how Preview .
Calendar 8 About Calendar Calendar lets you view individual calendars f or your di eren t accounts or a combined calendar for all accounts . Y ou can view your even ts in a continuous list, by da y , or by month, and search ev ents by title, invitee , or location.
Viewing Y our Calendar Y ou can view individual calendars for your di erent accounts or a combined calendar for all accoun ts. View a di erent calendar: T ap Calendars, then select a calendar . T ap All Calendars to view combined events fr om all calendars.
Searching Calendars Y ou can search the titles, in vitees, and locations of the events in your calendars. Calendar searches the calendar y ou’ re curren tly viewing, or all calendars if y ou’ re viewing them all. Search even ts: In list vie w , ent er text in the search eld.
Y ou can also subscribe to an iCal (or other .ics) calendar published on the web by tapping a link to the calendar you rec eive in an email or text message on iPhone. Adding C alendar Even ts to iPhone Y ou can also enter and edit calendar events directly on iPhone.
Responding to Meeting In vitations If you have a Microsoft Exchange acc ount set up on iPhone with Calendars enabled , you can receiv e and respond to meeting in vitations from people in your or ganization. When you receiv e an invitation, the meeting appears in your calendar with a dotted line around it.
T ap Attendees to see the other people invit ed to the meeting. T ap a name to see • an attendee ’ s contact information. T ap the email address to send a message to the attendee. If the attendee is in your contacts, you can also tap t o call or send a text message.
Photos 9 About Photos iPhone lets you carry photos and videos with you, so you can shar e them with your family , friends , and associates. Y ou can sync photos and videos (Mac only) from your compute.
Viewing Photos and Videos Photos and videos (Mac only) synced from your c omputer ’ s photo application can be viewed in Photos . Y ou can also view the photos and videos (iPhone 3GS only) you ’ve taken with iPhone’ s built-in camera or saved from an email or MMS message (iPhone 3GS only).
Zoom in on part of a photo: D ouble-tap where you wan t to zoom in. Double-tap again to zoom out. Y ou can also pinch to z oom in or out. View video in full screen, or t video to screen: Double tap the screen to scale the video to ll the screen.
Play music during a slidesho w : In i P od, play a song, then choose Phot os from the Home screen and start a slideshow . Sharing Photos and V ideos Y ou can send photos and videos in email and MMS messages, add photos and videos to MobileMe galleries, and publish videos to Y ouT ube.
Add a photo or video to y our gallery : Choose a photo or video and tap , then tap “Send to MobileMe.” Enter a title and description, if you like , then select the album to add the photo or video to and tap P ublish. If you don ’t see , tap the screen to show the c ontrols.
Assigning a Photo t o a Con tac t Y ou can assign a photo to a contact. When that person calls , iPhone displays the photo . Assign a photo to a con tact: 1 Choose Camera from the Home screen and take someone ’ s picture. Or choose any photo already on iPhone and tap .
Camer a 10 About Camera With the built-in camera, it’ s easy to take photos and r ecord videos with iPhone.
