4 This Operation Manual describes the functions of the followi ng products: Life Fitness Treadmill Models: T3i T5i See "Specifications" in this manual for product specific features. Statement of Purpose: The Treadmill is an exercise machine that enables user s to walk or run, in place, on a moving surface.
5 1 G ETTING S TARTED 1.1 I MPORTANT S AFETY I NSTRUCTIONS Read all instructions be fore using the treadmill. DANGER: To red uce the risk of electrical shock, always unplug thi s Life Fitne ss p roduct before cleaning or attempting any maintenance activity.
6 • Never walk or jog ba ckwards on the treadmill. • When necessary to immobilize the treadmill, set display to read SELEC T A WORKOUT. (Press the STOP Key twice if not already there). Then hold down the SPEED DOWN Key and press the STOP Key. The treadmill now displays IMMOBILIZED.

9 1.2 S ETUP Read the Operation Manual before setting up the Life Fi tness treadmill. Place the tr eadmill where it will be used before beginning the setup pro ced ure. E LECTRICAL P OWER R EQUIREMENTS The Life Fitness Treadmill is intended for use on a normal 120-Volt electrical circuit in the United States and Canada.
10 H OW T O S TABILIZE T HE L IFE F ITNESS T READMILL After placing the unit where it will be us ed, check its stability. If there is even a slight rocking motion or the unit is not stable, determine which stabilizing leg is not resting on the floor.
11 C ENTERING T HE B ELT After the treadmill has been inst alled and leveled, the belt must be check ed to confirm proper tracking. First, plug the power cord into a suitable outlet. See the topic titled Electrical Requirements , which appears earli er in this section, for details.
12 2 T HE D ISPLAY C ONSOLE 2.1 D ISPLAY C ONSOLE O VERVIEW The computerized display console on the treadmill allows the user to tailor a workout to personal fitness abilities and goals and to monitor progre ss. With this e asy-to-use console, the user can track fitness imp rovem ent from one workout to the next.
13 E. MY WORKOUTS: The My Workout feature makes it possibl e to pre-set up to four workouts with pe rsonal setup information, such as age or desired speed, an d then store these worko uts in the console memory. These workouts are access ed with the MY WORKOUTS ke y.
14 3 H EART R ATE Z ONE T RAINING ® + E XERCISE 3.1 W HY H EART R ATE Z ONE T RAINING E XERCISE ? Research shows that maintaining a spe cific he art rate while exercising is t he optimal way to monitor the intensity of a workout and to achieve maximum results.
15 3.2 H EART R ATE M ONITORING T HE P OLAR ® H EART R ATE C HEST S TRAP The Life Fitness Treadmill is equipped with Polar ® telemetry, a heart rate monitoring sy stem in which electrodes, pressed against the the skin, tr ansfer heart rate signals to the treadmill console.
16 4 T HE W ORKOUTS 4.1 W ORKOUT O VERVIEWS The following workouts are pre-progra mm ed for the Life Fitness Treadmill. GO SYSTEM-QUICK START is the fastest way to begin exercising, and it bypasses the steps involved in selecting a specific workout program.
17 4.2 S ETTING U P W ORKOUTS The chart below lists the steps fo r setting up each work out program, except for those stored under the MY WORKOUT key. See section 4.
18 4.3 W ORKOUT D ESCRIPTIONS G O S YSTEM -Q UICK S TART This is the fastest way to begin exercising, and it bypas ses the steps involved in selecting a specific workout program. Press one of the GO SYSTEM-QUICK START keys to begin a MANUAL workout at a preset speed: English Units Metric Units WALK 3.
19 1 to 9 minutes: A workout with a duration of less than 10 minutes is insufficient for the Hill program to complete all four phases adequately. The pro gram, therefore, condenses a workout of this duration at variou s sta ges. 10 to 19 minutes: The interval durations initially are set at 30 seconds for a 10-minute worko ut.
20 Z ONE T RAINING ® + W ORKOUTS During the setup for each of these wo rkouts, the treadmill computer cal culat es a target heart rate* based on age and the workout type. The MESSAGE CENTER displays this ta rget rate and prompts the user to accept or change it.
21 H EART R ATE H ILL TM This program combine s the standard HILL workout profile with a Heart Rate Zone Trainin g workout. It consists of three hills that target three heart rate goals: The first hill brings the heart rate to 90 percent of the target rate.
22 H EART R ATE I NTERVAL TM This program also combi nes the standard HILL workout profile with a Heart Rate Zone Training workout. It alternates between a hill, which brings the heart rate up to the target rate*, and a valley, which brings the heart rate down to 90 percent of the target.
23 E XTREME H EART R ATE TM This intense, varied workout is designe d to help mo re experienced users to bre ak throug h fitness improvement plateaus. The workout alternates between t wo target heart rates* as quickly as possible. The effect is similar to that of running sprints.
24 4.4 M Y W ORKOUT The My Workout feature on this tre admill makes it possible to pre-set up to four workouts with personal setup information, such as age or desired speed, an d then st o re the workouts in the console memory. These workouts are accessed with the MY WORKOUTS k ey.
25 4.5 S ELECTING AN I NTENSITY L EVEL The steps for setting up a HILL, RANDOM and SPO RT T RAINING work out include selecting a level. The word “level” refers to a range of incli ne percentages. The treadmill features 20 levels, with Level 1 having the lowest average incline grade and Lev el 20 having the hi ghest.
26 5 U SER M ENU The USER MENU makes it possible to change certain settings in the treadmill software 5.1 E NTERING AND U SING THE U SER M ENU Enter the USER MENU BY using one of two pro cedures: Press the STOP key twice, and then hold down the ENTE R key.
27 5.3 U SER M ENU I TEMS S ETTING D EFAULT R ANGE D ESCRIPTION V ALUE USER STATISTICS Mode displays accumulated statistics of up to four different users. 29 6.2 T ROUBLESHOOTI NG T HE H EART R ATE C HEST S TRAP H EART R ATE R EADING I S E RRATIC O R A BSENT E NTIRELY • Repeat the electrode wetting proced ure (see How to Us e the Heart Rate Monitor Che st Strap). The electrodes must be wet to pick up and transmit accurate heart rate readi ngs.

31 T ENSIONING A N E XISTING S TRIDING B ELT Under normal usage, the trea dmill striding belt may stretch slightly. If the belt starts to slip during use, take the steps listed below to correct the tensi on. 1 Using the STOP key, stop the treadmill. 2 Turn the belt tensioning bolts clockwi se a quarter-turn per side to tension the belt.
32 6.4 H OW T O O BTAIN P RODUCT S ERVICE 1. Verify the symptom and review t he operating instru ction s. The problem may be unfamiliarity with the product and its features and workouts. 2. Locate and document the serial num ber of the unit, which is located o n the serial number plate above the power entry area.
