Chapter 1. Safety information This chapter presents following safety information that you need t o be familiar with before you service a ThinkP ad Notebook.
Electrical safety Observe the following rules when working on electrical equipment. Important: Use only appr oved t ools and test equipment. Some hand tools have handles cover ed with a soft mat erial that does not insulat e you when working with live electrical curr ents.
– Use caution; do not become a victim yourself. – Switch off power . – Send another person to get medical aid. Safety inspection guide The purpose of this inspection guide is t o assist you in identifying potentially unsafe conditions.
Make sure that the ESD prot ective devices you use have been certied (ISO 9000) as fully effective. When handling ESD-sensitive parts: • Keep the parts in prot ective packages until they ar e inserted into the product. • A void contact with other people.
Some standby batteries contain a small amount of nick el and cadmium. Do not disassemble a standby batter y, recharge it, throw it into re or water , or short-circuit it. Dispose of the battery as required by local ordinances or regulations. Use only the battery in the appropriate parts listing.
Unless hot swap is allowed for the FRU being replaced, do as follows befor e r emoving it: power off the computer , unplug all power cords fr om electrical outlets, r emove the battery pack, and disconnect any interconnecting cables.

Chapter 2. Important service information This chapter pr esents following important service information that applies t o all machine types supported by this manual: • “Str ategy for r eplacing FRU.
Strat egy for replacing a hard disk drive Always try t o run a low-level format befor e r eplacing a hard disk drive. This will cause all customer data on the hard disk to be lost. Be sur e that the customer has a current backup of the data befor e doing this task.
General Announce V ariant (GA V) This is a standard model (x ed conguration). GA Vs ar e announced and offer ed to all customers. The MTM portion of the machine label is a 4-digit MT and 3-digit model, wher e model = a “xed part number ”, not “CT O” (Example: 1829-F1U).

3. P ress F10 to save the Setup Utility congur ation changes. F ollow the instructions on the screen to begin the r ecovery pr ocess. 4. Select your language and click Next . 5. Read the license. If you agr ee with the t erms and conditions, select I accept these t erms and conditions and then click Ne xt .
Attention: If the user HDP has been for gotten, check whether a master HDP has been set. If it has, it can be used for access to the har d disk drive. If no master HDP is available, neither L enovo no.

This index can also help you det ermine, during r egular servicing, what FRUs are lik ely t o need t o be replaced next. A numeric error is displayed for each err or det ected in POS T or system operation. In the displays, n can be any number . If no numeric code is displayed, check the narr ative descriptions of sympt oms.

Chapter 5. Status indicators This chapter presents the system status indicators that show the status of the comput er . 1 2 3 T able 6. The power switch stays lit whenever the comput er is on and is not lit when the comput er is in sleep (standby) mode.

When you replace the syst em boar d, you must set the UUID on the new syst em board as follows: 1. Install the LENO VO ThinkP ad Har dware Maint enance Diskette V ersion 1.76 or later , and restart the computer . 2. F rom the main menu, select 4. Assign UUID .

Chapter 8. Removing and replacing a FRU This chapter pr esents dir ections and drawings for use in r emoving and replacing a FRU . Be sure t o observe the following gener al rules: 1. Do not try to service any comput er unless you have been tr ained and certied.
1 2 3 1010 Battery pack Important notice for replacing a battery pack: Lenovo ThinkV antage T oolbox have an aut omatic battery diagnostic that det ermines if the battery pack is defective. A battery pack FRU should not be r eplaced unless this diagnostic shows that the batt ery is defective.
