Read this rst Ensure that you follow the important tips given her e to get the most use and enjoyment out of your computer . F ailure to do so might lead t o discomfort or injury, or cause your comput er to fail. Protect yourself from the heat that your computer generates.
Protect your computer and data when moving it. Before moving a computer equipped with a har d disk drive, do one of the following, and ensure that the power button is off or is blinking: • T urn it off. • Put it in sleep mode. • Put it in hibernation mode.
Conditions that r equire immediate action Products can become damaged due to misuse or neglect. Some product damage is serious enough that the pr oduct should not be used again until it has been inspected and, if necessary, repaired by an authorized servicer .

Lithium coin cell battery notice DANGER Danger of explosion if battery is incorrectly replaced. When replacing the lithium coin cell battery, use only the same or an equivalent type that is recommended by the manufacturer . 3 VGA connector Use the Video Gr aphics Arr ay (VGA) connector t o connect the comput er t o a VGA-compatible video device, such as a VGA monitor . Note: If you attach your comput er to a docking station or port replicat or , use the VGA connect or on the docking station or port replicat or , instead of the one on the computer .
1 Speakers Y our comput er is equipped with a pair of ster eo speakers. 2 Emer gency reset hole If the computer does not r espond, remove the ac power adapter and r eset the comput er by inserting a straight ened paper clip into the emer gency r eset hole to turn off the computer .
1 Fn Lock indicator When the Fn Lock indicat or is on, it indicates that the Fn L ock function is enabled. F or mor e information, see “Special keys” on page 19. 2 Speak er-mute indicator When the speaker -mute indicator is on, it indicates that the speakers ar e mut ed.

Chapter 2. Using your computer This chapter provides information on using some of the comput er components. This chapter contains the following topics: • “Registering your comput er ” on page 17.
How can I use the battery power more effectively? • T o conserve power , or t o suspend oper ation without exiting pr ograms or saving les, see “P ower-saving modes” on page 24 . • T o achieve the best balance between performance and power saving, creat e and apply power plans.
Special keys Y our computer has several special keys to help you work easily and effectively . F unction k eys The keyboar d has several function keys, which consist of the Fn key 1 , the function k eys 2 , and some other k eys. • + Enables or disables the Fn L ock function.
• F or Windows 8: Opens the Settings charm. F or Windows 7: Opens Contr ol P anel . • F or Windows 8: Opens the Search charm. F or Windows 7: Opens Windows Search . • Views the pr ograms that you have opened. • F or Windows 8: Views all the pr ograms.
T o use the T r ackPoint pointing stick, apply pr essure to the nonslip cap on the pointing stick in any direction parallel to the keyboar d. Then you can move the cursor . But the pointing stick itself does not move. The speed at which the cursor moves depends on the pr essure you apply to the pointing stick.
P ower management When you need to use your computer away fr om electrical outlets, you depend on battery power to keep your computer running. Different computer components consume power at differ ent r ates. The more you use the power -intensive components, the faster you consume batt er y power .
Using the ac power adapter The power to run your computer can come either fr om the lithium-ion (Li-ion) batt ery pack provided with it, or from ac power thr ough the ac power adapter .
• Recharge the battery completely befor e using it. Y ou can see whether the battery is fully charged fr om the battery status icon in the Windows notication ar ea. • Always use power management featur es such as power modes, scr een blank, sleep, and hibernation.
T o put the comput er into hibernation mode, change your power plan settings. T o access power plan settings, do the following: – F or Windows 7: Start the P ower Manager pr ogram and then click the Power Plan tab.
T o connect to a network thr ough Ethernet, do the following: • F or Windows 7: Use the Access Connections pr ogram. F or instructions on how to start the Access Connections progr am, see “ Accessing Lenovo pr ograms on the Windows 7 oper ating syst em” on page 11 .
• Keep your comput er away from your body . • Place your comput er on a at surface and open your comput er display to an angel of slightly more than 90 degr ees. • Place your computer away from concr ete or brick walls that might dampen cellular signals.
2. Select Send T o ➙ Bluetooth Devices . Note: If you use the wireless featur e (the 802.11 standar d) of your comput er simultaneously with a Bluet ooth option, the data tr ansmission speed can be delayed and the performance of the wireless feature can be degraded.
Access Connections wireless status icon The Access Connections wir eless status icon displays the status and signal str ength of your wir eless connection.
Y ou can set any resolution for either the computer display or the ext ernal monit or . When you use both at the same time, the r esolution of both is the same. If you set a higher r esolution for the computer display, you can see only part of the screen at a time.
14. Select Manufacturer and Model for your monitor . If you cannot nd your monitor on the list, stop the installation of this driver and use the driver shipped with your monitor .
Notes: • If the monitor connect or is not compatible with the mini DisplayP ort connector or VGA connector on your computer , you can use a converter to establish the connection. Convert cables are available as options from Lenovo at http://www.lenovo.

no one else knows it. Then the administr ator sets a user passwor d for each computer in the network, and tells each user the password for his or her computer . The user can then change the user passwor d as desired, but the administr ator still can get access by using the mast er password.

P er forming a recovery operation This section provides instructions on how to perform a recovery oper ation using the Rescue and Recovery progr am. 1. F r om the Windows desktop, click Start ➙ All P rograms ➙ L enovo ThinkV antage T ools ➙ Enhanced Backup and Restore .
4. Do one of the following: • T o rescue les fr om your har d disk drive or from a backup, click Rescue les and follow the instructions on the screen.
3. In the Boot Menu window , select the USB hard disk drive as the rst boot device and pr ess Enter . The rescue medium starts. When the rescue medium starts, the Rescue and Recovery workspace opens. The help information for each featur e is available fr om the Rescue and Recovery workspace.
• Use r ecovery media if all other methods of recovery have failed and you need to r estore the har d disk drive to the factory default settings. See “Cr eating and using a r ecovery media” on page 51.

Installing or replacing the SIM card Before you start, print these instructions. Y our computer might requir e a SIM card t o establish a wireless W AN connection.
4. If there already is a SIM car d in the tr ay, remove the SIM card. 5. C arefully install a new SIM card into the tr ay . 6. Insert the SIM card tray back into the computer . 7. Connect the ac power adapt er and all cables. Replacing the base cover assembly Before you start, print these instructions.
4. Reinstall the new base cover assembly and tighten the scr ews. 5. T urn the computer over again. Connect the ac power adapter and all cables. Replacing the hard disk drive or solid-state drive Before you start, print these instructions. Attention: The hard disk drive or solid-state drive is very sensitive.
1. Disable the built-in battery . See “Disabling the built-in batt ery” on page 59. 2. Close the comput er display, and turn the computer over . 3. Remove the base cover assembly . See “Replacing the base cover assembly” on page 61. 4. Remove the screw that secur es the hard disk drive or solid-state drive.
7. Install the new hard disk drive or solid-stat e drive with br acket. 8. Install the scr ew t o secure the har d disk drive or solid-state drive. 9. T urn the computer over again. Connect the ac power adapter and all cables. Replacing a memor y module Before you start, print these instructions.
4. If a memory module already is installed in the memory slot, you need t o r emove it rst. Press out on the latches on both edges of the slot at the same time 1 , and then remove the memory module 2 . Save the r emoved memory module for futur e use.
DANGER Electric current from power , telephone, and communication cables is hazardous. T o avoid shock hazard, disconnect the cables befor e opening the cover of this slot. Attention: Before you start installing an M.2 wir eless LAN card, touch a metal table or a grounded metal object.
6. C arefully r emove the wir eless LAN card out of the slot. 7. Align the notched edge of the new wir eless LAN car d with the key in the slot. Then carefully insert the card into the slot. 8. Pivot the new wireless LAN card downwar d 1 and then install the scr ew to secur e the card in place 2 .
9. Connect the antenna cables to the new wireless LAN card. Ensur e that you attach the gr ay cable to the main connector on the card, and the black cable to the auxiliary connector on the car d. 10. Reinstall the base cover assembly . See “Replacing the base cover assembly” on page 61.
4. If a tool is pr ovided with the new card to help you disconnect cables, use the t ool to disconnect the cables from the old card. If no such a tool is provided, hold the cable connector with your ngers and gently disconnect each cable from the old car d.
7. Align the notched edge of the new wir eless WAN card with the key in the slot. Then carefully insert the card into the slot. 8. Pivot the new wireless WAN car d downward 1 and then install the scr ew to secur e the card in place 2 . 9. Connect the antenna cables to the new wireless W AN car d.
Replacing the backup battery Before you start, print these instructions. DANGER If the backup battery is incorrectly replaced, ther e is danger of an e xplosion. The backup battery contains a small amount of harmful substances. T o avoid possible injury: • Replace only with a battery of the type recommended by L enovo.
5. Install the new backup battery 1 , and then attach the connect or 2 . 6. Reinstall the base cover assembly . See “Replacing the base cover assembly” on page 61. 7. T urn the computer over again. Connect the ac power adapter and all cables. Replacing the keyboard Before you start, print these instructions.
3. T o r eveal the screw heads beneath the keyboar d fr ame, slide the keyboard fr ame forward by 2.5 mm (0.1 inch) with the keyboar d multi-tool. Note: Do not press and hold the keys while sliding the keyboard fr ame, otherwise the keyboar d fr ame cannot be moved.
6. P ut the keyboard on the palm r est and detach the connect ors. Then remove the keyboar d. T o install the new k eyboard, do the following: 1. A ttach the connectors and then turn over the keyboard.
2. Insert the keyboard into the k eyboard be zel as shown. Ensure that the fr ont edge of the keyboar d is under the fr ame of the keyboard bez el. 3. Ensur e that the screw heads ar e exposed completely . Otherwise, r eveal the screw heads by sliding the keyboard frame forward with the keyboar d multi-tool.
4. Tighten the screws with the keyboar d multi-tool to secur e the keyboar d in place. 5. Slide the keyboard fr ame backward by 2.5 mm (0.1 inch) with the keyboard multi-t ool. Hide the latches of the keyboar d fr ame under the keyboar d be zel by pushing the latches with your nger as shown.

Chapter 7. Enhancing your comput er This section provides information on installing devices and taking advantage of your computer's high-technology features.

2 DisplayP ort connect or : Connect a display device. 3 DVI connect or : Connect a monit or that supports Single-Link DVI. Note: The DVI connector provides a digital interface only . This connector can only be used with a computer that supports DVI connection established thr ough docking stations.
Note: F or the ThinkP ad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 (170 W) and ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 with USB 3.0 (170 W), use the ac power adapter shipped with your computer . 8 eSA T A connect or or USB 3.0 connector : F or the ThinkP ad Mini Dock Plus Series 3, this is an eSA T A connector for connecting an eSA T A device.
3. P ut your computer on the platform of the docking station, making sure that the top-left corner of the computer is aligned t o the guide plate. 4. Insert your computer into the docking station until you hear a click. The computer is attached to the docking station.
Connecting an external display t o the ThinkP ad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 and the ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 with USB 3.0 Group 1 (top gure) and Group 2 (lower gur e) are independent of each other . Each has a DisplayP ort connector and a DVI connector .
3. Detach the Series 3 Dock Adapter fr om the docking station. Security feature Use the security keyhole on the ThinkP ad port replicat or or docking station t o attach a mechanical lock.
Using the system lock key The syst em lock key has two positions, unlocked and locked. When the key is in the locked position, the eject butt on of the docking station is locked, and you cannot remove your computer . The key lock indicator lights when the eject button is lock ed.
Chapter 8. Advanced congur ation While it is important to prot ect les, data, and settings that ar e on the hard disk drive or solid-stat e drive, you also might need to install a new oper ating syst em, install new device drivers, updat e your syst em UEFI BIOS, or recover preinstalled softwar e.
– After the oper ating syst em installation, you should not change the initial UEFI/Legacy Boot setting in ThinkP ad Setup. The UEFI/Legacy Boot setting must be the same as it was when the Windows operating system image was installed. Otherwise, the oper ating syst em will not boot properly .
The name of each subfolder is the number of a x module. F or information about each x module, go t o the Micr osoft Knowledge Base homepage at http://support.microsoft.com, type the number of the x module you need in the sear ch eld, and click Search .
4. Double-click the Setup.ex e le in the C:DRIVERSWINUSB3 .0 dir ectory . 5. Click Ne xt . If the device driver is alr eady installed, click C ancel .
1. T urn on the comput er . When the logo screen is displayed, pr ess the F1 key . The ThinkP ad Setup progr am main menu opens. Note: If you have set a supervisor passwor d, the ThinkP ad Setup pr ogram main menu will be displayed after you enter the password.

This updating pr ocess can be done after normal working hours and on weekends, to save time and incr ease productivity .

• Problem : When I turn on the comput er , only a white cursor is displayed on a blank scr een. Solution : If you have modied a partition on your hard disk drive by using partition softwar e, information about that partition, or the master boot recor d might have been destr oyed.
Networking problems The following are the most common networking pr oblems: Ethernet pr oblems • Problem : Y our computer cannot connect t o the network.
A wireless LAN pr oblem Problem : Y ou cannot connect to the network using the built-in wir eless network car d. Solution : • If your system is installed with Windows 7 oper ating syst em, ensure that: – Y our wireless LAN driver is the latest version.
Solution : The cursor might drift when you are not using the T rackP oint pointing stick during normal operation. This is a normal char acteristic of the T r ackP oint pointing stick and is not a defect.
• Problem : The scr een is unreadable or distorted. Solution : Ensur e that: – The display device driver is installed corr ectly . – The scr een resolution and color quality are correctly set. – The monitor type is correct. T o check these settings, do the following: 1.
