Protect your comput er and data when moving it. Before moving a comput er equipped with a hard disk drive, do one of the following, and ensur e that the power butt on is off or is blinking: • T urn it off. • P ut it in sleep mode. • P ut it in hibernation mode.

Note: The hidden service partition is the r eason why ther e is less fr ee space than e xpected on your har d disk drive or solid-state drive. This r eduction is more noticeable on the solid-state drive because of its smaller capacity .

Special k eys and buttons Y our comput er has several special keys and buttons to help you work more easily and effectively . F unction k ey combinations T o use the Fn key combinations, press and hold the Fn key 1 , then press one of the function keys 2 .
Launching the camer a and audio settings • Fn+F6 – F or Windows 7: Open the Communications settings window , in which you can pr eview your video image, take a snapshot of your current image, and change the camera and audio settings. – F or Windows 8: Start the L enovo Settings pr ogram.
V olume and mute buttons Y ou can adjust the sound level of your comput er by using the following thr ee buttons: 1 Speak er mute button : Pr ess this key to mute the sound of your comput er . If you mut e the sound and then turn off your computer , the sound will r emain muted when you turn on your computer again.
Windows key On the Windows 7 operating syst em, pr ess the Windows key t o open the S tart menu. On the Windows 8 operating system, pr ess the Windows key to switch between the curr ent workspace and the Start scr een. Y ou can also use the Windows key together with another key t o achieve other functions.
Using the T r ackP oint pointing device The T r ackP oint pointing device consists of a pointing stick 1 on the keyboard and three click buttons at the bottom of the keyboard.
Note: If you r eplace the keyboar d, a new keyboard is shipped with the default cap. If you wish, you can keep the cap from your old keyboard and use it on the new one.
Disabling the T rackP oint pointing device or the touch pad T o disable the T r ackP oint pointing device or the touch pad, do the following: 1. Go to Contr ol P anel and click Hardware and Sound ➙ Mouse ➙ UltraNav . 2. T o disable the T rackP oint pointing device, clear the check bo x for Enable T rackP oint .
The ac power adapter that comes with your computer has two basic components: 1. The tr ansformer pack that converts ac power for use with the computer . 2. The power cord that plugs into the ac outlet and into the tr ansformer pack. Attention: Using an impr oper power cord could cause severe damage to your computer .
Managing your battery power T o achieve the best balance between performance and power saving, adjust your power plan settings. T o access power plan settings, do the following: • F or Windows 7: Start the P ower Manager progr am and then click the Power Plan tab.
Enabling the wakeup function If you put your computer into hibernation mode, and the wakeup function is disabled (this is the default setting), the comput er does not consume any power . If the wakeup function is enabled, it consumes a small amount of power .
DANGER Do not attempt to disassemble or modify the battery pack. Attempting to do so can cause an e xplosion, or liquid leakage from the battery pack. A battery pack other than the one specied by Lenovo, or a disassembled or modied batt er y pack is not covered by the warranty .
DANGER There is a danger of an e xplosion if the backup battery is incorr ectly placed. The lithium battery contains lithium and can e xplode if it is not pr operly handled, or disposed of.
Wireless W AN Wireless Wide Area Network (wireless WAN), using cellular networks for data tr ansmission, enables you to establish wireless connections over r emote public or private networks.
Attention: • If you want to use the wir eless features on an airplane, check the wireless services with the airline before boarding the airplane. • If ther e ar e restrictions on the use of comput er wireless featur es on an airplane, you need to disable your computer wir eless features befor e boarding.
– P ower t o the wireless r adio is on. The signal strength of the wir eless connection is mar ginal. – P ower t o the wir eless r adio is on. The signal str ength of the wireless connection is ex cellent.
Note: If you have trouble in making a connection, try moving your computer closer to your wir eless access point. Enabling or disabling the wir eless feature T o enable or disable the wireless features, do the following: • F or Windows 7: Press Fn+F5 to open the wir eless r adio switchboar d.
Setting the monitor types T o set your monitor type, do the following: 1. Connect the ext ernal monit or t o the monit or connector , and then connect the monit or t o an electrical outlet. 2. T urn on the e xternal monitor . 3. Right-click on the desktop, and click Screen resolution .
• Before you attach the DVI monitor , ensur e that the comput er is attached t o the e xpansion unit and the system works pr operly . T o attach the DVI monitor , do the following: 1. T urn off the computer . 2. Connect the DVI monitor to the DVI connector of the expansion unit, and then connect the monitor to an electrical outlet.
Setting up a presentation T o display information and make pr esentations, you can attach a data pr ojector to your comput er thr ough the VGA connect or on your computer .
Using the NVIDIA Optimus Graphics feature Some ThinkP ad not ebook comput ers support the NVIDIA Optimus Gr aphics feature. T o achieve the best balance between the comput er performance and a long ba.
Y ou also can use the int egrated camer a with other pr ograms that pr ovide featur es such as phot ographing, video capturing, and video conferencing. T o use the integrat ed camer a with other progr ams, open one of the progr ams and start the photogr aphing, video capturing, or video confer encing function.
• Do not insert an Expr essCard while the comput er is in sleep mode or hibernation mode. Otherwise, the computer might not r espond when you try to resume using it. T o install a car d, do the following: 1. Locat e the appr opriate type of slot for your car d.

screen clean and set the brightness t o levels that enable you to see the screen clearly . P ress Fn+F8 or Fn+F9 t o adjust display brightness. Head position : K eep your head and neck in a comfortable and neutr al (vertical, or upright) position. Chair : Use a chair that gives you good back support and seat height adjustment.
Assistive technologies Some accessibility t echnologies are available thr ough the Accessibility Options pr ogram. Depending on your oper ating system, the number of accessibility options available varies. In general, accessibility options enhance the way users with hearing, vision, or mobility limitations navigate and use their computer .

Using recovery media This section pr ovides instructions on how to use recovery media. Y ou can use r ecovery media t o rest ore the computer t o the fact ory default settings only . Y ou can use recovery media to put the computer in an oper ational state aft er all other methods of r ecovery have failed.
P erforming a recovery operation This section pr ovides instructions on how to perform a r ecovery oper ation using the Rescue and Recovery progr am on differ ent oper ating systems. T o perform a r ecovery oper ation using the Rescue and Recovery pr ogram, do the following: 1.

Chapter 6. Replacing devices This chapter provides instructions on how to install or replace some har dware for your computer . • “Static electricity prevention” on page 69 • “Replacing the .
Note: If an unauthorized battery is installed, the following message will be displayed: “The batt er y installed is not supported by this system and will not char ge. Please replace the battery with the correct Lenovo batt ery for this syst em. ” Read the following prer equisites befor e you replace the battery .
4. Insert a fully char ged batt ery until it clicks into place 1 as shown, and then slide the batt ery latch to the locked position 2 . 5. T urn the comput er over again. Connect the ac power adapter and all cables to the comput er Replacing the SIM card Before you start, print these instructions.
4. Locat e the SIM car d slot inside the batt ery compartment. Gently push the car d t o r emove it fr om the computer . 5. Hold the new card with the metal contact facing upwar d and going int o the slot rst. Then, insert the car d rmly int o the slot until you hear a click.
• Do not apply pr essure to the cover of the drive. • Do not touch the connector . • Before removing the har d disk drive, make a backup copy of all the information on it, and then turn the comput er off. • Never remove the drive while the computer is oper ating, in sleep or hibernation mode.
7. Insert the har d disk drive or solid-state drive int o the slot. 8. Slide the har d disk drive or solid-stat e drive rmly int o place. 9. Reinstall the cover of the slot, and tighten the scr ews. 10. Reinstall the battery and turn the computer over again.
Removing a keyboard T o r emove the keyboard, do the following: 1. T urn off the computer , then disconnect the ac power adapter and all cables from the computer . W ait for three t o ve minutes to let the computer cool befor e you start the following pr ocedures.
7. P ush har d in the direction shown by the arrows 1 to unlatch the fr ont side of the keyboar d. The keyboard will be detached slightly . 8. Car efully lift the keyboard until you can see how it is connected. Hold the k eyboard above the computer , and then detach the connect or .
1. Attach the connector . 2. Insert the new keyboar d. Ensur e that the rear edge of the k eyboard is under the fr ame. 3. Slide the keyboar d in the dir ection shown by the arrows.
4. Close the computer display, and turn the computer over . Reinstall the scr ews. 5. Reinstall the cover back into place and tighten the scr ews. 6. Reinstall the battery and turn the computer over again. Then reconnect the ac power adapter and all cables.
3. Remove the batt ery . See “Replacing the battery” on page 69. 4. Remove the keyboard. See “Replacing the keyboar d” on page 74. 5. If a memory module is alr eady installed in the memory slot, r elease the latches on both edges of the socket at the same time.
10. Reinstall the cover back in place, and tighten the screws. 11. Reinstall the battery and turn the computer over again. Then reconnect the ac power adapter and all cables. T o replace the memory module under the memory slot cover , do the following: 1.
6. Find the notch on the contact edge side of the new memory module you ar e installing. Attention: T o avoid damaging the memory module, do not t ouch its contact edge. 7. Ensure that the notch on the memory module aligns correctly with the key in the memory slot, then insert the memory module int o the socket at an angle of about 20 degr ees.
Replacing the optical drive for ThinkPad L530 models An optical drive is preinstalled in the optical drive bay . T o replace it, do the following: 1. T urn off the computer , then disconnect the ac power adapter and all cables from the computer . W ait for three t o ve minutes to let the computer cool befor e you start the following pr ocedures.
6. Insert the optical drive into the optical drive bay, and then press it rmly into the connector . 7. Reinstall the scr ew and tighten it. 8. Reinstall the battery and turn the computer over again. Then reconnect the ac power adapter and all cables.
4. Loosen the screw on the cover and remove the cover . 5. Loosen the screw that secures the optical drive and remove it. 6. P ress the edge of the optical drive outwards, using the tip of a thin screwdriver as shown in the drawing and then pull out the optical drive.
7. Insert the optical drive into the optical drive bay, and then press it rmly into the connector . 8. Reinstall the scr ew and tighten it. 9. Reinstall the cover and tight en the screw . 10. Reinstall the battery and turn the computer over again. Then reconnect the ac power adapter and all cables.
Replacing the PCI Express Mini Car d for wir eless LAN/WiMAX connection Before you start, print these instructions. DANGER Electric current from power , telephone, and communication cables is hazardous. T o avoid shock hazard, disconnect the cables before opening the cover of this slot.
6. Remove the screws and the car d pops up. 7. Remove the card. 8. Align the contact edge of the new card with the corresponding socket contact of the comput er .
9. Pivot the card until you can snap it int o place by pr essing the upper side of the connectors, and secure the card with the scr ew. 10. Connect the cables to the new wireless LAN/WiMAX car d. Be sur e t o attach the gr ay cable to the connector mark ed TR1 or Main on the car d, and the black cable t o the connector marked TR2 or Aux .
1. T urn off the computer , then disconnect the ac power adapter and all cables from the computer . Before you start the following pr ocedures, wait for thr ee to ve minut es to let the comput er cool. 2. Close the comput er display, and turn the computer over .

8. Align the contact edge of the new PCI Expr ess Mini Card with the corresponding socket. 9. Pivot the card until you snap it into place. Secur e the car d with the scr ew.
10. Connect the ant enna cables to the new PCI Expr ess Mini Car d as shown in the drawing. Note: Depending on the model, the marking for the connectors on your car d might look differ ent from the one shown in the illustration above. Be sur e t o attach the r ed cable t o the MAIN or M connector , and the blue cable to the AUX or A connect or .
• Do not drop, crush, punctur e, or subject to strong forces. Battery abuse or mishandling can cause the battery to overheat, which can cause gasses or ame to “vent” fr om the battery pack or coin cell. T o r eplace the backup battery, do the following: 1.

Chapter 8. Advanced conguration While it is important t o prot ect les, data, and settings that are on the har d disk drive, you also might need t o install a new operating system, install new device drivers, updat e your syst em UEFI BIOS, or recover pr einstalled softwar e.
– After installing the oper ating syst em, you should not change the initial UEFI/Legacy Boot setting in ThinkP ad Setup. The UEFI/L egacy Boot setting must be the same as it was when the Windows operating system image was installed. Otherwise, the operating syst em will not boot correctly .

2. While the computer is turned off, remove all power sour ces fr om the computer (battery and the ac power adapter). Hold down the power button for 10 seconds. Plug in the ac power adapter while keeping the battery out of the computer . If the computer does not turn back on, continue with step 3.
• Message : 0187: EAIA data access error Solution : Check Security settings. Pr ess F10 and then pr ess Enter t o r estart the system. • Message : 0188: Invalid RFID Serialization Information Area Solution : Reset the Block # 0 and 1, for example, the box serial number , and/or the Block # 4 and 5, for example, the UUID .
Solution : The thermal sensor has a pr oblem. Have the computer serviced. • Message : This system supports only batt eries specially designed for this specic system and manufactured by Lenovo or an authoriz ed builder . The system does not support unauthoriz ed batteries or batteries designed for other syst ems.
If the problem persists, have the comput er serviced. • Problem : My screen goes blank while the comput er is on. Solution : Y our screen saver or power management might have been enabled. Do either of the following: – T ouch the T r ackP oint pointing device or the touch pad, or press a k ey t o exit the screen saver .
Ethernet problems • Problem : Y our comput er cannot connect to the network. Solution : Ensure that: – The cable is installed pr operly . The network cable must be securely connected both to the E thernet connector of your comput er and to the RJ45 connector of the hub.
– Ensure that the switch is 802.3ab-compliant (gigabit over copper). A wireless LAN problem Problem : Y ou cannot connect t o the network using the built-in wireless network card. Solution : Make sure that: • Y our wir eless LAN driver is the latest version.
Solution : The cursor might drift when you ar e not using the T rackP oint pointing device during normal operation. This is a normal char acteristic of the T r ackP oint pointing device and is not a defect. Cursor drifting might occur for sever al seconds under the following conditions: – When the comput er is turned on.
– The display device driver is installed corr ectly . – The scr een r esolution and color quality are correctly set. – The monitor type is correct. T o check these settings, do the following: 1. Right-click on the desktop, and click P ersonalize .
– If the e xternal monit or supports the same resolution as the computer display or a higher r esolution, view output on the ext ernal monitor or on both the external monit or and the comput er display . – If the e xternal monitor supports a lower r esolution than the computer display, view output on the ext ernal monit or only .
• Problem : The screen is unr eadable or distorted. Solution : Ensure that: – The monit or information is corr ect. (Refer to the “Solution” for setting a higher r esolution on the ext ernal monitor .) – The appropriate monitor type is selected.
2. Click Hardwar e and Sound . 3. Click Device Manager . If you are prompted for an administrat or passwor d or conrmation, type the password or pr ovide conrmation.
1. Open Control Panel and click Hardwar e and Sound . 2. Click the Realtek HD Audio Manager icon. The Realtek HD Audio Manager window opens. 3. Look at the playback devices. If you have attached a headphone, the headphone will be automatically set as the default device, and the icon for that headphone will be checked.
This system supports only batteries specially designed for this specic syst em and manufactured by Lenovo or an authoriz ed builder . The system does not support unauthorized batteries or batteries designed for other systems. If an unauthorized battery or a batt ery designed for another system is installed, the system will not charge.
2. Swap batteries with another similar model, if available. If another similar ThinkP ad model is available, then verify that the batt ery pack works in the other computer and that the battery pack for the other model works in this comput er . 3. V erify the battery-status indicator .
• Problem : The comput er does not return fr om sleep mode, or the sleep indicator stays on and the computer does not work. Solution : If the syst em does not r eturn fr om sleep mode, it may have enter ed sleep or hibernation mode automatically because the battery is depleted.
Solution : Apply the disk defragmentation tool in Windows for faster access t o the data. Optical drive problems • Problem : The optical drive, such as a CD , DVD , or CD-RW drive, does not work. Solution : Ensur e that the computer is turned on and a CD , DVD , or CD-RW is properly loaded on the center pivot of the drive.
Solution : Ensur e that the problem is not being caused by the pr ogram. Check that your computer has the minimum requir ed memory to run the pr ogram. Refer to the manuals supplied with the progr am. Check the following: • The pr ogram is designed t o oper ate with your oper ating system.
