Chapter 1. Safety information This chapter presents following safety information that you need t o be familiar with before you service a ThinkP ad Notebook.
Important: Use only appr oved t ools and test equipment. Some hand tools have handles cover ed with a soft material that does not insulat e you when working with live electrical currents. Many customers have, near their equipment, rubber oor mats that contain small conductive bers t o decrease electr ostatic discharges.

Chapter 2. Important service information This chapter pr esents following important service information that applies t o all machine types supported by this manual: • “Str ategy for r eplacing FRU.
Strat egy for replacing a hard disk drive Always try t o run a low-level format befor e r eplacing a hard disk drive. This will cause all customer data on the hard disk to be lost. Be sur e that the customer has a current backup of the data befor e doing this task.
“CT O” (Example: 1829-F1U). Also, PEW , eSupport, and the HMM will list these products under the same xed model number . FRU identication for C T O , CMV , and GA V products There are thr ee information r esources to identify which FRUs ar e used t o support C TO , CMV , and GA V products.

Undetermined problems If the diagnostic tests did not identify the adapter or device that has failed, if wrong devices ar e installed, or if the system simply is not oper ating, follow these pr ocedures to isolate the failing FRU (do not isolate FRUs that have no defects).

Chapter 6. Special k eys This comput er has several special keys at the upper row of the keyboard. T o use each function, directly press the desired key . Note: T o use F1 - F12 functions, press Fn and the desir ed function key simultaneously; this is the default setting.

FRU replacement notices External CRU statement to customers: Some problems with your pr oduct can be r esolved with a replacement part you can install yourself, called a “Cust omer Replaceable Unit” or “CRU . ” Some CRUs are designated as Self-service CRUs and others are designated as Optional-service CRUs.
• T or que driver If you have a tor que driver , refer to the “T or que” column for each step. • Make sure that you use the correct scr ew. If you have a tor que screwdriver , tight en all screws rmly to the tor que shown in the table. Never use a screw that you removed.

Removing and replacing a FRU External CRU statement to customers: Some problems with your pr oduct can be r esolved with a replacement part you can install yourself, called a “Cust omer Replaceable Unit” or “CRU . ” Some CRUs are designated as Self-service CRUs and others are designated as Optional-service CRUs.
1010 Battery pack Important notice for replacing a battery pack: ThinkV antage T oolbo x has an automatic battery diagnostic that det ermines if the battery pack is defective. A battery pack FRU should not be replaced unless this diagnostic shows that the battery is defective.
