Chapter 1. Safety information This chapter presents following safety information that you need t o be familiar with before you service a ThinkP ad Notebook.
Electrical safety Observe the following rules when working on electrical equipment. Important: Use only appr oved tools and t est equipment. Some hand tools have handles covered with a soft material that does not insulate you when working with live electrical currents.

Chapter 2. Important service information This chapter pr esents following important service information that applies t o all machine types supported by this manual: • “Str ategy for r eplacing FRU.
Attention: The setup congur ation on the computer you ar e servicing may have been customized. Running Automatic Congur ation may alter the settings. Not e the curr ent conguration settings (using the View Conguration option); then, when service has been completed, verify that those settings remain in effect.
• The HMM will have the 4-digit MT and 3-digit CT O model only (Example: 1829-CT O). Again, CMVs are custom models and are not found in the HMM. General Announce V ariant (GA V) This is a standard model (x ed conguration). GA Vs ar e announced and offer ed to all customers.

Chapter 3. General checkout This chapter pr esents following information: • “What to do rst” on page 27 • “Checkout guide” on page 28 – “Diagnostics using PC-Doctor for DOS” on pa.
Note for warranty: During the warr anty period, the customer may be responsible for r epair costs if the computer damage was caused by misuse, accident, modication, unsuitable physical or operating environment, or impr oper maintenance by the cust omer .
Note: If a supervisor passwor d has been set by the customer , BIOS Setup Utility menu appears aft er the password is ent ered. Y ou can start the utility by pr essing Enter instead of entering the supervisor password; however , you cannot change the par ameters that are pr otected by the supervisor password.
Note: PC-Doctor menu does not mean the formal support device list. Some unsupported device names may appear in the PC-Doctor menu. Diagnostics Run Normal T est Run Quick T est CPU/Coprocessor Systembo.
Detecting system information with PC-Doctor PC-Doctor can detect the following system information: Hardware Info • System Conguration • Memory Contents • Physical Disk Drives • Logical Disk.

P ower syst em check out T o verify a sympt om, do the following: 1. T urn off the comput er . 2. Remove the battery pack. 3. Connect the ac adapter . 4. Check that power is supplied when you turn on the computer . 5. T urn off the comput er . 6. Disconnect the ac adapter and install the char ged battery pack.
P erform oper ational char ging. If the battery status indicat or or icon does not turn on, remove the batt ery pack and let it r eturn to room temper ature. Reinstall the battery pack. If the char ge indicator or icon still does not turn on, r eplace the batt ery pack.
5. Measur e the voltage of the backup battery . See the following gure. Wire V oltage (V dc) Red +2.5 to +3.2 Black Ground Red(+) Black(-) • If the voltage is correct, r eplace the syst em boar d. • If the voltage is not correct, r eplace the backup battery .

• P ress the Fn key . • Open the L CD cover . • T urn on the power switch. Also, in either of the following events, the computer automatically r eturns fr om sleep (standby) mode and resumes oper ation: • The ring indicat or (RI) is signaled by a serial device or a PC Car d device.
Note: Do the FRU r eplacement or other actions in the sequence shown in the column headed “FRU or action, in sequence. ” If replacing a FRU does not solve the pr oblem, put the original part back in the computer . Do not r eplace a nondefective FRU .

• T orque driver If you have a t orque driver , refer to the “T orque” column for each st ep. • Make sur e that you use the corr ect screw . If you have a t orque scr ewdriver , tighten all screws rmly to the tor que shown in the table. Never use a screw that you removed.

Chapter 8. Removing and replacing a FRU This chapter pr esents dir ections and drawings for use in r emoving and replacing a FRU . Be sure t o observe the following gener al rules: 1. Do not try to service any comput er unless you have been tr ained and certied.
Before servicing ThinkP ad Edge 11” Some models of the ThinkP ad Edge 11” you ar e servicing might have the SIM card that the customer has installed.
1010 Battery pack Important notice for replacing a battery pack: ThinkV antage T oolbox have an aut omatic battery diagnostic that determines if the batt ery pack is defective. A battery pack FRU should not be r eplaced unless this diagnostic shows that the battery is defective.

Note: Applying labels t o the bott om door The new bottom door FRU is shipped with a kit containing label. When you r eplace the bott om door , you need t o apply the following labels: 1 Serial number.
