Locating connectors on the rear of your computer Rear connect or locations shows the locations of the connectors on the rear of your computer . Some connectors on the rear of your computer ar e color -coded to help you determine where t o connect the cables on your computer .

Locating int ernal drives Internal drives ar e devices that your computer uses to r ead and stor e data. Y ou can add drives to your computer to increase st orage capacity and enable your computer to r ead other types of media. Y our computer comes with the following factory-installed drives: • A 3.

Handling static-sensitive devices Do not open the static-prot ective package containing the new part until the defective part has been removed from the computer and you are ready to install the new part.

5. Remove any parts that might pr event access to the memory slots. 6. Open the r etaining clips. Figure 8. Opening the retaining clips If you are r eplacing an old memory module, open the r etaining clips and gently pull the memory module out of the memory slot.

5. Push the release butt on 1 of the hard disk drive brack et as shown and then lift the hard disk drive brack et up fr om the heat sink. Figure 15. Removing the hard disk drive 6. Disconnect the signal cable and the power cable fr om the hard disk drive to completely remove the har d disk drive from the chassis.
10. Insert the two r etaining clips 1 of the har d disk drive br acket int o the corr esponding holes in the chassis, and then pivot the har d disk drive and brack et downwards until the har d disk drive br acket snaps into position. Figure 17. Installing the hard disk drive 11.

7. Release the power supply assembly cables from the cable clips and ties in the chassis. 8. Slide the power supply assembly to the fr ont of the computer and then lift it out of the chassis.
CA UTION: The heat sink might be very hot. T urn off the computer and wait three to ve minutes to let the computer cool before opening the computer cover . T o r eplace the heat sink, do the following: 1. T urn off the comput er and disconnect all power cor ds from electrical outlets.
Replacing the front audio and USB assembly Attention: Do not open your computer or att empt any r epair befor e reading and understanding the “Important safety information” in the ThinkCentre Safety and W arranty Guide that came with your computer .
10. Reconnect the front audio and USB assembly cables to the front audio connector and the fr ont USB connector on the system boar d. See “L ocating parts on the syst em board” on page 9. What to do next: • T o work with another piece of har dware, go to the appropriat e section.

Align the four tabs on the bott om of the new syst em fan with the corresponding holes in the chassis, and push the new syst em fan straight down until it snaps into position. 9. Connect the system fan cable to the micropr ocessor fan connector on the system board.

When you turn on your computer , you ar e prompt ed to type the password. The computer cannot be used until a valid password is typed in.
Chapter 3. Recover y information This chapter provides information about the r ecovery solutions provided by L enovo. This chapt er contains the following t opics: • Creating and using recovery medi.
Using recovery media This section provides instructions on how to use r ecovery media on differ ent oper ating syst ems. On the Windows 7 oper ating system and the Windows Vista oper ating system, you can use recovery media to rest ore the computer to the factory default settings only .
2. In the Rescue and Recovery main window , click the Launch advanced Rescue and Recovery arrow . 3. Click Back up your hard drive and select backup operation options.
• Restor e your hard disk drive to the fact ory default settings The Rescue and Recovery workspace enables you to rest ore the complete cont ents of your hard disk drive t o the factory default settings.
• T o cr eate a rescue medium on the Windows 7 oper ating syst em, do the following: 1. F rom the Windows deskt op, click Start ➙ All Pr ograms ➙ Lenovo ThinkV antage T ools ➙ Enhanced Backup and Restore . The Rescue and Recovery pr ogram opens.
2. Use Windows Explorer or My Comput er to display the dir ectory structure of your har d disk drive. 3. Go to the C:SWTOOLS dir ectory . 4. Open the DRIVERS folder . Within the DRIVERS folder , there ar e sever al subfolders named for various devices installed in your computer , such as AUDIO or VIDEO .
Chapter 4. Using the Setup Utility The Setup Utility pr ogram is used to view and change the conguration settings of your comput er , regar dless of which oper ating syst em you are using. However , the operating syst em settings might override any similar settings in the Setup Utility progr am.
• Not be your name or your user name • Not be a common word or a common name • Be signicantly different fr om your pr evious passwor ds P ower-On P assword When a P ower-On P assword is set, you are prompted to type a valid passwor d each time the computer is turned on.
2. F rom the Setup Utility pr ogram main menu, select Devices . 3. Depending on the device you want to enable or disable, do one of the following: • Select USB Setup to enable or disable a USB device. • Select A T A Drive Setup to enable or disable an internal or ext ernal SA T A device.

Chapter 5. Updating system progr ams This chapter provides information about updating the POS T and BIOS, and how to recover fr om a POS T and BIOS updat e failure. Using system progr ams System pr ograms are the basic layer of software built into your computer .

Chapter 6. T r oubleshooting and diagnostics This chapter describes some basic tr oubleshooting and diagnostic progr ams. If your computer pr oblem is not described here, see Chapter 7 “Getting information, help, and service” on page 51 for additional troubleshooting resour ces.
Symptom Action The operating system does not start. V erify that: • The startup sequence includes the device wher e the oper ating system resides. Usually, the oper ating system is on the har d disk drive. F or mor e information, see “Selecting a startup device” on page 43 .
PC-Doctor for Rescue and Recovery The PC-Doctor for Rescue and Recovery diagnostic progr am is part of the Rescue and Recovery workspace on each Lenovo comput er . Use the PC-Doctor for Rescue and Recovery diagnostic pr ogram if you are unable t o start the Windows oper ating system.
Note: Y ou can insert the disc into the optical drive when you ar e setting the startup device sequence. However , if you insert the disc int o the optical drive when you have alr eady entered the oper ating system, you need to restart the comput er to access the diagnostic progr am.
Chapter 7. Getting information, help, and ser vice This chapt er contains information about help, service, and technical assistance for products manufactured by Lenovo. Information resources Y ou can use the information in this section to access useful r esources relating t o your computing needs.
