The battery normally r equires no charging or maintenance throughout its life; however , no battery lasts forever . If the batt ery fails, the date, time, and congur ation information, including passwords, ar e lost. An error message is displayed when you turn on the comput er .

7. Install the new power supply assembly int o the chassis so that the screw holes in the new power supply assembly are aligned with the corr esponding holes in the r ear of the chassis. 8. Install the four scr ews t o secure the new power supply assembly in place.

10. Connect the new heat sink and fan assembly cable to the micr oprocessor fan connect or on the system board. See “Locating parts on the system board” on page 9. 11. 7. Connect one end of the signal cable to the rear of the new optical drive and the other end to an available SA T A connector on the system boar d. See “L ocating parts on the system boar d” on page 9. Then, locate an available ve-wire power connector and connect it t o the r ear of the new optical drive.
Figure 26. Removing the hard disk drive 6. Slide the new hard disk drive into the har d disk drive bay and align the screw holes in the new har d disk drive with the corr esponding holes in the drive bay . Then, install the four scr ews t o secur e the new har d disk drive in place.
7. Connect one end of the signal cable t o the r ear of the new hard disk drive and the other end to an available SA T A connect or on the syst em board. See “Locating parts on the syst em board” on page 9. Then, locate an available ve-wir e power connector and connect it t o the rear of the new hard disk drive.

P osition the new front audio and USB assembly to the chassis so that the scr ew hole in the new fr ont audio and USB assembly is aligned with the corr esponding hole in the chassis.
4. Disconnect the r ear fan assembly cable fr om the system fan connector on the syst em boar d. See “Locating parts on the system board” on page 9. 5. The rear fan assembly is attached t o the chassis by four rubber mounts. Car efully r emove the four rubber mounts fr om the r ear of the chassis by br eaking them or cutting them with scissors.

6. Reconnect the power cor d and all other ext ernal cables to the computer . F or connect or locations, see “Locating connectors, controls, and indicat ors on the front of your computer” on page 6 and “L ocating connectors and parts on the r ear of your comput er ” on page 7.
P adlock Y our computer is equipped with a padlock loop so that the comput er cover cannot be r emoved when a padlock is installed. Figure 36. Installing a padlock P assword protection T o det er unauthorized use of your computer , you can use the Setup Utility pr ogram to set a password.
8. T urn on the comput er and leave it on for appr oximately 10 seconds. Then, turn off the computer by holding the power switch for appro ximately ve seconds. 9. Repeat step 1 thr ough step 4. 10. Move the Clear CMOS /Recovery jumper back t o the standar d position (pin 1 and pin 2).
Chapter 3. Recovery information This chapter pr ovides information about the r ecovery solutions provided by Lenovo. This chapt er contains the following t opics: • “Creating and using r ecovery m.
Note: On the Windows 7 oper ating system, you can creat e r ecovery media using discs or e xternal USB stor age devices. On the Windows Vista oper ating syst ems, you can cr eate r ecovery media using only discs, so this operation is also called “ creating P roduct Recovery discs.
P erforming a backup operation This section pr ovides instructions on how to perform a backup oper ation using the Rescue and Recovery progr am on different operating systems. • T o perform a backup operation using the Rescue and Recovery pr ogram on the Windows 7 oper ating system, do the following: 1.
• Rescue les from your hard disk drive or fr om a backup The Rescue and Recovery workspace enables you t o locate les on your har d disk drive and tr ansfer them to a network drive or other r ecordable media, such as a USB device or a disc.
1. The recovery oper ations you can perform using a r escue medium vary depending on the oper ating system. 2. The rescue disc can be start ed in all types of optical drives. Creating a rescue medium This section provides instructions on how to creat e a r escue medium on differ ent oper ating systems.
When the r escue medium starts, the Rescue and Recovery workspace opens. The help information for each feature is available fr om the Rescue and Recovery workspace.
Chapter 4. Using the Setup Utility pr ogram Y ou can use the Setup Utility progr am to view and change the congur ation settings of your computer , regar dless of which oper ating system you are using. However , the oper ating system settings might override any similar settings in the Setup Utility progr am.
P assword considerations A password can be any combination of up t o 16 (1 to 16) alphabetic and numeric char acters. F or security reasons, it is r ecommended to use a str ong password that cannot be easily compr omised. T o set a str ong password, use the following guidelines: Note: The Setup Utility pr ogram passwor ds ar e not case sensitive.
SA T A Controller When this option is set t o Disabled , all devices connect ed to the SA T A connect ors (such as the har d disk drive and the optical drive) are disabled and will not be displayed in the syst em congur ation. USB Setup Use this option to set up USB connect ors.
2. Select Startup ➙ Primary Boot Sequence . Read the information displayed on the right side of the screen. 3. Select the rst boot device, second boot device, and so on. 4. Pr ess Esc t o return t o the Startup menu. Then, select the devices for the Aut omatic Boot Sequence and Error Boot Sequence .
Chapter 5. Updating syst em progr ams This chapter pr ovides information about updating the POST and BIOS, and how to r ecover fr om a POS T and BIOS update failure.

Chapter 6. T roubleshooting and diagnostic programs This chapt er pr ovides information about some basic tr oubleshooting and diagnostic progr ams. If your computer problem is not described in this chapt er , see Chapter 7 “Getting information, help, and service” on page 59 for additional tr oubleshooting r esources.
Symptom Action The mouse does not work. V erify that: • The computer is turned on. • The mouse is correctly connected to an appr opriate mouse connector (the PS/2 mouse connector or one of the USB connectors) on the computer . • The mouse is clean.
Creating a diagnostic disc This section provides instructions on how to cr eate a diagnostic disc. T o creat e a diagnostic disc, do the following: 1. Download a self-starting bootable disc image (known as an ISO image) of the diagnostic pr ogram from: http://www.
