F ailur e to do so might lead to discomfort or injury, or cause your computer to fail. When your computer is turned on or the batt ery is charging, the base, the palm rest, and some other parts may become hot.
Protect your computer and data when moving it. Before moving a comput er equipped with a hard disk drive, do one of the following, and make sur e that the “power switch” on page 9 is off or is blinking: • T urn it off. • P ress Fn+F4 t o put it in sleep (standby) mode • P ress Fn+F12 t o put it in hibernation mode.

Chapter 1. P roduct Overview This chapt er pr ovides information about the locations of connect ors, locating important pr oduct information, computer features, specications, oper ating environment, and pr einstalled software progr ams.

If your comput er stops r esponding, and you cannot turn it off, pr ess and hold the power switch for 4 seconds or mor e. If the system is still not reset, r emove the ac power adapter and the batt ery. The power switch can also be progr ammed via P ower Manager to shut down the computer or put it int o sleep (standby) or hibernation mode.
15 Bluetooth antenna (some models) If your computer comes with the Integr ated Bluetooth features, the antenna is locat ed under the right side of the palm rest.
3 Media car d reader Y ou can install an SD Car d, an SDX C Card, a SDHC Car d, and an MMC Car d (MultiMedia Card), in the Media card reader of your computer .
3 Ethernet connector Connect your computer to a LAN with the E thernet connect or . T wo indicators, t o the lower left and the lower right of the connector , show the status of the network connection. When your comput er connects t o a LAN and a session with the network is available, the lower left indicat or is solid green.

4 Memory-upgrade slot Y ou can increase the amount of memory in your comput er by installing a memory module in the memory bay . Memory modules are available as options.
2 Security k eyhole Y our computer comes with a security keyhole. Y ou can purchase a security cable and lock to t this keyhole. Note: F or some models, the security keyhole is at the right side of the computer . 3 F an louvers (rear) The int ernal fan and louvers enable air to cir culate in the computer and cool the centr al processor .
CapsL ock mode is enabled. Y ou can enter all alphabetic charact ers ( A-Z ) in uppercase without pressing the Shift key . Note: Another mode available for your computer , though ther e is no indicator for it, is Scr oll Lock mode.

If no integr ated wireless PCI Express Mini Car d has been preinstalled in your computer , you can install one. ThinkV antage T echnologies and softwar e Lenovo pr einstalls on your PC useful and helpful software applications to help you get started, t o stay productive while on the move and to keep you and your computer working. L enovo offers enhanced security, wireless computing, data-migr ation and other solutions for your computer .
Then, follow the instructions on the screen. When the installation process completes, the application icon will be activated and you can nd the application in Control P anel. The sections in Control P anel, the gr een te xts, and the applications are listed in the following table.
Active Pr otection System The Active P rotection Syst em protects your hard disk drive when the shock sensor inside your computer detects a condition that could damage the drive, such as system tilt, ex cessive vibr ation, or shock.

Chapter 2. Using your comput er Y our computer is powerful and is loaded with featur es and applications. Use it to accomplish anything, any day, any time.
On the go and need to use battery power more effectively? • T o conserve power , or t o suspend oper ation without exiting applications or saving les, see the explanation about “power -saving modes” on page 37 .
Special keys and buttons Y our computer has sever al special keys and buttons. ThinkV antage button Y ou can use the ThinkV antage button to interrupt the startup sequence of your computer and start the Rescue and Recovery workspace, which runs independently of the Windows operating syst em and is hidden from it.
Note: The next dr awing shows the locations of the keys that serve as the 10-key numeric keypad. The locations of these keys ar e the same on every k eyboard, though for comput ers using differ ent languages, different char acters are printed on the keyt ops.
F unction k ey combinations By setting the function keys, you can change operational features instantly . T o use this function, press and hold the Fn key 1 , then press one of the function keys 2 .
Applying a presentation scheme • Fn+F7 Apply a pr esentation scheme directly without starting Pr esentation Director . T o disable this function and use the Fn+F7 key combination for switching a display output location, start Pr esentation Dir ector , and change the settings.
– OnScreen Display Utility – Wireless device drivers F or information on the wir eless features, r efer to “Wireless connections” on page 40 . Launching the camer a and audio settings • Fn+F6 If you press Fn+F6, the camer a and audio settings window is opened and the camer a pr eview is turned on.
V olume and mute buttons Y ou can adjust the sound level of the built-in speakers by using the following thr ee buttons: 1 Microphone mute butt on 2 V olume up button 3 V olume down button 4 Speaker mute butt on If you mute the sound and then turn off your comput er , the sound will r emain muted when you turn on your computer again.
• Y ou can also get access t o the desktop volume contr ol by using the volume icon in the task bar at the lower right of the screen. T o open the V olume Control window , click the volume icon. T o control the volume, move the volume control slider up or down.
T o display the shortcut menu for an object, select the object on the desktop or within an application and then pr ess this key . Using the UltraNav pointing device Y our comput er may come with the UltraNav pointing device.
Using the T r ackP oint pointing device The T r ackP oint pointing device consists of a pointing stick 1 on the keyboar d and three click butt ons at the bottom of the keyboar d.
Changing the cap The cap 1 on the end of the T rackP oint pointing stick is removable. Y ou can r eplace it as shown in the dr awing. Note: If you r eplace the keyboard, a new keyboard is shipped with the default cap. If you wish, you can keep the cap from your old keyboar d and use it on the new one.
2. Click Manage Settings to open the Mouse properties window . 3. Click the UltraNav tab and pr oceed to customizing the t ouch pad. F or details, refer to the Help in the Utility .
6. If your computer is a Windows 7 model, click Show hidden icons in the task bar . The UltraNav icon is displayed. T o add it to the task bar permanently, click Customize and pr oceed to cust omize the settings. Y ou can now change the properties of Ultr aNav by clicking the UltraNav icon on the syst em tray .
– When you pur chase a new batt ery – If the batt ery status indicator starts blinking – If the battery has not been used for a long time Before you charge the batt er y, make sure that its temper ature is at least 10°C (50°F).
Introducing the power -saving modes • Screen blank. The comput er display r equires considerable batt ery power . T o turn off power t o the display, do as follows: 1. P ress Fn+F3. A panel for selecting a power plan (in Windows XP , power scheme) appears.
Enabling the battery alarm Y ou can pr ogram your comput er so that when the battery power falls below a certain level, thr ee events occur: the alarm goes off, a message is displayed, and the L CD is turned off. Do as follows: 1. S tart P ower Manager .
DANGER Only recharge the battery pack strictly accor ding to instructions included in the product documentation. DANGER Do not put the batt er y pack in trash that is disposed of in landlls. When disposing of the battery, comply with local ordinances or regulations and your company's safety standar ds.
Wireless W AN A wireless wide ar ea network covers a broader geographic area. Cellular networks ar e used for data transmission, and access is pr ovided by a wireless service carrier . Bluetooth One of a number of t echnologies used to creat e a wireless personal ar ea network.
Wireless upgr adeable ThinkP ad models Y our computer can be wireless upgr adeable. This means that your computer has an antenna that can support wir eless LAN access when wireless LAN access points are available. Wir eless devices ar e available from L enovo, see “Finding ThinkP ad options” on page 119 .
In Windows XP , you can use either ThinkP ad Bluetooth with Enhanced Data Rate Software, or the Micr osoft Bluetooth software. By default, ThinkP ad Bluet ooth with Enhanced Data Rate Software is installed on your computer .

4. Select ThinkP ad Bluetooth with Enhanced Data Rate Software , then click Change/Remove to uninstall the software. 5. F ollow the instructions on the screen. Next install the Microsoft Bluet ooth softwar e, as follows: 1. T urn Bluetooth power on. Microsoft Bluetooth softwar e is loaded aut omatically .
11. Click Finish . Note: If you use the wir eless featur e (the 802.11 standard) of your computer simultaneously with a Bluetooth option, data tr ansmission speed can be delayed and the performance of the wir eless featur e can be degraded.
Y ou can nd mor e detailed information about the signal strength and status of your wireless connection either by opening Access Connections or by double-clicking the Access Connections wir eless status icon in the task bar .
Using a projector or e xternal display Y our comput er comes with many featur es to increase the enjoyment of your comput er and help you give presentations with condence.

10. Click the Driver tab. 11. Click Update Driver . 12. Click Browse my computer for driver software , and then click L et me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer . 13. Clear the Show compatible hardware check box. 14. Select Manufacturer and Model for your monitor .
7. Click the Monitor tab. Check the monitor information window t o make sure that the monit or type is correct. If it is, click OK t o close the window; otherwise do as follows. 8. If more than two monitor types ar e displayed, select Default Monitor .
F or a computer that has the AMD ® display adapter: 1. Right-click on the desktop and select AMD Catalyst Control Center from the pop up menu. The “ A TI Catalyst Control Center” window opens. 2. Click Gr aphics ➙ Desktop and Displays ➙ Deskt op Management ➙ Creating and Arranging Desktops .
Playing sound Y our project or might have one or more audio-input connectors. T o pr oject sound, you will need to attach the combo audio jack on your computer to these connectors, using an audio cable (commer cially available).
F or Windows Vista : 1. Connect the ext ernal monitor to the monitor connector , then connect the monitor to an electrical outlet. 2. T urn on the external monitor . 3. If this is the rst time the external monitor has been connected, the New Display Det ected dialog bo x opens.
Using audio features Y our computer is equipped with the following: • Combo audio jack, 1/8 inch (3.5 mm) in diameter • Built-in st ereo speakers • Built-in monaural digital micr ophone Y our computer also has an audio chip that enables you to enjoy various multimedia audio featur es: • Compliant with Int el High Denition Audio.

Disabling the P assphrase function T o disable the P assphrase function, use the BIOS Setup Utility as follows. Note: Before enabling or disabling the function, r emove the power-on, all har d disk and supervisor passwords. If any passwor d is set, you cannot enable or disable the function.

2. When pr ompted, swipe your nger over the reader . 3. On r equest, type your windows passwor d. The enrolled ngerprint is now associated with your windows password. The next time you start the comput er , you can log on to the system by swiping your nger over the reader once.

Chapter 5. Recovery overview This chapter provides information about the r ecovery solutions pr ovided by Lenovo. This chapter contains the following topics: • “Creating and using recovery media.
Creating recovery media This section pr ovides instructions on how to creat e recovery media on the Windows 7 oper ating system. Note: On the Windows 7 oper ating system, you can creat e recovery media using discs or e xternal USB stor age devices.
T o use Pr oduct Recovery discs on the Windows XP oper ating system, do the following: 1. Repeat edly pr ess and r elease the F12 key when turning on the computer . When the S tartup Device Menu opens, release the F12 key . 2. Insert the boot disc int o the optical drive.
1. F rom the Windows deskt op, click Start ➙ All Progr ams ➙ Lenovo ThinkV antage T ools ➙ Enhanced Backup and Restore . The Rescue and Recovery progr am opens. 2. In the Rescue and Recovery main window , click the Launch advanced Rescue and Recovery arrow .
3. If you have set a Rescue and Recovery passwor d, type your passwor d when prompted. The Rescue and Recovery workspace opens after a short delay . Note: If the Rescue and Recovery workspace fails to open, see “Solving recovery problems” on page 87.
Using a rescue medium This section pr ovides instructions on how to use the rescue medium you have cr eated. • If you have cr eated a rescue medium using a disc, use the following instructions to use the r escue medium: 1. T urn off your comput er .
4. Open the DRIVERS folder . Within the DRIVERS folder are sever al subfolders named for the various devices installed in your comput er (for example, AUDIO and VIDEO).

Chapter 6. Replacing devices Y ou can increase the capacity of the memory or the har d disk drive by r eplacing the original, built-in device with an optional one. Or , if you need t o, you can replace the PCI Expr ess Mini Card by following the pr ocedures in this section.

Connect the ac power adapt er and the cables t o the comput er Replacing the memory Before you start, print these instructions.
4. L oosen the scr ews, and then remove the cover . Attention: Do not touch any e xposed parts other than those referr ed to in this pr ocedure. Unnecessary contacts with the electric and electronic components might cause your comput er to malfunction.
7. With the notched end of the SO-DIMM towar d the contact edge side of the socket, insert the SO-DIMM into the socket, then pr ess it rmly . Note: Insert the SO-DIMM into the socket at an angle of about 20 degr ees. Note: If you install a memory module in only one of the two memory slots, install it in the lower slot.
Prer equisites for the procedur e When replacing the drive, be sure to follow the pr ecautions. Attention: • Do not drop the har d disk drive or subject it to physical shocks. P ut the drive on a material, such as soft cloth, that absorbs any physical shocks.
6. Remove the har d disk drive by lifting its left side. 7. T urn the hard disk drive over and remove the four scr ews that secure the br acket. 8. Lift the drive out of the brack et.
9. Place the new drive int o the bracket as shown in the dr awing. 10. Reinstall the screws to secure the brack et. 11. T urn the har d disk drive over again and place the har d disk drive from the right side as shown in the picture.
12. P ull the new hard disk drive t o the left. 13. P ut the cover back in place, and tighten the screws. 14. Reinstall the batt ery and turn the computer over again.
Replacing the solid state drive T o replace the solid state drive, do the following: 1. T urn off the computer , then disconnect the ac power adapt er and all cables from the computer . 2. Close the comput er display, and turn the computer over . 3. Remove the batt ery .
7. T urn the solid state drive over and remove the four scr ews that secur e the br acket. 8. Lift the drive out of the brack et. 9. Place the new drive int o the bracket as shown in the dr awing.
10. Reinstall the screws to secure the brack et. 11. T urn the solid state drive over again and place the solid state drive from the right side as shown in the pictur e.
13. P ut the cover back in place, and tighten the screws. 14. Reinstall the batt ery and turn the computer over again. Then reconnect the ac power adapter and the cables. Installing and replacing the mSA T A solid state drive Some ThinkP ad models have an mSA T A solid state drive, which is installed at the PCI Express Mini Car d slot.

8. T o lock the card holder , slide it as shown in the dr awing. 9. Reinstall the slot cover . 10. Reinstall the batt ery and turn the computer over again. Then reconnect the ac power adapter and the cables. Replacing the palm rest Before you start, print these instructions.
1. T urn off the computer , then disconnect the ac power adapt er and all cables from the computer . W ait for a few minutes, till the inside of the comput er cools, befor e you start the following pr ocedures. 2. Be sur e to remove any card inserted in the Media card reader .
7. Detach the ip-lock connect ors 1 and 2 . Detach the connector 3 by pulling it out of the socket. 8. Release the palm r est from the computer . Now the palm r est has been r emoved. Installing the palm rest 1. A ttach the ip-lock connectors 1 and 2 , and then attach the connect or 3 .

7. Remove the scr ews and the card pops up. Remove the car d. 8. Align the contact edge of the new card with the corr esponding socket contact of the comput er . Pivot the car d until you can snap it int o place and secur e the card with the two screws.

• Problem : Y our computer is connect ed to a Bluetooth -enabled device, but you cannot use any of the services of that device. Solution : Make sur e that the device is enabled for the Bluet ooth connection. 1. Double-click the My Bluetooth Places icon.
3. Select I want t o congur e the Bluetooth services that this computer will pr ovide t o r emote devices. , and click Ne xt . 4. Select PIM Synchronization , and click Congure . 5. Select Do Not Synchronize in the e-mail synchronization selection, and click OK .
– When the computer resumes normal operation. – When the T rackP oint is pressed for a long time. – When the temper ature changes • Problem : The T rackP oint or touch pad does not work. Solution : Make sure that the T r ackP oint or touch pad is set to Enabled in the UltraNav Device Setting.
Computer screen problems • Problem : The screen is blank. Solution : Do the following: – Pr ess Fn+F7 to bring up the image. Note: If you use the Fn+F7 key combination to apply a pr esentation scheme, press Fn+F7 at least three times in thr ee seconds, and the image is displayed on the computer scr een.

Fingerprint reader problems • Problem : The surface of the reader is dirty, stained, or wet. Solution : Gently clean the surface of the reader with a dry, soft, lint-free cloth. • Problem : The reader oft en fails to enroll or authenticate your ngerprint.
• Problem : The battery pack cannot be charged. Solution : Y ou cannot char ge the battery when it is too hot. If the battery feels hot, r emove it from the computer and allow it to cool to r oom temper ature. After it cools, r einstall it and r echarge the battery .
i. Reinstall each device one at a time that you have r emoved in the earlier steps. If your computer does not run on battery power , check the following items: 1. Remove and r eset the battery to make sure that it is properly connected. Refer to “Replacing the battery” on page 89.
Solution : The batt ery power is getting low . Connect the ac power adapter t o the computer and plug it into an electrical outlet, or r eplace the battery with a charged one. • Problem : The comput er display r emains blank after you press Fn t o r eturn from sleep (standby) mode.
Drives and other stor age devices This section intr oduces the common problems and solutions that the har d disk drive, the solid state drive, and the optical drive might encounter . Hard disk drive problems • Problem : The har d disk drive makes a rattling noise intermittently .
Solution : When your comput er is not turned on, pr essing the eject button does not cause the drive tr ay to open. Make sure that the computer is turned on and that the drive connector is rmly connected to the computer .
Software problems • Problem : An application does not run correctly . Solution : Make sur e that the pr oblem is not being caused by the application. Check that your comput er has the minimum requir ed memory to run the application. Refer t o the manuals supplied with the application.
