Chapter 1. Safety information This chapter presents following safety information that you need to be familiar with befor e you service a ThinkPad Notebook.
General safety F ollow these rules to ensure gener al safety: • Observe good housekeeping in the area of the machines during and aft er maint enance. • When lifting any heavy object: 1. Make sure that you can stand safely without slipping. 2. Distribute the weight of the object equally between your feet.
Electrical safety Observe the following rules when working on electrical equipment. Important: Use only approved tools and t est equipment. Some hand t ools have handles covered with a soft material that does not insulat e you when working with live electrical curr ents.

Safety inspection guide The purpose of this inspection guide is to assist you in identifying pot entially unsafe conditions. As each machine was designed and built, requir ed safety items wer e installed to pr otect users and service technicians from injury .
Handling devices that ar e sensitive to electr ostatic discharge Any computer part containing transist ors or integr ated cir cuits (ICs) should be consider ed sensitive to electrostatic dischar ge (ESD .) ESD damage can occur when there is a difference in char ge between objects.

DANGER Before the computer is powered on after FRU r eplacement, make sure all screws, springs, and other small parts are in place and ar e not left loose inside the computer . Verify this by shaking the computer and listening for r attling sounds. Metallic parts or metal ak es can cause electrical shorts.
DANGER T o avoid shock, do not remove the plastic cover that pr otects the lower part of the inverter card. DANGER Though the main batteries have low voltage, a shorted or grounded battery can produce enough current to burn personnel or combustible materials.

What to do rst When you do r eturn a FRU, you must include the following information in the parts ex change form or parts return form that you attach to it: 1. Name and phone number of service technician 2. Date of service 3. Date on which the machine failed 4.
Checkout guide Use the following pr ocedures as a guide in identifying and corr ecting pr oblems with the ThinkP ad Notebook. Note: The diagnostic tests ar e int ended to test only ThinkP ad pr oducts. The use of non- ThinkP ad products, prot otype car ds, or modied options can lead t o false indications of errors and invalid system responses.
6. Press cursor keys t o select A T API CDx (x: 0, 1, ...) and then press Enter . 7. F ollow the instructions on the screen. 8. The main panel of PC-Doctor appears. 9. Select Diagnostics with the arrow k eys, and press Enter . Note: Y ou can select an item not only with the arrow keys, but also with the T r ackP oint® pointer .
Detecting system information with PC-Doctor PC-Doctor can detect the following system information: Hardware Info • System Conguration • Memory Contents • Physical Disk Drives • Logical Disk.
F ollow the instructions on the scr een. Lenovo ThinkV antage T oolbo x (Lenovo System T oolbo x) also has problem determination aids that determine software and usage problems. F or additional information about this progr am, see the Help for the pr ogram.

P erform oper ational char ging. If the battery status indicator or icon does not turn on, r emove the battery pack and let it r eturn to room temper ature. Reinstall the batt ery pack. If the char ge indicator or icon still does not turn on, replace the battery pack.

P ower management T o r educe power consumption, the computer has thr ee power management modes: scr een blank, sleep (standby in Windows XP), and hibernation. Screen blank mode If the time set on the “T urn off monit or ” timer in the oper ating system e xpires, the L CD backlight turns off.
Hibernation mode In hibernation mode, the following occurs: • The syst em status, RAM, VRAM, and setup data are stor ed on the hard disk. • The system is powered off. Note: If the comput er enters the hibernation mode while it is dock ed to the docking station, do not undock it before r esuming normal operation.

L CD-r elated symptoms Important: The TFT L CD for the notebook computer contains many thin-lm tr ansistors (TFT s). The pr esence of a small number of dots that are missing, discolored, or always lighted is char acteristic of TFT L CD technology, but ex cessive pixel pr oblems can cause viewing concerns.
Intermittent problems Intermittent system hang pr oblems can be due to a variety of causes that have nothing to do with a hardwar e defect, such as cosmic r adiation, electr ostatic dischar ge, or software err ors. FRU r eplacement should be considered only when a pr oblem recurs.

Chapter 8. Removing and replacing a FRU This chapter pr esents dir ections and drawings for use in r emoving and replacing a FRU . Be sur e to observe the following general rules: 1. Do not try to service any comput er unless you have been trained and certied.
Before servicing ThinkP ad T410 and T410i Some models of the ThinkP ad T410 and T410i you ar e servicing might have the SIM card that the cust omer has installed. If the computer you are servicing has the SIM card, remove it before you start the servicing.
1010 Battery pack Important notice for replacing a battery pack: ThinkV antage T oolbo x (in Windows 7) and L enovo System T oolbo x (in Windows Vista and Windows XP) have an automatic battery diagnostic that determines if the batt ery pack is defective.
