Read this rst Be sure to follow the important tips given her e t o get the most use and enjoyment out of your computer . F ailure t o do so might lead to discomfort or injury, or cause your computer t o fail. Protect yourself from the heat that your computer generates.
Protect your comput er and data when moving it. Before moving a comput er equipped with a hard disk drive, do one of the following, and make sur e that the power switch is off or is blinking: • T urn it off. • P ut it in sleep mode. • P ut it in hibernation mode.
Conditions that requir e immediate action Products can become damaged due to misuse or neglect. Some pr oduct damage is serious enough that the product should not be used again until it has been inspect ed and, if necessary, repaired by an authorized servicer .

Although ther e ar e no moving parts in your computer after the power cor d has been disconnect ed, the following warnings are r equired for your safety .
P ower cords and power adapt ers DANGER Use only the power cor ds and power adapters supplied by the pr oduct manufactur er . The power cords shall be safety approved. F or Germany, it shall be H05VV -F , 3G, 0.75 mm 2 , or better . For other countries, the suitable types shall be used accordingly .
Plugs and outlets DANGER If a receptacle (power outlet) that you int end to use with your computer equipment appears t o be damaged or corroded, do not use the outlet until it is replaced by a qualied electrician. Do not bend or modify the plug. If the plug is damaged, contact the manufacturer to obtain a replacement.
General battery notice DANGER P ersonal computers manufactured by L enovo contain a coin cell battery t o pr ovide power to the system clock. In addition, many mobile pr oducts, such as notebook comput ers, utiliz e a rechargeable battery pack t o pr ovide syst em power when in portable mode.
Lithium coin cell battery notice DANGER Danger of explosion if battery is incorr ectly replaced. When replacing the lithium coin cell batt er y, use only the same or an equivalent type that is recommended by the manufacturer . The batt er y contains lithium and can e xplode if not properly used, handled, or disposed of.
Heat and product ventilation DANGER Computers, ac power adapters, and many accessories can gener ate heat when turned on and when batteries are charging.
Electrical current safety information DANGER Electric current from power , t elephone, and communication cables is hazardous. T o avoid a shock hazard: • Do not use your computer during a lightning storm.
DANGER Some laser products contain an embedded Class 3A or Class 3B laser diode. Note the following. Laser r adiation when open. Do not stare into the beam, do not view dir ectly with optical instruments, and avoid direct e xposure to the beam.

Chapter 1. P roduct overview This chapter pr ovides information about the locations of connectors, locations of important pr oduct labels, computer featur es, specications, oper ating environment, and preinstalled ThinkV antage ® progr ams.
1 Built-in microphones (on some models) The built-in microphones capture sound and voice when used with an application pr ogram capable of handling audio. 2 Integrated camer a (on some models) Use the camer a to take pictures or hold a video conference.

7 F an louvers The internal fan and louvers enable air to circulat e in the comput er and cool the centr al pr ocessor . Note: T o avoid impeding airow , do not place any obstacle in front of the fan. Status indicators Y our computer has syst em-status indicat ors and power -status indicat ors.
P ower status indicators 1 Sleep status • Green : The computer is in sleep mode. • Blinking green : The comput er is entering sleep or hibernation mode, or is r esuming normal oper ation. 2 Battery status • Green : The batt er y charge level is 20% or more.
Y ou can nd the machine type and model of your comput er on the label as shown below: FCC ID and IC Certication number label There is no FCC ID or IC Certication number for the PCI Expr ess Mini Car d shown on the enclosur e of your comput er .
If no int egrated wir eless PCI Expr ess Mini Car d has been preinstalled in your computer , you can install one. T o do this, follow the procedure in “Replacing a PCI Express Mini Car d for wir eless LAN/WiMAX connection” on page 78 or “Replacing a PCI Express Mini C ard for wir eless WAN connection” on page 85.

Active Prot ection System The Active P rotection System pr ogram prot ects your hard disk drive when the shock sensor inside your computer detects a condition that could damage the drive, such as system tilt, e xcessive vibration, or shock. The har d disk drive is less vulnerable to damage when it is not oper ating.
P ower Manager The P ower Manager pr ogram provides convenient, e xible, and complete power management for your computer . It enables you to adjust your computer power settings t o achieve the best balance between performance and power saving.

Chapter 2. Using your computer This chapter provides information on using some of the computer components. • “Register your computer” on page 19 • “F requently asked questions” on page 19 .
• T o achieve the best balance between performance and power saving, cr eate and apply power plans by use of P ower Manager . • If your computer will be turned off for an extended period of time, you can prevent batt ery power from draining by removing the battery .
Special keys and buttons Y our comput er has several special keys and buttons to help you work more easily and effectively . F unction key combinations T o use the Fn function key combinations, press and hold the Fn key 1 ; then pr ess one of the function keys 2 .
– OnScreen Display Utility – Wireless device drivers Y ou can download these drivers from http://www.lenovo.com/ThinkP adDrivers. Changing the camer a and audio settings • Fn+F6 Pr ess Fn+F6 t o open the Communications settings window .
V olume and mut e buttons Adjust the sound volume level of the built-in speakers by using the following thr ee butt ons: 1 Speaker mute button 2 Volume control button 3 Micr ophone mute butt on If you mut e the sound and then turn off your comput er , the sound will r emain muted when you turn on your computer again.
Windows key 1 Windows key Pr ess this key to display or hide the Start menu fr om the Windows oper ating system. F or information about using the Windows key with other keys, refer t o the help information system of the Windows operating system. Using the UltraNav pointing device Y our computer may come with the UltraNav pointing device.
Using the T r ackP oint pointing device The T r ackP oint pointing device consists of a pointing stick 1 on the keyboard and three click buttons at the bottom of the keyboard.
Changing the cap The cap 1 on the end of the T r ackP oint pointing stick is removable. Y ou can replace it as shown. Note: If you r eplace the keyboar d, a new keyboard is shipped with the default cap. If you wish, you can keep the cap from your old keyboard and use it on the new one.
Customizing the touch pad T o customiz e the t ouch pad, do the following: 1. Click Start ➙ Control P anel ➙ Har dware and Sound ➙ Mouse ➙ Ultr aNav .

Using the ac power adapter The power to run your computer can come either from the lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery pack pr ovided with it, or fr om ac power through the ac power adapt er .
Maximizing batter y life T o maximiz e the life of the battery, do the following: • Use the batt ery until the charge is completely deplet ed; that is, use the battery until the battery status indicator starts blinking or ange. • Recharge the battery complet ely before using it.
Use the P ower Manager progr am to congur e how you want the computer enter hibernation mode. F or more information, see the help information syst em of the Power Manager program. • Wireless off When you ar e not using the wir eless features, such as Bluetooth or wir eless LAN, turn them off.
DANGER Do not attempt to disassemble or modify the battery pack. Attempting to do so can cause an e xplosion, or liquid leakage from the battery pack. A battery pack other than the one specied by Lenovo, or a disassembled or modied batt er y pack is not covered by the warranty .
DANGER There is a danger of an e xplosion if the backup battery is incorr ectly placed. The lithium battery contains lithium and can e xplode if it is not pr operly handled, or disposed of.
WiMAX This long-r ange wir eless data tr ansmission technology based on the 802.16 standar d, is e xpected t o provide the user a “last mile” br oadband connectivity similar to that pr ovided by cable or ADSL, but without the need to physically connect a cable to the personal computer .
T o use the wireless WAN featur e, start the Access Connections pr ogram. F or information on how to start the Access Connections progr am, see “ Accessing ThinkV antage pr ograms” on page 14. Using Bluetooth If your computer is equipped with the int egrated Bluet ooth featur e, you can enable or disable the featur e by pr essing Fn+F5.
– P ower t o the wir eless r adio is off or no signal. – P ower to the wir eless r adio is on. The signal str ength of the wireless connection is poor . T o improve signal str ength, move your comput er closer t o the wir eless access point. – P ower t o the wireless r adio is on.
– No association – No signal – Signal level 1 – Signal level 2 – Signal level 3 Note: If you have trouble in making a connection, try moving your computer closer to your wir eless access point.
Connecting an e xternal monit or T o attach an ext ernal monitor , do the following: 1. Connect the e xternal monitor to the VGA connector or the Mini DisplayP ort connector . 2. T urn on the e xternal monitor . 3. Change the display output location by pr essing Fn+F7.
Using the DVI monitor If your computer has one of the following optional expansion units, you can connect a digital visual interface (DVI) monitor t o your computer: • ThinkP ad Mini Dock Series 3 • ThinkP ad Mini Dock Series 3 with USB 3.0 • ThinkP ad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 • ThinkP ad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 with USB 3.
Using the Mini DisplayP ort connector Depending on the model, your computer might have a Mini DisplayP ort connector , a digital display interface for connecting various external devices, such as CRT monitors, LCD monitors, project ors, or even high-denition televisions.
T o change the r esolution and color quality for each monitor , do the following: 1. Right-click on the desktop, and click Screen resolution . 2. Click the monitor -1 icon (for the primary display, the computer display). 3. Set the resolution for the primary display .
T o congur e the micr ophone for optimiz ed sound r ecording on Windows 7 operating system, use the Realtek HD Audio Manager program. T o start the pr ogram, click Start ➙ Control Panel ➙ Hardwar e and Sound ➙ Realtek HD Audio Manager .
MultiBurner drive This drive can r ead DVD-ROM discs, DVD-R discs, DVD-RAM discs, DVD-RW discs, and all types of CDs, such as CD-ROM discs, CD-RW discs, CD-R discs, and audio CDs. In addition, it can r ecord on DVD-R discs, DVD-RW discs, type II DVD-RAM discs, CD-RW standar d and high speed discs, and CD-R discs.
T o remove a card, do the following: 1. Click the triangular icon on the taskbar to show hidden icons. Then, right-click the Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media icon. 2. Select the item you want to remove to stop the car d. 3. Pr ess the car d to eject it from your computer .

Chapter 3. Y ou and your comput er This chapter provides information about accessibility, comfort, and travelling with your computer . Accessibility and comfort Good er gonomic pr actice is important to get the most from your personal comput er and to avoid discomfort.
screen clean and set the brightness t o levels that enable you to see the scr een clearly . P ress Fn+F8 or Fn+F9 t o adjust display brightness. Head position : K eep your head and neck in a comfortable and neutr al (vertical, or upright) position. Chair : Use a chair that gives you good back support and seat height adjustment.
Assistive technologies Some accessibility t echnologies are available thr ough the Accessibility Options progr am. Depending on your oper ating system, the number of accessibility options available varies. In gener al, accessibility options enhance the way users with hearing, vision, or mobility limitations navigate and use their computer .
• External mouse, if you are accustomed to using one • Ethernet cable • Extra batt ery, charged • A quality carrying case that provides adequate cushion and prot ection • External stor age device If you are traveling to another country, you might want to consider taking an ac power adapt er for the country to which you are tr avelling.

2. T ype the mast er hard disk password. Note: T o r eturn to the icon , press F1 again. If this icon is displayed, type a supervisor passwor d. P ower-on password Y ou can set a power -on password to help pr otect your computer against access by unauthorized users.

Proof of purchase is requir ed, and a fee will be char ged for parts and service.

3. Click Back up your har d drive and select backup oper ation options. Then, follow the instructions on the scr een to complete the backup oper ation. P er forming a recovery operation This section pr ovides instructions on how to perform a r ecovery oper ation using the Rescue and Recovery progr am on differ ent oper ating systems.
3. If you have set a Rescue and Recovery passwor d, type your passwor d when pr ompted. The Rescue and Recovery workspace opens after a short delay . Note: If the Rescue and Recovery workspace fails to open, see “Solving r ecovery problems” on page 66.
• If you have cr eated a rescue medium using a USB hard disk drive, use the following instructions to use the rescue medium: 1. Attach the USB har d disk drive to one of the USB connectors on your comput er . 2. Repeatedly press and release the F12 key when turning on the comput er .
• In the subfolder for the device, look for the executable le (a le with the ext ension .e xe). Double-click the le, and follow the instructions on the screen. Attention: If you need updated device drivers, do not download them from the Windows Update W eb sit e.
Chapter 6. Replacing devices This chapter provides instructions on how to install or replace some har dware for your computer . • “Static electricity prevention” on page 67 • “Replacing the .
Note: If an unauthoriz ed battery is installed, the following message will be displayed: “The battery installed is not supported by this system and will not charge. Please replace the battery with the corr ect Lenovo battery for this system”. DANGER If the rechargeable battery pack is incorrectly replaced, there is danger of an e xplosion.
4. Insert a fully char ged battery until it clicks int o place. 5. Slide the battery latch to the locked position. 6. T urn the computer over again. Connect the ac power adapt er and all cables. Replacing a memory module Before you start, print these instructions.
3. Remove the batt ery. See “Replacing the battery” on page 67. 4. Loosen the scr ews 1 , then remove the cover 2 . 5. If the a memory module already is installed in the memory slot, pr ess out on the latches on both edges of the socket at the same time.
7. Make sur e that the notch on the memory module aligns corr ectly with the key in the memory slot, then insert the memory module int o the socket at an angle of about 20 degr ees. P ress it in rmly . 8. Pivot the memory module downwar d until it snaps int o place.
Replacing the har d disk drive or solid state drive Before you start, print these instructions. When r eplacing the drive, be sure to follow the pr ecautions. Attention: The hard disk drive or solid stat e drive is very sensitive. Incorrect handling can cause damage and permanent loss of data.
5. Remove the hard disk drive or solid stat e drive by pulling out the tab. 6. Detach the side rubber r ails from the hard disk drive or the side spacer rails fr om the solid state drive. 7. Attach the side rubber r ails to the new hard disk drive or the side spacer rails t o the new solid state drive.
8. Insert the hard disk drive or solid state drive into the bay, then slide it rmly into place. 9. Reinstall the cover of the bay 1 , then reinstall the screw 2 . 10. Reinstall the batt ery. See “Replacing the battery” on page 67. 11. T urn the computer over again.
4. Loosen the screws on the cover 1 , then r emove the cover 2 . 5. Remove the two scr ews that secure the keyboar d. 6. T urn the computer over and open the display . 7. Push hard in the dir ection shown by the arr ows 1 to unlatch the fr ont side of the keyboard.
8. Car efully lift the keyboard until you can see how it is connected. Hold the k eyboard above the computer , and then detach the connect or 1 . Remove the keyboard 2 .
2. Insert the keyboar d. Make sure that the front edges of the keyboard ar e under the fr ame, and then press the keyboard downwar d. 3. Slide the keyboard until it is secured in place. 4. Close the computer display, and turn the computer over . Reinstall the two screws.
5. Reinstall the memory slot cover and tight en the scr ews. 6. Reinstall the batt ery. See “Replacing the battery” on page 67. 7. T urn the computer over again.
4. Loosen the scr ews 1 , then remove the cover 2 . 5. If a t ool for removing connectors is included in the package with the new car d, use it t o disconnect the cables from the car d. If no such tool is included, disconnect the cables by picking up the connect ors with your ngers and gently unplugging them.
7. Remove the card. 8. Align the contact edge of the new PCI Express Mini C ard with the corr esponding socket contact of the computer . Note: If the new PCI Expr ess Mini Card has two connectors, as in the following illustr ation, put the white cable in the cable prot ection tube.
9. Pivot the car d until you can snap it into place by pressing the upper side of the connectors 1 , and secure the card with the screw 2 . 10. Connect the cables to the new PCI Expr ess Mini Card.
12. Reinstall the batt ery. See “Replacing the battery” on page 67. 13. T urn the computer over again. Connect the ac power adapt er and all cables.

8. Align the contact edge of the new card with the corresponding socket contact of the computer . Note: If the new PCI Expr ess Mini Card has two connectors, as in the following illustr ation, put the white cable in the cable prot ection tube.
10. Connect the cables to the new PCI Expr ess Mini Card. Be sur e t o attach the gr ay cable to the connector marked “TR1” on the car d, the whit e cable to the connector marked “RO” or “TR3” (center), and the black cable to the connector marked “TR2”.
2. Close the computer display, and turn the comput er over . 3. Remove the batt ery. See “Replacing the battery” on page 67. 4. Loosen the scr ews 1 , then remove the cover 2 . 5. If a t ool for removing connectors is included in the package with the new car d, use it t o disconnect the cables from the car d.
7. Remove the card. 8. Align the contact edge of the new wireless WAN card with the corr esponding socket. 9. Pivot the car d until you can snap it into place by pr essing the upper side of each connector 1 .
10. Connect the cables t o the new wireless WAN card. Note: Depending on the model, the marking for the connectors on your car d might look differ ent from the one shown in the illustration above. Be sur e t o attach the r ed cable t o the MAIN or M connector , and the blue cable to the AUX or A connect or .
4. Loosen the scr ews 1 , then remove the cover 2 . 5. If a t ool for removing connectors is included in the package with the new car d, use it t o disconnect the cables from the car d. If no such tool is included, disconnect the cables by picking up the connect ors with your ngers and gently unplugging them.
7. Remove the car d with the br acket. 8. Pull the card out of the br acket. 9. Insert the new card int o the bracket. 10. Align the contact edge of the new wireless WAN card with the corr esponding socket.
11. Pivot the car d until you can snap it into place by pr essing the upper side of each connector 1 . Secure the card with the screw 2 . Note: Depending on the syst em conguration of your comput er , the card might have only one connect or . 12. Connect the cables to the new PCI Express Half Mini car d.
14. Reinstall the batt ery. See “Replacing the battery” on page 67. 15. T urn the computer over again. Connect the ac power adapt er and all cables. Replacing the Serial Ultr abay Slim device T o r eplace the Serial Ultr abay Slim device, do the following: 1.
Y our comput er might require a SIM card to establish wir eless WAN connections. Depending on the country of delivery, the SIM card might already be installed in your computer or will be part of the shipping cont ents that came with your comput er .
Replacing the backup battery Before you start, print these instructions. DANGER If the backup battery is incorrectly replaced, there is danger of an e xplosion. Solution : Neither the date nor the time is set in the computer . Set the dat e and time, using the ThinkPad Setup. • Message : 1802: Unauthoriz ed network car d is plugged in - P ower off and remove the network card. Solution : The mini PCI Expr ess network card is not supported on this computer .
– Restor e the system conguration t o what it was before your comput er enter ed hibernation mode. – If the memory siz e has been changed, r e-create the hibernation le. • Message : F an error Solution : Cooling fan has failed. Have the computer serviced.
– Use either the Rescue and Recovery workspace or the r ecovery discs to restor e the system to the factory state. F or details about restoring the syst em to the fact ory stat e, see “Cr eating and using recovery media” on page . If the problem persists, have the comput er serviced.
Solution : Make sur e that: – The cable is installed pr operly . The network cable must be securely connected both to the E thernet connector of your comput er and to the RJ45 connector of the hub. The maximum allowable distance from the comput er to hub is 100 met ers.
Make sur e that the wireless r adio is enabled by double-clicking the Access Connections icon in the taskbar . Note: If your comput er is a Windows 7 oper ating system, click the triangular icon on the taskbar to show hidden icons. The Access Connections icon is displayed.
Solution : Make sure that the T rackP oint pointing device or t ouch pad is enabled in the Ultr aNav Device Setting window. Keyboar d problems • Problem : All or some keys on the keyboar d do not work. Solution : If an ext ernal numeric k eypad is connect ed: 1.

Solution : When your computer is not turned on, pr essing the eject button does not cause the drive tr ay to open. Make sure that the comput er is turned on and that the drive connector is rmly connected to the computer .
