8 INITIAL SETTINGS (cont.) SET CLOCK AUTOMA TICALL Y 3 At the Clock Set screen, press PUSH JOG . The Auto Clock screen appears and clock setting begins. ● If "TV PR." isn't set to the channel position on which Auto Clock data is received, "ERROR" appears, and then the screen from step 2 reappears.
9 PLA YBACK Basic Playback The easiest, most basic operation possible with your video recorder is tape playback. Already-recorded signals on a video tape are read by your video recorder and displayed on your TV just like a TV programme.
10 Playback Features PLA YBACK (cont.) Slow Motion ACTIV A TE SLOW-MOTION PLA YBACK 1 During playback or still, turn the SHUTTLE ring to the right for forward slow motion, or to the left for reverse slow motion (refer to the illustration to the left).
11 Manual T racking Y our video recorder is equipped with automatic tracking control. During playback, you can override this and adjust the tracking manually by pressing the TV PROG . buttons. Y our video recorder can automatically play back the whole tape 20 times repeatedly .
12 PLA YBACK (cont.) This function helps you check contents of unlabeled recorded tapes at the touch of a single button. NOTES: ● Scene Finder cannot be used when the recorder is in the Record mode.
13 REMOVE POWER SUPPL Y 1 Unplug the mains power cord from the mains outlet. SET A/B CODE SWITCH 2 Set to B. RE-SUPPL Y POWER 3 Plug the mains power cord back into the mains outlet. TURN THE RECORDER ON 4 Press OPERA TE on the remote control. The recorder will now only respond to B code signals.
14 TV signals being received by the recorder ’ s built-in tuner can be recorded onto a video tape. Y ou can “capture” a TV programme using your video recorder . 15 B.E.S.T . Picture System The B.E.S.T . (Biconditional Equalised Signal T racking) system checks the condition of the tape in use during recording and playback, and compensates to provide the highest-possible recording and playback pictures. The default setting for both recording and playback is “ON”.

19 TIMER RECORDING Information On ShowV iew With ShowV iew , timer programming is greatly simplified because each TV programme has a corresponding code number which your recorder is able to recognise. NOTE: “Guide Prog. Number” (GUIDE PROG) refers to the assigned TV station numbers, according to broadcast area, for ShowV iew timer recording.
20 ENTER SHOWVIEW NUMBER 4 Press OK , and a cursor appears above “GUIDE PROG”. Then, using the NUMBER keys, input the ShowV iew number (found in most TV listings) of a program scheduled to be broadcast on each station on the list from step 1 , starting at the top.

24 Auto SP/LP Timer (J438E only) If, when recording in SP mode, there is not enough tape to record the entire programme, the recorder automatically switches to LP mode to allow complete recording.
25 EDITING Audio Dubbing (J438E only) Audio dubbing replaces the normal audio sound of a previously recorded tape with a new soundtrack. CONNECT AUDIO SOURCE 1 Connect using the AUDIO IN connector on the recorder's front panel. SET INPUT MODE 2 Press NUMBER key "0" to set the input mode.

32 TROUBLESHOOTING Before requesting service for a problem, use this chart and see if you can repair the trouble yourself.
