2 HP All-in-One overview Use the HP All-in-One to qui ckly and easily accomplish ta sks such as making a copy, scanning documents, or printing photos from a memory card. You can access many HP All-in-One func tions directly from the control panel, witho ut turning on your computer.

5 Connection information The HP All-in-On e comes equipped with a USB port so you can connect di rectly to a computer usi ng a USB cable. You can also share the device over an existing home network.

6 Load originals and load paper You can load many diffe rent types and sizes of paper in the HP All-in-On e, including letter or A4 paper, pho to paper, t ransparencies, envelopes, and HP CD /DVD tattoo labels.
Choose papers for printing and copying You can use di fferent types an d sizes of paper in the HP All -in-One. Review the following recommenda tions to get the best printing and copying quality. If you use plain or photo paper, the HP All-in-One can automaticall y detect the paper type and size.

To loa d full-size pa per 1. Slide the paper-w idth guide to its outermost position. NOTE: If you are using letter or A4 paper or smal ler, make sure the tray extender is open all t he way.
3. Insert the stack of pap er into the input tray with th e short edge forward and the prin t side down. Slide th e stack of paper forward until it stops. CAUTION: Make sure that the HP All-in-One is idle and silent when you load paper into th e input tray.
To load 10 x 15 cm ( 4 x 6 inch) photo paper in the input tray 1. Remove all pa per from the input t ray. 2. Insert the stack of photo paper into the far-ri ght side of the input tray with the short edge forwa rd and the print side down. Sl ide the stack of photo pape r forward until it stops.
To load index card s in the input tray 1. Remove all paper f rom the input tray. 2. Insert the stack of cards, prin t side down, into t he far-right side of the input tray. Slide the stack of cards forward until it stops. 3. Slide the paper-w idth guide inward against the st ack of cards until it stops.
3. Slide the pa per-width guide inward again st the stack of enve lopes until it stops. Do not ov erload the input tray; ma ke sure the stack of envel opes fits within the i nput tray and is no t higher than the top of the p aper-width guide.

7 Print from your computer The HP All-i n-One can be used with any soft ware application tha t allows printing. You can print a range of p rojects, such as borderl ess images, newsletters, gree ting cards, iron-on transfers, and post ers.
Make the HP All-in-One the default printer You can set the HP All-i n-One as the default printer to use from all softwa re applications. This means t hat the HP All-in-One is automat ically selected in the printer list w hen you select Print from the Fi le menu in a software a pplication.
5. Click the Features tab. 6. In the Resi zing Options area, click the appropri ate paper size from the Size list. The followin g table lists the suggested paper size set tings for the different typ es of paper you can load in the input tray.
View the prin t resolution The printer sof tware displays the print resolution in d ots per inch (dpi). Th e dpi varies according to th e paper type and print qua lity that you select in the printer software. To view the print resolution 1. Make sure you ha ve paper loaded in the input tray.
To change the p age orientation 1. Make sure you have paper loaded in the input tray. 2. On the F ile menu in your software appli cation, click Print . 3. Make sure the HP All -in-One is the selected printer. 4. Click the butt on that opens the Properti es dialog box.
To preview y our print job 1. Make sure you ha ve paper loaded in the input tray. 2. On the File menu in your soft ware application, click Print . 3. Make sure the HP All-in-One is the selected printer. 4. Click the butt on that opens the Properties dialog box.
Create pr inting shortcuts In additio n to the printing shortcuts that are availa ble in the Printing Short cuts list, you can create your own printing shortc uts.

To print a photo on photo pape r 1. Remove all pap er from the input tra y, and then load the p hoto paper print side down. 2. On the F ile menu in your software appli cation, click Print . 3. Make sure the HP All -in-One is the selected printer. 4. Click the butt on that opens the Properti es dialog box.
6. In the Paper Type drop-down list, click More , and then select HP CD/ DVD tattoo paper from the l ist. 7. Click OK , and then click Print or OK in the Pr int dialog box. Print using Maximum dpi Use Maximum dpi mode to print high-qu ality, sharp images.
4. Click the butt on that opens the Properti es dialog box. Depending on your softw are application, this button m ight be called Pro perties , Options , Printer Setup , Printer , or Pref erences . 5. Click the Features tab. 6. In the Paper savi ng options area, select Manual from the Two-sid ed printing dr op- down list.
Print a multiple-p age document as a booklet The HP All-in-O ne allows you to print your documen t as a small booklet, which you can fold and th en staple together. For best results, design your d ocument to fit on a multiple of four p ages, such as an 8, 12, or 16-page prog ram for a child's school play or for a w edding.
10. Follow the instructions that appear on your screen for rel oading the paper to print on the second side, and then click Contin ue . 11. When the entire do cument has finished printing, fold the stack of paper in hal f, so that the first page is on top, then staple the d ocument along the crease.
7. If you want a border to appear around each pag e image printed o n the sheet of paper, select the Print p age borde rs check box. 8. In the Page order list, cl ick an appropriate page o rder option. The sample o utput graphic is numb ered to show how the pages will be ordered if you select each option.
6. In the Layou t Options area, select Front to Back in the Page Order option. NOTE: If you set your document to prin t on bot h sides of the page, the Front to back optio n is not available. Your docum ent will automatica lly print in the correct order.
6. In the Pa per Type drop-down list, click More , and then sele ct the appropriate paper type. TIP: If you want t o make notations on t he back of the tr ansparencies and erase them later w ithout scratching the original, cl ick the Advanced tab, and select the Mi rror Image check box.
Print a poster You can create a poster by pri nting a document on multiple pa ges. The HP All-in-One prints dotte d lines on some pages to i ndicate where to trim the pages befo re taping them together. To print a poster 1. Make sure you have paper loaded in the input tray.
To print a We b page 1. Make sure you ha ve paper loaded in the input tray. 2. On the File menu in your Web bro wser, click Print . The Print d ialog box appears. 3. Make sure the HP All-in-One is the selected printer. 4. If your Web browse r supports it, select the items on t he Web page that you want to include in t he printout.

8 Use the photo features The HP All-i n-One is equipped with memory card slots which enable yo u to insert a memory card and b egin printing photos from your digital camera without uploa ding your photos to a comp uter first.

6. Press the Copi es button until the number of copies you wan t to print appears on the display. 7. Press the Print button. TIP: While the photo is printing, you can continue scrolling th rough the photos on your memory card. When yo u see a photo you want to print, you can press the Prin t button to add that pho to to the print queue .
Print photos from the HP Photosmart Software You can use the HP Photosmart Software installed on your co mputer to transfer photos from a memo ry card to yo ur computer’s hard drive for ad vanced photo editi ng, sharing photos onli ne, and printing from you r computer.
To edit ph otos 1. Insert a memory card into the appropria te slot on the HP All- in-One. The software ope ns on your computer. 2. Click View , and then fo llow the onscreen prompts to tr ansfer your photos to the computer fo r viewing and editing .

9 Use the copy features The HP All-in -One allows you to prod uce high-qual ity color and black- and-white copi es on plain or phot o paper. You can enlarge o r redu ce the size of an or iginal to fit a specif ic paper size, adju st the copy quality, and make high-quality cop ies of photos, in cluding borderless copies.
Make multiple copies of the same original You can set the number of copies from the control pan el of the HP All-in-One or from t he HP Photosma rt Software.
To make a bord erless copy of a p hoto from the control panel 1. Load photo paper in the in put tray. NOTE: The HP All-in-One a utomatically detects the type of paper you ar e using. If you do not use pho to paper, your copy will include a white border around on e or more edges.

10 Use the scan features Scanning is the proce ss of converting text and pict ures into an electronic format for your computer. You can scan almost anything (photos, magazine articles, and text docume nts) on the HP All- in-One.
To scan to a compute r 1. Load your original print side down on the right front corner of the glass. 2. Ensure that th ere are no memory cards in serted in the memory card slots on the HP All-in-On e. 3. Press Scan . A preview image of t he scan appears on your computer, where you can edit it .

11 Maintain the HP All-in-One The HP All- in-One requi res little mainte nance. Sometimes yo u might want to clea n the glass and lid backing to remove surface dust and ensure t hat your copies and scans remain clear. You w ill also need to replace, align, or clean your print cartridges from time to time.
Clean the lid backing Minor debris can accumula te on the white document backin g located underneath the l id of the HP All-in -One. To clean the lid b acking 1.
To print a self-test report 1. Load lette r or A4 unused plain whit e paper into the input t ray. 2. Press and hold the Cancel butt on and then press the Start Copy Color bu tton. The HP All-i n-One prints a self-test repo r t, which might indicate the source of the printing problem.

Check the e stimated ink levels You can easily check the in k supply level to determine how soo n you might need to replace a print cartrid ge. The ink supply level sho ws an estimate of the a mount of ink remaining in the print cartridges. TIP: You can al so print a self-test report to see if your print cartridges might need to be replac ed.
To replace the pr int cartridges 1. Make sure th e HP All-in-On e is on. CAUTION: If the HP All -in-One is off when yo u open the print cartridge do or to access the print cart ridges, the HP All-in-One will not release the cartridges for changing.
7. Remove the new print cartridge from its packaging an d, being careful to tou ch only the black plast ic, gently remove the plastic tape b y using the pink pull tab.
9. Close the p r int cart ridge door. If you instal led a new print cartridge, t he HP All-in-One prints a print cartridge alignm ent page. 10. When prompted, ensure pla in white paper is loaded in the input tray, th en press the button next to OK .
One came with a print cartridg e protector, you can use an airtig ht plastic contai ner to protect your pri nt cartridge. NOTE: If you use a plasti c container, make sure the ink noz zles on the print cartridge do not touch th e plastic.
NOTE: If you remove an d reinstall the same print cartridge, t he HP All-in-One will not prompt you to alig n the print cartridges. The HP All-in-One remembers the alignment values for that print cartridge, so you do n ot need to realign the prin t cartridges.
To clean the print cartridg es from the HP Ph otosmart Softwa re 1. Load lette r, A4, or legal unused plain w hite paper into the in put tray. 2. In the HP Solution Center, click Settings , point to Print Settings , an d then click Printer Tool box . NOTE: You can also ope n the Printer Toolbox from t he Print Properties dialo g box.
3. Lightly press dow n on the print cartridg e to release it, and then pull it toward yo u out of the slot. NOTE: Do not remove both print cartridges at the sam e time. Remove an d clean each print cartrid ge one at a time. D o not leave a prin t cartridge outside the HP All- in-One for more than 30 minutes.
NOTE: Clean the area around the ink nozzles only i f you continue to see streaks and smudges on your prin ted pages after you have already cl eaned the print cartridges by usi ng the software you installed with the HP All-in -One.
8. Repeat if nece ssary for the other print cart ridge. 9. Gently cl ose the print cartri dge door an d plug the powe r cord into the b ack of the HP All-in-On e.
12 Shop for printing supplies You can order HP products, such as recommen ded types of paper and print cartridges, online from th e HP Web site. This section co ntains the following topi cs: • Order.

• Check the USB cable. If you are using an older cable, it might not be working properly. Try connectin g it to another product to see if th e USB cable works. If you experience problems, th e USB cable mi ght need to be re placed. Also verify that the cab le does not exceed 3 met ers (9.
• Do not reattach the pr otective tape once it has been removed from t he print cartridge. Reattaching t he plastic tape might damag e the print cartridge. Place t he print cartridge in the HP All-in-O ne immediately after removing th e plastic tape.
• Do not combine dif ferent paper types and paper sizes in the input tray; the entire stack of paper in the input tray must be the same size and type. • Store printed p hotos under glass or in a st orage book to prevent bleed ing over time from high hu midity.
2. Gently pul l the paper o ut of the rollers . CAUTION: If the paper tears when you are removi ng it from the rollers, check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces o f paper that m i ght b e remaining inside th e device. If you do not remove all th e pieces of paper fro m the HP All-in-One, more paper jams are li kely to occur.
2. Reinsert th e print cartridge by slidin g it forward into the slot. Then push the print cartridge forward until it clicks into the socket. 3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 f or the tri-color print cartridge on th e left side. 4. If the problem persist s , print a self-test report to determine if there is a problem with the print cartridges.
To print a self-test report 1. Load lette r or A4 unused plain whit e paper into the input t ray. 2. Press and hold the Cancel butt on and then press the Start Copy Color bu tton. The HP All-i n-One prints a self-test repo r t, which might indicate the source of the printing problem.
4. Click Clean the Print Car tridges . 5. Follow th e prompts until you are satisfied with the qual ity of the output, and t hen click Done . If copy or print qual ity still seems poor after you clean the pri nt cartridges, try cleaning the print cartridge contacts before re placing the affected pri nt cartridge.
To replace the print cartridges 1. Make sure the HP All -in-One is on. CAUTION: If the HP All-in-One is off when you open the prin t cartridge door to access the print cartridges, the HP All-in-One will not release the cartridges for changing.
7. Remove the n ew print cartridge from i ts packaging and, being careful to touch onl y the black plastic, gently re move the plastic tape by using the pink pull tab.
9. Close the print cartridge door. If you installed a new p r int ca rtridge, the HP All-in-One print s a print cartridge alignment page. 10. When promp ted, ensure plain white paper is l oaded in the input tray, the n press the button next to OK .
4. Turn off the HP All -in-One, wait one mi nute, then restart it. 5. Reinstall th e HP All-in-One software. CAUTION: Do not co nnect the USB cab le to the comp uter until prom pted by the software installation screen.
Cause: You pressed the On button too quickly. Solution: The HP All-in-O ne might not respond if you pre ss the On bu tton too quickly. Press the On button once. It might t ake a few minutes for the HP All-in -One to turn on. If you press the On button again during th is time, you might turn the device off.

Solution: To retry the plug and pl ay 1. Verify that the control panel overla y is firmly attached, u nplug the HP All-i n-One power cord, an d then plug it in again. 2. Verify that the USB cab le and power cord are plugged in. 3. Click Retry to retry the plug and pla y setup.

To uninstall fr om a Windows computer, method 1 1. Disconnec t the HP All-in-One from your computer. Do no t connect the HP All-in-One to your computer un til after you have reinstall ed the software. 2. On the Wind ows taskbar, click Start , Programs or All Pr ograms , HP , Photosmart C4200 All -in-One series , Uninstal l .
1. Insert the HP All-in-One CD-ROM into your computer’s CD-ROM dri ve and then start the Setup pr ogram. 2. Disconnect th e HP All-in-One from your computer. 3. Colors run into each other on the printout Cause: The p rint or copy quality set ting is set too high for the type o f paper loaded in the HP All -in-One. Solution: Check the quali ty setting. Use a lower quali ty setting to decrease the amount of in k used f or printing or copying.
Solution: Make su re you have paper lo aded correctly. For more information, see: “ Load pap er” on page 21 Cause: The copy or print quali ty type setting on the HP Al l-in-One is set too low. Solution: Ch eck the quality setting. Use a higher quality setting to increase the amount of i nk used for printing.
For more informati on on print cartridges, see “ Troubleshoot print cartridges” on page 83 . Cause: The pri nt quality setting on the HP All -in-One is set too low. Solution: Check the quality sett ing. Use a higher quality sett ing to increase the amount of in k used f or printing.
Solution: If t he paper you are using is too fib rous, the ink applied by the H P All-in- One might not fully cove r the surface of the paper. Use HP Premi um Papers or any other paper type th at is appropriate for the HP All -in-One.
Cause: More th an one type of paper is loa ded in the input tray. Solution: Load only one type of pap er at a time. Paper is no t picked up from the input tray Cause: There i s not enough paper in the in put tray. Solution: If the HP All-in -One is out of paper or there are on ly a few sheets remaining, lo ad more paper in the input tray.
Cause: The wrong type of enve lope is loaded. Solution: Do not use shiny or embossed enve lopes or envelopes that have cla sps or windows. Borderless pr inting produces unexpected res ults Cause: Printing a borderless image from a non-HP softwa re application produces unexpected results.
Solution: Turn the HP All -in-One off, remove any obj ects that are blocking the print carriage (i ncluding any pa cking material s), and then turn the HP All-in-O ne on again.
Solution: The printer drive r status might have changed to ei ther offline or stop printing . To check the p rinter driver status 1. In the HP Solutio n Center, click the device tab. 2. Click Settings . 3. Click Status . If the status is offline or stop printing , change the status to ready .
Some documents ta ke a long time to print. If nothing has printed several minutes after you sent a print job to the HP All-in-One, check your comput er to see if there are any messages. Cause: The HP All-in-One is not the sel ected printer. Solution: Make sure th e HP All-in-On e is th e selected printer in your soft ware application.
Solution: Turn t he HP All-in-One off, remove any ob jects that are blocking the print carriage (includin g any packing materials), and then turn the HP All-in-One on again. Cause: The HP All-in-One is out of pape r. Solution: Loa d paper in the input tray.
Solution: Remove the sta ck of paper from the i nput tray, reload th e paper, and then slide the pap er width guide inward until i t stops at the edge of th e paper. For more information, see: “ Load pape r” on page 21 Cause: A stack of e nvelopes is loaded incorre ctly.
Solution: Make sure the layou t of the document you are t rying to print fits on a pa per size supported by the HP All-in-One. To previ ew the print layout 1. Load the correct pap er size into th e input tray. 2. Preview your pr int job before sending it to the HP All-in-One.
Solution: If the HP All-in-One has only a few sheets remaining , load more pap er in the input tray. If there is plenty of paper in the input tray, remove the paper, tap the stack of pape r against a flat surface, and reload th e paper into the input t ray.
Memory card troubleshooting Use this sectio n to solve these memory card prob lems: • My memory ca rd no longe r works in my di gital camera • The HP All-in-O ne does not read the memory card • .
Solution: Check the c omputer screen for an error message tell ing you that the images on the memory card are corrup ted. If the file system on the card is corrupt, reformat the me mory card in your digital camera. CAUTION: Reformatting the memory card w ill delete any photos stored on the card.
Solution: Turn the HP All-i n-One on. Cause: The computer is turned off. Solution: Turn the computer on. Cause: The HP All-in-One is not properly con nected to the computer. Solution: Check th e connection from the HP All-in-One to your computer. Verify that the US B cable is securely plugged into the USB port on the back of th e HP All- in-One.

Solution: Resize to Fit can o nly enlarge the original up to the maximum percentag e allowed by your mo del.
Solution: Load the origina l print side down on the right f ront corner of the glass as shown below. To copy a photo, position the pho to on the glass so that t he long edge of the phot o is along the front ed ge of the glass. Cause: Debris might be stuck on the glass or on the back of the documen t lid.
The printout is b lank Cause: The original is pla ced incorrectly on the glass. Solution: Load th e original print side down on t he right front corner of the glass as shown below. Cause: The print cartridges nee d to be cleaned or might be out of in k.

Out of disk space Cause: There i s not enough available mem ory on your comput er to perform the task. Solution: Close some ap plications and try the t ask again. Card acc ess error Cause: There a re two or more memory ca rds inserted into the HP All-in-One at the same time.
Solution: Make su re you fully insert the me mory card into the appropriate slot on the HP All-i n -One. If the memory card is not inserted properly, the HP All-i n-One will not respond and the green Phot o light (near the memory card slots) w ill blink rapidly.
Paper o rientation error Cause: Paper in the in put tray is in la ndscape orientati on. Solution: Insert paper in to the input tray with th e short edge forward and t he prin t side down. Slide the paper forward until it st ops. Cannot l oad paper from input tray Cause: There i s not enough paper in the in put tray.
Cause: The print carriage is blocked. Solution: Open t he print cartridge door to access the print carriage area. Remove any objects th at are blocking the print carriage, includi ng any packin g materials. Turn the HP All-in-One of f and then turn it on again.
Solution: If the HP All-in-One is not properly connect ed to the compute r, communicat ion errors can occu r. Make sure the USB cable is sec urely connected to the HP All-in-On e and the computer, as show n below.
