2 Hardware Upgrades Serviceability Features The com puter incl udes feat ures tha t make it ea sy to upgrad e and servic e. No tools are needed for most of th e install ation procedu res descri bed in t his chapter .
Unlock ing t he Smar t Cover Lock NOT E: The Smart Cove r Lock is an optional feat ure inclu ded on some m odels only . The Sm art Cover Lock is a sof tware- control lable cov er lock, contro lled by the setup pa ssword. Thi s lock preve nts unauthoriz ed access to the int ernal comp onents.

Remov ing the Comp uter Ac cess Pa nel 1. Remove/di senga ge any security device s that pro hibit op ening the comp uter. 2. Remove a ll re movable media , such a s compac t discs o r USB flash d rives, fr om the compute r. 3. Turn of f the c omputer properl y throug h the o perating syst em, the n turn off any exte rnal devices .
Replacin g the Compu ter Acce ss Panel Slide t he lip on the front end o f the access panel un der the lip on t he front of the chass is (1) then press the back end o f the a ccess pan el onto the u nit so tha t it l ocks i nto place (2).
Removi ng the Fr ont Bezel 1. Remove/di senga ge any security device s that pro hibit op ening the comp uter. 2. Remove a ll re movable media , such a s compac t discs o r USB flash d rives, fr om the compute r. 3. Removing Bezel Blanks On some mod els, there ar e bezel bla nks cover ing the 3.5- inch and 5.25 -inc h external dr ive ba ys that need to be re moved before i nstall ing a drive. To rem ove a be zel blank : 1. Remove the acc ess panel and fr ont beze l.
Replaci ng the Front Beze l Inse rt the th ree ho oks on the bottom s ide of th e beze l into th e rect angular ho les on the chassis (1) th en rotate t he top side of the bezel on to the cha ssis ( 2) and s nap it i nto pl ace.
Using the Small Form Fa ctor Comp uter in a Tower Orientation The S mall Fo rm Fact or compute r ca n be u sed in a tower orientati on wi th an o ptional to wer stan d that can be purchas ed from HP. 1. Remove /disengag e any secu rity de vice s that pro hibit ope ning the comp uter.
Inst alling Addi tional Memo ry The com puter com es with double data rat e 3 sync hronous dynamic random acces s memor y (DDR3 - SDRAM) dual i nline memory modul es (DIM Ms). DIMMs The memo ry socke ts on the syst em board can be populated wit h up to four indus try-s tandard DIMMs.
Populating DIMM Sockets There are four DIMM soc kets on the syst em board, with two sock ets per channe l. The socke ts are labeled DIMM1 , DIMM2 , DIMM3 , and D IMM4. Soc kets DI MM1 and DIMM2 oper ate in memory c hanne l A. Sock ets DI MM3 a nd DIMM 4 oper ate i n memory cha nnel B.
and the remain der is assig ned to single cha nnel. Fo r optimal spe ed, the channel s shou ld be balanced so t hat the la rges t amoun t of m emory is spr ead be tween the two cha nnels. If o ne cha nnel will have more mem ory than the other , the larger amo unt shoul d be assigned to Channel A.

8. Open both latch es of th e memo ry m odule soc ket (1) , and in sert t he memo ry mo dule into the sock et (2). Figure 2-10 Install ing a DIM M NOTE: A memo ry m odule ca n be instal led i n only o ne way . Match th e notch on the modul e with the tab on the me mory s ocket .
Removi ng or Install ing an Ex pans ion Card The com puter has one PCI e xpansion slot, two PCI Ex press x1 expansio n slots , and one PC I Express x16 expa nsion slot .
6. Remove th e access panel. 7. Locate the c orrect va cant exp ansio n socket o n the sy stem bo ard and the corr esponding expan sion slot on the back of the co mputer chassis. 8. Release the sl ot cover rete ntion latch that secure s the PCI slot co vers by lift ing the green t ab on the latch and rota ting the l atch to th e open positio n.
9. Before install ing an expa nsion card , remove the expansi on slot c over or the existin g expans ion card. a. If you ar e inst alling an expan sion c ard in a vacan t sock et, rem ove the app ropri ate exp ansio n slot co ver on th e back of the ch assis.
b. If you ar e re moving a stand ard PCI card or PCI E xpress x 1 card, hold the ca rd at eac h end , and car efully roc k it back an d forth un til th e connec tors pul l fre e from th e socket. Pull the expansi on ca rd stra ight u p from the soc ket (1) then away from the ins ide of the chas sis to releas e it from the c hassis fr ame (2) .
c. If you ar e removi ng a PC I Expr ess x16 card , pull t he rete ntion a rm on the b ack of the exp ansio n socket a way fro m the car d and ca refull y rock th e card b ack and forth unt il the co nnecto rs pull free fro m the sock et.
12. To install a new expansi on ca rd, h old the card j ust ab ove the e xpansion soc ket on the sy stem board then move the card towar d the rear of the chas sis (1) so tha t the brack et on the card is aligned wi th the open slot on th e rear of the chass is.
16. If the compute r was on a sta nd, repl ace th e stand. 17. Reconnect the power cord and turn on the co mputer. 18. Lock any s ecurity d evice s that were disen gaged when the a ccess panel was remove d. 19. Reconfigure the computer, if necess ary.
Inst alling and Removing Drives When ins talli ng additiona l driv es, follow thes e guidelin es: ● The prima ry Ser ial ATA (SATA) hard d rive must be conne cted to the dark bl ue pr imary SATA connecto r on the syst em board labeled SATA0. ● Connect a SATA optical drive to the white SA TA co nnector o n the syste m boa rd l abeled S ATA1.
CAUTION: To p revent los s of wor k and da mage to th e com puter or dr ive: If yo u are ins erting or remov ing a driv e, shut down th e opera ting sy stem pr operly , turn off the co mputer , and unpl ug the power cord . Do no t remove a dr ive whil e the compu ter is on or in st andby mode.
Removing an External 5.25-inch Drive CAUTION: All re movab le media should be taken out of a dri ve before rem oving the driv e from the comput er. To remo ve a 5.25-inc h external drive: 1. Remove/di senga ge any security device s that pro hibit op ening the comp uter.
8. If removi ng an optical d rive, di sconn ect the po wer cabl e (1) an d data cable (2) fro m the r ear of the optical driv e. Figu re 2- 22 Disc onnecting the Po wer and Data Ca bles 9. Rotate t he drive cage back do wn to its no rmal pos ition . CAUTION: Be careful not to pin ch any cables or wires when rotati ng the drive cag e down.
10. Press down on the green d rive ret ainer button l ocated on t he left s ide of the d rive to di senga ge the drive from the d rive c age (1). Whil e pre ssing th e drive retainer button, slide the d rive ba ck unti l it stops, the n lift it up and out of the dr ive ca ge (2).
8. Install fo ur M3 m etric gu ide s crews in the low er ho les on e ach side of the drive. HP ha s pro vided four ext ra M3 metric guid e scre ws on the front of the cha ssis, u nder t he fro nt beze l.
10. Rotate the drive cage to its upr ight pos ition. Figure 2-27 Rotating the Drive Cage Up 11. Connect the SATA data cab le to the white syste m board co nnecto r labeled SA TA1.
14. Rotate the drive c age ba ck down to its normal posit ion. CAUTION: Be careful not to pin ch any cables or wires when rotati ng the drive cag e down. Figu re 2- 29 Rotating the Drive C age Do wn 15. Replace the acce ss p anel. 16. If the compute r was on a sta nd, repl ace th e stand.

Disconne ct the drive cab les from the r ear of th e drive, or, if y ou are r emovi ng a media card rea der, disconne ct the USB and 1394 cables f rom t he syste m board as in dicated i n the follo wing illu stratio ns. NOTE: On so me mod els, the media card read er does not in clude a 139 4 port or c able.
3. Press down on the green drive r etain er butto n located on the le ft side of the d rive to di sengage th e drive from the d rive ca ge (1 ). Whil e press ing the d rive r etainer b utton, s lide the dri ve back until it stops, then lift it up a nd out of the drive cage (2) .

4. Disconne ct the pow er c ord from th e power outlet a nd di sconnec t any e xterna l devic es. CAUTION: Regardl ess o f the power- on stat e, volta ge is always pr esent on the system boar d as long as t he sy stem is plugg ed into an acti ve AC outlet .

12. Align the gui de sc rews wi th the slo ts on t he cha ssis driv e cag e, press the ha rd driv e down in to the bay, then slide it ba ck u ntil it stops a nd lo cks in pl ace. Figu re 2- 39 Installing the Hard Dr ive 13. Connect the power and data ca bles to the back of the har d drive.

4. Remove the fo ur screws from th e bottom o f the h ard drive carri er. Figu re 2- 42 Removin g the Security Screws 5. Slide the hard drive back to dis conne ct it from the carr ier then lift it up and out of the carrier .
6. Place th e new hard dri ve in th e carr ier then slide the har d drive back s o that it s eats in the SATA connecto r on the carrier's c ircuit b oard. Be s ure the con nector on th e hard d rive is pre ssed all t he way into the conne ctor on the carrier's ci rcuit boar d.
8. Place the therm al sens or on top of the hard drive i n a posit ion tha t does n ot cov er the lab el (1) an d attach the thermal sensor to the top of the ha rd drive with the ad hesive strip (2).

B Battery Replacement The ba ttery tha t com es with t he com puter provide s pow er to the real- time clock. When replac ing t he battery , use a ba ttery equi valent to the batte ry origi nally ins talled in the comput er. The com puter co mes with a 3-volt lithium coin cel l battery.
NOTE: On some computer mo dels, i t may be neces sary to r emove an internal com ponent to gai n access to the battery. 8. Depending on the ty pe of battery hold er on the system board, comple te the follo wing inst ructio ns to replace the batter y. Type 1 a.
