To connect the HP Photosmart to an integra ted wireless WLAN 802.11 n etwork, you will need the followi ng: A wireless 802.11 network t hat includes a wireless rout er or access point. A desktop computer o r laptop with either wirel ess networking support, or a network interface card ( NIC).
▲ Turn on the wireless radio for the HP Photosmart and the wireless rad io on your computer. On your computer, con nect to the network name (SSID ) hpse tup , which is the default ad hoc netw ork created by the HP Photosmart. OR ▲ Use an ad hoc network profi le on your computer to connect to the product.
e .I n t h e Network key box, type a WEP key that ha s exactly 5 or exactly 13 alphanumeric (ASCI I) characters. For example, if you ente r 5 characters, you might enter ABCDE or 12345 . Or, if you enter 13 char acters, you might enter ABCDEF12345 67 .
NOTE: If your computer is con figured to connect to a series of ne twork drives, make sure that your computer is currently connected to these dri ves before installing the software.

To install and prin t using the Widcomm stack 1. Make sure that you have i nstalled the product software on t he computer. NOTE: The purpose of inst alling the software is to make sure the printer driver is available for th e Bluetooth ® connecti on.

5 Paper basics You can load many differe nt types and sizes of paper in t he HP Photosmart, including letter or A4 pa per, photo paper, tra nsparencies, and envelopes.
NOTE: At this ti me, some porti ons of the HP Web site are a vailable in English only. Recommended papers for printing If you want the best print quality, HP recommends u sing HP papers that are specif ically designed for t he type of project you are printing.

To print forms from the control panel 1. Make sure you ha ve paper loaded in the input tray. 2. On the Home Screen, touch t he right arrow to view more opti ons. 3. Touch Quick F orms . 4. Touch the up or down arrow t o scroll through the forms and templ ates.
View the print resolution The printer software displ ays the print resolution in dots per inch (dpi). The dpi varies according to the paper typ e and print quality that you select i n the printer software. To view the print resolution 1. Make sure you have pa per loaded in the input tra y.

To check the ink levels from the HP Photosmart Software 1. In the HP So lution Cen ter, click Settings , point to Print Settings , and then cl ick Printer Toolbo x .

NOTE: Ink level warnings and indicato rs provide estimates for planning purposes only. When you receive a low-ink warning message, consider having a replacement cartrid ge available to avoid possible printin g delays. You do not need to replace the i nk cartridges until p rint quality beco mes unacceptable.
◦ Clean the printh ead, and then print t his diagnostic page ag ain. ◦ If cleaning the printhead does not solve t his print quality issue, replace the cartridge corresp onding to the stre aked bar. NOTE: If replacing the cartridge does not solve this print quality issue, contact HP support for service.
If the lines are j agged, align the printer, an d then print this diagno stic page again. product to your computer before the software installation screen prompted you to do so, you must follow t hese steps: Troubleshootin g common setup issues 1. Disconnect the USB cable from the c omputer. 2. Uninstall the softwa re (if you have alre ady installed it).

CAUTION: If the product still does not turn on, it might have a mechan ical failure. Unplug the product from the power outlet. Contact HP supp ort for service . Go to: www.hp. com/support . If prompt ed, choose your country/region, and then click Contact HP for in formation on calling for techni cal support.
Cause: The product might not have been turned on. If this did not so lve the issue, try the next solution. Step 2: Set your produc t as the default printer Solution: Check your com puter documentation to change your p roduct to be the default printer.
NOTE: You will be prompte d to set both the language and the country/region settings, by using the following procedure. To set your langua ge and country/region 1. On the Home Screen, touch the right arrow to view mo re options. 2. Touch Setup . 3. Touch Preferences .
3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs (or click Uninstall a progr am ). 4. Select HP Photosmart A ll-in-One Driv er Software , an d then click Change / Remove . Follow the onscree n instructions. 5. Restart your computer. NOTE: It is important th at you disconn ect the produ ct before restar ting your computer.
Check cartridges Follow thes e steps. • Step 1: Make sure yo u are using ge nuine HP ink cartri dges • Step 2: Check the ink levels Step 1: Make sure you are usi ng genuine HP ink cartridg es Solution: Check to see if your ink cartridge s are genuine H P ink cartridges.
Step 2: Load the stack of p aper correctly Solution: Remove the stack of paper from the input tray, reload the paper, and th en slide the paper wid th guide inward until it st ops at the edge of the pape r. NOTE: Do not leave unu sed photo paper in the in put tray.
Step 2: Clean the pri nthead Solution: If the previou s solutions did not resolve the issue, try cleaning the printhead. To clean the printhead from the HP Photo smart Software 1. Load letter , A4, or legal unused plain whi te paper into the main i nput tray.
Check the print settings Solution: Try the following: • Check the print setti ngs to see if the color settings a re incorrect. For example, check to see if the do cument is set to print in grayscale. Or, check to see if advanced color sett ings s uch as saturation , brightness, or co lor tone, are set to modify the appearance of colors.
Cause: The product expe rienced an error. Contact HP suppor t for service Solution: If you have comp leted all of the steps provided i n the previous solu tions and are still having a p roblem, contact HP support fo r service. Go to: www.hp. com/support .
After the memory card has been inserted prop erly, the Photo light will blink for a few seconds, an d then remain lit. Cause: The memory card wa s inserted backward s or up side down. If this did not so lve the issue, try the next solution. Step 2: Remove the ad ditional memory card Solution: You can insert only on e memory card at a time.
If this did not solve the issue, try the n ext solution. Solution 2: Check the co nnection from the product to your computer Solution: Check the connection fr om the product to your computer. Verify that the USB cable is s ecurely plugge d into the USB po rt on the back of th e product.
Solution 2: Save the photos in a supported file format Solution: Make sure the digital came ra is savin g photos in a file forma t that the PictBridge transfer fe ature supports (Exif/JPEG, JPEG, and DP OF). Cause: The images were not in a suppo rted format.
Text format is incorr ect Solution: Some applications cannot ha ndle framed text formatting. Frame d text is one of the scan do cument settings in the software. It m aintains complex layouts, such as multiple columns from a newsl etter, by pu tting the text in different frames (b oxes) in the destin ation application .
percentage allowed b y your model. Enlarging a passport photo by 200% might not enlarge it enou gh for it to fit a full-si ze page. If you want to make a large copy of a small original, scan the original into the com puter, resize the imag e in the HP scanning software, a nd then print a copy of the en larged image.
Cause: The revisi on number of the product fi rmware did not match th e revision number of the soft ware. Memory is full Solution: Try making fewer copies at a time . Cause: The docume nt you were copying exceeded the memory of t he product. Photo tra y problem Try the follow ing solutions.
Cause: The last time the product was used, i t was not turned off properly. I f the product is turned off by turnin g off the switch on a power strip or by using a wall switch, the product can be damaged. Missing HP Photo smart Software Try the following solu tions.
For more information o n setting up the product and connecti ng it to your computer, see the setup instruct ions guide that came with the p roduct. Cause: The product was not properly connected to th e computer. File messages The following is a list of file-related error me ssages: • Error reading or writin g the file • Unreadable files.
Solution 2: Print photos from the computer Solution: Take some phot os with your digital camera, or if you previously saved photos on your comput er, you can print them using th e product software. Cause: No photos were found on t he memory card. File not found Solution: Close some ap plications and try the task aga in.
CAUTION: Reformatting the memory card wil l delete any photos stored on th e card. If you have previously tra nsferred the photos from your memory card to a computer, try pr inting the photos from th e computer. Otherwise, yo u will need to retake any photos yo u might have lost.
Solution 3: Push the memory c ard all the way forward Solution: Remove the memory card and reinsert it in the memory card slot until it stops. Cause: You had not fully inserted the memory card.
If more than one memory card is inserted , an error message will appear on the di splay. Remove the additi onal memory card to resolve the pr oblem. Cause: There were two or more memory cards inserted into the product at the same time.
Paper upside down Solution: Load paper in the i nput tray print side do wn. Cause: Paper i n the input tray was up side down. Paper orientati on error Solution: Insert paper into the input tray wit h the short edge forward and the print side down. Sl ide the paper forward unt il it stops.
Printing cannot occur w ithout one of each type o f ink cartridge inserted int o the correct slot. For more information, see: “ Replace the cart ridges” on page 62 Cause: The indi cated ink cartridges were inserted int o the wrong slots. General prin ter error Try the follow ing solutions.
• Solution 1: Ch eck to see if the ink cartridge s are compatible • Solution 2: Co ntact HP support Solution 1: Check to see if the ink cartridges ar e compatible Solution: Check to make sure you are using the correct ink cartridge s for your product.
CAUTION: HP recommends that you do not remove a n ink cartridge until a replacement is ready to install. If you have installed a refilled or remanufactu red cartridge, or a cartrid ge that has been used in anot her product, the ink level indi cator might be inaccurate or unavailable.
The print carri age moves to the center of the prod uct. NOTE: Wait until the print carriage stops moving before p roceeding. 3. Make sure the ink cartridges ar e installed in t he correct slots. Match the shape of the i con and color of the ink cartridge with the slot that has the same shap ed icon and co lor.
8. Press the ink cartridge back dow n into place. The tab should make a snap ping noise when the ink ca rtridge is correctly seated. If the ink cartridge di d not make a snapping noise, t he tab might need to be readjusted . 9. Remove the ink cartrid ge from the slot.
in incorrectly seated ink cartri dges and problems printing. The latch must remain down in order to corre ctly install the ink cartridges. Cause: The print carriage latch was not closed properly . If this did not so lve the issue, try the next solution.
4. Hold the ink cartridg e by its sides with the bottom poi nting up and locate the electrical contacts on the ink cartridge. The electrical cont acts are four small re ctangles of copper or g old-colored metal on the bottom of t he ink cartridge. 1 Ink window 2 Electrical contacts 5.
9. Close the ink cart ridge door, and check if the error messa ge has gone away. 10. If you still rece ive the error message, turn the pro duct off, and then on a gain. If you still receive t his message after cleaning the cart ridge contacts, you might have a damaged cartridge.
Solution 5: Contact HP s upport Solution: Contact HP support for service. Go to: www.hp. com/support . If prompted, choose your country/reg ion, and then click Contact HP for information on calling for techni cal support. Cause: The product had a problem.
If this did not so lve the issue, try the next solution. Solution 2: Make sure the ink cartridges are in stalled correctly Solution: Make sure all of the ink cartridges ar e properly installed. Refer t o the following steps t o resolve this error. To make sure the ink cartridges are properl y installed 1.
4. Run your finger alon g the top of the ink cartridges t o locate any cartridges that are not snapped completely down. 5. Press down on any cartridges that a re sticking up.
11. Reinstall t he ink cartridge. It should now snap down in to place. 12. Close the ink cartri dge access door, and check if the error message has gone away. 13. If you still rece ive the error message, turn the pro duct off, and then on a gain. Cause: The ink cartridges we re not installed properly.
HP recommends tha t you use genuine HP ink cartri dges. Genuine HP in k cartridges are designed and teste d with HP printers to help you easil y produce great results, time after time. NOTE: HP cannot guarantee t he quality or reliability of non-HP supp lies.
Previously used genui ne HP cartridge Solution: Check the print qu ality of the current print job. If it is not satisfactory, try cleaning the pri nthead to see if that improves the quality. To clean the p rinthead from the HP Photosmart S oftware 1. Load letter, A4, or legal unused plain white paper i nto the main input tray .
3. Remove all of the ink cartridges and place the m on a piece of paper with t he ink opening point ing up. 4. Lift the latch h andle on the print carria ge until it stops.
6. Clean the printhead. There are three a reas of the printhead tha t need to be cleaned: the pl astic ramps on both sides of the i nk nozzles, the edge between the nozzles and the electric al contacts, and the electrical contacts.
b . Use a fresh, lightly dampened, l int-free cloth to wipe any accumulated ink and debris from the edg e between the nozzles and the con tacts. c . Use a fresh, light ly dampened, lint-free cl oth to wipe the plast ic ramps on both sides of the nozzles.
