Howe v er , as with any electrical equipment, the best wa y to ensure safe operation is to operate them according to the agency guidelines that f ollow .

2 - 1 2 Getting Star ted Out of the Bo x V erify that the car ton contains the follo wing items: • Dolphin 6000 mobile terminal • Battery pack (3.7V Li-ion) • Quick Start Guide Note: If you ordered accessories fo r your terminal, verify that th ey are included with the order.
2 - 2 3. Remove the battery by lifting the tab. Note: Gentle force is required to lift and remove the battery from the battery bay. Charging the Batteries P ower f or the Dolphin 6000 ter minal comes from the bat ter y pack, which is accessed from the back panel.
2 - 3 4. Plug the power adapter into a standard wa ll outlet. The LED on front of the term inal flashes and illuminates red when the terminal begins the initializing boot process. Booting the T erminal The terminal boots when power is applied and the PWR button is pressed f or three seconds.
2 - 4 Home Screen After the terminal initializes the first time, the Home screen appears. Navigation Bar The Navigation bar is located at the top of the scr een. The activ e program and current time are shown. Command Bar The Command bar is located at the bottom of the screen.

2 - 6 Batter y has a low charge . Batter y has a very low charge and requires charging. The terminal is r unning on external power . If a batter y pack is installed, battery is charging in the backg round. The terminal is not connected to external powe r .
2 - 7 Set Time Zone, Time , and Date 1. On the Home screen, tap the time and date section. The Clock & Alarms menu opens. 2. Select the Time tab to set the system clock.
2 - 8 4. Set the correct time zone from the drop-down menu. 5. Set the correct time and date in the remaining fields and tap OK to save the settings. P op-Up Menus P op-up menus allow you to choose an action f or a selected file. 1. Tap and hold the stylus on the action to open the pop-up menu.
2 - 9 File Explorer Use the File Explorer to find and mov e files. 1. Tap > File Explorer . 2. Locate a file. 3. To move a file, hold the st ylus on the file to bring up the menu shown below. Tap Cut or Copy on the pop-up menu. 4. Navigate to the desired destination.

P ower K ey Pressing and holding the P ower ke y for 3 seconds turns the ter minal on. Pressing and holding the P ower k ey f or 5 seconds tur ns the ter minal off.
3 - 4 Bac k View Item Description Image/Scan Engine Window The image engine reads and decodes linear , stacked lin ear (e.g., PDF417), and 1D matrix bar code symbologies. F or greater accuracy , the ter minal contains a laser aimer . Refer to Using the Scan Image Engine on page 4-1 .
3 - 5 Left View Color Camera Provides easy picture captio n with A utomated Camera Control (ACC). Additional f eatures include automate d picture profiles and an Application Programming Interf ace (API). Camera Flash Can be used and is contro lled b y the terminals color camera.
3 - 6 Right View Memory Card Installation P erform the following to install the memory card: 1. Power down the terminal. 2. Unlock the battery door. 3. Remove the battery door and the battery. 4. Slide the latch toward top of terminal to unlock the SIM card.
3 - 7 7. Unlock the memory card latch by s liding the latch away from serial numb er label located in the battery well. 8. Lift the latch up to expose the MicroSD or MicroSDHC socket. 9. Remove and discard SD card blank and replace with SD card to be installed.
3 - 8 13. Insert the SIM card into the SIM card socket. Note: Make sure the interface on the SIM ca rd is connected to the interface in the socket. Align the chamfered corner on the card with the chamfered corner of the socket. 14. Close the SIM card latch.
3 - 9 Bottom P anel I/O Connector The I/O connector provides the f ollowing: • Supports DC charging of the terminal and battery • Facilitates RS232 serial communications interf ace, including RX, .
3 - 10 Honeyw ell also mandates use of a proper styl us, which is one that has a stylus tip r adius of no less than 0.8 mm. Use of the Honeyw ell stylus included with the ter m inal is recommended at all times.

4 - 2 Suppor ted Bar Code Symbologies Decoding Decode a Bar Code P oint the aiming beam at a bar code. The aiming beam must align with bar code f or better results. Holding the ter minal between 4-10 inches (10-25 cm) from a bar code is recommended. 1.
4 - 3 Aiming Options The aiming beam is narrower when y ou hold t he ter minal closer to a bar code and the ai ming beam is wider when you hold it far- ther from a bar code. The aiming beam must be aimed closer to symbologies that ha ve smaller bars or elements (mil siz e).

5 - 1 5 Using the Camera Overview The Dolphin 6000 terminal contains a 3. 0-megapixel color camera, A utomated Camera Control (ACC) and an Application Pro- gramming Interf ace (API). The API provid es easy access to color picture and vide o capture functions.
5 - 2 Options T ap Menu > Options . The Options men u contains f our tabs: Recor ding Video 1. Tap > Pictures & Videos > Camera > Menu > Video . 2. Point the camera lens at an object. 3. Adjust the position of the came ra lens to make sure that t he object is showing on the screen.
6 - 1 6 Using the K e ypad 29-Ke y Numeric Keypad The Dolphin 6000 terminal has a 29-key alpha/numeric k eypad. Using the Function Ke ys Name Ke y Function Backspace Mov es the cursor bac k one s pace each time the ke y is pressed. If typing te xt, it deletes the previo us char acter each time it is pressed.

7 - 1 7 System Settings Overview The terminal settings can be changed in the Settings menu. T ap > Settings and the Settings menu opens. Settings Menu Icon Description Bluetooth Adjust Bluetooth radio settings. This icon sho ws only if the Bluetooth radio and driver are installed.
7 - 2 Cloc k & Alarms T o adjust the time and date: 1. Tap the time on the Command Bar. 2. Scroll horizont ally and tap the Clock icon. 3. Tap the Time or Date sections. OR Ta p > Settings > Clock & Alarms . The Clock & Alarms men u opens.
7 - 3 4. Select the Time tab. This setting sets the system clock. 5. Tap the Time Zone box to open the drop-down menu. 6. Set the correct time zone from the drop-down menu. 7. Set the correct time and da te in the remaining fields. 8. Tap OK to save the settings.
7 - 4 Using File Explorer If a specific program is not f ound, you can either use File Explorer on the terminal to move the prog ram or ActiveSync on a workstation to create a shor tcut of a program and place the shor tcut in the Star t menu folder .
7 - 5 Note: If there is no blank area in the window, tap Menu > Edit > Paste Shortcut . 6. Go to the Start menu to make sure the copied program is in the Start menu folder.
7 - 6 System Menu The system settings can be changed in the System menu. T o access the System menu: 1. Go to > Settings > System . 2. Tap an icon to open a system setting. Icon See Page About See About on page 7-7. Backlight See Backlight on page 7-7.
7 - 7 About The About menu shows inf or mation abou t the ter minal. There are f our tabs: Bac klight The Backlight menu adjusts the bac klight lev el of the screen. T o adjust the backlight le vel settings: Regional Settings See Regional Settings on page 7-14.

7 - 9 Backlight Intensity In the backlight menu , tap the Brightness tab and move the slider to change the screen brightness for battery power and e xternal power settings. The def ault setting is 4. Cer tificates The Cer tificates menu sho ws cer tificates that the operating system recognizes .
7 - 10 Encryption The Encr yption menu can be adjusted to encrypt files on storage cards so that thos e files cannot be read by another terminal. Err or Repor ting The Error Repor ting menu can be adjuste d to enable or disab l e the error repo r ting function of Windows Mobile 6.
7 - 11 External GPS The External GPS menu gives y ou the option to choose a por t for a third-party GPS software application to access the GPS receiver .
7 - 12 Main T ab The Main tab shows usage statistics of on-board RAM (v olatile) memor y . Columns: •S t o r a g e = FLASH memory used to store programs and program data. • Program = RAM memory used to run programs. Rows: • Total = Shows current Megabytes (M B) of memory that can be used.
7 - 13 Select memor y type from the drop-down list. • Total storage card memory = Total Megabytes (MB) of memory capacity of the Storage Card • In use = MB currently being used • Free = MB that can still be used One memor y card can be install ed in the Dolphin 6000 terminal.
7 - 14 Regional Settings Regional Settings enables y ou to customize the appearance and f ormatting to your geo graphic region. Specifically , you can cus- tomize numbers (i.e ., the number of decimal places allowed), cu rrency (i.e., using the $ symbol), time and date .
7 - 15 Screen The Screen menu has three tabs: • General • ClearType •T e x t S i z e General T ab Orientation The General tab is used to set dynamic screen rota tion.
7 - 16 ClearT ype T ab The screen suppor ts ClearT ype font re ndering, which increases the readabi lity of te xt on LCD displa ys. T o turn on ClearT ype f ont rendering, tap Enable ClearT ype and tap OK . Note: For more information about ClearType font rendering, visit: www.
7 - 17 T ask Manager The T ask Manager displa ys inf ormation about applications and processes that are being used on terminal. Use T a sk Manager to view memory and CPU usage of applications and processes. View T ask Manager when memor y errors are received or when the terminal operation is slow .
7 - 18 4. Tap Switch To on the pop-up menu. 5. Tap and hold on an application. 6. Tap End Task or End All Tasks on the pop-up menu. Note: Stopping a program frees up RAM memory. If you stop a program in Task Manager, unsaved data in that program is lost.

8 - 3 My W ork Netw ork Enables y o u to establish the f ollowing connection types: • Modem • Virtual Private Network (VPN) • Proxy server connection Note: If you are connected to your ISP or private network during synchronization, the terminal downloads the proper proxy settings.
8 - 4 Enabling the Radios 1. Tap > Settings > Connections > Dolphin Wireless Manager . 2. Tap anywhere inside t he rectangle or the OFF button inside the rectangle. 3. The radio begins activating. 4. When the radio is activated (i .e., transmitting a signal), the OFF button changes to ON .

9 - 1 9 W orking with GSM/GPRS/EDGE Overview The Dolphin 6000 terminal is designed with an integrated, embedded GSM/GPRS/E DGE radio module f or WW AN communica- tion.
9 - 2 SIM Car d Requirements Bef ore installing the SIM card: • The service provider must activate the SIM card. • The terminal must be turned off. Note: If no SIM card is install ed, emergency phone calls such as 9-1-1 can still be made. Installing a SIM Car d 1.
9 - 3 8. Lock the SIM card latch by sliding the latch toward bottom of terminal. 9. Install the battery. 10. Install and lock the battery door. 11. Power on the terminal. Enabling the GSM Radio By def ault, the GSM radio is not enab led after a hard reset.
9 - 4 Accessing the Dialer Window Ta p > Phone or press the Green Call button. The Phone dialer opens. Dialing Once the dialer window is open, the terminal can dial two wa ys: • Use the touch screen and tap bu ttons on the dialer window. • Use the physical keypad (when keypad is in numeric mode).
9 - 5 Ending Calls While the phone call is active , tap End on the screen or press the re d end call button on k eypad. Accessing V oice Mail Ta p > Phone -> Speed Dial -> V oice Mail -> Call . Note: Update the voice mail retrieval number by turning off the terminal and then turn ing on the terminal via the Dolphin Wirele ss Manager.
9 - 6 Sounds In the Sounds tab , ring tones, ring types, an d ke ypad sounds can be changed. Services The phone reads settings f or each ser vice on the SIM card and shows the a v ailable options from carrier .
9 - 7 Network The Network tab displays options to find and set netw orks. Security Y ou can make or change a PIN on the Security tab . Data Comm unication Y ou set up data communication via the Connections Manager . The carr ier on the SIM card is the ISP .
9 - 8 Inf ormation Requirements The f ollowing is required from SIM card carrier : • APN (access point name). • Username and password of account. Establishing Data Comm unication 1. Tap > Settings -> Connection -> Connections . 2. Under My ISP, tap Add a new modem connection .
9 - 9 5. Enter an Access point name. Tap Next . 6. Enter a username and password from the account. Tap Finish ..
9 - 10 7. In the Connections window, tap Manage existing connections . The new connection should show on the list in the modem tab. 8. Press and hold the conn ection. A pop-up menu appears. 9. Select Connect on the pop-up menu. 10. The network icon in the navigation bar shows GSM radio is attempting to connect.
9 - 11 Ending the Data Connection The def ault setting makes the data connection disconnect after a specific amount of ti me passes without use. This amount of time is determined by the ISP . T o end data connection manually , tap the network icon in navigation bar and tap Disconnect on the pop-up men u.

10 - 1 10 W orking with Bluetooth Radio Enabling the Bluetooth Radio Y ou enable the Bluetooth radio in the Dolphin Wireless Manager on page 8-3. 1. T ap > Settings > Connections > on the Home screen to access the Dolphin Wireless Manager . 2.
10 - 2 P airing and T rusted Devices The terminal does suppor t pairing. Pairing happens during general c onnection setup. P aired device s are "trusted" de vices. This means that there is unrestricted access to all ser vices (including ser vices th at require author ization and authentication).
10 - 3 5. You are prompted to enter a passcode. If the de vice has a specific passcode, enter it in the P asscode field and tap Next . When attempting to connect to a printer or headset with Bluetooth capabilities, the passcode ma y def ault to either 1111 or 0000.
10 - 4 If you are connecting to a printer or headset, complete any additional steps required b y de vice. 11. After the passcodes have been ac cepted on both sides, you hav e a trusted (paired) connection. T ransferring Files 1. Tap > File Explorer .

11 - 1 11 W orking with GPS Overview The Dolphin 6000 terminal contains an in tegrated GPS module that allo ws location tracking of w orkers and v ehicles, providing better utilization of field assets. Optional mapping and na vigation software provides turn-by-turn driving directions and locat ion inf orm ation.

12 - 1 12 Dolphin 6000 HomeBase Overview The Dolphin 6000 HomeBase suppor ts both RS232 and USB communications, which mak es it able to connect with majority of PC-based enter prise systems. Capacity The HomeBase holds one Dolphin 6000 termin al and has an auxiliar y batter y well beh ind the ter minal well.
12 - 2 P ar ts and Functions Front P anel T erminal W ell Place the Dolphin 6000 in the term inal well to use the ter minal and to charge a batter y pack in the terminal. The HomeBase charges the batter y in 4 hours. If the host terminal is a workstation that us es ActiveSync, synchronization begins immedi- ately .
12 - 3 Back P a nel A uxiliar y Battery We ll The HomeBase can charge an additional Li-ion batter y pack in 4 hours in the well behind t he terminal. This feature ensures that you can alw a ys hav e an additional fully-c harged batter y for Dol phin 6000 terminal.
12 - 4 Note: Signals referenced are for a DTE device. The HomeBase is at a right-angle to the printed circuit board (PCB). Charging the Battery The HomeBase powers the terminal and charges its batter y pack in 4 hours .
12 - 5 Ensure all components are dr y prior to mating ter minals/batte ries with per ipheral de vices. Mating wet components ma y cause damage not cov e red by the w arranty .
12 - 6 Connecting the Comm unication Cables 1. Plug in the power suppl y and connect it to the back of the HomeBase. 2. Plug the USB or RS232 communication cable into back of the HomeBase. 3. Connect the communication cable in to the back of the workstation.
