2 Hooking Up the VCR Choosing a Hookup The hookups on pages 3 through 5 are divided into two hookup types: Basic (A) and Advanced (B). The basic hookup shows the backs of TVs that have only an antenna/cable connection. It is the easier of the two and additional accessories may not be needed.
A. Basic hookup. Use this hookup for a basic connection which requires fewer accessories. 1 . Set the 3CH.4 switch on back of VCR to either channel 3 or 4. Tune the TV to this channel and use the TV•VCR button to watch the VCR. 2 . Connect as shown.

7 1. Check accessories with VCR. Contact your dealer if any items are missing. 2. Insert batteries in remote. 3. T ur n on the TV . A. Turn on the TV. B . If you used one of the basic hookups, tune the TV to the channel selected with the 3CH.4 switch on back of VCR.
8 Setting Up the VCR Star tup 5. Place channels in the VCR’ s memory . The first time you turn on the VCR or after a power interruption, the VCR displays a message on the TV screen prompting you to perform the AUTO CHANNEL SEARCH. If the message does not appear, go to Step A below.
9 Setting Up the VCR Star tup 7. Select the language. The VCR displays the on-screen menus in the English, Spanish, or French language. The word ÒLanguageÓ cycles through the different languages when the VCR MAIN MENU is displayed on the TV screen. A .
Setting Up the VCR 10. Use TV•VCR button. Skip this step if you used one of the advanced hookups. When using one of the basic hookups, the TV•VCR button lets you switch between the picture coming from the VCR or television channels. This button lets you record a program on the VCR while watching another channel on the TV.
11 Using the Remote Contr ol Contr olling a TV The VCRÔs remote is preprogrammed to control the basic functions of a compatible GE, RCA, or ProScan TV. Also, you can set up the remote to control other manufacturerÔs brands. To program the remote, enter the remote code numbers that correspond to your brand.
12 Using the Remote Control CABLE Used with POWER button to turn on a compatible cable box or satellite receiver as described on page 14 . TV Turns on a compatible GE, RCA, or ProScan TV and sets the remote to control the TV. Used with POWER button to turn on another brand of TV as described on page 11 .
13 Using the Remote Contr ol VCR Function Buttons (continued) REC (Record) Starts the VCR recording. Used for one touch recording. REW (Rewind) Rewinds the tape when the VCR is stopped. Quickly searches a tape in reverse motion during playback. SEARCH Displays the INDEX, ZERO and BLANK search menus on the TV screen.
14 Using the Remote Contr ol Contr olling a Cable Box or a Satellite Receiver The CABLE button on the VCRÕs remote is preprogrammed to control a compatible RCA cable box or GE, RCA, or ProScan satellite receiver.
15 Playback T o play a tape 1 . Turn on the TV and tune it to channel 3, 4, or the TVÕs video input to see the picture from the VCR. 2 . Insert a tape in the VCR. The VCR automatically turns on and the VCR indicator lights. The VCR automatically begins playback if the safety tab on the tape has been removed and the AUTO PLAY feature is turned on.
16 Using the Playback Featur es Picture Sear ch You can search for a specific tape location during playback by fast forwarding or rewinding the tape. Sound is turned off during picture search. Picture search works best for tapes recorded in the SP or SLP speed.
17 Using the Playback Featur es DISP (DISPLA Y) Button The DISP button shows the status of the VCR channel number, time counter, date, time and tape speed on the TV screen. The time and date must be set before they can be displayed. 1. Press DISP . If you do not press DISP again, this display times out.
18 Using the Playback Featur es Index Search The VCR has a ÒVHS Index Search SystemÓ that automatically records an index mark on the tape every time you begin recording a program. Your VCR has two index playback features. To locate the program you want to play, select a specific index number or search by scanning.
19 Playing a T ape Using the Playback Featur es Blank Search The VCR searches for blank portions of the tape that are more than six seconds long. 1. Insert the prerecorded tape and press STOP . 2. Press SEARCH three times to display the BLANK SEARCH menu.

The Hi-Fi sound is recorded on separate left and right stereo channels.
21 Recording and Playback Feature COMMERCIAL ADV ANCE™ COMMERCIAL ADVANCEª is a patented technology that detects and marks most commercials on your tape for any recording that is more than 15 minutes long. During playback, the VCR automatically skips the detected commercial segments or you can choose to manually skip them.
22 T o Select a Background for Playback 1. Press MENU to display the VCR MAIN MENU . 2. Press 5 to display the PREFERENCES menu. 3. Press 7 to select CA DISPLAY: BLUE or VIDEO. ¥ Select BLUE to have the VCR display a blue screen while it advances through the block of marked commercials.
23 Recording a Program Recor dings Your VCR provides different recording options. These options are explained in this section of the manual. Recording Speeds Press SPEED on the remote to select a recording speed (SP or SLP). The speed you select appears on the TV screen.
24 Recording a Program One T ouch Recor ding One Touch recording lets you record up to four hours without using the timer program feature. The VCR turns off automatically at the end of the recording. 1. Turn on the VCR. 2. Insert a tape with its safety tab in place.
