Software Guide 1–1 1 CD and D VD Software Using CDs and D VDs Most of this section provides instructions for using optical dri ve software. Before using any optical dri ve software, Compaq recommends that you read the follo wing general information about using CDs and D VDs.
1–2 Software Guide CD and D VD Software A dri ve medium is any storage de vice that can be inserted into a dri ve; for example, a disk ette, disk, CD, or D VD. Autorun is enabled at the factory , but can be disabled. Setting A utorun Preferences Autorun is enabled or disabled through the operating system: ■ In Windo ws 2000 Professional, 1.
CD and D VD Software Software Guide 1–3 Displaying the Contents of a Medium If autorun is disabled and the contents of a medium are not displayed when you insert it, you can display the contents manually: 1. Select Start > Run, then type: e xplorer x: (where X = the dri ve designation of the dri ve containing the medium).

CD and D VD Software Software Guide 1–7 Accessing Windows Media Pla yer Help The W indows Media Player application is a program within the operating system. Instructions for using W indows Media Player are included in the W indows Media Player Help f ile.
1–8 Software Guide CD and D VD Software Pla ying D V Ds with WinD VD InterV ideo W inD VD is an application that enables you to play D VD movies. W inD VD is preloaded on the notebook, but not preinstalled.

1–12 Software Guide CD and D VD Software Creating and Cop ying CDs and D VDs This section provides procedures for creating or cop ying CDs or D VDs, depending on the optical dri ves on your PC, using Easy CD Creator (provided on selected models).
CD and D VD Software Software Guide 1–13 Installing Easy CD Creator If Easy CD Creator software is included with the notebook, it is provided on a CD and is not preloaded or preinstalled. The Easy CD Creator installation procedure begins with inserting a CD into the dri ve.
1–14 Software Guide CD and D VD Software 5. On the installation menu, Compaq recommends that you select the Complete installation. T o do so, select the Complete button, then follo w the instructions on the screen. 6. When installation is complete and you are prompted to restart the notebook, select Y es.

1–16 Software Guide CD and D VD Software Selecting and Preparing Easy CD Creator Media Choosing Recor ding Media Compaq recommends using high-quality media that correspond to the maximum speed of the optical dri ve.
CD and D VD Software Software Guide 1–17 T o erase DirectCD formatting from a rewritable medium so the medium can be used with Easy CD Creator or CD Copier: 1. Insert the medium into an optical dri ve. (If you are prompted to install UDF Reader , refer to the “Responding to the UDF Prompt” section.

2–2 Software Guide Po w e r Understanding Standb y and Hibernation Standby and Hibernation are ener gy-saving features that conserv e po wer and reduce startup time. They can be initiated by you or b y the system. Standb y Standby reduces po wer to system components that are not being used.
Po w e r Software Guide 2–3 Choosing Standb y , Hibernation or Shutdown When Y ou Lea ve Y our W ork If you plan to resume shortly: Initiate Standby . Standby clears the screen, uses less po wer than leaving the notebook on, and your work returns instantly to the screen when you e xit Standby .

Po w e r Software Guide 2–13 Using SpeedStep (Windows 2000 Pr ofessional Only) In W indow s 2000 Professional, the Intel Pentium 4 Processor with SpeedStep technology enables you to set the processor speed for optimal performance or optimal po wer conservation.
2–14 Software Guide Po w e r Setting SpeedStep Preferences SpeedStep settings can be accessed from either the SpeedStep windo w or the SpeedStep icon. In addition, SpeedStep can be enabled or disabled in Computer Setup. ✎ If the SpeedStep windo w and icon are not accessible, they may be disabled in Computer Setup.

Software Guide 3–1 3 Security Security Features Quic k Reference The notebook provides the follo wing security features that are not av ailable in the operating system. For information about operating system security features, select Start > Help > Contents tab, then select Security .
3–2 Software Guide Security Setting Preferences in Computer Setup Most security preferences are set in Computer Setup. Because Computer Setup is a non-W indo ws utility , keystrokes (not notebook pointing de vices) are used to navigate or select within the utility .
Security Software Guide 3–3 Combining Compaq and Windows P assw ords Compaq security features and operating system security features work independently from each other . For e xample, a device disabled in Computer Setup cannot be enabled in W indows.
3–4 Software Guide Security Using a P ower -On P ass wor d A po wer-on password pre vents unauthorized use of the notebook. Once set, it must be entered each time the notebook is turned on, restarted, or exits Hibernation. A po wer-on passw ord: ■ Does not display as it is set, entered, changed, or deleted.
Security Software Guide 3–5 ❏ T o change a power -on password, type the current password in the Old P assword field, type the ne w password in the Ne w Password and V erify Ne w Password fields, then press F10. ❏ T o delete a power -on password, type the current password in the Old P assword field, then press F10.
3–6 Software Guide Security Entering Compaq Administrator P assw or d Settings A Compaq Administrator password is set, changed, or deleted in Computer Setup. 1. T o open Computer Setup, turn on or restart the notebook. Press F10 while the F10 = R OM Based Setup message is displayed in the lo wer left of the screen.
Security Software Guide 3–7 Entering a Compaq Administrator P assw or d At the Computer Setup prompt, type your password using the same ke ys you used to set the password, then press enter . After 3 unsuccessful attempts to enter the Compaq administrator password, you must restart the notebook and try again.
3–8 Software Guide Security ■ A user password and a master password: ❏ Can be the same as any other passw ord. If you use the same password for both a po wer-on password and a Dri veLock passw ord, you are prompted for the Dri veLock password, b ut not the power -on password, when the notebook starts up from the protected hard dri ve.

3–12 Software Guide Security Disabling a De vice From the Computer Setup De vice Security menu, you can disable or partially disable most ports and dri ves. For more information about the option to disable the MultiPort Fn+F2 hotkeys, see the H a rd w a re G u i d e , “Pointing De vices and Ke yboard” chapter , on this CD.
Security Software Guide 3–13 Pr otecting System Information Selecting an Inf ormation Management Procedure Follo w the procedure in “Entering and Displaying System Information, ” which is the next section, to perform the follo wing tasks: ■ Display or enter the notebook serial number , asset tag, and o wnership tag.
3–14 Software Guide Security Entering and Displa ying System Information 1. T o open Computer Setup, turn on or restart the notebook. Press F10 while the F10 = R OM Based Setup message is displayed in the lo wer left of the screen. ❏ T o change the language, press F2.
Security Software Guide 3–15 Connecting an Optional Cable Loc k If you hav e purchased a cable lock, loop the cable around a secure object, then insert the cable lock 1 into the security cable slot 2 and lock it with the cable lock ke y 3 .
Software Guide 4–1 4 Intelligent Manageability The Intelligent Manageability application is included only with notebooks that ship with the W indows 2000 Professional or W indo ws XP Professional operating system. The application is provided on the Compaq application reco very CD that ships with those operating systems.
4–2 Software Guide Intelligent Manageability Installing Intelligent Manageability The Intelligent Manageability application is on the Compaq application recov ery CD. This CD is included with notebooks that ship with the W indo ws 2000 Professional or W indows XP Professional operating systems.
Intelligent Manageability Software Guide 4–3 ■ The system temperature alert pre vents critical ov erheating. As the system temperature rises, this feature first adjusts f an and CPU (central processing unit) speed, then displays an alert, then shuts do wn the system if necessary .

6–10 Software Guide Software Updates and Restorations Restoring Software The Restore CDs included with the notebook contain all the software that shipped preinstalled or preloaded on the notebook and instructions for restoring it.
Software Updates and Restorations Software Guide 6–11 Installing a Retail V e r sion of an Operating System A W indows operating system pro vided on the notebook or on a Restore CD is enhanced by Compaq. The Compaq enhancements add po wer and security features and provide supplementary support for external de vices such as dri ves and PC Cards.
Software Guide 7–1 7 Setup and Diagnostic Utilities Selecting Computer Setup or Compaq Diagnostics The notebook features two Compaq system management utilities: ■ Computer Setup is a system information and customization utility that can be used e ven when the operating system is not working or will not load.

If the operating system is working, the notebook will restart the operating system after you exit Computer Setup.
