17 Preparations This chapter de scribes basic operatio ns, such as navigating the menus, and first time settings to help you learn more about your camcor der . Getting Started Charging the Battery Pack The camcorder can be power ed with a battery pack or directly using the compact power adapter .
Preparations 18 • When the compact power adapter is connected, even if a battery is attached its power will not be consumed. 1 Disconnect the co mpact power adapter from the ca mcorder. 2 Unplug the compac t power adapter from the power ou tlet. Press to release the battery pack.
19 Installing the Backup Battery The backup battery (lithium button battery CR1616) allows the camcorder to r etain the date, time ( 25 ) and other camcorder setti ngs while the power source is disconnected. Connect a power source to the camcor der when replacing the backup battery to retain the settings.
Preparations 20 Point the controller at the camcor der’ s remote sensor when you press the buttons. Y ou can rotate the LCD panel 180 degrees to use the wireless controller from the fr ont of the camcor der .
21 Basic Operation of the Camcorder Operating Modes The camcorder’ s operating mode is determined by the position of the switch. In the manual, indicates that a function is av ailable in the operating mode shown and indicates that the function is not available.

29 IMPORT ANT When recording movies, try to get a calm, stable picture. Excessive camcorder movement while shooting and extensive use of fast zooms and panning can result in jittery scenes. In extreme cases, the playback of such scenes may result in visually induced motion sickness.
Video 30 Zooming: Optical, Advanced and Digital Zoom The camcor der of fers three types of zoom: optical, advanced and digital zoom. Y ou can also change the zoom speed. 37 Advanced Function : Special Scene Recording Programs Recording in a very brig ht ski resort or capturing the full colo rs of a sunset or a fireworks di splay becomes as easy as selecting a Special Scene r ecording program. For details about the available options, refer to the sidebar on page 38.
Video 38 [ PROGRAM AE] The camcor der sets the aperture and shutter speed. [ BEACH] Use this mode to recor d on a sunny beach. It prev ents the subject from being underexposed. [ PORTRAIT] The camcor der uses a large aperture, achi eving a focus on the subject while blurring other distracting details.
39 Flexible Recording: Changing the Shutter Speed Use the automatic exposure (AE) program to use functions like the white balance or imag e effects, or to select the shutter speed. Use faster shutter speeds to record subjects moving quickly . Use slower shutter speeds to add motion blur , emphasizing the f eel of movement.
Video 40 - Recording movies under fluorescent lights: If the screen starts to flicker , select [ PROGRAM AE] and se t the shutter speed to 1/100. - The shutter speed resets to [ AUTO] when you set the mode switch to or change the recor ding program.
