22 Attaching and Detachin g the Eye Cup Y ou can change the position of the eye cup for use with either th e left or right eye. Detach the eye cup and reattach it when changing the position of the eye cup for right or left eye use.
23 Prepara tions Adjusting the Pos ition of the Viewfinder The viewfinder position can be changed (right/left, fo rward/bac kwar d). When storing the camcor der in the optiona l HC-3200 System Case, adjust the viewfinder to the right and lock it. 28 Proper operatio n cannot be guaranteed when recor din g in HDV standard with the optio nal Extender XL 1.6x. The mes sage “HD INCOMP A TIBLE LENS ” will app ear when using the extender , even with an HD-compatible lens. Attaching the Lens H ood Attach the lens hood to pr otect the lens and shade it fr om stray light.

30 Using the W ire less Contr oller When you pr ess t he buttons on the wi r eless contr oller , point it at one of the camcor der’ s remote sens ors. The camcorder has 3 rem ote sensors: 2 at the front and 1 at the back. Inserting the Batteries The wir eless contr oller operates with two AA (R6) batteries.
31 Prepara tions Loading/Removing a Cassette Use only videocassettes marked with the logo. For rec ordin g in HDV we re commend you use videocassettes designed for HDV recor ding. 1. Sl ide the EJECT switc h to op en t he cassett e compartmen t cover .
32 Inserting/Removing a Memor y Card Y ou can use SDHC (SD High Capacity) memory cards, SD memo ry car ds or MultiMedia Car ds (MMC) with this camcor der . Inserting the Card 1. Set th e dial to OFF . 2. Push the switch in the dir ection of the arrow to open the memory car d slot cover .
33 Prepara tions Changing Settings with the MENU Button Many of the camco rder’ s functions can be changed fr om the on-screen menu. Selecting Menus and Settings 1. Press t he MENU butto n to ope n the menu. 2. T urn the SE LECT d ial to selec t a submenu and pr ess the SET bu tton.
34 Date/T ime and Language Settings Set the time zone, date and time when you firs t start using your camcor der , or if the built-in rechar geable battery has discharg ed completely . Setting the Time Zone/Daylight Saving Time 1. Pr ess the MEN U button.

36 Recording Recording The default re cordin g standar d is HDV . About the audio r ecordin g, refe r to the relevant ch apter ( 57). Recording 1. Remove the lens cap. 2. Pr ess the loc k button and set t he dial to a r ecor ding pr ogram. 3. Press the Start/Stop butt on to begin r ecordi ng.
37 Recor ding Low- an gle R eco r di ng The carrying handle is equipped with a duplicate set of recor ding an d zoom contr ols, ideal for low-a ngle reco rding. Slide the LOCK switch in the directio n of the arr ow to prevent the accidental operation of these contr ols.
38 Screen Displays while Recording Tim e co d e Y ou can se lect between drop frame or non-dr op frame time code ( 52). Re maini ng ta pe Indicates the remaining time on the tape in minutes. “ END” will ap pear when the ta pe reaches the en d. • When the time left is less than 15 seconds, th e remaining tape time may not appear .
39 Recor ding Selecting the On-Scr een Displays Y ou can select the amount of information shown on the screen from full, partial or no display . Repeatedly pressing the EVF DI SPLA Y button will cycl e through the options in the following seque nce. 1 This level cann ot be selected if [SYSTEM SETUP/ ] [ ALL DISPL A Y] i s set to [DISABLE ].
40 Selecting the Signal Standard and Aspect Ratio Y ou can select the signal standard of your r ecording (high definition or stan dard definition ) and, for standard def inition r ecor dings, also the aspect r atio of the r ecording.
41 Recor ding Locating the End of the La st Scene Y ou can use this function to locate the end of the last re corded scene. Pr ess the END SEARCH bu tton. • appears. • The camcor d er rewinds/fast forwards the tape , plays back the last few seconds of the r ecording and stops the tape.
42 Zooming Y ou can operate the zo om using the zoom lever o n the side grip or the one on the carr ying handle. Y ou can also use the zoom ring on th e lens or the zoom buttons on the wir eless contr oller .
43 Recor ding Zoom bu ttons on the car rying han dle: The zoom speed is constant and can be set to one of 16 zoom speed levels. Set the ZOOM SPE ED switch to CONST ANT and change the zoom speed level as described previously . Zoom buttons on the suppli ed wir eless con trolle r: The zoom speed is constant and cannot be adjusted.
44 Adjusting the Focus Functions in this chapter ar e explained using the HD 20x L IS III lens. If you are using a dif fer ent lens, refer also to the instruction manual of the lens .
45 Recor ding Autofocus may n ot work well on the following subjects. In that case, focus manually . - R eflective surfaces - Subjects with low contrast or without vertical lines - F ast moving subjects - Through d irty or wet windows - Night s cenes Manual focus 1.
46 Using the Focus A ssist Functions (Peakin g and Magnifying) In or der to make manual focusing easier , you can u se two assist functions: Peak ing emphasizes the outlines of the subject cr eating a clear er contrast, and Magnifying enlar ges the image on the screen.
47 Recor ding Focus Preset (lenses with focus preset function) This function enables a focus positio n to be memorized. Later , you can r eturn to the preset focus position instantly . Y ou can also select the speed at which the camcor der r eturns to the preset focus position.
48 Macro Shooting (Focus Limit) Usually the camcor der’ s focus range allows macro sho oting. Y ou can activate the focus limit to restrict the focus ran ge. Using the HD 20x L IS I II lens, the focus rang e 10 cm - (at full wi de-angle) is limited to 1 m - (throughout the entire zoom ra nge).
49 Recor ding Using the ND Filter (lenses with built-in ND filter) When recor din g in bright surr oundings, the camcor der will set a small apertur e value and the picture ma y appear blurr ed. When using a lens with a built-in ND filte r , tur n the ND filter on/of f accor ding to the screen display .
50 Selecting the Frame Rate Y ou can select from the foll owing frame rates depending on the reco rd ing mode: 60i, 30 F , 24F (2:3 pulldown-co nverted) 60i, 30 F , 24F (2:3 pulldown-co nverted or 2:3:3:2 pulldo wn-conver ted) 60i Mode Records 60 interlaced fields per second, th e same as standard-definition TV signals.
51 Recor ding Selecting the Fr ame Rate Set the FRAM E RA T E switch to the desired position . • i: 60i Mode, F1: 30F Mode, F2 : 24F Mode. • The selected frame rate appears on-screen. If the position of the FRAME RA TE switch is changed while r ecor din g, the f rame rate will not change immediately; it will change once you pause the recording.
52 Setting the T ime Code Selecting the Fr ame Setting When reco rding in a mode o ther than SD at a frame rate of 24F , you can select between drop fr ame or non-drop fram e time code. Open the menu and sel ect [SIGNAL SETU P]. Select th e [TIME CODE] submen u and then [FRAME SET TNG].
53 Recor ding In SD mode with the frame rate set to 24F , the frames value of the time code can be set only in multiples of 5. When you change the frame rate fr om 60i/30F to 24F , the frames value of the time code will automatically become a multiple of 5 .
54 Synchronizing the Camcorder ’ s T ime Code Y ou can synchronize this camcor der’ s time code to an extern al time code gener ator . Y ou can also include in the r ecor ding the user bit signal rec eived from th e TC-IN terminal ( 56). The camcor der off ers the following synchr onization option s.
55 Recor ding When an exter nal time code signal is received, the camcorder's own time code will be synchronized to it and the synchronization will be maintain ed even if you disconnect the cable from the TC-IN terminal.
56 Setting the User Bit The user bit display can be selected fro m the date or the time of r ecordin g, or an identification code consisting of 8 characters in the hexadecimal system that is useful for labeling tapes. There ar e sixteen possible characters: the numbers 0 to 9 and the letters A to F .
57 Recor ding Audio Recording When reco rding on the tape in either HDV or DV standar d, audio is r ecord ed on two channels. The audio transfer rate is 384 kbps and the sampling fr equency is 48 kHz. Y o u can record audio in 16-bit mo de (samplin g frequency 48 k Hz), or 12-bit mode (sampling frequency 32 kHz).
58 Recording Audio Select the audio input fr om FRONT (supplied micr ophone), XLR MIC (XLR terminals) or XLR LINE (XLR terminals). Y ou can select the audio input independently for channel 1 and channel 2 . Using the Front Microphone Set the IN PUT SELE CT swi tch to FRON T MIC.
59 Recor ding Adjusting the Audio Recording Level If the audio level is too high and the sound sound s distorted, activate the microphone atte nuator (20 dB), by setting the FRONT MIC A T T . switch or the correspond ing switch to A TT . Hiding/D isplaying the Audi o Level Indicator Open the menu and select [DISPL A Y SETUP/ ].
60 Y ou can select to synchron ize the audio signal with the video signal by adding an equal amount of delay to the audio. Open the menu and select [A UDIO SETUP]. Select [MONITOR SEL.], set it to [LINE OUT] and close the menu. If you wish to monitor audio in real time, select [NORMAL] instead.
61 Recor ding Image Stabilizer (lenses with image st abilization functi on) Y ou can select to activate the image stabilizer or turn it off depending on the recor ding cond itions. T o turn off the image sta biliz er using the HD 2 0x L IS III l ens: Set the ST ABI LIZER ON /OFF swit ch to OF F .
62 Using the Programmed AE Modes Prog rammed auto exposur e modes provide advan ced automated recor ding tec hniques ensuring professional r esults in va rious shooting co nditions. Manual ( 65) This mode of fers the creative fr eedom of a complete range of manual controls.
63 Recor ding Easy Recording The camcorder auto matically controls the focus, shutter speed, apertur e, gain, white balance, and AE Shift allowing you to s imply point and film . This mode locks all of these features an d options, making them fixed and unadjustable.

65 Recor ding Recording in Manual Mode Y ou can set the exposure at any combination of shutter speed and apertur e. The aperture value can be adjusted in 1/16 EV stops; however , the apertur e value displayed on the scr een will change only in 1/4 EV stops.
66 With the custom function [LANC AE SHIF T] ( 104), you can change the function of the AE SHIF T dial on the optio nal ZR-2 000 Zoom Remote Cont r o ller and use it to change the apertur e value.
67 Recor ding Recording in Shutter -Priority (Tv) Mode Available shut ter spee ds when reco rding m ovies depend on the s elected f rame rate : Available shutter sp eeds when record ing still image s: 1/4*, 1/8, 1 /15, 1/30, 1/6 0, 1/100, 1/25 0, 1/500 * Only with the HD 20x L IS II or HD 20x L IS III Lens.
68 Recording in Aperture-Priority (Av) Mode The apertur e value can be adjusted in 1/16 EV stops; however , the aperture value displayed on the screen will change only in 1/4 EV stops. Available aperture values (w ith th e HD 20x L I S II or HD 20 x L IS III le ns) F1.
69 Recor ding Adjusting the Exposure Exposure Lock 1. Set th e dial to , Tv or Av . 2. Pr ess the EXP . LOCK button. • The exposure indicator appears. Use the exposure indicator as an estimate. • The mark abov e the indicator indicates the standard exposur e (calculated by the camcor der).
70 Gain The gain contr ol adjusts the level o f the video signal generated depen ding on the lightin g and shooting conditions. Select automati c gain contr ol, one of the preset gai n level ranging fr om -3 dB to +18 dB or fine-tune the gain level in 0 .
71 Recor ding White Balance The camcor der uses an electr onic white balance pr ocess to calibrate the pictur e for accurate color display under differ ent lighting co nditions.
72 Setting a Cu stom White Balance 1. Set the POWER dial to a r ecording pr ogram other than . 2. Press t he WHIT E BALANC E dial so that it pops out . 3. Set the WHITE BALANCE dial to one of the custom pr eset pos itions, A or B. 4. Point th e camcor der at a whit e object and zoom in until it f ills the whol e scre en.
73 Recor ding Zebra Pattern This camcor der has a zebra pattern featur e that shows bla ck and white diagon al stripes over the areas that are over exposed. The zebra pattern is only displayed on the scr een and will not af fect your reco rdings. The zebra pattern will not be displayed while the Peaking function is activated ( 46).
74 Color Correction With the color corr ection fun ction you can set the camcor der to detect the character istics of a certain color or pattern (color phase, ch ro ma, area and Y level) and correct them automatically when recor ding. Y ou can set the color correctio n for up to two differ ent colors (A and B).
75 Recor ding Activ ating the Co lor Co rrectio n 1. Open the menu and select [CAMERA SET UP] and select the [COLOR CORR.] sub menu . 2. Select [CO RRECT], sel ect a corr ection mode and close the menu. • Y ou can correct only the pr edefined A ar ea, only the predefined B ar ea or both.
76 Skin Detail Function With the skin detail function you can set the camcor der to detect the characteristics of a certain color or tone. Detail in the tar geted areas will be softened in order to conceal sk in imperfection s. T argeted areas will be identified on the scre en by a zebra pattern alter nating with the normal pictur e.
77 Recor ding Selective Noise Reduction With the selective noise r eduction fun ction you can set the camco rder to detect the characteristics of a certain color or tone and automatic ally reduc e noise in the tar geted ar eas.
78 Clear Sc an This fe ature allo ws you to rec ord a computer’ s CRT scr een or other equipment w ithout displaying black band or flicker on the scr een. Y ou can adjust the fr equency from 6 0.1 Hz to 203.9 Hz. 1. Set the dial to Tv or M. 2. Repeatedly pr ess the SHUTTER button to set th e shut ter spee d to “CS”.
79 Recor ding Custom Keys Y ou can assign frequently used functio ns to the custom keys. The custom keys can have dif feren t functions assigned to them in each of the oper ating modes. 80 Changing the Custom Key s Setting * Defaul t valu e in mode. Open the menu and select [SYSTEM SETUP/ ]. Select [CUSTOM KEY 1] or [CUSTOM KEY 2], s elect t he funct ion you wi sh to as sign to the cust om key a nd clos e the me nu. When you do not wish to use the custom keys, select [(NONE)].
81 Recor ding [TC HOLD] Time C ode Hold Y ou can press the custom ke y button to fr eeze the display of the ti me code. The time co de will continue running normally even while the time code display is on hold. Time code hold can only be operated with the custom keys.
82 [CP BKWD KEY] Custom Prese t Backwar d Key Press the C USTOM K EY 2 butt on. Usually , pressing the CUST OM PRESET SELE CT button will cycle forwards to the following custom pr eset file. Pressing the custom key butto n instead w ill cycle backwards to the preceding custom preset file.

TV sets w ith S1-Video te rminals : Recor dings m ade with a 16:9 aspect ratio ( 40) will be played automatically in widescreen mode if you con nect the camcor der to the TV using the S-VIDEO terminal.

92 Digital V ideo Control This feature enables the camcor der to contro l the rec ord and stop functions of an external digital device connected to the camcor der thr ough the HDV/DV terminal.
