20 Attaching and Detachin g the Eye Cup Y ou can change the position of the eye cup for use with either the left or righ t eye. Detach the eye cup and reattach it when changing the position of the eye cup for right or left eye use.

When storing the camcor der in the optional HC-3200 System Case, adjust the viewfinder to the right and lock it. 26 Proper operatio n cannot be guaranteed when recor ding in HDV standard with th e optional Extender XL 1.6x. The mes sage “HD INCOMP A TIBLE LEN S” will app ear when using the extender , even with an HD-compatible lens. The camcorder has 3 rem ote sensors: 2 at the front and 1 at the back. Inserting the Batteries The wir e less contr o ller operates with two AA (R6) batteries.

32 Date/T ime and Language Settings Set the time zone, date and time when you firs t start using your camcor der , or if the built-in rechar geable battery has dischar ged completely . Setting the Time Zone/Daylight Saving Time 1. Pr ess the MEN U button.
33 Prepara tions Changing the Date Format Y ou can select between three date formats: [JAN. 1, 2008], [1. JAN. 2008] and [2008. 1. 1]. Open the menu and sel ect [SYSTEM SETUP/ ]. Select the [D/TIME SET ] submenu and then select [DA TE FORMA T]. Select a dat e format and close t h e menu.

35 Recor ding Low- an gle R ecor ding The carrying handle is equipped with a duplicate set of recor ding and zoom contr ols, ideal for low-angl e reco rding. Slide the L OCK switch in the directio n of the arr ow to prevent the accidental operation of these contr ols.
36 Screen Displays while Recording Tim e co d e Indicates the rec ording time in ho urs, m inutes, seconds and frames. Rem aini ng tape Indicates the remaining time on the tape in minutes. “ END” will ap pear when the ta pe reaches th e end. • When the time left is less than 15 seconds, th e remaining tape time may not appear .
37 Recor ding Selecting the On-Scr een Displays Y ou can select the amount of inform ation shown on the screen fro m full, partial or no display . Repeatedly pressing the EVF DI S PLA Y button will cycle throug h the options in the following sequence.
38 Selecting the Signal Standard and Aspect Ratio Y ou can select the signal standar d of your r ecordin g (high definitio n or standard definition ) and, for standard def inition recor dings, also the aspect ratio of the recor ding.
39 Recor ding Locating the End of the La st Scene Y ou can use this function to locate the end of the last re corded scene. Pr ess the END SEARCH bu tton. • appears. • The camcor der r ewinds/fast forwards the tape, plays back the last few seconds of the r ecording and stops the tape.
40 Zooming Y ou can operate the zoom usin g the zoo m lever on the side grip or th e one on th e carrying han dle. Y ou can also use the zoom ring on th e lens or the zoom buttons on the wir eless controller .
41 Recor ding Zoom bu ttons on the carryi ng hand le: The zoom speed is constant and can be set to one of 16 zoom speed levels. Set the ZOOM SPE ED switch to CONST ANT and change the zo om speed level as described previously . Zoom buttons on the suppli ed wireless contr oller: The zoom speed is constant and cannot be adjusted.
42 Adjusting the Focus Functions in this chapter ar e ex plained using the HD 20x L IS III lens. If you are using a dif ferent lens, refer also to the instruction manual of the lens .

44 Using the Focus A ssist Functions (Peakin g and Magnifying) In or der to make manual fo cu sing easier , you can use two assist functions: Peak ing emphasizes the outlines of the subject cr eating a clearer contrast, and Magnifying enlar ges the image on the screen.
45 Recor ding Focus Preset (lenses with focus preset function) This function enables a focus position to be memorized. Later , you can return to the preset focus position instantly . Y ou can also select the speed at which the camcor der retu rns to the preset focus position.
46 Macro Shooting (Focus Limit) Usually the camcor der’ s focus range allows macr o sh ooting. Y ou can activate the focus limit to r estrict the focus ran ge. Using the HD 2 0x L IS I II lens, the focus rang e 10 cm - (at fu ll wide-angle ) is limited to 1 m - (throughout the entire zoom range).
47 Recor ding Using the ND Filter (lenses with built-in ND filter) When reco rding in bright surr oundings, the camcor der will set a small apertur e value and the picture ma y appear blu rr e d. When using a lens with a built-in ND filte r , turn the ND filter on/of f accor ding to the screen display .
48 Selecting the Frame Rate Y ou can set the frame rate to 50i or 25F , regar dless of the recor d ing mode. 50i Mode Records 50 interlaced fields per second, th e same as standard-definition TV signals. 25F Mode Records 25 frames per second accor ding to HDV native 1080/2 5p specifications.
49 Recor ding Setting the T ime Code Y ou can select the running mode of the camcor der’ s time code. Y ou can enter the initial value for the [FREE-RUN] and the [REC-RUN PS.] settings. [REC-RUN]: The time code runs only when recor ding. [REC-RUN PS.
50 Synchronizing the Camcorder ’ s T ime Code Y ou can synchronize this camcor der’ s time code to an external time code generator . Y o u can also include in the r ecor ding the user bit signal rec eived from th e TC-IN terminal ( 52). The camcor d er offer s the following synchr onization options.
51 Recor ding When an exter nal time code signal is received, the camcorder's own time code will be synchronized to it and the synchronization will be maintain ed even if you disconnect the cable from the TC-IN terminal.
52 Setting the User Bit The user bit display can be selected fro m the date or the time of r ecordin g, or an identification code consisting of 8 characters in the hexadecimal system that is useful for labeling tapes. There ar e sixteen possible characters: the numbers 0 to 9 and the letters A to F .
53 Recor ding Audio Recording When reco rding on the tape in either HDV or DV standar d, audio is r ecord ed on two channels. The audio transfer rate is 384 kbps and the sampling fr equency is 48 kHz. Y ou c an record audio in 16-bit mode ( sampling frequency 48 kH z), or 12- bit mode (s ampling frequency 32 kHz).
54 Recording Audio Select the audio input fr om FRONT (supplied microphone), XLR MIC (XLR terminals) or XLR LI NE (XLR terminals). Y ou can select the audio input independently fo r channel 1 and channel 2. Using the Front Microphone Set the IN PUT SE LECT swi tch to FRON T MIC.
55 Recor ding Adjusting the Audio Recording Level If the audio level is too high and the sound sounds distorted, activate the microphone attenuator (20 dB), by setting the FRONT MIC A TT . switch or the corresponding switch to A TT . Hiding/D isplaying the Audi o Level Indicator Open the menu and select [DISPL A Y SETUP/ ].
56 Y ou can select to s ynchr onize the audio signal with the video signal by adding an equal amount of delay to the audio. Open the menu and select [A UDIO SETUP]. Select [MONITOR SEL.], set it to [LINE OUT] and close the menu. If you wish to monitor audio in real time, select [NORMAL] instead.
57 Recor ding Image Stabilizer (lenses with image st abiliz ation function) Y ou can select to activate the image stabilizer or turn it off depen ding on the reco rding conditions. T o tur n of f the im age stabi lizer usi ng the HD 20x L IS III l ens: Set the ST ABILI ZER ON/ OFF switc h to OFF .
58 Using the Programmed AE Modes Prog rammed auto exposur e modes provide advan ced automated recor ding techniques ensuring professional r esults in va rious shootin g conditio ns. Manual ( 61) This mode offers th e creative fr eedom of a complete range of manual contr ols.
59 Recor ding Easy Recording The camcorder auto matically controls the focus, shutter speed, apertur e, gain, white balance, and AE Shift allowing you to s imply point and film . This mode locks all of these features an d options, making them fixed and unadjustable.

61 Recor ding Recording in Manual Mode Y ou can set the exposure at any combination of shutter speed and apertur e. The apertur e value can be adjusted in 1/16 EV stops; however , the apertur e value displayed on the scr een will change on ly in 1/4 EV stops.
62 Push AE In M Manual mode you c an use the Pu sh AE function when you want the camcorder to r e-establish optimal exposure settin gs by automatically adjusting the aperture and gain (if the GAIN dial is set to A). Press the P USH AE butto n and hol d it pressed down.
63 Recor ding Recording in Shutter -Priority (Tv) Mode Available shutter spee ds when record ing movies : 1/3*, 1/6, 1 /12, 1/25, 1/5 0, 1/120, 1/25 0, 1/500, 1/1 000, 1/2000, 1/4000, 1/80 00, 1/16000.
64 Recording in Aperture-Priority (Av) Mode The apertur e value can be adjusted in 1/16 EV stops; however , the aperture value displayed on the screen will change only in 1/4 EV stops. Available aperture values (w ith th e HD 20x L I S II or HD 20 x L IS III le ns) F1.
65 Recor ding Adjusting the Exposure Exposure Lock 1. Set th e dial to , Tv or Av . 2. Pr ess the EXP . LOCK button . • The exposure indicator appears. Use the exposure indicator as an estimate. • The mark above the indicator indicates the standard exposur e (calculated by the camcor der).
66 Gain The gain contr ol adjusts the level of the video signal generated depend ing on the lighting an d shooting conditions. Select automati c gain contr ol, one of the preset gai n level ranging fr om -3 dB to +18 dB or fine-tune the gain level in 0 .
67 Recor ding White Balance The camcor der uses an electron ic white balance proc ess to calibrate the pictur e for accurate color display under differ ent lighting conditions.
68 Setting a Cu stom White Balanc e 1. Set the POWER dial to a r ecording pr ogram other than . 2. Press t he WHIT E BALANC E dial s o that it pops out . 3. Set the WHITE BALANCE dial to one of the custom pr eset positions, A or B. 4. Point th e camcor der at a whit e object and zoom in u ntil i t fills the whole scr een.
69 Recor ding Zebra Pattern This camcor der has a zebra pattern featur e that shows black and white diagonal str ipes over the ar eas that are over exposed. The zebra patter n is only displayed on the scr een and will not af fect your reco rdings. The zebra pattern will not be displayed while the Peaking function is activated ( 44).
70 Color Correction With the color corr ection function you can set the camcor d er to detect the character istics of a certain color or pattern (color phase, ch ro ma, area and Y level) and correct them automatically when r ecording. Y ou can set the color corr ection for up to two different color s (A and B).
71 Recor ding Activ ating the C olor Co rrectio n 1. Open the menu and select [CAMERA SETUP] and select t h e [COLOR CORR.] sub menu . 2. Select [CO RRECT], sel ect a corr ection mode and close the menu. • Y ou can correct o nly the predefined A ar ea, only the pr edefined B area or bot h .
72 Skin Detail Function With the skin detail function you can set the camcor der to detect the characteristics of a certain color or tone. Detail in the tar geted areas w ill be soft ened in or der to co nceal skin imperfec tions. T argeted ar eas will be identified on the scre en by a zebra pattern alter nating with the normal pictur e.
73 Recor ding Selective Noise Reduction With the selective noise r eduction function you can set the camcor der to detect the characteristics of a certain color or tone and automatic ally reduce noise in the targe ted areas.
74 Clear Scan This fe ature allo ws you to rec ord a computer’ s CRT scr een or other equipment without displaying black band or flicker on the scr een. Y ou can adjust the fr equen cy fr om 50.2 Hz to 200.3 Hz. 1. Set the dial to Tv or M. 2. Repeatedly pr ess the SHUTTER button to set th e shut ter spee d to “CS”.
75 Recor ding Custom Keys Y ou can assign fre quently used functions to the custom ke ys. The custom keys can have differ ent functions assigned to them in each of the oper ating modes. Default sett ings: T o check the curr ent cu stom key sett ings: In a re cord ing mo de: Open the me nu and se lect [DISP LA Y SETUP/ ].
76 Changing the Custom Key s Setting * Defaul t valu e in mo de. Open the menu and select [SYSTEM SETUP/ ]. Select [CUSTOM KEY 1 ] or [CUSTOM KEY 2], s elect t he funct ion you wi sh to as sign to the cust om key a nd clos e the me nu. When you do not wish to use the custom keys, select [(NONE)].
77 Recor ding [TC HOLD] Time C ode Hold Y ou can pre ss the custom key button to fr eeze the display of the time code. The time co de will continue running normally even while the time code display is on hold. Time code hold can only be operated with the custom keys.
78 [CP BKWD KEY] Custom Prese t Backwar d Key Press the C USTOM K EY 2 butt on. Usually , pressing the CUSTOM PRE SET SELECT button will cycle forwards to the f ollowing custom preset file. Pressing the custom key butto n instead w ill cycle backwards to the preceding custom preset file.
79 Recor ding Color Bars/A udio Refere nce Signa l Y ou can generate and re cord colo r bars signals and a 1 kHz audio r efer ence signal. With the customized functions ( 100) you can choose between EBU ([TYPE 1]) and SMP TE color bars ([TYPE 2]) and you can also select the str ength of the audio signal (-12 dB, -18 dB, or -20 dB).

86 Audio Output Selecting the A udio Channel Y ou can select the channel for audio signal output from the CH1/CH2 and the (headphone) terminals. Repeate dly press the AUDI O OUTPUT CH button to change the audio channel.

91 External Connections Connecting to a Computer T o connect the camcord er to a computer you will need a computer equipped with an IEEE1394 (DV ) terminal and video editing software with video captu ring capability installed. Use the o ptional CV - 250F (4 pin-6 pin) DV cable or a commercially avai lable 6 pin-6 pin DV cable.
92 Custom ization Custom Preset Settings Y ou can select preset level for a number of picture- related parameter s (23 parameters when reco rding movies, 17 when reco rding still images) . A list of the parameters is given in the fo llowing table and you can find more detailed descriptions on page 97.
93 Customiza tion Changing Cust om Preset Parameters 1. Open the menu , select [CUSTOM I ZE] and then sel ect the [CUSTOM PRESET] sub menu . The custom preset submenu appears. 2. Select [ EDIT] from th e column on the left . The cursor will m ove to the bottom bar of the custom preset editing screen.
