13 Basic Functions Preparations E Loading/Unloading a Cassette Use only videocassettes ma rked with the logo. 1. Slide the OPEN/EJECT switch and open the cassette comp artment cover . The cassette compartment opens automatically . 2. Load/unload the cassette.
14 Installing the Bac kup Batter y The backup battery (lithium button battery C R1616) allows t he camcorder to re tain date, time ( 18 ) and other camcor der setting s while the power so urce is disco nnected. Connect a power source to th e camcorder when replacing t he backup batt ery to retain the settings.

18 Setting the Time Zone, Da te and Time Set the time zone, date and time wh en you first start using your camco rder , or when y ou have replace d the backup battery . Setting the T ime Zone/Daylight Saving T ime 1. Press the MENU button to open the menu.

Once you have se t time zone, da te and time, yo u do not need to r eset the cloc k each time you trave l to another time zone. Just set the time zone to the one of your desti nation, and the camcorder aut omatically adj usts the clock.
20 Displaying Date and T ime during Recording Y ou can display the date and time in the lower l eft corner of the scr een. 1. Press the MENU button to open the menu. 2. T urn the S ET dial to select [D ISPLA Y SETUP/ ] and press the SET dial. 3. T urn the SET dial to select [D/T DISPLA Y] and press the SET dial.

22 About the LCD and viewfinder scr een: The screens are produced with extremely high-prec ision manufactur ing techniques, with more than 99.99% of the pi xels operati ng to specificat ion. Less than 0.0 1% of the pixels may occasi onally misfire or appe ar as black or green dots.
23 Basic Functions Recording E 5. Press the MENU button to close the menu. When [LCD MIRROR] is set to [ON], some scre en displays appear mirror- reversed. Screen Displays during Recording Tim e C od e Indicates th e recording time in hours, minutes and seco nds.
24 Reviewing and Searching when Recording Record Review In record pause mode, this function a llows you to revie w the last few seconds of your recordin g to check if it has been recor ded proper ly . Press and release the (record review) button. The camcorder r ewinds the tape, pla ys back the last few seconds, and return s to record pause mode .
25 Basic Functions Recording E Zooming The camcorder i s equipped with o ptical zoom and di gital zoom. Optical Zoom Move the zoom lever toward W to zoom out (wid e- angle). Move it toward T to zoom i n (telephot o). Press the zoom lever sligh tly for a slow zoom.
26 Digit al Zoom When the digital zoom i s activated, th e camcorder aut omatically swi tches betwee n optical and digital zoo m. With digital zoo m, image resolu tion becomes l ower the more you zoom in. 1. Press the MENU button to open the menu. 2. T urn the SE T dial to select [CAMERA SET UP] and press the SET dial.
27 Basic Functions Recording E Tips for Making Better Videos Holding the Camcorder For maximum stability , grip the camcor der in your righ t hand and keep your right elbow pressed against yo ur body . If necessary , suppor t the camcorder with your left hand.
28 Playback Playing Back a T a pe 1. Set the camcorder to PLA Y (VCR) mode. Set the POWER switch to PLA Y (VCR). 2. Open the LCD panel. Y ou can also close t he LCD panel with the screen facin g outward. 3. Press the button to rewind the ta pe . 4. Press the / button to begin playback.
29 Basic Functions Playback E Special Play back Modes / (Playback Pause) T o pause playback, pr ess the / butto n during normal pl ayback. (Fast Forward Playback) / (Rewind Playback) Plays back the tape at 1 1.5 time s normal spee d (forward or rev erse).
30 Adjusting the V olume When you use the LCD screen for pla yback, the camcor der plays bac k the sound via built-in s peaker . The speak er does not sou nd when you close the LCD panel. T urn the SET dial up to increase the volum e, and down to lower the volume.

46 Infinity Focus Use this fun ction when you wis h to focus on far away subjects s uch as mounta ins or fireworks. Press the FOCUS button more than 2 seconds af ter step 2 in Ad justing the Focus Manually . “MF ” appears. When you operat e the zoom or turn the SET dial, “ ” disappea rs and the camcorder ch anges to manual focus.
47 Advanced Functions Record ing E Setting the W hite Balance Y ou can use t he preset mo des to repr oduce colors more accurat ely , or set a cu stom white balance to obtai n the optimal s etting. 1. Set the program selector to . 2. For custom white balance: Point the camcorder at a white object and zoom in until it fills the whole screen.
48 Use the auto se tting for no rmal outdoor scene s. When the prog ram selector is se t to EASY , white balanc e is preset to [AUT O]. The camcorder retains the custo m white balanc e setting eve n if you turn it off. When you h ave set the custo m white balance: - Depending on the light source, “ ” may keep fla shing.
49 Advanced Functions Record ing E Setting the Shutter Speed Y ou can adjust t he shutter speed manually to mak e stable shots of fast moving subjects. Select fro m AUTO, 1/50 , 1/120, 1/250, 1/500, 1/1000, 1/2000. 1. Set the program selector to . 2. Set the program AE mode to the (Auto) mode.
50 Auto Slow Shutter In Easy Recordin g mode and when [SHUTTER] is se t to [AUTO] in Au to mode, the camcorder uses shutter spee ds down to 1/25 . This allows you to record brightl y in places with insufficient lighting. How ever , you can se t the camcorde r not to use a sl ow shutter speed.
51 Advanced Functions Record ing E Using the Self-Timer 1. Open the menu and select [CAMERA SE TUP]. Select [SELF TIMER], set it to [ON ] and close the menu . “ ” appe ars. 2. Press the st art/stop button. The camcorder starts re cording after a 10-s econd countdown.
52 Changing the R ecor ding Mode (SP/LP) Y ou can choose between SP (standar d play) and LP (l ong play). LP extends the tape usage by 1.5 times . * MV800i only . T o change to LP mode, open the menu and select [VCR SETUP]. Select [REC MODE], set it to [LP] and close the menu.

60 Displaying the Da ta Code The camcorder ma intains a data code containing r ecording date an d time and other camera data such as sh utter speed an d exposure (f-stop). When y ou play back a tape, you can displa y the data code an d select the da ta code combinati on you wish to di splay .
61 Advanced Functions Playback E Displaying the Dat a Code Press the DA T A CODE button. The data code will not display the next time you tur n on the camcorde r . Six-Second Auto Date Date and time ap pear for 6 seco nds when you begi n playback, or to indicate that date or time zone has ch anged.
62 End Sear c h When you have p layed back a tape, you can u se this fun ction to l ocate the e nd of the la st recorded scen e. In stop mode, press the END SEARCH button. • “E ND SEARCH” appears. • The camcorder rewinds /fast forwards the t ape, plays bac k the last few se conds of the recordin g and stops the tape.

67 Advanced Functions Other Functions E Turning Off the Image S tabilizer The image stabili zer compensat es for camcorde r shake even at full teleph oto. It tries to compensate fo r horizontal move ments; therefore, you may decide to turn it off when you mount the camcor der on a tripod.
68 Editing R ecor ding to a V CR or Digital Video De vice Y ou can copy you r recordings by connecting t he camcorder to a VCR or a digital video device. If y ou connect a dig ital video device , you can copy rec ordings with vi rtually no generation loss in image an d sound qualit y .

73 E Editing Con v er ting Analog Signals into Digital Signals (Analog-Digital Con v er ter) By connecti ng the camcor der to a VCR or 8mm vide o camcorder, you can convert analog video/audi o signals to dig ital signals an d output the digi tal signals via the DV terminal .
