Chapter 1 Introduction 1-1 Introduction Congratulations on your purchase of the Canon LR1 Color Bubble J et Printer . W e appreciate your c hoosing this printer to meet y our printing needs. The Canon LR1 printer offers ex cellent pr int quality and fast pr int speed using both color and black inks.
1-2 Introduction Chapter 1 Important Notes on Safety Choosing a Place for Y our Printer ■ Do not place the printer near volatile liquids, such as alcohol or paint thinner . V olatile liquids coming in contact with the electrical components inside the printer ma y result in fire or electrical shock.
Chapter 1 Introduction 1-3 Introduction Supplying P ower to the Printer ■ To avoid electrical shock, make sure your hands are dry before plugging in the power cord. ■ Make sure you insert the plug all the way into the power outlet. Loose connections can r esult in fire or electr ical shock.
■ Do not use the power cord if it is tied or knotted. Doing so may r esult in fire or electr ical shock. ■ If you notice smoke or any strange odor coming from your printer , immediately turn off the power and unplug the power cord from the power outlet.
Handling the Printer ■ Do not use items such as flammable sprays near the printer . If gas from the spray c ontacts elect rical components inside the printer , fire or electrical shock may result. ■ Do not disassemble or alter the printer in any way .
1-6 Introduction Chapter 1 Maintaining the Printer ■ When cleaning, use a damp cloth. Do not use volatile liquids such as alcohol, benzene, or paint thinner . Such substanc es can cause fire or electr ical shock if they contact electrical components inside the printer .

1-12 Introduction Chapter 1 T urning the P ower Off itching the power OFF Press the printer’s POWER button. Once the BUSY light stops flashing, the pr inter is pow ered off. After turning off the printer , wait at least three seconds befor e tur ning it back on again.

Chapter 2 Using BJ Cartridges 2-1 Using BJ Cartridges Y ou can use the following BJ cart ridges w ith the LR1: The BJ cart ridge contains the print head (where the ink comes out) and the ink tanks. When the ink runs out, replace only the ink tank. Follo w these guidelines when using a BJ car tr idge.
2-2 Using BJ Cartridges Chapter 2 If Printing Is Unclear or Colors Are Missing If your printing is unclear or colors ar e missing, one of the following may be the reason: ■ The BJ cart ridge print head nozzles are clogged. ■ An ink tank is empty .
Chapter 2 Using BJ Cartridges 2-3 A normal No zzle Check Pattern looks lik e this: If the print head nozzles are clogged, some hor izontal lines will hav e a broken appearance. If this happens, clean the pr int head. If the ink tank is empt y , some colors will not print.
Cleaning the Print Head The LR1 is equipped with two print head cleaning functions: nor mal print head cleaning and a more po werful deep pr int head cleaning. Only ex ecute deep print head cleaning when the pr int qualit y does not improv e after ex ecuting normal pr int head cleaning.
Deep Print Head Cleaning Make sure the printer is turned on. The green POWER light is on. Press and hold the RESUME/CLEAN button until you hear two beeps, wait for one more beep, then release the button. It tak es approximat ely 3 seconds for the third beep to sound aft er the first two beeps.
2-6 Using BJ Cartridges Chapter 2 Replacing Ink T anks If the LOW INK lig hts come on, replace the corresponding ink tank. Ink T ype and Ink Replacement The LOW INK lights on the front of the pr inter prompt y ou to replace an ink tank when the ink runs low .
Y ou can install an y combination of BCI-11 and high-capacit y BCI-18 ink tanks in a BC-11e Color BJ Car tr idge. Howev er , you cannot install both a BCI-11 Black and a BCI-18 Black Ink T ank in the car tridge. Fo r safety reasons, always store ink tanks out of reach of children.
Replacing an Ink T ank Mak e sure the LR1 is turned on. Do not turn off or unplug the printer while replacing an ink tank. Doing so may cause damage t o the BJ car tr idge. Press the access cover release button and open the BJ cartridge access cover .

For the BC-1 0 Black BJ Cartridge For the BC-12e Photo BJ Cartridge Install the new ink tank. Align the arrows ( e and f ) and set the new ink tank so that it rests at an angle, then gently press do w n until the ink tank locks into place.

For the BC-12e Photo BJ Cartridge Press the ink light reset button. If you do not press the ink light reset butt on, the LOW INK light function will not work c orrectly . If you re place both ink tanks, press both the BLACK and COLOR buttons, one at a time, until you hear two beeps.
Close the BJ cartridge access cover . Print head cleaning starts and the BUSY light flashes. When the printer beeps and the BUSY light goes out, you ar e ready to print.
Remove the BJ cartridge. R elease and raise the g reen tab with your finger . Place the BJ cartridge you just removed in the Ink Cartridge Storage Box.
Prepare the replacement BJ cartridge. If using a new BJ car tridge, open the packaging and remov e the protectiv e or ange cap and orange tape. ■ Do not replac e the protecti ve orange cap once it has been remo ved. Y ou may damage the print head. ■ Mak e sure you r emov e the protectiv e or ange tape.
Press the ink light reset buttons only after installing a new BJ cartridge. Pr ess each button, one at a time. Do not press these butto ns when installing a BJ cart ridge that has been used before. The printer will not be able to detect when the ink runs out.

Paper Handling Chapter 3 P aper Handling 3-1 This chapter describes the ty pe of paper you can use with the Canon LR1, and how y ou load the paper . Y ou can stack paper in the paper supply t ray to load it aut omatically or you can man ually feed one sheet at a time.

Chapter 3 P aper Handling 3-3 Paper Handling Loading P aper The LR1 pro vides two methods of feeding paper : from the paper supply tray and from the manual feed slot. Load letter size paper in the paper supply tray . Y ou can also load one sheet at a time in the manual feed slot.
Set the paper guide and size guide. Y ou will nor mally set up the paper supply tray for letter size paper . Settings are also available for A4 size paper . Load the paper and make sure the corners are under the clips. Set the paper in the tray with the print side down.
Chapter 3 P aper Handling 3-5 Paper Handling Press PUSH on the front of the printer , and pull out the paper output tray extension. Printed documents ar e stacked in the paper output tray . If possible, remo ve each sheet as it is printed to a void getting ink on the back of the next sheet.
3-6 P aper Handling Chapter 3 Align the paper guide with the left edge of the paper . Press PUSH on the front of the printer , and pull out the paper output tray extension. Using High Resolution P aper After printing High R esolution Paper , fine powder fr om the paper accumulat es inside the printer and paper may not feed pr operly .
Pull out the paper supply tray . Remove the peel-off tabs from the cut-outs on the cleaning sheet. Place the side with the exposed sticky cut-outs facing up, and insert the paper so the cut-outs enter the printer first. Push the paper supply tray back into the printer .
Clearing P aper Jams If a paper jams occurs, check the following and gently pull the jammed paper out in the direction indicated b y the ar ro ws. If the RESUME/CLEAN light comes on: ■ P aper is not loaded, or paper has not ejected complet ely . All lights come on.
Maintaining the Printer Chapter 4 Maintaining the Printer 4-1 This section describes printer maintenance and cautions for transpor ting the printer . Printer Maintenance W hen maintaining the pr inter , alwa ys follow these pr ecautions: ■ W hen car ing for your printer , turn the power off, and unplug the power c ord fr om the electrical outlet.
Cleaning the Printer Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet. Wipe any dirt from the outside of the printer (such as around the paper output tray) with a soft cloth that has been moistened with water , then firmly wrung out.
T ransporting the Printer W hen t ranspor ting the printer , pack it in its or iginal box and affix all pr otective mat erials. Do not remo ve the po wer cord fr om the electr ical outlet while the POWER lig ht is on or flashing. Damage to the printer ma y result.
W hen using a shipping company t o t ranspor t your printer , mak e sure y ou do the following: ■ Secure the lid of the box with tape. ■ W rite “Precision M achinery — Handle W ith Care ” in a prominent location on the outside of the box. W hen t ranspor ting the printer by automobile, be careful not to vibrate or bump the printer .
T roubleshooting Chapter 5 Troubleshooting 5-1 This chapter describes re medies for various pr inter problems. P ower P ower does not go on Is the power cord properly Mak e sure the power c ord is securely plugged int o plugged into the printer the electrical outlet.

Glossary Glossary G-1 Automatic feed R efers to one wa y in which paper can be fed into the printer when the paper supply tray is used. BJ cartridge The printing mechanism that contains the print head unit and ink tanks. Bubble Jet printing An ink jet ty pe of pr inting that heats the ink to a boiling point in a nozzle to form a bubble.
P arallel interface An interfac e that t ransmits multiple bits simultaneously (usually in one-byte segments).
