25 Preparations Changing Settings with the MENU Button Many of the camcor der’ s functions can be changed fr om the on-screen menu. Selecting Menus and Settings 1. Pr ess the MENU button to open the menu. 2. T urn the SELECT/SET dial to select a submenu and pr ess the dial.
26 Language and Date/T ime Settings Changing the Display Language The default langua ge for displays and menu items is Engli sh. The language can be changed to German, Spanish, Fren ch, Italian, Polish, Ru ssian, simplified Chinese or Japanese. T o change the display language, open the me nu and select [DISPLA Y SETUP/ ].
27 Preparations Displaying the Date and Time while Recording Y ou can display the date and time in the lower left cor ner of the scr een. Open the menu and select [DISPLA Y SETUP/ ]. Select [GUIDE INFO], set it to [D/T DISPLA Y] and close the menu. Changing the Date Format Y ou can select between three date formats: [JAN .
28 Recording Recording The default recor ding standard is HDV . About the au dio recording, r e fer to the rele vant chapter ( 47). Recording 1. Remove the lens cap. 2. Move the / (card/tape) switc h to . 3. Press the lock button and set the dial to a recor ding program.
29 Recording Low-angle Recording The carrying handle is equipped with a du plicate set of recor ding and zoom contr ols, ideal for low-angle recor ding. Slide the LOCK switch in the direction of the arrow to prevent the a ccidental operation of these contr ols.
30 Screen Displays while Recor ding Tim e co de Indicates the recording time in hours, minutes, seconds and frames. Remaining tape Indicate s the remaining time on the ta pe in minutes. “ END” will appear when the tape reaches the end. • When the time left is less than 15 seconds, the remaining ta pe time may not appear .
31 Recording Selecting the On-Screen Displa ys Y ou can select the amount of information shown on the screen fr om full, partial or no display . Repeatedly pressing the DISP . button will cycle through the options in the following sequenc e. 1 This level cannot be selected if [SYSTEM SE TUP/ ] [ALL DISPLA Y] is set to [DISABLE].
32 Selecting the Signal Standard and Aspect Ratio Y ou can select the signal sta ndard of your r ecordin g (high d efinition or standar d definition) and, for standar d definition recor d ings, also the aspect ratio of the r ecording.
33 Recording Locating the End of the Last Scene Y ou can use this function to locate the end of the last recor ded scene. Press the END SEARCH button. • appears. • The camcorder rewinds/fast forwar ds the tape, plays back the last few seconds of the recor ding and stops the tape.
34 Zooming Y ou can operate the zoom using the zoom lever on the side grip or the one on the carrying handle. Y ou can also use the zoom ring on the lens or the zoom buttons on the wir eless controller .
35 Recording Zoom buttons on the carrying handle: The zoom sp eed is constant and can be set to one of 16 zoom speed levels. Set the ZOOM SPEED switch to C (constant) and change the zoom speed level as described previously . Zoom buttons on the supplied wir eless contr oller: The zoom speed is constant and cannot be adjusted.
36 Adjusting the Focus The camcord er can be set to Autofocus or Manual Focus. Autofocus The autofocus can be set to Normal AF or Instant AF *. The camcor der has also a Push AF function to allow for a temporary autofocus while focusi ng manually .
37 Recording When recor ding under bright conditions, the cam cor der closes down the apertur e. When the aperture value used is too la rge, the pictur e may a ppear blurr ed. T urn the bu ilt-in ND filter on/off according to the scr een display ( 41).
38 Using the Focus Assist Functio ns (Peaking and Magnifying) In order to make m anual focusing easier , you can use two assist functions: Peaking emphasizes the outlines of the subject cr eating a clearer contrast, and Magnifying enlar ges the image on the screen.
39 Recording Focus Preset This function enables a focus position to be memorized. Later , you can return to the preset focus position instantly . Y ou can also select the speed at which the camcorder returns to the preset focus position. Presetting the Focus 1.
40 Focus Limit and Macro Shooting Usually the camcor der’ s focus range allows macro shoo ting. Y ou can activate the focus limit to restrict the focus range. The focus range 2 cm - (at full wide-angle) is limited to 1 m - (throughout the entire zoom ran ge).
41 Recording Using the ND Filter When recor ding under bright conditions, the camcorde r closes down the apertur e. When the aperture valu e used is too larg e, the picture may appear blurred. T urn the built-in ND filter o n/of f accord ing to the screen display .
42 Selecting the Frame Rate Y ou can set the frame rate to 50i or 25F , regar dless of the recording mode. 50i Mode Records 50 interlaced fields per second, th e sam e as standard-definition TV sign als. 25F Mode Records 25 frames per second accor ding to HDV native 1080/25p specifications.
43 Recording Setting the T ime Code Y ou can select the running mode of the camcorder’ s time code. Y ou can enter the initial value for the [FREE-RUN] and the [REC-RUN PS.] settings. [REC-RUN]: The time code runs only when recor ding. [REC-RUN PS.]: The time code runs only when recordin g, starting from a pr eset value.
44 Synchronizing the Camcorder ’ s T ime Code Y ou can synchronize this camcor der’ s time code to an exter nal time code generator . Y ou can also include in the r ecording the user bit signal r eceived from the TIME CODE ter minal ( 46). The camcorde r offers the following sync hronization option s.
45 Recording While a time code signal is be ing received, the [COUNT -UP] setting of the camcorder will be ignored and the external time code’ s drop-frame bit will be used instead. The Genlock synchronization st abilizes after approx . 10 seconds.
46 Setting the User Bit The user bit display can be selected from the date or the time of re cording, or an iden tification code consisting of 8 characters in the hexadecimal system that is usefu l for labeling tapes. Ther e are sixteen possible characters: the numbers 0 to 9 and the letters A to F .
47 Recording Audio Recording When recor ding on the tape in either HDV or DV standar d, audio is re corded on two channels. The audio transfer rate is 384 kbps and the sampling fr equency is 48 kHz. Y ou can recor d audio in 16-bit mode (samplin g fr equency 48 kHz), or 12-bit mode (sampling frequency 32 kHz).
48 Recording Audio Select the audio input fr om the built-in microphone or external micr ophone (MIC terminal), XLR MIC (XLR terminals) or XLR LINE (XLR terminals). Y ou can select the audio input independently for channel 1 and channel 2. Selecting the Audio Channel Open the menu and select [AUDIO SETUP].
49 Recording Using the XLR terminals 1. Connect a micr ophone to one of the XL R terminals. T o supply a microphone with phantom p ower , set the corresponding switch to ON. Make sure to connect the m icrophone first, be fore turning the phantom power on.
50 Hiding/Displaying the Audio Level Indicator Open the menu a nd select [DISPLA Y SETUP/ ]. Select [AUDIO LE VEL], select a setting option and clo se the menu. The audio level indicator can also be turned on/off with a custom key ( 71). Automat ic Audio Adj ustment Set the corr esponding switch to A.
51 Recording Y ou can activate the audio peak limiter to prev ent audio distortions. Wh en activated, the audio peak limiter will limit the amplitude of audio inpu t signals when th ey exceed -4 dBFS. The audio peak limiter can be activated if at least one of the channels is set to manual audio adjustment.
52 Image Stabilizer Y ou can select to activate the image stabilizer or turn it off depending on the r ecording conditions. Open the menu and s elect [CAMERA SETUP]. Sele ct [IMG ST AB], select a s etting option and close the menu. The image stabilizer cannot be turned off in the Easy Recording mode.
53 Recording Using the Programmed AE Modes Programmed au to exposure modes pr ovide advan ced automated r ecording techniques en suring professional r esults in va rious shooting conditions. Manual ( 56) This mode offers the cr eative freedom of a complete range of manu al controls.
54 Easy Recording The camcorder automatica lly controls th e focus, shutter speed, apertur e, gain, white balance, a nd AE Shift allowing you to simply point and film. This mode locks all of these features and options, making them fixed and unadjustable.

56 Recording in Manual Mode Y ou can set the exposure at any combination of shu tter speed and apertur e. The aperture value can be adjusted in 1 /8 EV stops; however , the aperture value displayed on the scr een will change only in 1/4 EV stops. Av ailable settings * Can only be selected if the custom function [IRIS LIMIT] is set to [OFF].
57 Recording Push AE In M Manual mode you can use the Push AE function when you want the camcor der to r e-establish optimal exposure settings by au tomatically adjusting the aperture and gain (if the AGC switch is set to ON). Press the PUSH AE button and hold it pr essed down.
58 Recording in Shutter -Priority (Tv) Mode Av ailable shutter speeds when recording movies: 1/3, 1/6, 1/12, 1/25, 1 /50, 1/120, 1/250, 1/500, 1/100 0, 1/ 2000, 1 /4000, 1/8000 , 1/16000, CS (clear sca n) Av ailable shutter speeds when recording still images: 1/3, 1/6, 1/12, 1/25, 1/ 50, 1/120, 1/250, 1/500 1.
59 Recording Recording in Aperture-Priority (Av) Mode The aperture value can be adjusted in 1/8 EV stop s; however , the aperture value displayed on the scree n will change only in 1/4 EV st ops. Av ailable aperture values F1.6, F1.8, F2.0, F2.2, F2.4, F2.
60 Adjusting the Exposure Exposure Lock 1. Set the dial to , Tv or Av . 2. Pr ess the EXP . LOCK button. • The exposure indicat or a ppears. Use the exposur e indicator as an estimate. • The mark above the indicator indicates the standard exposur e (calculated by the camcor der).
61 Recording Gain The gain control adjusts the level of the video sign al generated depending on the lightin g and shooting conditions. Y ou can select from automatic gain control or one of 3 preset gain le vel s (L: lo w , M: m iddle , H: high) to which you can independently assign gain values fr om -3 dB to +36 dB ( ) or + 18 dB ( ).
62 Gain Fine T uning 1. Set the dial to M , , Tv or Av . 2. Open the men u and select [CAMERA SETUP]. Select the [GAIN SETTING] submenu and then one of the GAIN switch options. 3. Select [TUNE 0.0d B] and press the SELECT/SET dial. 4. T urn the SELECT/SET dial to select the desire d gain level and press the dial.
63 Recording White Balance The camcord er uses an electron ic white balance pr ocess to calibrate the pictur e for accurate color display under differ ent lighting conditions.
64 Setting the Color T emperature 1. Set the dial to a recor ding program other than . 2. Set the AW B switch to OFF and the WHITE BAL. switch to PRE. 3. Set the WHITE BAL. PRESET switch to . The color temperature currently set will be displayed. 4. Pr ess the WHITE BAL.
65 Recording Zebra Pattern This camcord er has a zebra pattern featur e that shows black and white diagonal stripes ove r the areas that are overexposed. The ze bra patter n is only display ed on the screen and will not affect your recor dings. The zebra pattern will not be displaye d while the Peaking function is activated ( 38).
66 Color Correction With the color corr ection function you can set the camcor der to detect the characteristi cs of a certain color or pattern (color phase, chroma, ar ea and Y leve l) and correct them automatically when recor ding. Y ou can set the color corr ection for up to two differ ent colors (A and B).
67 Recording Activating the Color Corr ection 1. Open the menu and select [CAMERA SETUP] and select th e [COLOR CORR.] submenu. 2. Selec t [CORRECT], s elect a correction mo de and clos e the menu. • Y ou can corr ect only the pre defined A area, only the pr edefined B area or both.
68 Skin Detail Function With the skin detail function you can set the camc order to detect the characteristics of a certain color or tone. Detail in the tar geted areas will be softened in or der to conceal skin imperfections. T arg eted areas will be identified on the screen by a zebra pattern alternating with the normal picture.
69 Recording Selective Noise Reduction With the selective noise r eduction function you can set the camcorder to detect the characteristics of a certain co lor or tone an d automaticall y reduce noise in the targeted ar eas.
70 Clear Scan This feature allows you to recor d a computer’ s CRT scr een or other equipment without displaying black band or flicker on the scre en. Y ou can adjust the frequency from 50.2 Hz to 200.3 Hz. 1. Set the dial to M or Tv . 2. T urn the SHUTTER dial to set the shutter speed to “CS”.
71 Recording Custom Keys Y ou can assign frequently used func tions to the custom keys. The custom keys can have differ ent functions assigned to them in each of the operating modes. Default settings: T o check the current cus tom key settings: In a recording mode: Open the menu a nd select [DISPLA Y SETUP/ ].
72 Changing the Cust om Keys Setting * Default value in mode. Open the menu and select [SYSTEM SETUP/ ]. Select [CUSTOM KEY 1] or [CUSTOM KEY 2], select the function you wish to assign to the custom key and close the menu. When you do not wish to use the custom keys, select [(NONE)].
73 Recording [DA T A CODE] Data Code ( 108) Press the CUSTOM KEY (1 or 2) button. The data code appears. Press the bu t ton again to hide the data code. [TC HOLD] Time Code Hold Y ou can press the custom key button to fr eeze the disp lay of the time code.
74 [CP BKWD KEY] Custom Preset Backwar d Key Press the CUSTOM KEY 2 button. Usually , pressing the CUSTOM PRESET SELECT button will cycle forwards to the following custom preset file. Pressing the custom key butt on instead will cycle backwards to the pr eceding custom preset file.
75 Recording Color Bars/Audio Reference Signal Y ou can generate and r ecor d color bars signals a nd a 1 kHz audio refer ence signal. With the customized functions ( 95) you can choo se between EBU ([TYPE 1] ) and SMPTE color bars ([TYPE 2]) an d you can also select the strength of the audio signal (-12 dB, -18 dB, or -20 dB).
76 Extern al Connections V ideo Signal Output Standards The standard of th e video signal output from the HD/SD S DI ( only), HD/SD COMPONENT OUT and HDV/DV terminals depends on the standar d used for r ecording (or the standar d of the r ecording on the tape being played back) and on various menu settings.
77 External Connections Connecting to a Monitor/TV The different recording modes and the correspondin g output terminals are given in the table below: 1 only .

81 External Connections Audio Output Selecting the Audio Channel Y ou can select the channel for audio signal output from the A/V1 terminal. * Default value in mode. Open the menu and select [AUDIO SETUP]. Select [OUTPUT CH], sele ct a setting option and close the menu.

83 External Connections Digital V ideo Control This feature enables the camcorder to contr ol the recor d and stop functions of an external digital device connected to the ca mcorder thr ough the HDV/DV te rminal. The device must comply with the IEEE1394 A V/C protocol.
84 Recording an External V ideo Signal (HDV/DV In, Analog Line-In) Y ou can recor d on the tape an external video signal , either fr om the HDV/DV input (SD or HD standard) or from the analog vide o input (SD standard).
85 External Connections Concerning Copyright Copyright Precaution Certain pre-r ecorded video tapes, films and other ma terials, as well as some television programs ar e copyrighted. Unauthorized recor ding of these materials may violate copyright pr otection laws.
86 Connecting to a Computer T o connect the camcorder to a co mputer you will need a computer equipped with an IEEE1394 (DV) terminal and video editing softwar e with video capturing capability installed. Use the opti onal CV -250F (4 pin-6 pin) DV cable or a commer cially availa ble 6 pin-6 pin DV cable .
87 Customization Customizat ion Custom Preset Settings Y ou can select preset level for a number of pi cture-r elated parameters (23 parameters when r ecord ing movies, 17 when recor ding still images). A list of th e parameters is given in the following table and you can find more detailed descriptions on page 92.
88 Changing Custom Preset Parameters 1. Open the menu, selec t [CUSTOMIZE] and then select the [CUSTOM PRESET] submenu. The custom preset submenu appears. 2. Select [ EDIT] fr om the column on the left. The cursor will move to the bottom bar of the custom pr eset editing screen.
89 Customization Renaming a Custom Preset File Follow steps 1-3 in Changing Custom Preset Parameters ( 88) to select the custom preset file you want to rename. 1. From the bottom bar , select [ RENAME] . The first character of the custom pr eset file name will start flashing.
90 Copying a Custom Preset File to the Memory Card 1. Open the menu, selec t [CUSTOMIZE] and then select the [CUSTOM PRESET] submenu. 2. Select [ CAMERA CARD] from the column on t he left. 3. From t he bottom bar , select [ SELECT CP] and then select the name of the custom preset file you want to co py to the card.
91 Customization Reading a Custom Preset File fr om a Still Image With the custom function [PHOTO BUTTON] ( 95) yo u can select to save the custom pr eset settings curren tly in use along with a still image recorded in mode (simultaneous r ecording, 113).
92 [GAM] Gamma Curve The gamma curve changes the overall look of the image. Y ou can select from [NORMAL] , [CINE1] or [CIN E2]. [NORMAL]: standar d gamma setting suitable for video. [CINE1]: appropriate for video telecined from film. [CINE2]: appropriate for tra nsfer to film.
93 Customization [SHP] Sharpness Adjust the sharpness level in th e range -9 to +9. No ise artifacts caused by too-high sharpness se ttings can be reduced using the coring setting. [HDF] Horizo ntal Detail Fr equency Select the horizontal definition of the image fr om [HIGH], [MIDDLE] or [LOW].
94 [RGN] R Gain Adjust the intensity of r ed tones in the range -50 to +50. [GGN] G Gain Adjust the intensity of gr een tones in the range -50 to +50. [BGN] B Gain Adjust the intensity of blue tones in the range -50 to +50 .
95 Customization Customized Functions Y ou can customize to your personal prefere nces ma ny aspects of the operation of the camcorder , most of them governing how the camcorder operates in mode. Y ou can adjust up to 3 differ ent custom function file s and save them on the camcor de r or to a memory card.
96 Resetting a Custom Function File 1. Open the menu, selec t [CUSTOMIZE] and then select the [CUSTOM FUNCTION] submenu. 2.
