Preparations 19 Preparations This chapter desc ribes basic o perations, such as using the touch panel, navigati ng the menus, and firs t time settings to help you learn more about your camcorder . Getting Started Charging the Battery P ack The camcorder can be power ed with a battery pack or directly using the compact power adapter .
20 Preparations 5 Charging will start when the camcorder is turned off. • If the camcorder was on, the green ON/OFF (CHG) indicator will go out when you turn off the camcorder . After a moment, the ON/OFF (CHG) indicator will star t flashi ng in red (battery pack charging).
Preparations 21 • T o prevent equipment breakdowns an d excessive heating, do not con- nect the supplied compact power adapter to voltage converters for overseas travels or special power so ur ces such as those on aircraft and ships, DC-AC inverters, etc.
22 Preparations Preparing the Accessories Wireless Controll er First, insert the supplied CR2025 lithium button battery into the wire- less contr oller . 1 Press the tab in the direction of the arrow and pull out the battery holder . 2 Place the lithium bu tton battery with the + side facing up.
Preparations 23 Grip Belt and Straps Fasten the grip belt. Adjust the grip belt so that you can reach the zoom lever with your index finger , and the g butt on with your thumb. To remove the gr ip belt 1 Lift the padded handgrip's flap and detach the strap fr om the V elcro pad.
24 Preparations To attach an optional wrist strap Pass the attaching end of the wrist strap through the r ear b racket on the camcorder , thread the wrist strap through the loop and fasten. Y ou can also attach the wrist strap to the strap mount on the grip belt to use both for extra convenience a nd protectio n.
Preparations 25 NOTES • About the LCD scree n: The screen is produced using extremely high-pre- cision manufacturing tech niques, with more than 99.99% of the pixels operating to specification. Less than 0.01% of the pixels may occasion- ally misfire or appear as black, red, blue or gr een dots.
26 Preparations Basic Operation of the Camcorder Using the T ouch Screen The control buttons and me nu items that appea r on the touch screen change dynamically depe nding on the operating mode and the task you are performing. With the intuitive touch sc ree n interface you have all the contr ols at your fingertips .

Operating Modes Recording When recording video or photos, the c amcorder’ s ope rating mode is determined by the position of the mode switch and the onscr een con- trol buttons.
28 Preparations NOTES • b When switching to a playback mode, the memory s elected for playback will be the same currently used for recor ding. • Y ou can also press and hold B on the wireless controller for mor e than 2 seconds to switch between recording and playback mode.

30 Preparations NOTES • A small font size is used in menu screens so you can see the options currently selected. Y ou can enla rge the font size by setting 6 8 [Font Size] to [ A Large] but only the icons of the currently selected options will appear on the screen.
Preparations 31 First Time Settings Setting the Date and Time Y ou will need to set the date and time of the camcor der before you can start using it. The [Date/ Time] scr een will appear automati cally when the cam - corder’ s clock is not set.

Preparations 33 Using a Memory Card Memor y Cards Compatible for Use with the Camcorder Y ou can use comm ercially available Secure Dig ital (SD) cards with this camcord er . However , depending on the memory car d, you may not be able to recor d movies.
34 Preparations SDXC Memory Cards As of May 2010, SDXC me mory cards have been tested to work under Windows 7. For details on whether your com puter's operating system is SDXC-compatible, che ck with your computer's manufactur er .
Preparations 35 Inserting and Removing a Memor y Card Make sure to initialize ( 0 37) all memory cards befo re using them with this camcorder . 1 T ur n off the camcorder . Make sure the ON/OFF (CHG) indicator is off. 2 Open the memory card slot cover .

Dual Shot Mode 39 Dual Shot Mode This chapter cov ers how to easily r ecord video and pho tos in the all-automatic Dual Sh ot mode, and how to use basic shoot- ing functions like zoo m and Quick Start. 42 Dual Shot Mode • Be sure to save your recor dings regularly ( 0 121), especially after making important r ecordings. Cano n shall not be liable for any loss or corruption of dat a. • When recording photos on an Eye- Fi car d, photos will be uploaded automatically if you are within the ra nge of a configured network.
Dual Shot Mode 43 Zooming There ar e three ways you can zoom i n and out: using the zoom lever o n the camcorder , using the zoom buttons on the wirele ss contr oller or using the zoom contr ols on the touch screen. In addition to the 15x optical zoom *, in mode, you can turn on the 300x digital zoom with the 7 8 [Digital Zo om] setting.
44 Dual Shot Mode 2 T ouch the zoom controls to operate the zoom. T ouch anywher e within the Q area to zoom out or anywhere with in the P area to zoom in. T ouch closer to the center for a slow zoom ([Speed 1]); touch closer to the e / d icons for faster zooms ([Speed 3]).
Dual Shot Mode 45 2 When you wish to resume recording, open the LCD panel. The ON/OFF (CHG) indicator tur ns b ack green and the camcorder is ready to recor d. IMPORT ANT • Do not disconnect the power source during standb y mode (while the ON/OFF (CHG) in dicator is lit in orange).

Video 51 3D Flip View 3D Flip V iew is a fun way to displa y your video recor dings (original scenes) in a 3 D layout, organized by recording date. In any index screen, touch [ b ] 8 [3D Flip View]. During single photo view , touch the sc reen once to display the controls then touch [ Q ] to open the [Photos] index scr een.
52 Video Narrowing Down the Scenes Shown in the Index Scr een From the [O riginal] index scr een, you can narrow down the scenes shown, leaving only scene s that were r ecorded on a specific date or only those sc enes in which peo ple's faces were detect ed.
Video 53 2 Open the calendar screen. • Dates that contain scenes (that i s, movies were recorded on that date) appear in black ag ainst a silver background . Dates without record ings appear grayed out. •T o u c h [ y ] or [ A ] to ju mp to the previous/nex t calendar month t hat contains recor dings.

Video 55 Advanced Functions Shooting Video in y Manual Mode When the mode switch is set to y (Manual mode), you can enjoy full access to the menus and ma nually adjust the expos ure, focus , white balance and many mor e of the camcorder ' s settings to your pr efer- ence.
56 Video NOTES • The zoom, Quick Start function, po wer saving modes, etc. operate the same way in mode as in mode. For details, refer to Dual Shot Mode ( 0 39). Selecting the Video Quality (Recording Mode) The camcor der offers 5 reco rding modes.

60 Video - p will appear on the screen when the camcorder's temperature becomes too high. If this happens, tu rn off the camcorder , take it out of the waterproof case and keep it in a cool place until the temperature goes down. If the camcorder becomes too hot, it will turn off au tomatically .
Video 61 To change the fram e rate Advanced Image Stabilization The image stabilize r reduce s camcor der blur (blu r due to the cam- corder moving) so you can get nice, sta ble shots. Sel ect the image s ta- bilization mode accor ding to the shooting conditions.
62 Video NOTES • If the degree of camcorder shake is too high, the image stabilizer may not be able to fully compensate. • Powered IS is not available in mode. • For surveying and following shots, when you pan the camcorder from side to side or tilt it up and down, we recommend setting the IS mode to [ P Dynamic] or [ Q Standard].
Video 63 1 Activate the pre-recor ding function. • d appears. • Repeat , selecting [ B Of f], to tur n off pre-recor ding. 2P r e s s g . The scene recorded in the memory will start 3 seconds before g was pressed. NOTES • While pre-recor ding is activa ted, th e camcorder will not emit any notifi- cation sounds.
64 Video By default, face det ectio n is activated. If the func tion was tur ned off, per- form the following procedure to turn it on. T o select the main subject If there is mor e than one person in the picture, the cam corder will auto- matically select one per son it determines is the main subject.
Video 65 T ouch & T rack When recor ding people, face detection ( 0 63) will track the main sub- ject and keep it always in fo cus. But also when recor ding other movi ng subjects such as your pet, a moving vehicle or pe ople not facing the camera dir ectly , you can use T ouch & T rack to keep your subject in focus at all times.
66 Video 1 Press z . • A blue border appears on the scr een. • Press z again to return to n or m al v id e o rec o rdi n g m o d e. 2 Press g . • By default, the camcorder record s for about 4 seconds (the blue frame serves as a visual progress bar) and then automatically returns to record pause mode.

68 Video Options ( Default value) NOTES •[ B Shutter -Pri. AE]: - On screen only the denominator is displayed – [ B 250] indicates a shutter speed of 1/250 second, etc.
Video 69 Shutter Speed and Aperture V alue Guidelines With slower shutter speed you can add a nice motion blur and sense of movement. With faster shutter speeds you can “freeze the action” for powerful images of moving subjects. With small aperture val ues only the subject is i n focus and the background is softly blurred.
70 Video Manual Exposure Adjustment At times, backlit subjects may appe ar too dark (underexposed) or sub- jects under ve ry strong lights may appea r too bright or glar ing (overex- posed).
Video 71 NOTES • If the recor ding program is changed during exposure lock, the cam- corder will r e turn to automatic exposure. • When shooting subjects with a st rong light source behind them, the camcorder automatically corrects for the backlight.
72 Video POINTS TO CHECK • Adjust the zoom before you start the procedure. 1 Open the manual focus screen. 2 T ouch a subject that appears inside the X frame. • The T ouch AF mark ( P ) will flash and the focu sing distance will be adjusted automatically .
Video 73 White Balance The white balance func tion helps you to accurately r eproduc e colors under dif ferent lighting condi tions so that white objects will always look truly white in your r ecordings. POINTS TO CHECK • Select a recording program other th an the Special Scene recording pro- grams.
74 Video NOTES • When you select the custom white balance: -S e t 7 8 [Digital Zoom] to [ B Off]. - Reset the white balance when you ch ange locations or the lighting or other conditions change. - Depending on the light source, g may keep flashing.

82 Video Using the SM-V1 Surround Microphone or DM- 100 Directional Stereo Microphone Using the SM-V1 you can add a sense of depth and presence to your recor dings with 5.1ch surround sound. Using the DM-100 you can accurately r ecord audio coming dir ectly from the dir ection you are rec ord in g.
Video 83 Using a Zoom Remote Controller By attaching the optional RA- V1 Re mote Control Adap ter to the mini advanced shoe, you can use the op tional ZR-2000 or ZR-1000 Zoom Remote Controller . Doing so will allow you to use certain functions while viewing the picture on an exte rnal monitor with out touching the camcord er .
84 Video Selecting the Playback Starting Point If you have a very long scene, you may wa nt to start playing ba ck the scene fr om a certain point. Y ou can use the movie timeline to br eak the scene to segments at fixed time in tervals ra nging from 6 seconds to 6 minutes.
Video 85 To change the inter val between frames T o display cha nges in the scene’ s main subject • The timeline ruler will show fram es taken from the scene eve ry time the main subject d etected by the camcorder changed.
86 Video Playing Back Scenes Set to Background Music Y ou can play back video snapshot scene s, scenes in the playlist and photo slideshows set to bac kground music (instead of the origin al sound) using one of the s upplied music tracks.
Video 87 3 Back in the index screen, touch a scene to start the playback set to the selected music track. In mode, touch a photo to go to single photo view and continue with the slidesho w proced ure ( 0 108). To delete a mus ic track In the music track selection sc reen, touch [ Z ] o r [ O ] to select the track you want to delete.
88 Video NOTES • Y ou can also add to th e playlist just the vide o snaps hot scenes you want to watch and arrange their playback order . • Initializing a memory card will permanently erase any music files you may have transferred from the supp lied Camcor der Supplemental Disc to the card.

90 Video Playlist and Scene Operations Editing the Playlist: Adding, Deleting, Moving and Playing Back Create a playlist to play back only the scenes yo u prefer and in the order of y our choice. Y ou can play back the scenes in the pla ylist using one of the supplied music tr acks as background music ( 0 86).
Video 91 • b Y ou can copy scenes from the built-in memory to the memory card ( 0 121) to include in the memory ca rd’ s playlist also scenes that were originally recor ded in the built-in memory . Deleting Scene s from the Playlist Deleting scenes from the playlist will not affect your origi nal record ings.
92 Video Capturing Photos and Video Snapshot Scenes fro m a Movie Y ou can captur e video snapshot scenes, single photo s or a series of continuous photos fr om a previo usly recorded scene.

94 Video To capture the photos 1 Play back the scene fr om which you want to capture the photo. 2 Pause the playback at the point you want to capture. 3 Press j fully . T o capture a photo sequence, hold j pressed down. The scene will be played back by frames an d each frame captured as a separate photo.
